This was the WORST overall experience I have had in a long time. We have been coming to Wendell's since it opened and have always viewed the long wait was an acceptable byproduct because of the great food. Sadly, that is not the case anymore. We were told 25 mins and ended up waiting over an hour. Ok...we took a walk, got a coffee, perused the antiques next door. We double checked to make sure we hadn't been passed up. Nope. We were told the kitchen needed to catch up. No Problem. We stared at the pretty fall leaves, discussed our looming hunger and hangovers, prepared for what we were going to order. Still waiting. We accepted it and looked forward to the food being hot and high quality since the kitchen was getting more time. The hunger pangs started to dig deeper. I began to re-evaluate my commitment to this brunch and my ability to withstand anymore time without sustenance. Hazy visions of yolky eggs and smothered carbs danced around as I stared into the restaurant's sparse diners. The couple next to us outside is given an apology about the wait from the cheerful woman who works there and is met with an eye roll. I judge the potential Karen and feel bad for the girl who has to serve them. Oh how naive I was. At this very instant I was unaware of the mini Karen that was beginning to grow inside of my vacant belly. More time goes by...I start contemplating life choices that have brought me to this point of hopeless hunger and waiting. We're up! Sat! It's happening...mini Karen is momentarily quelled. We order. Mine was a southern fried benedict with all the things that have helped me keep it together during the long road to service. Poached eggs, fried tomatoes, sriracha hollandaise smothered biscuits. I glance around and spot Karen...still not happy and without food. Hmmm...maybe she upset the staff and they are having her wait to calm down. More scanning and suspiciously no one has food. Still unaware of the pain to come I think nothing of it. Time goes by...I brown out a little and wonder if we had ever really ordered or if it was all a dream. My eyes narrow when food is spotted leaving the kitchen. Ok this is real and we will have food. More time goes by. Patrons all feel the relative rise and fall of excitement as food leaves the kitchen, but rarely arrives at their table. I wonder if this is where I die (of hunger). Food begins to come our direction. Coffee refills have been forgotten but who cares we are forging on. Fork in hand I poke those yokes. They are firm and lifeless. I begin to silently panic. No gooey yokes, no creamy hollandaise, raw unfried tomatoes, even the hash browns have given up hope and lay there cold and dismal. This can't be happening. I've made it this far...I will not turn back now. I signal the waitress. I apologize to her as I know she did not cook any of this atrocity and ask if I could get a side of hollandaise and possibly an egg. She looks as if I have asked for her first born. This isn't good. She says she will look into getting maybe a fried egg? Ugh. My mental clarity is beginning to slip and mini Karen is fighting to be let free. The cheerful woman from earlier comes over and says maybe they can get me a fried egg. These maybes are code. They mean you will never receive an egg yolk. I thank her. I know they just reopened and Covid has been hard. She looks at the sad misinterpretation of what a benedict should be and says there is a little sauce. If I don't eat something soon I will be full blown Karen and ask to see the manager. No eggs arrive. Minutes tick by like hours. Cheerful comes back and says she'll comp the benedict. I appreciate it and am happy I didn't have to ask. I feel bad, but remind myself of the bitter journey that has brought me here with no light and the end of the tunnel. Still no egg. I glumly poke at the cold graveyard of my breakfast. I am ready to throw in the towel and go somewhere for second breakfast. I signal the server to pay. She pops in the kitchen and egg makes it's way to the table. I hate and love this egg all at once. First bite. Ok the color begins rushing back to my face. Second bite. Crunch. Third bite. Another crunch. I spit it out and see large eggshells on the plate and in the egg remnants. A manic laughter begins to fill the empty space in my body. My time can never be regained and my hunger has ravaged my soul. My mind floats away to childhood memories of how your parents could make you feel so bad. Ended up here with a friend after seemingly everywhere else was a 2+ hour wait (to be expected on a Sunday at 11 am). They got us sat within 20 minutes and everything was great! I got the breakfast sandwich with avocado and a side of hash browns. The food was all tasty as well as the mimosas, however the drinks did not taste strong at all and it was $7 for a very small portion of mimosa. Overall though, I'd come back for the food! There are too many other good places on Tennyson to even bother with this place. Over priced, slow service, and subpar food. While it looks nicer than DJ's, the upgrades end there. Their "house made" english muffin was just a flat disc of bread. You can get better english muffins at King Sooper. The regular sausage? mushroom? (it was hard to tell) gravy was so full of rosemary and sage it was barely edible. Pancakes come with syrup already on them, which is strange. I can't be trusted to determine how much or if I want syrup? When I asked for more she said I wouldn't need it. It's my pancake, let me decide. The food was very small portions for a steep price. The tip for credit card reader defaults to 18% which is absurd for how poor the service was. It was $49 for 2 people who had breakfast and one drink each, which is an exorbitant amount of money for how small the portions were. Overall, with Javier's across the street and Cozy Cottage down the block, there is no reason I will be returning. This place is nothing special. New restaurant in the neighborhood. Was at first excited to try but after receiving our food, I will most