We have been coming here for years and several chef changes. We stopped in tonight and discovered it was Wednesday Tapas Night. The restaurant is definitely a north woods place. So Tapas is kind of outside the box. I have to say they knocked it out of the park tonight! Our friendly server recommended 2-3 plates per person. We did 3 each. Why not?! Everything was exceptional! I've been coming up to Rhinelander for over 10 years with my family every summer. We decided to try this restaurant for the first time tonight, and we were massively disappointed. If you're in the restaurant industry, there's always certain things that stand out that indicate the restaurant is either struggling or perhaps resting on their laurels, given the historic reputation Holiday Acres carries amongst their guests. The service, while friendly, was more akin to a diner than a supper club. Drinks were placed and never brought out, water glasses were never refilled. Silverware was dirty. Several employees are assigned multiple jobs, the host was also the bus boy and our server seemed to be running all over the restaurant as well. The food was okay at best. We tried the blackened salmon salad, more burnt than blackened and very dry. We also had the walleye, the fish was great while the sides, bland green beans and plain white rice seemingly thrown on the plate, did not pair well. Easy to say we won't be back. Perhaps the owner, seated near the bar, should pay closer attention to his paying guests than entertaining folks at his table. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us by friends, it was our first time here and we had a great time! we went through the unique Gift Shop nearby, then had a cocktail at Restaurants bar area. it was beautiful! the place looks like a Lodge and we admired how warm and comfortable it felt. cocktails were perfect. we ate a delicious steak dinner that was done to our tastes and we were provided great service from everyone! one of the best parts was walking around reading about the history of this Resort and Restaurant that was posted on the walls. we ended up throwing 3 coins (Restaurant provided) over our shoulders into the fountain! perfect way to end our day! we are now loyal fans and will return for another good time and tasty food. read more

Three Coins is a rare find in the Northwoods. I recommend reservations as it gets quite busy. I had haddock tapenade with lemon risotto. It was delicious and well presented. My partner had their pork dish with portobello ravioli- also delicious. Another member of our group had pan fried walleye and she loved it. Waitstaff was a little slow but there was a large dining area for two people to handle. What's the rush? It was an enjoyable experience and we'll return! read more

Several miles off Hwy 8 in the tall pines, and on the shore of Lake Thompson (no view of the lake from the restaurant), Three Coins Restaurant has a nice northern atmosphere. We started with the Articoke Dip which was deliciously creamy. I had the Caprese Salad with Grilled Shrimp, and my husband had the Fresh Salmon. Both entrees were excellent and nicely presented. My husband loved the salmon which was topped with crispy fried spinach and a brown butter sauce. The mushroom risotto was also very creamy. The service was very professional. read more

We enjoyed dinner at Three Coins on a Saturday night. The decor is cozy and lodgelike, great for a night when snow flurries were falling, as they were when we were there. I tried my first Brandy Alexander - delish! I ordered the Pork Athena and it was great, however the smoked beef loin my husband ordered attracted more of my attention with its wonderful bleu cheesiness and hearty smoke flavor obtained from the chef's smoker out back. We ended up swapping meals part way through and I finished his. Even my house salad with zesty vinaigrette and the dill bread and oatmeal bread were great. We also visited the restaurant the next morning for breakfast. Looks like we were the only guests up so early looking for food, so we dined alone in the very quiet dining room. It's a large restaurant with fairly nice atmosphere and somehow they manage to put out consistently good food that I would consider one of the only "fine dining" restaurants in the Northwoods. The cheese curd appetizer appears to be made fresh in-house rather than a lot of places that get frozen, over-breaded curds and just drop them into the fryer. The local Grilled Elk is excellent with a really good risotto on the side and nice sauces. The fried walleye was good but definitely not great, however on multiple visits we've enjoyed the food and had very friendly service. Even the wine list is okay (which is about as good as it gets in the Northwoods) and the cocktails are very well made. If you're in the area, it's worth a visit to the Three Coins Restaurant - strange name but great food and not exorbitantly priced. read more

