A new spot we checked and wow it was good. We're a big fan of good breakfast spots and this is one of them. In a decent location with lots of charm, the interior is really nice and modern. The service was great, friendly and on point-making sure we were taken care of, to the point that they had obviously seen us trying to melt the butter on our pancakes and they brought over some room temperature butter. The food was really good, starting off with a light and fluffy pancake to awesome eggs Benedict, a classic bacon and eggs and different take on the good ol breakfast. I'd be back for sure, good job Wendell's. read more

The reviews for this place seem to be all over the board so I wasn't sure what to expect. The verdict? This place is good and worthy of a visit. For starters, the space is great and immaculate. Being the second one in on a Saturday I had no trouble finding a spot and quickly settled in with a steaming cup of coffee. Before I go further: the coffee is excellent. I hate when a place serves a great breakfast but only mediocre (at best) coffee and thankfully that's not the case here. The coffee (from Method roasters) was smooth and perfectly brewed. Thank you thank you thank you. On to breakfast: to start I couldn't pass up the brûléed grapefruit. What a smart and inventive dish. Speaking of smart, they provide a spoon with ridges to cut through the grapefruit. While you have to be careful when eating, this spoon was genius to actually eat a grapefruit without having to struggle sawing through with a regular spoon. The grapefruit was delicious and a great way to start off the day and my meal. My entree selection was the biscuits and gravy. Although I still prefer regular biscuits for this dish, the croissant biscuits were still pretty good. When you got a scoop of everything: the biscuit, gravy, egg, and herb salad, the dish was perfectly balanced and highly enjoyable. read more

Delicious, sophisticated yet simple, warm and welcoming. This is Wendell's. Isaac one of the owners greeted us and shared with us his vision. He wanted to build on the energy from DJ's (former restaurant in this space) with a quality, artisan menu featuring unique twists on classic breakfast and lunch options. They did it! My cappuccino was by all accounts perfect: smooth, rich coffee, not bitter, blended and topped with a protuberant foam that was well-balanced between thick and airy. I also ordered The No. 1 (pictured) and a half-order of the Black & White French Toast. Starting with The No. 1 I got exactly what I imagined. A dense piece of seeded bread laid open with a rich layer of herbed ricotta spread, and topped with generous slices of pickled beets and avocado. I enjoyed biting into it, the gravity of the bread and hearty chunks of beet and avocado reminded me I'm eating real food. I also appreciated the acid mixing with the fat of the ricotta for an added depth of complexity, and it wasn't pungent or overpowering; a very clean finish segueing into my dessert portion of my meal. I'd have taken a picture of the French Toast but the photo wouldn't do it justice. The rich layer of cocoa contrasted with the warm ball of butter and gave the impression of burnt toast... which it wasn't! It was sweet, umami with no bitterness which was a pleasant surprise as I expected something different from the ginger. The bread was also perfectly battered throughout making it dense and moist at the same time. Lastly I want to comment on the restaurant design: it feels so much larger than before with natural light flowing in and around you, and plenty of space between you and your neighbors. I can work in here, I can schmooze in here, and I can get in a morning run and stop in for breakfast in my workout clothes without feeling out-of-place. Maybe my expectations were too high but I was sorely disappointed by Wendell's. The wait isn't too long so I was excited to get seated after a few minutes of waiting. The staff were meh. I just don't feel like they wanted to be there. I got the seeded no 4 which was beets, avocado & ricotta. Okay here's the thing it was $8. Fine. But it was $8 for one slice of toast, a smear of ricotta, half a baby avocado, a whole lot of parsley & im pretty sure a canned beet. A giant canned beet. That was $8. Wtf. That's messed up. The least you can do is give me two slices of bread. The bread was great and the ingredients were good but Jesus the feature of your toasted has a canned item? If it wasn't canned it was weirdly and overly sweet. We also got the biscuits and gravy which was good. It wasn't too heavy. I would eat that again Back to the service. They take your order on a large, awkward hand held device. I get it that you want be electronic but it's giant and in your face. Tasteless. Secondly when you check out they check out in front of you and hand you this device to give the tip. Okay I'm sorry if I'm a weirdo who likes to sit around and talk to whoever I'm with and decide on the top but the waitress is there. STARING YOU IN THE FACE AS YOU GIVE THE TIP & SIGN. lord! Unimpressed. If a friend asks me to come I'd come back with them but I will not willingly come back here. Such a bummer I hope they figure out some of these fixable things. read more

Visited friends in west highlands and found this delicious brunch spot. Very NYC deli/bagel theme with a black & white menu board, NY style bagels, and brick facade. The steak & eggs benny was really savory with a well-seasoned black pepper hollandaise, sautéed mushrooms, chopped kale, and sliced medium steak. Hash browns were plain and could've been seasoned or with onions. Only reason this isn't 5 stars. Staff was cool and nice, and only had a 20 minute wait for 3 at 9:30am on a Sunday when other places nearby had much longer lines outside. read more

