I have been a Pho junkie since my friend popped my 'Pho cherry' a few years back. I arrived at Viet Sub and ordered my usual rare beef noodle soup. It arrived pipping hot within minutes and had a delicious flavor to it. Meat was thinly sliced and very tender unlike some other places I have been to in the past. The standard bean sprouts & lime accompanied the soup. I devoured the entire thing not leaving a single drop of broth in the bowl. Very tasty! Negative - Place is tiny, not much seating space, so don't plan to eat there! Only use throwaway utensils, I guess they have no dishwasher space since the place is so small and meant for take out only. If you want a Vietnamese sub to go, this is the place. I had a chicken sub. I liked it so much, I immediately bought a BBQ pork sub. Not as spicy as Thi Thi in Calgary but very nicely done. Fresh, crispy bread. Fresh veggies, a light sauce (with other kinds in bottles on each table), my only complaint- they're stingy with the meat. BUT- that's why their subs range from only $3.25 to $4.25. Tiny portions (pho noodles). Food court quality. I rate this 2 stars based on my order of the beef pho. The noodle portions were extremely small (as shown in the photo). The soup base tasted very similar to the pho soup at the Pacific Centre food court (which is not very good for Vancouver standards). For $7.25, you will get better value for a small bowl of pho at a conventional vietnamese sit-down restaurant. Very kind service, good food and HUGE serving of soup noodle. We would definitely come back whenever we come back to Vancouver.

This is my go-to banh mi place for a budget-friendly, filling, nutritious lunch. I mean, come on, it's called Viet Sub for a reason. My favourite is the Special Sub. It's $6 of delicious toasted baguette filled with Vietnamese ham, cold cuts, meat, meatballs, cucumber, mint, carrot, radish, onion, and cilantro. I hate basically all the vegetables I just listed on their own but in this sub it's GLORIOUS. And for $6 you seriously can't go wrong. I'm not a particularly light eater and the protein in this fuels my second half of my work day PLUS a fitness class after work. The baguette may look small but it seriously stuffs you just right. I highly recommend you find a stool in the small café if you're able to find a seat and enjoy a small cup of hot tea with your banh mi in the winter - it's definitely food for you soul. read more

