I am in town on business and was looking for a reasonably priced local breakfast/brunch joint. Was very pleased with Spices Cafe. The Croissant Breakfast Sandwich was generously portioned with several eggs, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a cream cheese spread. Very tasty. The vibe of the restaurant was very relaxing, with classical music playing from the local npr classical affiliate. I was able to stick around and work while I waited for my next appointment. Cozy and quaint little breakfast cafe with great service and friendly faces. Growing up with a neighborhood diner I've always appreciated the simplicity in breakfast. Went to Spices yesterday as the other place we were going to go to had a very long line. Luckily, there was no line at Spices and we got to place our order right away. At Spices, you order at the counter and your food is brought to your table. I ordered the breakfast burrito and an iced coffee from a very friendly man at the front counter. It was a decent price too for such a large meal (about $9.50 or something). The burrito was spicy and tasted very good-- it was a big portion so I brought some home. Other food on the menu looks great too! A few omelettes, breakfast quesadilla, sweet breakfast items, and lunch items are on the menu. The special was duck crepes... Which sounded quite enticing, but I wasn't ready to dive into duck that early in the day :) The food was served quickly and was hot when brought to our table. The staff was friendly, as well. Nestled right off the main strip, I immediately got the sense of "mom and pop" when I stopped in. The decor, condiments and spices and what not on the tables and at the bar top, etc. all added to the "small town, mom and pop" shop type of feeling. We came in for brunch and were the only ones inside at first. I ordered a veggie omelette with pancakes. The portions were large (especially for the price point) and it was a great meal. Don't expect anything fancy here, as it's your staple brunch/breakfast foods....all of which were delicious and reasonably priced. Well, the home-y feel when I walked in was super comforting, the customer service from the young lady was top-notch and has set the bar, the chef was super nice and on point with his cooking skills. Definitely a hidden gem! We went in on a week day so it was a little slower, but the staff was friendly & took care of my group & our orders quickly. This place had an extremely creepy vibe. It was eerily quiet and choral music was blasting when we arrived, the place was very cold and sterile. The waiter never smiled and I had the feeling as if I was intruding in someone's home by being a customer there. When I mustered up the courage to ask for more coffee- which I had to do as it wasn't offered the waiter looked murderous but he did begrudgingly oblige. It felt like I was eating in a church basement with a repressed and angry staff that has been forced to make and serve food to the community as penance. The food itself was pretty mediocre. The French toast was soggy and the eggs were too runny. I will never go here again and would not recommend this place to anyone I'm still feeling the bad vibes as I write this review! read more

All of the American dishes are great, particularly the meatloaf sandwich, patty melt, Reuben and salads. Breakfast is served all day. Try the breakfast burrito with bacon! It's great! The owner's name is Michael and he mans the counter most of the time (when he's not out on a catering job in town). We found the restaurant from a Google Search. It had a high rating and seemed quaint. I ordered the smothered burrito with sausage. It was really good but I expected the sausage to be loose rather than cut up links. Hell, it was still very good with an excellent balance of other ingredients. I ordered a side of bacon and and a fruit cup. Both were great. Perfect bacon. The coffee was really good. My girlfriend said it was better than the stuff I make--oof. We visited on May 1. Ordered chicken fried steak breakfast and the breakfast quesadilla. Tl;dr: GROSS. Chicken fried steak was just nasty. Weird flavor, perhaps due to the large amounts of green herbs they used as seasoning. It was overly greasy. I took one bite and pushed it all aside. I ate the pancakes that came with the chicken fried steak-- they were edible, but over mixed, which causes a tough and rubbery texture. The quesadilla was so greasy that it turned my stomach. All the food was borderline cold, and I feared food poisoning if I ate it. My cast iron stomached hubby ate and took the leftovers home. Rejoice, Colfaxers! Your late(ish) night sandwich options no longer stop at just Fat Jacks or Silver Mine! Try Spices Cafe, a little gem tucked in behind Streets of London