Brown Street 151 fills an important niche in Oneida County--a restaurant that offers a step up in cuisine and ambience from a typical Wisconsin supper club, bar and grill, sports pub or franchise operation. While not as chic as a fine dining establishment in a metropolitan area like Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago or New York, it's as classy as it gets north of highway eight. We made a reservation for a Saturday evening - they could have accommodated us as walk-ins (and walk-ins are welcome) but I'd err on calling for a reservation and securing a table, especially on a popular day of the week. With a reservation we were promptly seated and waited on. I started with a dry martini and my wife picked a wine from a pretty decent wine list. It was a great martini--see my photos. Many of the items on the menu are what one would expect, but there were a few that piqued my interest, in particular the schnitzel. As a frequent visitor to the Austrian Tirol and Bavaria, I had to give it a try. My wife opted for salmon. The entrees included soup or salad. I went with lobster bisque and my wife went with chicken noodle soup. The bisque was rich and flavorful. Though the bread stick was out of a box as opposed to baked in house, it was an acceptable accompaniment to the soup. As for the entree, the schnitzel was prepared the way I like it--pan fried and not deep fried. With a properly breaded, seasoned and crispy crust, the pork itself was perfectly cooked. I could eat a schnitzel like this every day! The Spätzle was fine and the sauce tasted good but it was a little thin. The red cabbage was definitely sour but lacked the sweetness necessary to balance the acid. I'd suggest that the chef check out the red cabbage recipe from Alinea which has an excellent balance of sweet and sour. And one more suggestion to mimic the schnitzel I've had in the Tirol and Bavaria, a dollop of sweet jelly to spread on the cutlet--preferably a white wine jelly fortified with herbs like rosemary. That said, the dish was great and I would order it again. I only took a bite of my wife's entree, but the hollandaise and salmon was good. She especially liked the kale. To end the evening we shared a dessert. My wife makes a DG tiramisu and we've had some great tiramisu's in Italy. This one was right up there, though the espresso soaked lady fingers were a bit weak. Nevertheless, as you can see from my photo, we demolished it. A nice grappa or Tirolian schnapps would have been the perfect finale but alas the bar was not that well stocked. All in all a decent dinner, a place I will return to in the future, and a great addition to the culinary scene in the region. read more

Brown Street is one of the nicer restaurants in Rhinelander. The vibe is upbeat and the waitresses were quick and efficient. We were in town for my daughters wedding and I called at about 5:30 to get a 6pm reservation for 6. They easily accommodated, and after being there for a few moments one of the ladies told us there was only 3 people working, but let me tell you, they never skipped a beat. Everything we ordered was delicious, and I highly recommend a crock of their house made soups. I had the French onion and it was so good. For mains my husband ordered the steak tips with spaetzel, friends got the pasta, but the real star was the empress chicken! It was perfect! Also.. I would be a let down if I didn't tell you to order the cheese curds. Fried perfectly, light and crispy, not greasy.. and so so so good! This is definitely worth a stop for anyone local or visiting!! read more

Just had the best experience at Brown Street 151, we went on their Italian night with about 12 people in our party and everyone raved about the entire experience. The Italian salad was incredible, the walleye was insanely delicious and was such a generous portion and after sampling what everyone ate there was nothing I didn't love. Equally as good as the food was the service, they brought my toddlers food out first (without me asking) I think all restaurants should do that because it kept my son happy and entertained. I also came with my 6 month old twins and the angel of the hostess said if at any point I wanted her to hold one she would and she DID! I got to eat an excellent meal in peace. I've been coming to rhinelander for the last 33 summers and it was the best meal out we've ever had here. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back. read more

So usually I say the service and food here is the best in the area. But to be questioned about tip at the table is absolutely insane. The term gratitude is the feeling of appreciation for the action that was provided. Tipping culture is absolutely outrageous. If tips matter that much to the staff you should look into another profession. Service was great up until that point. I would much rather spend money at an establishment where tips aren't the main focus of the staff. I understand that tipping is a very important part of the meal, but a $24 tip on a $175 bill is more than acceptable. I have never in my life left an establishment with a more sour taste in my mouth than I did tonight. Thank you to the staff for making what was supposed to be a wonderful night a very poor experience. I can definitely say the food is good but based on that event I will not be eating at this establishment anymore if the tip is the most important part of the night for the servers. read more

Very good food and atmosphere! We felt very welcome at this restaurant. What a great find!

Food was excellent, both the pork medallions with risotto and steak tips with spaetzle. Service was a bit slow. Drinks were great.
