I work in customer service, so when someone says they are going out for a fish fry I'll ask where's your favorite place to go? 9/10 it's Murtaughs. So of course I have to try it and let me tell you... it did NOT disappoint! I have eaten there there before and had their delicious deli sandwiches and their burgers are cooked to perfection, but wow! It's all you can eat deep fried pollack. Made to order beer battered or cajun. Included Murtaugh's clam chowder(I WANTED TO BATHE IN THIS STUFF, SO GOOD!), coleslaw, rye bread, their famous made from scratch potato salad (YUMMO! ) or french fries, lemon & tarter. And yay! They had malt vinegar! I love that with my fish. And let's not forget our bartender (sorry sir, I forgot your name ) but he was just on top of EVERYTHING! Fast, polite, engaging and a great smile! One by one I'm finally making it to places in the area that I've not visited yet. Last week a civic group my wife belongs to scheduled a meeting at T Murtaugh's so we decided to stick around for dinner (and to celebrate a birthday) after the meeting was over. It was't busy so I grabbed a booth and ordered a beer while the meeting continued at another table. The number of tap beer selections was rather paltry and generic, especially considering the popularity of local and regional craft beer these days. Only one struck my fancy -- and it turns out it wasn't very good -- but that is on the brewery, not the bar. On the other hand, the beer glass was a tad sticky. I don't know if they sloshed some beer over the rim while pouring it or if it wasn't washed real well, but either way it didn't create a good first impression. In fact, now that I think back on it, the tables and banquettes were kind of grimy and tacky too. The first table I looked at was dirty enough that I selected another. The Eatery offers a standard selection of appetizers and a wide variety of burgers, sandwiches and wraps including a few meatless/vegetarian options (not clearly vegan though -- I suspect vegans will have to ask the kitchen ask to hold ingredients like cheese and mayo). Fish sandwiches are listed as a meatless option -- not exactly accurate in my opinion. We started with an order of fried cheese curds because our exchange student from Indonesia had never tasted them and wanted to try them. Though he now knows how they taste -- in a general sense -- unfortunately they were bulk frozen food nuggets and not the best quality. For our entrees, I ordered the "famous" Reuben with fries, my wife selected the Gyros, and our student went with a steak sandwich. I found the Reuben to be pretty well constructed with ample amounts and an appropriate balance of corned beef, sauerkraut, melted cheese and dressing. The seasoning and flavor were spot on. You probably won't find a better Reuben anywhere else in the north woods. The others enjoyed their sandwiches too. However, I believe all our sandwiches were made with bulk, processed foods from the local restaurant supplier. Though the taste is OK and they'll fill you up, the sandwiches we ordered -- and the Reuben in particular -- fall far short of the quality you'd expect from an authentic Jewish deli or Greek restaurant in New York City or Chicago. That said, I'll probably head back to T Murtaugh's Pub and Eatery the next time I get a hankering for a Reuben in Minocqua. read more

Eh... this isn't it. Husband's burger was very small, the bun was dry, and overall no flavor. My Reuben was disappointing. Corned beef was flavorless (how does that even happen??), the bread was too thin to hold the insides together, and it ended up soggy as hell. The fries were the only good part of the meal. The up-charge for fries and the 3% service fee for and card transactions made the bill ridiculously high. Wouldn't go back. read more

I have never been into a place that was so hostile right off the bat, It was instant eye rolls and gossip. Ive worked as a bartender for a few years and I would never act the way the staff did. A very interesting bar/restaurant that is downtown Minocqua. Upon walking in, I noticed that this is not a handicap-accessible bar. There is a very large step up, that was somewhat difficult for my grandma to maneuver. The décor is somewhat outdated and there are dollar bills stapled into the ceiling, which was interesting to look at. There is a dining room separate from the bar, that doesn't have high-top chairs. For starters we ordered the onion rings, which were a big hit by all of us. They were fried to perfection and the ranch dipping sauce was a good compliment. I ordered a buffalo chicken wrap and it was VERY good. The fries were also very appetizing. My sister loved that they had a section of their menu that consisted of meatless choices, since most places Up North rarely have that. Overall, its an outdated, but still very good bar, the service was above average, the food was decent for a bar Up North, and looking around at all the dollar bills on the ceiling was entertaining. Incredibly rude waitstaff. We walked into the restaurant for our first drink of the night and were immediately met with hostility. We overheard patrons at the bar bantering with the bartender about having to serve "children" all day. Two people from our group of five went to the bar to order drinks (to avoid overwhelming the bar), and one of the other bartenders walked over to the rest of our table and tersely told them they needed to order at the bar. I wouldn't have thought twice about most of the interactions if they hadn't been rude to us from the moment we entered the restaurant despite my small, quiet group not creating any problems. The bartender rolled her eyes at us when we politely asked to play Shake of the Day. On our way out of the bar, two of the patrons who were in cahoots with the bartenders yelled at us that it would've been "nice to tip [your] bartender," despite us leaving a 50%+ tip on Shake of the Day. I have never seen employees less enthusiastic about their jobs or more eager to prey on cordial and helpless young adults. read more

