Half-diner half typical-Denver-overpriced-mediocre-hipster breakfast joint. Their menu claims they have the best pancakes in Denver. They're not even top 10. Giant + covered in copious amount of sugar and/or buttery syrups does not = best in town. That's the kind of stuff Snooze pulls on tourists downtown to come across as "amazing." Also, the brunette waitress with the black-framed glasses bumped HARD into my bar stool while walking by (even though there was like four feet of space behind me) and did nothing to apologize for literally almost knocking me onto the floor. Zero spatial awareness or common courtesy. I've been a few times and I'm just not a fan of this place. Some of the servers are nice, but overall it has a bit of that modern pretentious, self-important vibe to it. We put our names in at 10 am. I understand that it was a Sunday, but we waited for two hours before we were even acknowledged. We have been sitting at our table for an hour and no one has offered us a thing. Not even water. They seem to be extremely under staffed (I have only seen one person taking orders/working the bar) and mismanaged. As a restaurant on Tennyson, they don't have to address these issues because there will always be business. Just be wary of the poor service before you come here. Updated review because decided to go back. The food is very good and the service the day I went was great. Leaving 3 stars because I still had a terrible experience here. The manager recognized me this time and comped me $6 off my ticket which was nice for making up for my bad experience. I'd go back just not sure I'd go on a weekend Review based on experience. Here are the good things: The decor is pleasant, our server was nice, the owner (manager?) was accommodating, and the breakfast sausage was tasty. Here are the bad things: We didn't know DJ's had closed when we chose to go out to eat breakfast for my husband's birthday. Since we had already driven there we decided to give Wendell's a try. We were very disappointed. My kids each ordered the pancake and complained that it tasted like burnt grease. It was also a bummer that there were no combo meals and we had to order sausage/bacon on the side. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and egg and that tasted like cardboard. There was just no seasoning. He only ate a small portion and then shoved it aside. The server must have let the owner know because he came over to us with some weird excuse about the panko and ended up not charging us for it. I ordered the brandy vanilla waffle which was small and tasted like neither of those things, only wheat. The fruit compote the server recommended tasted sour and didn't really complement the meal at all. I really wanted maple syrup but they upcharge $2 for that which is absolutely ridiculous. I like Wendell's enough to keep coming back on a regular basis, and the servers are welcoming. I rounded up to 4 stars but think it is a bit over-priced. I like the Classic Eggs Benedict ... Although the seasoned potatoes are not to my liking, they are ok with ketchup or can be substituted with a beautiful serving of fresh fruit. I've been telling everyone I know about how much I love Wendell's since the first (of many) time I went in at the beginning of the year. I went in today to order what I always do: the brûléed grapefruit, 1/2 avocado (with farmers cheese, balsamic drizzle and sprinkled with seeds) starter with a 1/2 bagel. To my great dismay, they no longer have the 1/2 avocado and can't order it. Such a bummer since it was specifically unique to Wendell's. Every person I brought there (about 10-12 people) not including the countless people I've sent there have always really enjoyed this dish. I don't know why they took such a great item off their already stellar menu, but I doubt I'll go back unless it's added back. RIP read more

We really enjoyed Wendell's. It is a small, quaint place with a very relaxing atmosphere. The staff were very attentive and we were seated right away on a Sunday morning. By the time we left, there was a line out the door. The French Toast and eggs were excellent as were the Scrambles and pancakes. Our waitress Laura was very efficient and pleasant. I certainly hope they are able to weather the storm with the Corona virus shutdowns. I have been telling people how much we enjoyed it and want to go back. read more

