We eat here whenever we visit my wife's family, and every time it seems to be worse than the previous experience. On a weekday in July, we waited over two hours to receive our order. This was due to only having one person wait for the entire restaurant. There were dirty tables everywhere because they were not getting bussed. The pizza itself was ok. It seems like this restaurant is giving up which is a shame as multiple generations of family members have eaten here while growing up in the area. read more

WARNING ! Service was horrible. No one could figure out what was going on. The cook even had to come out of the kitchen to help figure out the drink order. There was one large party in the private room and pretty much the dining room was empty except us. The only thing we got that was right was the garlic bread. Never got the salads we ordered and the pizza was not the one we ordered and was burnt. The owner would not give any compensation and made us pay the full bill for all THEIR mistakes. Figured I should update my review after eating here two nights ago! In my first review, I talked about how I would never be back to this place, but I had family up from Georgia and they insisted on going. Big mistake. The Haven has screwed up my vegetarian pizzas several times and refused to do anything about it since it was ordered as take out. I didn't think things could get worse, but they did the other night. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. No one in our party was slightly impressed by the food, and anyone who ate a dish with shrimp, including myself, now has symptoms and signs of food poisoning from the undercooked fish. Absolutely disgusted with a restaurant that used to be so good. The drinks were also unimpressive. I ordered a vodka cranberry that tasted like cheap hand sanitizer, and another person in our party had a rum and coke that tasted like just coke. Turns out they had forgotten the rum, but charged us for it. Our waitress though was very kind and I feel bad she has to work at such a restaurant. read more

We were looking for a good place to have pizza in Rhinelander, and being a Saturday night most places were packed. However, after entering Pizza Haven we were given almost immediate seating for our party of seven. The restaurant is very dark and comfortable and has a fairly decent game room and bar. We expected Pizza Haven to be freshly made appetizers and pizza, so we ordered Italian Fries, Cheesy Breadsticks and three kinds of pizza. Let's start with the cheesy breadsticks. I honestly cannot accurately describe what was served, it was almost as if you made macaroni and cheese with lumpy milk and then strained the noodles out and put the cheese sauce in a bowl. I'm guessing it was some sort of processed cheese and miracle whip. It was awful, and that's just the sauce. The breadsticks themselves were so hard and cold that they must have been frozen months prior to being served. They were so dry you could crush them into crumbs. The Italian fries didn't turn out too badly; it was basically a small pizza that was covered in what appeared to be spaghetti sauce and cut into strips. Not what we were expecting and definitely not too Italian. The cheese curds were excellent and I have to say they are on par for cheese in Wisconsin. The pizza was actually fairly decent, but without much color. Most of the vegetables were canned and textureless. The crust was not crispy, but was rather a soft kind of dough. The pizza was cooked perfectly, but it was served on a cardboard circle like what's on the bottom of a Jack's pizza. It doesn't really lend itself well to a "homemade" kind of feel. Overall I would definitely recommend trying another place before this one. read more

Such delicious pizza! I wasn't expecting it to be that good but it was very unique and I had to stop myself from eating the whole 10'! I did a build your own with the garlic sauce. And the ranch was A+. The serving staff was very friendly and funny. Felt like a spot for the locals. Definitely will be bringing my family here when we are stopping through. read more

I do NOT like writing bad reviews but I just can't find anything good to say about Pizza Haven. I have been warned that this place is expensive so I was anticipating spending some extra money here - and that's typically just fine as long as I'm getting what I'm paying for. After getting our carryout order home I was genuinely upset at how much money I spent here. Ordered a large Helen special (sausage, Canadian bacon, mushroom and green peppers) with black olives and the bread sticks with cheese sauce. The total was over $33. I knew as soon as I opened the pizza that it had been sitting, even though they told us they were "just finishing it up" when we got there to pick it up. It was hardly luke warm, the cheese was coagulated. I thought they missed the green peppers altogether; they were there, just not green. Is it even possible to get canned green peppers because that's what they looked/tasted like. Guessing they were old. The mushrooms were out of a can, so slimy I had to pick them all off. The crust was old too - outside was stale and chewy, inside wasn't cooked enough to hold the toppings on. The bread sticks and "cheese" sauce - I can't even describe it. Another review said it reminded them of a processed cheese product mixed with miracle whip and that pretty much sums it up. I think they sprinkled some Parmesan in there too. The strangest, most un-appetizing texture I've ever encountered. The bread sticks themselves were old, freezer burned, and crunchy to a point where I was afraid to break a tooth. I am not picky about pizza, I'll usually eat just about any including all of the cheep frozen kind. We threw all of this Pizza Haven pizza out. Absolutely horrendous. It wasn't even worth calling to complain about. The building itself is large and off the main highway. Apparently they host banquets and private parties there. It has not been updated since the late 70's, early 80's. Lots of dark wood paneling and spindles. There are no signs on the entrance to indicate where you go once you enter the building. There was one table there on a Sunday night at 6:30p. Guess the word has gotten out. Sad. read more