and Scooter's Liquors. Now open until at least 11 pm, Spices provides a much needed alternative to those other two. No boring sub-style sammies here, Spices offers up the goods. All the items on their menu-- including breakfast options-- are served right up until closing (or until they run out). Some of the prices might seem a little high at first glance ($7.95 for a grilled veggie sandwich)... but read a little further and you'll notice that they come with your choice of side! And we're not talking a bag of chips, either. You can choose fries (a huge portion of shoestrings that are seasoned just-right and cooked just-perfect), onion rings (batter-dipped, not breaded, and SO good), or slaw (didn't try it... I generally hate slaw). So it's actually quite a deal. An even better deal? A burger with the same side-order options for $5.50. My husband said it was one of the better burgers he'd ever had. And he's had many... I ordered the aforementioned Grilled Veggie Sandwich. It was good, albeit served "club style," with an extra slice of bread in the middle. Kind of my pet peeve (see my review of Sputnik), but I let it slide. The delicious fries more than made up for that renegade slice of 7-grain. Extra bonus: you can order select items from Streets of London's menu at Spices too! Sure, you'll miss out on Streets' killer jukebox and boisterous ambiance... but sometimes you'd just rather sit quietly and enjoy your curry fries amidst spice racks and prints of little babies sitting in spaghetti pots. This is a great little no fuss breakfast/lunch spot. My favorites are the french toast which is a lot of food for the price and oh so tasty. I also love the turkey avocado sandwich, but I have also had the veggie burger and it is way better than most. They have a lot of options and specials everyday. Plus for you veggies they have veggie items but will also rework menu items for you. Good times! The friendly gal (Salina) who works behind the counter is also quite a talented baker. She is responsible for all the tasty treats such as cakes, creme brulee, cookies, and cupcakes. Be sure to get some dessert...your mouth will thank me! =] read more

Many of the 'popular' breakfast places I've been in Denver have been the same story: queue up, get small portions and pay through the nose for vegan/veggie/yuppie uselessness that leaves you and your wallet feeling empty. Spices is exactly none of these things. Apparently not ordinarily excessively busy, you sit down where you'd like and pay what I conceive to be less money than it'd cost me to cook my own eggs in the morning. The food is pretty basic/elemental, but expertly experimental in its own right. He's obviously always trying different things, and the cafe is the exhibition of what's worked out - brilliantly. What a cool little spot! I had friends who referred to it as "No Name Restaurant Behind Streets" until we realized it was called "Spices Cafe." The boyfriend and I stopped in for a little breakfast, not feeling the whole "lets drink and eat brunch" thing but more like "lets grab some quick breakfast." I'm glad we came here. It's a short walk from home and not too busy. The menu is nothing out of the ordinary....your typical breakfast fare as well as sandwiches, soup, and salads for lunchtime. I got the croissant breakfast sandwich...this thing is HUGE for $4. It's like eating a cheese omelette between bread. I also ordered coffee and was given a whole pot. I can put down a lot of coffee if you let me, and was glad to be given the opportunity. I also ate some of the boyfriend's toast. I liked it...it was really crispy and they use good bread. I probably didn't need toast in addition to my omelette sandwich, but you know. It's the weekend. And I wanted something I could put jam on. New to Denver, my girlfriend and I originally wanted to try brunch at Snooze; that plan was thrown out the window as soon as we saw the line. Not one to be deterred, I pulled out my blackberry and quickly yelped something close by. Spices came up and we headed on over for unknown deliciousness. I will admit, when we pulled up to the place we were a little trepidatious. It's not much to look at from the outside... or from the inside for that matter. Not that its horrible, its just not fancy. Definitely had a diner feel to it. At any rate, we both ordered the breakfast sandwich on a croissant, thinking "this will be safe and easy for them to make." Well friends, let me tell you - this was no ordinary breakfast sandwich. They used wicked fresh ingredients (homegrown tomatoes? Yes please!) and the artichoke spread on the croissant? TO DIE FOR. EXCELLENT tasty surprise! This small cafe is tucked away off the main street. Here, you order before sitting. The order taker seemed gruff