We have a cottage in the area and are frequent customers. They put on an amazing brunch and Friday night fish buffet. I'm a big fan of their prime rib on Saturdays. The service is consistently good. Dining with small children has never been a problem. I will say that my wife and I were disappointed to find different prices on the website, than when we dined at 3-Coins. The food and service has always been good, and the last time we dined there, the chef went around to tables and asked how the food was. He was very informative and courteous. This is by far our favorite "nice" restaurant to dine at in Rhinelander. read more

What a great supper club!!! This gem is hidden away and it's part of Holiday Acres Resort, but open to the public. When we got to the resturant we spent a couple minutes exploring the main office and looking around the grounds. All the staff we talked to were extremely friendly and welcoming. I was so impressed with the resort and everything it offers I now want to vacation there some day! We went to the bar to have a drink before our meal. After our cocktails and great conversation with our bartender we went to our table. We all opted to have their Friday night buffet. We could not resist it! What an amazing selection of food, mostly focusing on seafood, but there were plenty of other options for people looking for something outside of the seafood category. The food was all well seasoned and tasted homemade. No generic boring buffet food here. The baked chicken was a nice break from the usual broasted chicken you have at supper clubs. It was seasoned well and moist! Some of the other highlights of the buffet were the clam chowder and potato pancakes. Our server was friendly and very attentive. Service and high quality food like this is hard to find these days. Can't wait to return! read more

My wife and I had just finished a unique visit to a great place, the Kovac Planetarium east of Rhinelander, when we decided to go ahead and try one of the highly rated restaurants on Yelp Rhinelander. That's Three Coins Restaurant which is part of Holiday Acres Resort. The food, ambiance and friendliness of the staff didn't disappoint us. This is a real gem in the north woods of Wisconsin. This restaurant is part of the Holidays resort just outside of RHINELANDER . The service and food were excellent. For those staying at the resort- wow what a great place for breakfast lunch and dinner. They have a special buffet on Fridays from 5-9 pm. They have a Sunday breakfast from 8-12:30 pm. One of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. We walked in and stood around waiting for 10 minutes before anyone greeted us. After being brought to our table, we waited another 10 minutes for the waitress to arrive. The first thing she tells us is, "A group of 12 is coming in so I need to hurry. Do you know what you want to eat?" She never even took our drink order. Then after waiting for 10 mins, we assume we can just go to the buffet whenever. She never explained anything. Since my daughter and I have gluten allergies, we were excited to see a separate gluten-free menu. My daughter ordered Fettuccine Alfredo and I ordered the Thai Shrimp. 15 mins later, the waitress comes out and says that isn't gluten free (even though it's on the separate gluten free menu) so I need to order something else. I said OK, where is the menu so I can pick something else, and she rolls her eyes and says it's in back. When she returned, I picked the walleye dish and French fries. 20 mins later she comes out with my daughters fettuccine and my fish. She says, just so you know the fries are fried in the same fryer as the non gluten-free stuff so if I'm sensitive to gluten, I should not eat the fries. I was frustrated but was going to just eat the fish only to find out that the fish was placed on top of the French fries. I told her to cancel the order. She insisted she make a new one with a baked potato instead of the fries. I asked if it would take long and she promised it wouldn't. 20 more minutes later she came out with fish and a side of gluten free noodles (with nothing on them). It was all too much, so I went and talked to the manager who apologized and said they missed the mark and were under-staffed. By this time I wasn't even hungry anymore and didn't touch the food. Everyone else was already done eating anyway. The waitress never came by to refill waters or check in, we were on our own. Other tables nearby were taking their dishes up to the bar too because nobody was removing them from the table. Ultimately, They took my meal off the bill (which I didn't eat anyway) and also took my wife's buffet off the bill. In my opinion, he should have covered our whole check for having to deal with almost 2 hours of this. We will definitely not be returning and I suggest you don't either. What a nightmare. read more