I went to Wendell's with a friend a couple months back and they got my order wrong. I was so hungry that I ate it. They comped the order as they should. One Mistake, no big deal... food was decent so I went back with two friends this past Friday. 1) restaurant was nearly full, I waited for a table to be wiped and asked the server behind the bar for coffee while I waited... she snapped at me and said it would be a couple of minutes because she was busy. 2) same server takes out order and the order disappears from their computer and she has to retake it, by this time restaurant is almost empty 3) order comes out wrong and server catches food runner before they bring to table. They remake the one meal, and the other two meals sat and got cold 4) my meal, cold and also the scramble was once again not correct. 5) when it finally came out correct, (the other gal w cold food was in a hurry and ate it anyway) it was not palatable. 6) we were given a plethora of excuses of why it was all messed up... they comped the entrees only. My friend and I tried to eat here for a casual breakfast this past weekend. We were told to wait for our seats while the bartender/server cleared off his bar. We waited for about 15 minutes and then were told to have a seat at the bar where there were still half-eaten meals and drinks from the previous people sitting there. We then waited another 10-15 minutes before the bartender/server asked us for our drink order while turning his back to us, walking the other way, and not writing our order down - so we were unsure if we had actually ordered. We ended up leaving the restaurant about 10 minutes after that, before getting our drinks or ordering food, due to the fact that the same bartender/server was now yelling at the rest of the wait staff in front of us. The restaurant seemed understaffed for a Saturday morning, but the place wasn't packed and the other servers seemed to be hustling but getting by just fine, but you could tell the bartender/server was making the rest of the wait staff uncomfortable and tense. The food here is pretty good, but I am hesitant to go back in fear of the angry bartender/server. read more

This place is one of our favorites so we were bummed when it closed for several months earlier in the year, but now they reopened under new ownership and I'm happy to report that it's still very much the same Wendell's. Staff was great and accommodating. Eggs, hash, bacon, all good. I got the French toast, and I was not impressed. Slight burnt taste on one side, yet bread was still soft; not sure what was going on there. Points for trying something different with this meal, but I think you can do better! We'll be back to try other things in the near future as our neighbors meals looked tasty. We waited for 55 minutes (party of 4 at noon on a weekend) and I ordered a single pancake. It was served RAW. They told me "oops" and said a new one would take 20 mins. I loved this place! Food was all super awesome and fresh. They seem to put care into details. One and only issue was our waitress seemed like this was her first gig. I wanted chicken on a salad that didn't automatically come with it and had to explain to her how to make that happen. She also totally forgot a few things that are crucial at brunch. Ick. We go to a number of great places in the area but were very disappointed. We ordered the waffle, chicken fried steak, and a Bloody Mary. The waffle was tiny, flat, and moist (not in a good way)... for $11 it was ridiculous. The chicken fried steak was small with some congealed topping. The bloody Mary was extremely small. After waiting for a seat we were served water and drinks within a reasonable amount of time but then waited 30 minutes for our food. Wow normally the first few days of a restaurant opening is a bit chaotic as they work out the kinks but Wendell's was rocking it this morning on their second day! The space was formally DJ Berkeley and they completely transformed the space into a bright, inviting space reminiscent of old school diners. They have exposed brick, comfy booths and a beautiful mural of what 38th and Tennyson looked like in the 1900s with a Denver streetcar. They also have a cute patio space for outdoor eating. Now on to the food! We ordered the breakfast poutine and the breakfast sandwich. The poutine had a really tasty gravy and I liked the use of shoestring fries. The breakfast sandwich was bacon, eggs, cheese on a brioche bun with hash browns and it was solid. My favorite part might be the $2 coffee! So hard to find coffee under $3 anywhere these days so this was a great surprise. The pricing is in line with other breakfast joints, larger entrees are $10-15, but there are smaller options for under $10 and a kid's menu. Open from 7-2 for breakfast/lunch and 3 pm on the weekends. The manager Isaac stopped by to say hi and welcome us and our server was amazing. I ordered a latte and the waitress says... "it might be a little cold, just let me know and I will bring a hot one". What?! I mean... Hwwwwaaaat?! Not a good start. I was sitting in the very location where I've had the best chicken fried steak ever, when it was DJ Berkeley. So I figured I would order it and see if it was comparable. It was not. It was more shake and back style. And the "hash was cold. It had no flavor. I'm sure we will try it again just to be sure, might have been an off day. Looks nice though, but I don't care about that. This was my first visit to Wendell's which took over the DJ's on Berkeley space on Tennyson. I came in at mid-morning, around 10am and only a few tables had people at them. I'd have loved to have been able to award five stars (as I would have with DJs), but several things fell short for me. The first indication there might be some issues ahead came with the coffee, which was lower-case 'w' warm. It was ok enough, but a large cup of warm coffee would become a 2/3 cup of cold coffee if it wasn't consumed right away. I thought things would improve on a refill, so I gulped most of it down only to get another 'warm' cup. Breakfast entrees are on the upper end of the scale, which is all right if what you get merits a price of 11-15 dollars. And the breakfast I had (the #8 scramble) was capital-G Good, though bacon in the scramble was tough and chewey. The breakfast came with several bread options. I chose brioche. When it came to the table I looked around for butter or some kind of jam or jelly to go on it. Imagine my surprise when I learned that if I actually wanted something like that, butter was free but jam would cost an extra $1.00. Not a big deal but I have to say it was the first time I saw this in any restaurant in my lifetime. Looks chintzy, especially with the more pricey entrees. When the check came, the bill was presented to me on an e-device and I gave the waitperson a 20% tip since the service of the not so top notch food was certainly adequate. BUT . . . I was surprised to see when I got the paper receipt, that my tip encompassed 20% of the tax as well as the food I had purchased. At no point in the meal did I see anyone from the State of Colorado seeing to my comfort and pleasure, so this was just an extra amount on top of what I had purchased and was served. To be fair, I don't know if this is routine at all places, but if it is, I think it's kind of deceptive, and at the end of any year probably results in several thousands of dollars paid to the restaurant or its servers. With some simple adjustments (mentioned above) Wendell's could easily be a five star place, but on this morning it definitely was not. read more

