Might be weird to say this about a restaurant but I felt extremely welcomed when walking in this place, felt great. The food was delicious, the pancakes were nice and fluffy, sweet and the perfect size. We're visiting from Nashville and stumbled upon this place and had the most delicious breakfast! First of all the service was amazing! The gentleman who took our order and served our food was wonderful. He even brought a pitcher of ice coffee since four of us had ordered individual glasses. I needed a quick bite in the Cap Hill area, and this place was the closest diner in the area, so I popped in on a whim. It being a Friday morning, the place wasn't too busy and I was greeted with friendly staff and a cozy cottage-core atmosphere. There's just something about listening to classical music with a cup of joe while overlooking Park Ave surrounded by plastic flowers. I don't mean this in a snide way, this place has history and it's not afraid to show it. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. While a lot of diners tend to serve intimating portions, I was presented with a modest biscuit, egg, and about a half cup of gravy. For me this is the perfect portion. The gravy was well-balanced and the biscuit, while not anything amazing, were light, and stood out in the dish. The food knew was it was about and didn't need to impress anybody. For $13 plus tip, this place is a great deal. I'll have to bring some friends here for a good, affordable, and cozy breakfast. This is a gem in Capitol Hill where you can tell the food is made with love. Great selection of breakfast and lunch. They have amazing soups made daily (I like the winter squash) and their restaurant has an outdoor seating area that's great for warm weather. Their french toast with fresh berries is always delicious and not too heavy on the syrup. I'm also a fan of their biscuits and gravy. For lunch, I always go to their meatball sandwich which is light and satisfying. If you like Mexican breakfast, their quesadillas and burritos are also mouth-watering and have big proportions that will not disappoint. The owner is so nice and always takes time to get to know his customers and provide good service. The only complaint I have is that their hours are limited so they close at 2pm or 3pm most days, and sometimes they close for more than a week around the holidays. read more

I met a friend at the airport and we hung out in Downtown Denver for the weekend. We chose Spices because it was one of the few spots that seemed to have more of a full menu instead of just coffee and pastries. We Ubered there from our hotel around 11am. The spot is much tinier than expected and we were lucky to get a table. I ordered and almond milk latte which was amazing, a surprise. The foam was delicate and the espresso smooth. One packet of stevia (I carry my own) and it was perfection. Highlights from our three meals: the bacon was that perfect thick, a little crispy, a little chewy. I enjoyed my veggie omelet and I usually leave the hash browns but these were fantastic - obviously thinly shredded in house and not over fried in butter. They were delicate and sprinkled with parsley. Other great things - the French toast was fantastic, cooked with what seemed a thick multigrain bread. Someone ordered a croissant and we all shared it - it was warm, buttery and crispy and was fantastic with my latte. Overall very pleased with this spot. We left very full and walked back to the 16th street mall for some shopping. read more

This place is a hidden gem. It's squeezed into the same apparently endless building that houses Streets of London, 3 Guys Pies, and Scooter Liquors, but on the Humboldt side. The hours are early, so maybe you've walked by later to find them closed and didn't give it a second thought. This is a mistake. The menu isn't large, but everything I've tried has been well-prepared, and the servings are large for what you pay. Also, the hash browns are fresh, which I've found to be a rarity. The patio is really pleasant on a nice day as is the ambiance, which is enhanced by the classical music that usually plays here. Service is partial - you order at the counter inside and your food is delivered to you. It's a method that seems to work well for this place as I've never had to wait terribly long. The next time you are at your favorite breakfast spot and the line is out the door, come to spices instead. It's a great little spot. read more