at first, but in fact said thank you and acknowledged each request I made. In the end, I think I mistook his concern and attention to detail as abrupt. He happily accommodated my request to substitute an ingredient. After ordering, I recommend sitting at the counter windows with a nice, wide sunny view. I had the Denver omelette, which came with hash browns & 2 pancake. I like flavorful food, and everything was well spiced: tasty and not overwhelming. The omelette was stuffed to the gills with ham, no skimping here!! :) The pancakes were out of this world! So fluffy, tasty and perfectly golden. The fresh strawberry was a delicious addition that was not left untouched! Despite ordering at the counter, the cashier-cum-waiter came out to check on me twice during the meal. He brought water and hot sauce on request. There was a wide array of condiments already available at the counter, too. I enjoyed the sparkling water that was available for purchase. We were visiting Denver the week of October 7th,2011. My wife and I love to have a nice sit down breakfast and used Yelp to help us find a good breakfast spot while in town. We stayed downtown and were looking for some place close. The first place we went was packed, loud and had a very long wait so we left. We found Spices Cafe on Yelp and called and asked how long the wait was. We were told that there was no wait (Sat around 11am). We drove to Spices and we were very glad we did. It is a small little cafe with one waiter, who I think is either the owner or cook. The food and the service was GREAT! I actually felt that they should have charged more. We paid $17.00 for an order of french toast , a huge breakfast burrito and two coffees. Maybe I am just used to being ripped off, because I am from Vegas, but I thought the prices were very reasonable. We actually went back on Sunday and on Monday before we went to the airport for our return flight home. We also ordered the same thing, all three days. Get the French Toast and the breakfast burrito. Shhhhh! I almost don't want to write a review about this place because it seems like a hidden gem. Tucked away between Colfax and 16th on Humboldt you'd have to want to find this place. It's not the kind of place you stumble into, or at least I wouldn't. That being said, I stopped in for breakfast one Sunday morning and was presently surprised with the food, the ambiance and the service. The food was phenomenal, I had french toast with fresh berries. Everything was fresh and tasted great. The ambiance was nice and reminded me of a beach side cafe ... minus the beach. I did also enjoy the patio and dog friendly environment. They were playing classical music, which was nice. Nothing is worse than getting top 40 pushed into your ears first thing in the morning. I appreciated the taste in music, very much! This is my new favorite breakfast place in all of Denver. My boyfriend and I had an amazing meal here the other morning, and I can't wait to go back. The owner/chef, Michael, seems to run most of the show. He is very kind and humble about his restaurant. Although the atmosphere is cozy and clean, I will be back for the food. I had the Croissant sandwich for $3.95. The Croissant was fresh and the Artichoke Parmesan spread was subtle and tasty! My boyfriend had the 1515 which included French Toast, two eggs any style, and choice of meat...all for $5.50! I don't even like French Toast and I kept stealing bites of his....excellent! We also shared a side of their Green Chili sauce...YUM! The coffee is tasty and refilled often. I can't really say anything bad about this place. I ate there at least 5 times, mostly breakfast, or before 1PM, and every time I had to wait for long time to eat or at least get the coffee... Last time I went there(last week) I had to wait 30 minutes to get the coffee... (I put the timer after I ordered), I knew they are slow but that's ridiculous, they had only 3 orders to prepare, and coffee is already made right... The food is OK and cheap, nothing wow! I can't imagine how they handle it when are very busy. I've only hit them up for with a friend, so I cannot speak to their lunch stuff (didn't seem super veg friendly), but their morning meals were delish. I got a short stack of pancakes, which were fluffy and delicious, and a side of hashbrowns, which were well cooked and actually had some seasoning and herbs in them, making them much tastier than any hashbrowns I've had before. They are good; neither bad nor out of this world, but I think it's a nice place for a quick bite, and I appreciate their tea selection (and it being loose tea, rather than pre-bagged). Also, to note; they have gender neutral bathrooms, which gains them a whole extra star. Side note: Deep fried snickers bar? WTF?