Once again we had a fabulous experience at the 3 Coins Restaurant last night! We have been coming here each summer for decades and we can always count on great comfort food, a lovely atmosphere, charming staff, and pleasant music. It feels like a homey Wisconsin Supper Club crossed with a classic jazz club. Although the music often comes from a stereo now, the atmosphere and songs remain, and I can still easily picture my grandparents, all dressed up, dancing into the night. The family who owns the restaurant is wonderful and they have put an extraordinary amount of love and energy into this hidden gem in the woods. Do yourself a favor and come here! We arrived at 5pm on a Wednesday evening. Our large group was seated immediately. We received our cocktails in a timely manner. Their brandy ole fashions are great as noted by others. I did like some things about Three Coins, but a few things soured me from my experience at this restaurant. This is a fairly pricey restaurant, especially considering location. That means the food and service should be decent. I found both the food and service to be hit or miss - at times good, but at times not good. The chowder was very oversalted, extremely fishy-smelling, and had fish bones in it. I informed the server, who didn't seem concerned or apologetic. Service was not that great - slow and inconsistent, and we had to flag down someone for water refills. I had prime rib, and my companion had pork. Both meats were well cooked and seasoned. The french fries were pretty ordinary. At the end of our meal, my companion ordered a grasshopper, and it took over 15 minutes to receive it. We were not charged for the drink due to the length of the wait. The prime rib was the special, and the sign stated it was grilled or bleu cheese encrusted for $18.95. We ended up being charged an extra $2 for the bleu cheese, which was not specified on the signage, and our server didn't let us know upon ordering. That left a sour taste for me. The signage clearly stated the cost, but we were charged more. read more

This is our favorite place in Rhinelander for dinner and we are consistently pleased. Tonight even though it was Friday and we had no reservation we had great service and a wonderful meal. My wife and I went there early on a Thursday evening and it was not very crowded. The service was good, the staff was friendly and the food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. The dining area is a relatively large open area with a Northwoods feel so it can get a little loud. My wife had the 8 oz Filet and I had the Beef Au Poivre. We both ordered the meat to be prepared medium rare. The filet was extremely thick and was more rare than medium rare and the Beef Au Poivre was medium; nonetheless, both were flavorful and tender. The meals came with salad which were very simple and I had the French Onion soup which was very good. Overall the meal was very good albeit slightly on the pricey side ($70 with one drink each). read more

Very poor lunch experience. The restaurant sounded great, but when we arrived at 12:15 for lunch (on a summer Saturday), we were informed the restaurant wasn't open and we could get lunch in the coffee shop. So......no choice. The waitress and short cook were both busy cleaning tables and no one else was there. After about 10 minutes the waitress came over and asked if we wanted menus...said, "yes". Very limited lunch selections, and no alcohol. My goal was to leave, so I went up to the waitress and said, "We were looking for somewhere we could also get a beer with lunch". She said she could go to the bar and get one. It took about 20 minutes to get a hamburger and grilled cheese. Meanwhile a "cook" sauntered in. He had on a cook apron which he brought up to his face and wiped his face on. Never washed his hands!!!!! While we were waiting, 10 young girls came in (likely employees wearing Holiday Acres shirts), and they were all served their lunches before us I've written enough....no food yet, but I would not recommend this to anyone! read more

Food was good - waitress was rude - same as others have stated - oh we have a large party of 12 or something coming I need to be quick - place was otherwise at least half empty - one server - one bus girl who we had to flag down in the end to take our check - older female server clearly stressed and in the wrong job - down to poor wait staff and poor management to allow this - we had family in from Canada - one of our guests ordered chicken she brought him shrimp - he said this isn't want I ordered - the server argues with him - and took out her note book - just because you wrote it down incorrectly doesn't mean that's what he ordered I was sitting opposite him and I heard him ask for chicken - the server said well can't you just eat it - which he did - but he and his wife were not happy - "manager" or other lady came over and asked was everything ok, we lied and said yes - it was their last night with us and we didn't' want a fight with the rude and surly server - simply unacceptable - 1 star - read more

