A great new addition to Tennyson street! Wendell's brings a New York style brunch spot to the mile high. Upon walking in, you're met with the host and the sight of the large bar to the left, the community table down the middle and the booths to the right. A New York type mural covers the back wall, but is eye catching from the front door. I love the brick walls and exposed beams, giving it a relaxed feel. They do have a spacious patio, but I have only sat inside. As far as the menu, try everything! I was lucky enough to go with people that love eating and sharing as much as me. We started with one of the seeded toasts, the number 2. The pork belly and mushroom went together perfectly and the pork belly was so tender! We moved on to one of the egg scrambles, the number 4. Hard to go wrong with an egg scramble, it was a great blend of ingredients and cooked perfectly! We ended with pancakes, the buttermilk with syrup, berry compote and cream. Let me start by saying I realize this is not a "health food" restaurant. And yet it seems a few small tweaks could make this a welcoming place so health conscious folks will show up. 1) offer a whole grain bread option, 2) can we put a vegetable forward option on the menu, a salad or veggie-packed scramble or wrap. 3) people love breakfast potatoes and the hash browns are IMO the weakest menu item: limp, soggy and the seasoning seems to sit on top rather than integrate with the potatoes. My partner and I both work as chefs on the street so we were excited to try out Wendell's. The place is super cute with a nice outdoor space, and the menu seemed awesome. However after two tries we can definitely cross it off our list. The gross and careless attitudes of the kitchen staff show how bad food can end up being when the people cooking it have no passion for the food itself. On our first visit, my partner, mother and grandmother were seated at a four top across from the entrance of the kitchen (this will become important). My partner and grandmother's food was good. My biscuits and gravy was ok except the gravy was broken and it garnished with wilted, mushy, grey chives. Gross dude, no attention to detail. My mother ordered two pancakes lightly done. I see one of the cooks checking my mother's pancakes, then switches them so the top pancake was now on the bottom. When they were brought out we checked the bottom one and it was burned to hell. So instead of re-firing another one on the fly they just decided to be lazy and hide the burned pancake, thinking we wouldn't notice. So we had it sent back, wait about fifteen minutes and the re-fire is completely raw on the inside. Give me a break. So it was re-fired it again. When one of the cooks came out of the kitchen to get some water they gave us disgusting look, like we were to blame that they can't cook pancakes and their quality standards are piss poor. On our second visit (we were hoping the first try was just a rough day for them), we had a similar experience. The hollandaise on my Benedict was super aerated and had a weird texture. My guess was that it had broken and they threw it in a blender real quick to try and fix it. My partners eggs were completely raw in the whites. He was basically given a plate of boogers. So we ask to have it re-fired (coincidentally same server as last time), and he reiterates that he would like them over medium. They came back absolutely rage cooked, I don't think over hard accurately described them. Kind of pathetic, they're chefs at a breakfast place and they can't cook breakfast food. Once again, one of the cooks coming back from the bathroom (maybe they recognized us from last time), was mean mugging us. She was also wearing a grossly short crop top in the kitchen at work. Now I am all about body positivity but that was just a flat out health code violation. I don't want your sweaty belly button hanging over into my food. The kitchen staff here seem like the kind that would rather just always blame the customer for how the food that they cooked turned out. All in all, the only positive thing about our experience was our server. I wish I got her name so I could give her a shout out. She was so incredibly nice and patient with us. A note to the cooks: have some damn respect for what you do, have some respect for food. Assume that maybe once in a while you'll be serving other chefs that know what to look for, and exercise some sort of quality standards because when you don't it's an insult to the rest of us in the industry. Pancakes were good, almond pastry was excellent, everything else was severely disappointing. Under-staffed, TERRIBLE service, everyone's "hot" food was COLD. Avocado toast had only a sliver of avocado on it and half of it was black!!! And when we asked for more, they charged us for it!!!! How can you call something avocado toast when it has only a fragment of avocado on it!?! And when did it become ok for a server to give a customer rotten food!? If that is ok with you, go ahead a try this restaurant, otherwise