Super solid "Irish" pub in the middle of Minocqua. Irish goes in quotes because, well, you know the kind. Sports bars with a super laid-back, casual atmosphere that happen to bill themselves as Irish pubs. I mean, there are essentially two types of Irish pubs in the good ol' US of A as best I can ascertain. Type I: Dark woods, low lights, serious Guinness pours, Red Breast, bangers and mash if they're also a restaurant, Irish music in the corner, Slainte all up in the hizzy... Type II: Sports bar plus some shamrocks from a party store strung up somewhere and an Irish name. (As I've already note, T Murtaugh's falls more into this category... ) But that's not a bad thing, really. I mean, I like the faux-Irish-sports bars myself from time to time. And this one? Good pub food, nice staff, good prices... heck, 6 tiny beers for 6 bucks? Win win win. A great place for a drink and a bite if you're in the northwoods of glorious, glorious Wisconsin. read more

Visiting Woodruff for the week and we decided to hit Martaugh's for dinner before the water show. I ordered the Philly Cheese steak with jalapeno's, fries and an ice tea. My granddaughter ordered the Italian Beef with fries and lemonade. My friends order the jalapeño poppers and split an italian beef. My Philly was good and came with a side of au jus. Not great, but good, and I'd order it again (thanks to the extra bite the jalapeno's gave it). Fries were good. I also had an order of fried cheese curds to share at the table. They were good and came with a ranch dipping sauce. My granddaughter liked her Italian beef but said it was rather plain. I think she's gotten spoiled by Portillo's Italian beefs from Chicago area. All the food was good, nice bar and good service. I'll give it three stars....possibly could be 4. read more

The fish fry was excellent. The fish was not some regular frozen stuff from a deep fryer. They had Cajun and regular, I chose the Cajun and not disappointed. We got there late on a Friday night and the waitress looked like she was done and ready to get the hell out of there but the food came out fast. Stopped into Murtaugh's on a very rainy day for lunch. Atmosphere was pretty standard for a bad/pub establishment with a bar on one side and restaurant seating on the other. Nothing about it really said "Irish pub" to me, however. But it was nice and very clean. The food was also pretty standard choices but aside from Corned beef, I again didn't see anything that said it was Irish. I was a little thrown off that to have a sandwich with a side it had to be chips unless I was to pay $2.50 extra. Not the worst thing in the world, certainly not a deal breaker - just seemed a little odd. I had the New York strip sandwich and it was done perfect and I felt I got my money's worth from it. As for the service, I do not have high complaints about it as it had gotten fairly busy and there were only two servers on. They didn't get much of a chance to check on us much so other than checking after we got out good (which was maybe 2 minutes after getting out food), we weren't checked on again. read more

Beautiful high ceilings and wood work and sitting area. We should have looked at the menu for Friday Fish. They only had haddock and cod. We are not fans of this type of fish. This is a great little lunch spot! The decor was outdated and dollar bills were on the ceiling. The menu was huge, maybe a little bit too big. Stopped here the Sunday after beef a Rama- bartender with long dark hair had an attitude and ignored our group of 4. The bar and tables were so dirty we could find seats together so had to stand for a while. There were 2 guys next to us who were served 3 drinks without asking while I had to beg the other bartender to get us a drink bar stops serving food at 5 (not sure why?!?) bartender seemed pleased at this and made sure everyone know with a sorry- not sorry attitude. We go to minocqua every year and this used to be one of our favorite places now it is so dirty and the service so bad we won't be back. Much cleaner places you can go in minocqua! The waitress was attentive and the food was fine . The TVs were plentiful and they were playing a woman's soccer game which was entertaining to watch as you ate. The chips are hard and not tasty in my opinion. The burger I got was the 1/3 pounder one. It was good. They randomly served us a Basket of popcorn at one point during our meal but the popcorn was good. Visiting from Chicago and brought my kids here because they offer items such as chicken tenders and hotdogs. Clearly not a family friendly place. Actually heard the waitress say "goddamn these kids are messy" and "I don't know why people bring their kids in here". Don't worry lady, we will never come back again. Service was horrible.