likely wait a very long time before returning. The service was good, no issues with the wait staff. I ordered the French Toast which came out burned completely black. It was so bland. I only ordered the French toast, which normally is enough food, but you only get two small slices of bread, no sides such as fruit. They up-charged me for real maple syrup, which was annoying. OK, I was torn between giving Wendell's a 4 or 5 star rating. Here's the deal, we showed up and were seated in about 5 minutes. They were somewhat busy which is expected for a Sunday morning. It's a nice looking place. We ordered and waited for our food. And we waited. and we waited. It took around 30 minutes which is long for any meal but especially breakfast. While we definitely weren't happy about it, I've decided to give them the benefit of the doubt for a few reasons. First of all, they were only open for about 5 days so they're still figuring things out. Second, the waitress was very polite and apologetic the whole time. She kept my coffee full and kept checking on us. Finally, she also talked with the manager and he came over and did all he could to help out and show remorse. Sometimes problems will happen. I appreciate it when management(or anyone) takes responsibility and handles things well. They saved this yelp review and I can honestly say I will return which is big because I will not return to any place where I get bad service. I don't care how good the food is. So, how was the food? I had a breakfast sandwich and it was awesome. My daughter loved the scones and apparently liked my hash browns since she didn't let me have any of them! The menu is pretty diverse. 5 stars = LOVED IT I've been here twice and both times have been exceptional!! We sat at the bar both times and just fyi the bar is not open seating. Both bartenders rocked it, the POW is always mindblowing, crispy hashbrowns are on point, blood marys are perfectly spicy AND the staff is professional and kind. We had breakfast here yesterday. Definitely worth a trip back to see if our opinion changes, but here's the Pro/Con/Pro. PROS: Atmosphere was lovely, very comfortable, attractive, easy to relax. The menu was very creative and compelling, something for everyone, and not too complicated, with prices that implied the quality would be high. CON: both of us had dishes with poached eggs, and the eggs were waaayyyy undercooked; significant portion of the white was translucent, and the yellow was not warm. Yikes! we just scooted them to the edge of the dish. Out of the ashes arises the Phoenix. DJs is gone but is replaced with this jewell. From owners of the "way back" & "avanti," is Wendell's. This bldg was completely redone but basically has the same floorplan...less tables but a huge community table. The overgrown patio is well groomed and is slick now. It was opening weekend...so there is kinks to work out. He had waffles and bacon. I had seed toast #1 and poached eggs. Both had lattes. Everything was good except my eggs were cold. They made up for that. But on the table there is no sugar...no syrup...no salt and pepper. You must have these basics there. Eggs need salt. Coffee needs sugar. The waffle comes with syrup on it already WTF..... the latte cups are the same size of coffee cup.....they should be larger... come on now. I was so excited to try this place, they claim they have the best pancakes in Denver and I was craving pancakes! We got there and stood at the counter by the "please wait to be seated" sign waiting to be seated for a solid couple minutes before being acknowledged. Overlooked that, I see things are busy. But then we sat there for at least 20 minutes before anyone even came to the table. She told us how to use the QR code, we said we were ready to order already so she said she would be back in a sec to take our order. 10 minutes later, still nothing, not even a drink order. My friend and I stopped in to have lunch the other day. We looked at the menu on the black board and noticed there were no prices. No problem, we will just look at the prices on the phone app. No prices there either. We asked the waitress about this and she said all the meals are between $7 and $12. The manager came by and I said to him that as a consumer I liked to know the prices in order to help me make a choice. He said all items are between $9 and $14 and he wants us to order what we want and not worry about the price. Really! What planet does he live on? We went here on Monday and the food is beyond delicious - I got the cobb salad with chicken and it was one of the better salads that I've ever had in Denver. They have an awesome coffee bar too so I recommend trying the Latte. The fries were delicious too so be sure to try those for at least a side dish. The main reason that I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because I don't feel like the service was good. The staff was super slow and we had to wait 45 minutes after the restaurant was like half-full so that was odd. Wendell's is amazing. I wish there existed a sixth star to give it. We've been twice--no wait the first time for the center community table and a 15 minute wait just today. Amazing food, rather inspired ideas. We had brûlée'd grapefruit to start, plus fine cappuccinos and mimosas. Our server was pleasant and attentive. Where Wendell's truly shines is their Benedict menu; I've had the steak Benedict and the pulled pork Benedict. Pulled pork is absolutely fantastic; slightly crispy from a post-braise fry (I predict), served over a cornmeal cake subbed in for an English muffin. The eggs could not have been more perfectly poached--the whites fully done and the yolks cooks just past runny so they were like jelly. My wife ordered the chicken and waffle sliders. The chicken thighs were fried perfectly in a cornmeal heavy batter, and the waffles were delectable. The kiss of syrup augmented the touch of sweetness from the waffles. Wendell's rules. Not only was there insufficient time to mourn the loss of good ole DJ's, but