I'm really surprised to see so few reviews of this place considering it's been around forever. Anyway, I ended up going here on July 4th because it was the only pizza place open and ordered the oblong Fritz's special. I gotta say this was one of the best pizzas I've ever had and I'm from Chicago; absolutely delicious. The pizzas are quite pricey. $37 for the oblong, but oh so good!!!!! read more

Ambiance: original mid-century dark wood tones-architectural features, very long bar, ample dining area, game room, painted wall mural, quiet forested setting w/ much parking and a pool table-not fancy or cookie cutter. We have been buying pizza here (eat in & take out) for twenty years. We love the pizza-it takes awhile to cook so be prepared to wait. Pricing not terrible-we feel the home-made quality is worth the price. Good place for large groups with children or couples on date night. If you value traditional decor and good pizza, The Haven will satisfy. I cannot comment on their other menu items because I have only eaten the pizza. read more

This is one of our favorite places to eat and drink. The food is good and the prices are very reasonable. We love their pizza-I like the Fritz and my wife likes the cauliflower crust. The cheese curds are very good as is their lasagna and spaghetti. We recommend this place to anyone. read more

One of my favorite Pizza's in the northwoods! I've been coming there since I was a kid, and now we go there after work once in a while for a great 'za and conversation. It's a 2nd generation family owned business that tries very hard to take care of their customers. (Three sisters run it now.) The Haven's history goes back to the 50's or 60's and they've been consistent and yummy every time I've been there. We always order the largest pizza, because their leftovers heat up excellent in the oven. read more

I moved to Rhinelander last year and checked out the Pizza Haven. My first impressions were about the atmosphere, it's almost like an old bowling alley that was turned into a restaurant. There are lots of locals at the bar, you will hear personal stories of long time friends talking to each other. The food is really good in my opinion, but I have only ever sat down to eat, and I order the pizza or cheese curds, nothing else. I am always impressed by the pizza crust when it is fresh out of the oven, it's a great cracker crust. I have taken my family there for a second time recently and they loved the pizza too. I don't remember the price being expensive to feed 5, but as I mentioned, we didn't get extras, only 2 pizzas, drinks and a cheese curd appetizer. read more

Every year I head to Rhinelander we always make the time to go to The Haven, food has always been worth the wait. This year was the exception, found 2 chunks of wood in my pizza. I agree with the previous post that the serving staff is a little slow. I flagged someone down who said they would let my server know about the wood. Our server eventually came over and asked if everything was ok, I let her know about the wood chunks and she stated that she had heard (seemed odd that she asked if everything was ok?) She went and spoke with the owner, came back and said it was most likely from a bad batch of mushrooms. I was surprised he didn't come out and make an attempt to pretend he cared. Overall everyone in my party agreed it was very odd how it was handled. I was told they would take $5 off the bill but they neglected to do so. read more

Wanted to like it but...... So I've been coming to the three lakes area most years for the past 20 years. My wife and I were stealing away for a date to rhinelander and on the recommendation of our family, decided to try The Haven pizza. We got there and found the restaurant to be straight out of the 70's. Not exactly our style, but thought hey, if these guys have been making great pizza that many years, who's to judge the decor. We sat down and ordered a couple of lemonades. We were brought what tasted like water with a hint of lemon. After asking to check the lemonade because it was likely running low on syrup, the waitress came back to tell us there wouldn't be lemonade that night anymore. Ok. On to apps My wife and I were hungry and breadsticks sounded good. Tried to order those but were told they were out of those as well. Ok, decided on the cheesy garlic bread. Honestly, the only higher point for the night and the reason this trip got 2 stars instead of one. It's good. Could have been cooked a little longer to completely melt the cheese, but was tasty. On to pizza. After hearing the hype, we were excited for this. Menu says handmade and needs some time. For good pizza, I can't agree more. We ordered all sausage and half pepperoni. When it came out, we were shocked. I will try to post the pic. It was orange, covered in grease, had a very thin soggy crust, and just disintegrated in your mouth after biting. It was awful. We were one of 3 tables in the restaurant so didn't have anything to compare to. We coughed some down and decided it was time to go. After paying and walking out, other pizzas did look better than ours had. When we showed the pic to my parents they said ours was nothing like they had recently had. We got here around 4 and were seated right away, turns out it was before the "dinner rush" which I did not expect, the place filled up fast, and it is beyond me as to why. The place is completely preserved from 1960 or whenever it was decorated. It's dark and dingy and greasy. The game room still has original carpet...ON THE WALLS. I can't imagine how much grease and smoke is soaked in there. Yuck. The waitress was nice, the pizza, not so much. It was so greasy the spatula handle was coated and I actually couldn't get a grip on it. It was dripping off, orange and viscous. And I get pizza is salty but this was dangerous, I'm still downing water. Just not good. The parking lot was a disorganized disaster when we left and could hardly get out for all the cars. WHY people WHY? If I never came here again I'd be fine. read more