Spices Cafe was the culinary highlight of our entire trip. My group of three came to Spices Cafe for breakfast on an early Sunday morning. Although the reviews warned of long wait times, the cafe was practically empty when we arrived (around 8AM). The early bird gets the worm after all! Menus are situated on a stand by the front door, so we grabbed a few and helped ourselves to table on the quiet European style patio. Shortly thereafter a server dropped off some water and instructed us to order our meals at the register inside. BREAKFAST CROISSANT SANDWICH ($5.25): Everyone ordered this. By itself, the sandwich is vegetarian. My husband and brother-in-law got it with a sausage patty for an extra $1.75. The main ingredients are egg and cheese topped off by lettuce and tomato in a warm flaky croissant bun. The artichoke parmesan cream tied everything in together. I was plenty full by the time I finished this sandwich, but I'd recommend getting a side of fresh fruit or fluffy hashbrowns ($2.25) like my dining counterparts did. 4/5 Spices Cafe is serving up awesome food at reasonable prices in a cute cafe. A great homey café for brunch! This cafe is a small gem on colfax. Feels like a small pop's café with friendly local staff. Don't be tricked by their cost-effective menu! Not only is their food tasty, they also have generous portions. There's limited seating inside. I personally recommend sitting outside during warmer months. This little restaurant behind Streets of London is very unassuming and makes good food just as you'd expect. I had a Philly Cheesesteak that most likely isn't considered "authentic" - no Cheese Whiz here, but it was just the right size for eating the whole thing and not feeling extremely fatty afterward. The man working there when Gabi and I stopped in for a quick lunch was as nice as could be. He whipped up our food for us quickly and even cleared our plates when we were done, even though this is more like a deli and less like a restaurant judging by the feel of the atmosphere. Hmmm... let me just say that my french toast was delicious...but the experience not so much. So first of all we asked the cashier if there was a table outside and she said yes, but while we looked at the menu the Manager gave it away to a couple who came after us. Ok fine, so they later gave us another table outside which was awkwardly located in the middle of the sidewalk, it felt weird so we asked the waitress if we could move to another table outside (a four seater), she asked Michael the manager, but apparently HE SAID THOSE ARE ONLY FOR BIGGER GROUPS...so we ended up moving inside. It took about 40 MINS TO GET OUR FOOD... I ordered The "1510" ($6.50): FRENCH TOAST with eggs and sausage, the french toast was delicious, it was perfect and different from most I've tasted. Then my friend ordered the omelet and hash which was also good. We also ordered a latte which took about 20 minutes and tasted mediocre along with the house coffee. At this point we were just happy our food was good because I was so ready to leave...oh wait but we couldn't because YOU HAVE TO PAY BEFORE YOU GET YOUR FOOD. ...And then when we finally left we noticed the 4 seater table we had previously requested was still open...that really upset me because we could've totally sat there. I just felt like they weren't accommodating at all (and totally not the waitress's fault, she was supper nice and just doing what the manager was telling her to do). This place is interesting because although the inside and the service (one guy-always the same nice/shy guy) are a little on the funky side, he always got the job done. I have been several times and it was always the same. Decent portions, fresh enough, well prepared diner-style offerings at a reasonable price. Totally edible without repercussions kind of place. Some mysterious person must have snuck in from another planet and told them they have to change things....in a huge way...perhaps they should try imitation food...NO one will notice! Seriously, that's how drastically different it was. Not cool Spices. You've got a great rating but if you keep serving this stuff, your customers will go out the door like I have and most likely not return. I have had the veggie omelette here several times in the past year and it was always the same, nice sized portion, fluffy with plenty of fresh veggies folded inside. What I received recently was not only about a third of the usual size, but a shriveled, sad, egg rolled "thing" with 3 barely recognizable mushroom halves on top and loaded with rubbery cheese...no other veggies to speak of. Horrible at best. No I didn't finish it, I didn't want to spend my afternoon in the bathroom. If that wasn't bad enough, the once normal diner-style crispy hash browns were replaced by very finely shredded plastic-y tasting strips-wth?? We all know that plastic has...NO flavor and is a digestive nightmare. It was a gross meal. I shoulda sent it back but who sends food back at a diner with one shy guy working?! Not me. I ate some of it, paid for it ($10 with tip-drank water) and now I get to Yelp about it. My un-suspecting from out of town friend ordered the Italian sandwich and although she is easy to please and loves almost every kind of food, she couldn't finish this oddity-on-a-plate. Her comments were "the bread tastes fake", the meat was really "weird" and overall it was "just not tasty at all". Come on Spices...what happened to the flavor and the real ingredients?! This is how you kill a restaurant. Please stop cutting corners and serving sub-par food. Get back to your old self-please, your fans near and far are counting on you. read more

I really enjoyed this place! We made our way to Spices yesterday after reading the reviews, looking for something new to try for lunch. It's a cute little place and the staff were so friendly. I tried the tuna salad croissant and the hubby tried the grilled chicken & portobelo mushroom sandwich. Both came with a side, which we both picked the french fries. My croissant was delicious! I've never had a tuna salad on a croissant before and the combination of the tuna (with diced up apples inside) and croissant was real pleasant! The french fries were real good too! I had a few bites of the "sandwich" left at the end and couldn't finish because I am the worlds slowest eater and it got too soggy. My own fault there! But it was a great meal for sure. And the hubs really enjoyed his chicken sandwich as well! I definitely recommend this place and look forward to going back soon and trying something else on the menu!! read more

I'm ashamed to say that I walked into Spices yesterday, saw that it was completely empty, and almost walked back out again. I'm so glad I didn't. The French Toast with Fresh Berries was phenomenal. (See photo for evidence.) The bread was soft and yielding to the bite, the strawberries and blueberries were actually fresh, the powdered sugar was beautiful and leant an extra note of complex sweetness to the dish; I really couldn't have asked for more. Except I did. In the form of an overeasy egg on rye toast on the side. That egg was absolutely perfect - the slightest touch of my fork and the thin skin released rivulets of fresh, bright yellow hot egg yolk onto my perfectly crispy toast. When my order arrived at my seat everything was the perfect temperature. I even got my own water jug, which I appreciated because being in Denver always makes me feel like all the water is being leached out of my body faster than I can replace it. The service left a bit to be desired, but after tasting the food I didn't mind the slight surliness. The prices are great here too, especially considering what you'd pay for equivalent quality in DC. This was my first meal in the Mile High City on this Denver trip and I have a feeling it'll become part of the regular rotation on subsequent trips. read more

What an interesting place! This little brunch spot is tucked away across the street from Voodoo Donuts and is a great place to grab a casual meal on a lazy day. We came in not quite knowing what to expect, and were a little startled that we order at the counter first. But despite the order ahead system, the service was wonderful and our was food brought out to us when it was ready. I ordered the sourdough French toast with berries and a latte. The toast was really unique and delicious and came in a HUGE portion. The berries were fresh and unadorned, which made me feel less bad as I happily devoured half a loaf of bread's worth of the toast. My only complaint is the price markup for getting berries versus no berries...an extra $3 for a sprinkle of fruit seems excessive. The latte was better than I expected since they actually make the espresso and steam the milk rather than relying on a latte machine. The Croissant Breakfast Sandwich was generously portioned with several eggs, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a cream cheese spread. Very tasty. The vibe of the restaurant was very relaxing, with classical music playing from the local npr classical affiliate. I was able to stick around and work while I waited for my next appointment. The most amazing breakfast (you'll notice that I tend to be more brunch heavy in my eating out) - the hash browns are thinly shredded and makes me feel like I'm at cafe in Paris.