stay away! AND the server hovered over us while we were tipping on an machine that doesn't give you the option to tip less than 18%!! The menu looks great, however things fell apart almost immediately. My boyfriend and I walked in at about 11:30 on a Saturday morning and were told it'd be about a half hour wait for a party of two... no biggie. However, we were skipped over being seated when another party of two walked in about 10 minutes after us and were seated almost immediately (no reservations). Once we were seated it took about 10 minutes to be greeted by our waitress. As others have posted, they only offer QR menus and there are no prices anywhere. My boyfriend asked about this, and was told they were going through pricing changes- however other reviews dating back 8 months talk about the lack of pricing, so I'm guessing this is just how they operate. We asked for a price range on the entrees ($9-$16). My boyfriend ordered chicken fried steak and substitute his side of toast with a pancake. When we got the bill, his total was $16 for the chicken fried steak and then an additional $12 (!!!!) for the pancake side. Wendell's is an awesome place. The outdoor patio feels like a garden and the food hits the spot. We have been two times and both times have been great. The bagel chips with the lox spread is creamy and flavorful on thin bagel chips from Rosenberg's. We have gotten it as a brunch app both time and it was worth it. We have also tried the gigantic pancakes, the croque madam, and several other dishes and they were all quality. The staff is friendly and flexible and willing to cater to whatever your needs are. With a mix of cool and classic Wendell's takes the cake. We will definitely be back soon especially because I haven't tried the brûlée'd grapefruit yet. read more

We went early and the service was good. However the food and menu was uninspired. I ordered the egg sandwich only to get scrambled eggs on this greasy flat thing that was promoted as in house made English muffin. Next door a person ordered the waffle only to be put off by excessive thyme. I was asked about my meal by the owner and when I mentioned that I wished the eggs had some yolk. Wendell's is awesome! I was a little surprised to see some of the negative reviews, because in the 3 times I've been there the waitresses have all been really nice and the food has been great. From quickly reading some of the low reviews, it seems some people are upset DJ's isn't there anymore. DJ's was definitely good, but Wendell's is really good too. I've had the breakfast sandwich, the yogurt and tried the poutine breakfast dish, the avocado toast, vegetable sandwich and thought they were all really good. The kid's menu items are also really nice size and pretty high quality. I just tried this place for the first time this week. We ate on their porch, which was so cute and had a little shade. The kids menu was great and had awesome portions! I ordered the breakfast sandwich. It was good, but the portions seemed a little small if you are wanting a huge breakfast. The service was fine. They weren't super crowded when we went there, but I don't feel like we were checked on a ton. I will give them this- the accoutrements on the Bloody Mary were good. That was the best part. The Bloody Mary mix itself was bland and watered down. We had to wait 35 minutes, which was fine. Once seated, it took an additional 15 minutes to order. I got the basic breakfast, "The Wendell's" I believe it was called. I ordered my eggs over medium. One was hard-cooked, the other was runny. Bad sign for a breakfast place if eggs cannot be cooked uniformly. Other than that, my breakfast was ok. My husband ordered the chicken-fried steak. Aside from being cold, the breading was entirely flavorless, and the steak was tough and incredibly hard to chew. Staff was great just not enough to accommodate. They were literally running trying to keep up. Food was good, however it took a very long time and was very expensive for breakfast. We have been to this restaurant pre-Covid and couldn't wait to return. At this point I would say it's not worth the wait and the cost. Awesome place! Great vibe and fun decor. I had the No. 3 Seeded toast which was fantastic. The Beet Egg is like a soft boiled pickled egg. It was a nice balance between umame/savory and light flavorful. I can't wait to have it again. The cortado was fantastic as well. The only reason this place does not get five stars is that people who sat down after us got their food before us. That one always gets me. Other than that this place is phenomenal. Chic diner feel, great graphic design on the menu, fun drink options (pony High Life to go with your bloody, or a grenade Coors banquet) but the food was below average at best. Got the Benedict with Salmon. And a side salad. The salad was, well just greens with light oil dressing. Friend got French toast and a side of bacon. She had to send her bacon back to get more crispy was barely cooked, and her French toast was burnt?