Im from Rhinelander and have to say, its just as disappointing as always. Atmosphere is depressing, too dark. Food was worse than ever. Had their breadsticks, the "cheese dip" tasted like it was warmed up thousand island dressing. Had a super weird texture, and taste. The sticks themselves were weird little odd shaped lightweight things. Garlic/tomato bread was fairly good. Pizza was a HUGE HUGE disappointment. We got a 14 inch Helens, it was overcooked, but what was most disturbing was the sauce. It almost looked and tasted like tomato soup. It was a weird light orange with no flavor at all. Service was decent, couldn't fault that at all. Im going to throw out that we are not overly fussy eaters, have never sent food back nor complained, but felt this was bad enough to put out there so others aren't as disappointed as we where. Ive been to weddings out there that I was more than pleased with the food. Might have been a new cook, or just a bad night for the cook? I used to frequent Pizza Haven since I was young during trips up north to the cabin in Rhinelander with my parents. Me and a couple friends decided to stop in again and see if it was how I remembered it. It was pretty slow on a Saturday night which was surprising. We came in around 9PM so maybe they have an early crowd? We got a spot at the bar and ordered some drinks, a pizza, and an appetizer of breaded mushrooms. The bartender was very friendly, but the service didn't seem to be at where it should with only a handful of people at the bar. She found most of her time occupied with a group of men that were pounding back hard alcohol. She was very apologetic though when she checked on us and found our drinks empty. The breaded mushrooms were pretty lackluster, and seemed to have had a bit of freezer burn taste. The pizza (and game room - later) were what I remember as a child and it was still good. Your typical bar pizza with the choice of about 4 different sizes. We did the 14" and it was perfect for 3 people. Cut into squares "Wisconsin style" with a generous topping of cheese. When we got our bill we were surprised at how cheap it was. Between 3 people we each had 2 drinks, an app, and a pizza, and the total was only about $18. After our meal and drinks I wanted to check out the game room to reminisce on the little room where I spent so much time as a child. It doesn't seem to have changed in 20 years which is a good thing. There's still and air hockey table against one wall, a light gun arcade game, 2 pinball machines (Star Wars! and Battlestar Galactica) and a few others. All in all, not the best food or service, but it's a place that has seen the test of time. If not for my childhood memories, I may have given it a slightly lower review, but it's definitely worth checking out if you're in the mood for a good pizza and a beer. read more

Went to Haven on New Years evening,first time in quite a while it used to be a go to when kids were growing up. We had a group of six adults the restraint wasn't busy and service was good as were appetizers. Disappointment started with salad bar low on everything asked for lettuce 3 times. Then the food came everyone was disappointed especially when bills came. We are very easy going people and never leave reviews but we're all disappointed will not be returning anytime soon. read more

My husband grew up going here each time his family would come up from Illinois. After hearing about it for years, we have it a try as adults. The pizza was great greasy goodness at its best. We had the chicken fingers as an appetizer and they were delish. This place is a great affordable alternative to the higher priced supper clubs of Rhinelander. read more

Just moved here over the summer. Been looking for a pizza place since! Still looking. Went on a Saturday night about 6 pm. Was not crowded at all. 2 pizza and 2 deep fried apps took well over an hour. Service was ok at best. Kinda slow not on top of drinks. Now the pizza was so so . canned mushrooms, pre cooked sausage, and bland sauce. Better then frozen but not by much. Wish this was a better review but I'm still looking for a pizza joint. The salad was brown. I'm not sure what to think but,when you are setting up a salad bar if it looks gross get new lettuce! Pizza was ok. Over the years the pizza has gotten worse. I use to love the pizza here but now it seems like you get a little cheese and a lot of sauce.Chicken sandwich looked good tasted horrible. Our service was great. This is a hidden gem in Rhinelander. The restaurant is very dark when you enter due to not having any windows plus it is still locked in time from the seventies/eighties from the decor to the jukebox. We had a group of 10 and were able to get a table right away. The pizza is a very thin crust that they cut into little squares. It tasted great. Their is also a bar with a pool table, darts, and a small game room for the kids. I plan on going back next time I head up north. read more

Had you of told me that one of the best thin crust pizza's I would ever have the pleasure to eat would be found in the Northwoods, I would have never of believed you. "Pizza is something we get at home, not on vacation" has been a motto that has unfortunately robbed us of the great pizza at Pizza Haven for far too many summers. In my opinion, this is the best pizza place on the planet. I know the service can be slow and the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired (no windows), but the pizza is SO GOOD. The sauce is different than anything I have ever had before and the crust is perfect. I love square cut pizza and a place that can provide space for a large crowd. Worst service ever. My husband called in a pizza order for our family at 3:30 for carry out. We asked to pick the pizzas up at 6:00 pm. The staff said that was fine. We got there a few minutes after 6:00 and were told they would not be ready for another 20 to 30 more minutes. (Meaning they were not even baked yet.) The Haven staff did nothing to make the situation better. We were forced to pay full price and wait for the terribly long overdue pizzas. And then when we finally got the pizzas, one was totally burnt and another had the wrong ingredients. Amateur hour!!!!!!! Needless to say we were not happy and will not be returning. read more