If you are looking for a delightful brunch experience check this place out. Recently opened right on Tennyson in the Berkeley neighborhood, my bff and I came here on a Friday morning and were instantly in love. The space is a mix of seating, including a bar, booths, half booths, and a community table. It really makes good use of the space. They also have a totally adorable patio. Our server Caroline really made the experience over the top. She was super friendly, helpful, and on point. My friend opted for the poutine. This dish works due to its use of shoestring potatoes keeping them crispy despite the gravy. They use sausage gravy on it, which was good, however I think this dish would be next level with a really good flavorful pork green chili. The addition of avocado and over easy eggs on top made this dish so so good. My friend loved it. I opted for the breakfast sandwich on a Rosenbergs rye bagel. It was huge!! 2 eggs and sausage. The other thing I can nitpick about is the coffee was not as hot as I like it. Otherwise, there are so many things on the menu that look good including their seeded toasts and scrambles, I will definitely be back! read more

So happy to have Wendell's in the neighborhood! I've been several times now and each time is equally as great as the last. My first visit I ordered the pancakes and holy moly were they huge but they were sooooo delicious! We've also ordered some of the egg dishes and they were fantastic as well. I know many have complained of the prices in additional things like maple syrup but coming from New England I can tell you even there where it's in abundance they still charge extra for it - that's just the way it is and it's totally worth the extra dollar or so. If you went to DJ's before, you wouldn't believe the transformation. It looks so inviting, clean, modern but cozy. Went with a group of four and got a number of things and shared them all, which was a great decision as everything was fantastic! Started with the Rosenberg bagel chips with tomato jam (do not miss). Then we split the lox Benedict (its named something different but you get it), waffle with berries and clotted cream which reminded me that I need more of that in my life, the burger (my personal favorite!), and the Rueben. We didn't go till 1ish so we're more in the lunch mood. Can't wait to come back to try it all! Service was great - quick and friendly! We were torn between trying this place and another in the area. SO GLAD WE CHOOSE Wendells! We had 2 different pancakes, AMAZING...the lightest fluffiest pancakes Ive ever had. Also had the steak benedict, again....AMAZING. Best for last....the chicken fried steak. OMG! Yess! Yess! Yess! chicken fried steak is what it should be called. The breading is so unique, and FABULOUS, and its not mostly breading, like most are, its the perfect proportion for the steak, that is thicker than most.