How can you not love a place that only serves brunch? Their menu is full of delicious options and I'm definitely going to be coming back to try them all. Service is great and theres plenty of seating inside. Communal and non communal. I got the Steak and Eggs Benedict. Delicious. The poached egg was perfect. The steak was well made. My only issue is that they don't give you a whole lot of steak. The hashbrowns are good but not super flavorful or anything. Mine were a little more burnt then I'd like. Overall a great dish. Tennyson is a cute area to grab food and walk around. If you happen to be there for brunch I definitely reccomend Wendell's. read more

Solid 4.5 which I'm upping to 5. Excellent service and absolutely loved the Wendell's Breakfast Poutine - perfectly cooked eggs over mushroom/sausage gravy on top of a large pile of crispy shoestring potatoes. This meal could easily be shared. A bit pricy at $12 but worth it. If you like your Bloody Mary with lots of flavor, a bit of spice and light on the vodka, you'll love the BM at Wendell's. If you like yours heavy on the alcohol side, ask for more vodka. Service is what really sets Wendell's apart. On both visits we had perfect service - friendly and attentive. I appreciate the fact that even servers who are not assigned to your table pay attention to clearing plates, refilling coffee etc. The staff is very well trained. We have not yet sat inside as on both visits we had perfect weather and opted for a table on the patio, which is very inviting. Aside from the prices being a bit high, I honestly can't think of one bad thing to say about Wendell's. What a great addition to Tennyson Street. read more

I love breakfast food and Wendell's did not disappoint. Came in on a Sunday after church and waited about 20 minutes for a table of 3. They text you when your table is ready so I was able to roam the area while I waited, which was nice. The inside - Hipster diner atmosphere. Although we sat in a booth, I love the idea of the community seating they have. There was also a nice big patio outside that I'd love to check out in the summer. The food - I ordered the No 6 omelet with hash browns and challah. Would have been nice to have jam for the toast, but the rest of the meal was fantastic. The portions were perfect and the food was delicious without being too greasy. Conclusion - I will definitely be back to try some of the other delicious plates we saw being served to other customers. read more

I ordered the pancakes with maple butter, which live up to the title of Denver's best pancakes. While waiting on the food, I met Casey, one of the owners of Wendell's, and had a friendly conversation. She is a delight and is quite passionate about the new venture. New favorite brunch spot in the heart of Tennyson! No wait at 11 on a Saturday. The space is open and clean, and the menu has a great selection of classic diner options that have been modernized to make it an upscale diner experience. I had a delicious and huge breakfast sandwich (love that you can customize bagel, brioche bun or English muffin and your choice of meat) and we split a pecan pancake. That pancake was out of this world - fluffy and sweet and enormous. For $6 it's definitely worth adding on a pancake to share, and I can't wait to come back for the berry pancake! Oh wendell's. I ate here way too often on my visit to Denver. Wendell's is the Bomb. Their breakfast game is strong. I will admit though, I had some annoyances with my server, but I won't let that impact the food. Gotta get their bacon scramble (it is different from an egg scramble with bacon -- must clear that up). It comes with your choice of mixed greens or hash browns and option of toast. I went with hash browns (duh) and they were crispy and delicious. I added a pinch of salt and pepper to them, but the texture was on point. Another day I ordered the Mr. Wendell, which is just a classic breakfast of eggs, toast, choice of side (I did hash browns again...) and meat. I did sausage (links) which came with 3 and were so flavorful! Their toast is also quite delicious and eggs were cooked perfectly (over easy). Weekends can get a little busy, but don't usually have to wait too long for a table if you go at a less brunch-y time. If I'm ever back in Denver I'm going to wendell's! read more