I'm so pleased to say that there is no need to after all! Wendell's has filled DJ's shoes and then some! I love the updated space; the interior is bright and fresh, with a kickass historical Berkeley mural, to boot. And the staff is ever so friendly. My coffee never had time to get cold, and we were updated on our food times, which I love. Wendell's is what you've always wanted breakfast to be. The menu truly has something for everyone, from the classic diner fare to the fun foodie dishes. The sausage links are the bomb, the scrambles are incredible, and I challenge you to find a fluffier pancake in Denver... And if you just want a quick solo breakfast at the counter, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or fresh squeezed juice with a homemade english muffin and clotted cream with compote! Are you serious? Wendell's was one of my absolute favorite breakfast spots before COVID. I was so happy to see that they had reopened for carry out but we were unfortunately disappointed with the carry out - the food was packaged in styrofoam without any kind of foil or other insulation. We arrived on time for our pick up and waited as the server helped a few other people with their orders and by the time we got our food it was 100% cold. I know everyone is struggling during the pandemic but I hope that can refine their packaging and pick up process so that the food stays warm. read more

I want to start off by saying, Wendell's used to be one of my favorite breakfast spots in Denver and I still think the food is good, most times. However, I feel the need to write this review, my first one ever - IN HOPES THE OWNER SEES IT- because sadly, I will never ever return. They are incredibly understaffed, and it makes for a terrible dining experience. Our last 3 visits have not been great, but today was the actual worst. Bummer because I brought my parents and sister there for the first time since I've always loved the food. We got there at 10:30, and were not greeted for at least 10 minutes by either of the two servers, who are always running the place on their own. Eventually we got on the waitlist. (There were about 5 tables open btw, but I figured they just needed time to catch up) She said 20-25 min for our table of 5. No biggie, happy to wait! We ended up waiting over an hour, while we watched them seat multiple tables before us that walked in after we did, including an 11 top. I decided to check in on the wait time and she said we'd be seated next, which took another 10-15 min. Then, after we finally got sat, we waited 10 min just for WATER, another 10 for coffee. I bet you can imagine how thirsty we are at this point after waiting for a table for almost an hour and a half. We ordered our food, that took another 40 minutes, and sadly every one of our plates were wrong or missing something. Biggest issue was my scramble had sausage, and I'm a vegetarian, so I had to ask to have it remade. I rarely ever send things back, but obviously could not eat it and risk getting sick. Mistakes happen not a big deal, but damn I'm frustrated, I'm literally starving at the point. They apologize and remake it, but that takes another 20 min. My family has finished their food by the time I got mine. We sat with empty coffees and empty waters, and could not get one of the servers to acknowledge us. Never got the avocado or side of gravy they forgot, still got charged for both. Never got ketchup for hash browns. You could not get anyone's attention to ask again. Another 20 minutes, finally got the check, and I was disappointed they didn't take my meal off, or even the avocado or gravy. Seriously?? I'd say that would have been the very least they could have done to make up for everything. Wow, I'm so annoyed at this point. Just horrible, horrible service. The servers are nice, I honestly feel so bad for them. It's impossible what they have to do on their own- take every table in the restaurant, make all the drinks and handle the bar, run all the food, bus all of the tables. God it's awful to watch, and it RUINS the whole experience because you can't get their attention for anything. Truthfully I shouldn't have left a great tip after all of that but being a server for years, I know it's not their fault. I still tipped 20%. TO THE OWNER - please hire more people to support your staff. The customer service is SO bad and honestly, your food is slowly going down hill too. It's obvious that the main issue is lack of staff. I have to give up on Wendell's after today. It's just not a pleasant experience and leaves me feeling anxious and frustrated every time. read more

I was really, really bummed when DJs closed but when I went to Wendell's yesterday my perspective completely changed. It's so nice inside and on the patio! They did a very classy, modern spin on the interior. The food was fantastic, I got the No.4, my friend ordered the chocolate French toast, and we shared a blueberry danish that was so good. Pancakes were large and fluffy (although at $11 for two, overpriced) , and I love how you can pick between 3 topping choices. We went with the thyme/berry/clotted cream version which was super tasty. Adorable logo, but that's where the positive ends. My friend and I split the $14 egg plate which was super sparse for $14. Like she said we asked for over easy and got sunny-side up (which were not fully cooked, which is why I keep away from sunny-side), tiny portion of potatoes, and toast instead of fry bread (which is why we ordered that option to begin with). Both visits were about 6 weeks apart and the speakers in front were broken so the music was over baring and made the dining experience very unpleasant. Pretty okay breakfast spot. I've been here several times, but likely wouldn't have returned after my first visit if it wasn't the closest breakfast spot to my house. The food is not bad and the location is cute, but their pricing is very inconsistent. Something that is included in the price of my meal on one visit will be an extra charge on the next.