Definitely check this place out for a drink: it's a Northwoods classic. Excellent "upscale" woodsy atmosphere. The bar is "free form oval" -shaped and the bartenders work below floor level so instead of bar stools you sit on regular height dining chairs...pretty unusual and very comfortable. It's a big bar area completely surrounded by windows--very nice, in every season. The whole bar area is raised a few steps above the dining area and looks out on it as well as the outdoors--great combo. The dining is 3 star at best. Nothing special, but not bad...pretty average. On the last few visits food has taken a long time and is a little pricey. I will say this: one of the owner's is often on hand and is happy to hear if something's going wrong and does her best to make it right. Three Coins is part of the Holiday Acres resort, and an overnight stay, a drink and even a meal is a great way to spend a weekend, so consider the dining as just part of the overall package. read more

The food here is excellent, don't get me wrong. My entire meal was mouthwatering, from the cheese nuggets, salad, and bread, to my petite filet and jumbo shrimp. So why is my rating so low? If I could give zero stars I would. After making a reservation for our large party of out of town family and friends we were absolutely embarrassed and ashamed for taking them here. Our experience started out with the waitress informing us she needed to hurry because she had a table of twelve coming in (compared to our 17). No greeting or introducing herself... This was literally the first thing out of her mouth. Menus were given and 20 minutes later she returns. Not one of us were asked for our drink order (which she would have made a killing off of alone). All but three in our party ordered the buffet with a choice of salad. We were all impatient waiting 20+ minutes for our salads we got up and helped ourselves to the buffet. When our salads did arrive they were literally just thrown onto the table randomly all while the waitress acted as if we were a huge inconvenience to her. After the majority of our party was finished eating the three orders came out. One being gluten free was placed in front of our guest and immediately informed that it indeed was not gluten free but just don't eat the french frys was the waitresses suggestion. The french frys were touching his other food. Being it was so late that these three plates were received he informed her it was fine and he'd just get food elsewhere. She insisted it would be only a few minutes for a new plate to be made with baked potato instead. He agreed. Our other guest also did not receive half of his meal and she was reminded twice. 40 minutes later the new gluten free plate was brought out and was not what was ordered. A third reminder for our other guests meal was given. It was brought out with our checks. Not once were we asked if everything was ok or if we needed anything. We even had to retrieve our own water from behind a closed down bar in the back room we were in. A complaint was made and a gentleman in a chef suit came out and said he apologized for the bad service he heard we've had and that it happens but he hopes we'll give them another chance in the future. He also stated his sister was lossing it. Assuming he was referring to our waitress? It was as if he found this amusing. No apology from the waitress. Being a former waitress and now a business manager I would have apologized profusely and at least bought the group a round of drinks or discounted meals. Nothing was done to make up for the lousy experience we had. Receiving our bills was also a fiasco between three checks. When payment was issued two reminders had to be made to bring back one of the credit cards. It felt as if we were being taped on a hidden camera show. Unbelievably horrible service. At the end while getting my last plate of food from the buffet a fresh platter was put in front of me on the buffet. I took the first scoop and a big black hair hung off of the serving spoon inside of the food. I was entirely too embarrassed to even mention this. I would never recommend this establishment to any of our guests or out of town visitors. In fact I would specifically start out by telling them to stay away at all costs. Had our best meal of the week in northern Wisconsin. The beef ribs had a subtle smoked flavor that complimented the barbecue. Moist and delicious! Salmon was not over baked as usually happens in restaurants not specializing in sea food. Great, elegant atmosphere and attentive yet discreet service. We will be back often! read more