DO NOT RECOMEND. Besides the fact that we found HAIR in our food. The thing that upset us the most was the customer service skills that the staff did NOT have. Yes, it's a busy restaurant, but that does not excuse the lack of courtesy that your staff has. The waitstres was unapologetic, and the item was simply removed from our check and not mention again. Before even finding the Hairs in the food, we asked for more creamer and the waitress said "I'm sorry I don't have enough hands, I'm getting that next." What a fun brunch spot! We tend to frequent the same places but landed on Wendell's after hearing about their legendary pancakes. Sign me up! The front of the building is very unassuming - so keep a close eye out when you get near and start looking for parking. The interior decor has a fun New York deli/diner flare but much warmer and friendlier with a modern spin. They also have a cute patio - I'll make a point to sit there on my next visit. Plenty of tables available on a Friday morning at 930a. I had a very hungry small human with me and our server was very accommodating to put in an order of scrambled eggs before anything else. They came out pretty quickly and all was right in the world again. I ordered a double stack of pancakes with berries and clotted cream and a side of bacon. Everything was divine and the pancakes specifically were a hefty serving, plenty to fill me up, share with the kid and our friends. My friend ordered a pancake kids meal for her son (bacon, fries and fruit too, perfect!) and a Classic breakfast for herself, complete with a homemade English muffin. Yummmm! We also each tried one of their lattes - she got vanilla (sweet and tasty) and I got mocha (not overly sweet but so good). We all had a nice time until the very end when the kids had enough and it took a little bit for our server to pickup then return our credit cards. But overall really really nice. My family and I stopped in for brunch a few weekends ago because I had convinced them that this place had incredible food. In the past, this place wildly amazed me with its food. (I've been in maybe 2 other times) However, this time the food was subpar. The hash browns were really undercooked. The food was lukewarm at best. But the thing that really pissed us off was that my husband got the biscuits and gravy and when it came it had basically a drizzling of gravy. Enough, possibly, for a toddler to eat. He asked for an extra side of gravy since his biscuits weren't even covered and they brought him what looked like a 2oz bowl of gravy..not much. Fine, all good. But then we get the check and they added on an extra $3 for the gravy. We asked the manager to take off the cost of the extra gravy since we assumed that when the menu states "Biscuits and Gravy. Nuff said!" that we would get smothered B&G..duh. She informed us that the B&G come with 3oz of gravy but that "this time" she'll make an exception and take off the $3 charge for our already $16 dish. Needless to say, i suggest they change the name to biscuits and gravy drizzle or actually make biscuits and gravy the proper way. This is just a skimpy way to operate. This was my first time at Wendells and definitely don't be my last. It took me maybe 12 seconds to lock eyes with Breakfast Poutine on the menu and I knew what I wanted. However, while glancing the rest of the menu looked great. Good interior but not an abundance of seating. We got there around 9:45 on a Sunday morning for a party of 3 and we had about a 20-minute wait. The food was delicious, it's hard to beat fries, cheese curds, gravy and eggs. I really love this neighborhood spot but it definitely fell short this time around. It seemed obvious that they were understaffed. Food was sub par from my past visits. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and at first glance when my food was delivered, I thought they accident brought me an eggs Benedict. Turns out it was biscuit and gravy. The biscuit was more like a very soft English muffin, thin, no density, and no texture. The gravy has very little sausage. The cinnamon roll was great! I love their outdoor patio, and love that it's dog friendly! Maybe it was just a bad day, and understaffed- overall disappointed, it's not the same Wendell's I remember. read more

This place is going to be a pass for me. Came here for brunch with 6 other people this last sunday and it wasn't a pleasant experience. As we sat down the table next to us said " i hope you have no plans today , this will take a very long time and the food isn't good ". we didn't worry because the restaurant was clearing out. We had to ask for a server to get coffee / water after maybe 10 mins of waiting. Food took over an hour. i had avocado toast and it was a complete joke. Service was nice but i wish they had been more clear with us. We heard rumors that there was one cook and they weren't ready for the post covid open CO rush. Went to Wendell's for brunch and when we entered there were numerous open tables but still we waited 45 min for the under staffed restaurant. No problem, we thought, since we are all getting back from covid and table spacing is still throughout Denver, we will give them the benefit of the doubt. We then waited for 15-20 min for our waitress to bring us water/ask for a drink order. Things were getting worse but we placed the order of mimosas to lighten the blow of the wait.... the $7 mimosa was barely covering the bottom of the glass and was enough to last a few sips. Thinking this could have been a mistake, I ask for another glass with more beverage this time, as most mimosas have a full glass of orange juice and cheap champagne. The order came back with the same, maybe less, of the sweet Sunday funday juice. $28 later and the two of us had about 8 total ounces of mimosa and our food arrived. The pancake was supposed to be cinnamon apple and Carmel but was just a normal pancake with an eighth of a sliced apple on top with hard butter to boot... not great. The breakfast sandwich was probably prepared a day before but the Benedict was well prepared at least. You may have the cook running food out which is always fun to redirect other patrons orders to different tables and guess who ordered what! Overall, over priced for little amounts of "ok" food that I could have made at home. read more

My boyfriend, his mother, and I were visiting Denver from Texas and decided to eat at Wendell's. The owner greeted us and was so so kind and you could tell she and her husband really have a passion for hospitality and restaurants. They care for their guests greatly. The coffee was delicious! The mugs were also super cute, I wish they were for sale, it would have been a great souvenir from our trip. We ordered the Wendell's Junior, the steak and egg Benedict, and two pancakes. If you're craving "unbelievably delicious" buttermilk pancakes, then Wendell's is the first spot that should be on your list. They offer an amazing, enormous buttermilk pancake that must have magic sprinkled in the batter, as it's impossible to stop eating. Also on the menu is a pancake of the week, where Wendell's makes sure to serve up outrageous pancake flavors, one week at a time. I've visited this place no fewer than 4 times in the month since discovering it, and have made it my go-to breakfast spot in the Highlands/Berkeley area. Highly recommend! read more

Waited about 30 minutes for a table; when something freed up, we were sat at the counter. The people at the counter were pretty helpful and friendly. However, after such a long wait, the food seemed like it should be great! It was less than great. Ordered french toast and it came out with two pieces of cooked bread and a heap of butter. I realized that they had misheard my order, waited for a pecan "set-up" to come out, but by the time that was ready, the french toast was cold. I wouldn't recommend it.