The cafe is designed for those on-the-go. Seatings were made for only 8 people MAX. Food were served in and with paper/plastic containers/bowls. I wanted to like this place so much, but the artificial dinnerware definitely ruined the taste and experience. The restaurant was not very clean either -- maybe I walked in during their busy hours. Was extremely starving one day and excited to be in the area to finally try this bahn mi place. The service was quick, friendly, and the sandwich was served with the smile which was great. I really enjoyed the freshly toasted bread, but for some reason the lemongrass chicken Banh Mi kept tasting like it was stuffed with tuna fish salad. It was a very strange taste, odd texture of meat, a very watery mayo sauce and just wasn't sure what I was eating or if perhaps I was just served the wrong thing... I was already out the door and too hungry to make me stop eating it by the time I discovered this though... It is what it is... A small, what appears to be family run, operation that serves quality Viet and Chinese food. Had the Shrimp Salad roll and small wonton soup = $ 10. It was just great. The pho here is really good, and reasonably priced. Tasty broth and lots of beef. Super quick service. Can't go wrong. Subs are decent but could use more meat and veg. * When will I learn to respect the magic line? * There is that magic line that runs between East Vancouver and Vancouver West for Vietnamese food. Go West of the line at your own peril! There should be a Vietnamese food lifeguard in Vancouver West (perhaps wearing a red Yelp t-shirt?) to save you when swimming in the shallow offerings. But bánh mì in downtown? I had to try. (Yes, I am like Homer Simpson that keeps hitting himself in the head wondering if it will hurt the next time!) Had the "Special Sub" which included Vietnamese Ham, Mystery Meat, and Meat Ball. There was almost no pate on the bread (perhaps a little trickle?!?!?!). The limited veggies (cucumber and cilantro only - there were no pickled veggies! WTF? Guess they ran out?) were fresh. They toasted the bread too instead of it being naturally crunchy and fresh. Humph..... Overall the pickings are slim downtown and in a pinch I would return. But I would probably just be hitting myself in the head again! Super fast, super friendly, super hygienic service! I usually grab my chicken sub to go from here, today I decided to eat in. The best thing about this place is consistency. you're never wondering if your meal is going to look different from the day before. I've also had a rice dish from here but take out, even during busy times they are so quick to prep and present your meal. It seems like it's operated by a small family and space behind the counter is limited but they are so efficient. They also use gloves to prepare and pass you your food which I totally appreciate. Ugh this is so crazy bad. The banh mi was STALE... And I ate it right there.... fresh?! It was chewy and just unappetizing. No meat whatsoever, the special had thin slices and pretty nonexistent two three peewnie slices max- think mini post it notes. The veggies weren't pickled properly they were just veggies, no sweet no sour? Oh come on how do you mess THAT up even I can do that?!?! So baffled by the whole experience. Had the veg sub the 2nd time. It was perfect with miso sauce, warmed tofu pickled carrot and radish, & hot peppers but it could have been warmer. both times i ate in the place but mostly they have take out. Tea is included in all food orders There is a cooler of drinks, art o the walls, outside plastic tables and an indoor bar across the window with stools. No bathroom but they have sanitizer. My preferred style of serving: you order, you get what you want, and no extra fluff needed. I was out for a solo-food adventure to relieve my banh mi desires, and low and behold this place popped up. I didn't study their menu beforehand, so I asked for the universal order: their banh mi dac biet (house special). From an inspection, you have the usual pickles, cucumber, cilantro, and onions, and a jumble of cha lua to BBQ pork (I think) slathered in a tangy house mayo and a special brown sauce all inside a fluffy white baguette, which for the first time I've seen, was cut on top instead of the side. Now if you think about it, the best parts of the banh mi is when they're all mixed together. The side cut approach that most places do means that (usually) you won't be able to fit the entire sandwich in your mouth, meaning you'll either get a mouth full of veggie or a mouth full of meat. HOWEVER, from the top down, this means the bread is flat enough for your mouth and you'll get every little bit mixed together in every way. The little things about sandwiches make the biggest difference in my day. Now knowing this place exists, I won't have to travel too far to find a good stop for banh mi :) read more

You order from a small picture menu, adorned by a small counter and a few old stools, feeling like you're about to eat something greasy, salty, and mushy, and sit down at the window counter then, BOOM! You get hit by the Vietnamese flavor train! Crusty french bread, sweet spicy bbq pork, fresh cilantro, onions, carrots, and sprouts explode in your mouth, and sweet savory pork rounds out the nicely balanced banh-mi. All memories of standing in line for msg bathed chow mein fly from your mind and you are transported to a beautiful Asian market with fresh vegetables and warm baked bread crispiness. The orders arrive quickly, in the fast friendly fashion that banh-mi's usually do, the staff makes you feel welcome with smiles and sincere hospitality. We also ordered shrimp fresh rolls, spring rolls, both were top notch, as was the peanut sauce that came with the fresh roll. It seemed as though it was homemade as it wasn't familiar to me and the consistency was perfect for dipping EVERYTHING in. The lightly fried, still crunchy (not soggy) spring roll came in a delightfully large portion that was ideal for sharing with a hungry group. I got a pho special to go, which impressed me most of all. Pho is often bland and boring, but not here! They individually packaged the meat, hot broth, sauce, and vegetables all separately to go, so they would all maintain their peak texture and flavor at the moment they were combined. They came together in a triumphant symphony that will echo across my tongue for all eternity. And the total bill for all 3 of us to happily stuff ourselves, including banh-mi, appetizers, and pho? $20. I love Viet Sub. It's very well priced, it's tremendously tasty, and you'll have your food within 5 minutes. It's a perfect lunch joint if you work downtown. I get the Veggie sub Bahn Mi every time. Loads of pickled veggies, cilantro, fried tofu and delicious sauce loaded onto a crisp and fluffy baguette. As Ted Danson might remark to Larry David, "It's Heaven". The downside to this place is it's tiny, and can only house about 4 customers at time. It feels very claustrophobic inside at times. Tiny little shop, super-friendly dude working the cash register, and crazy fast service. I felt like I was walking out the door with my food before the order had finished leaving my lips. With the delicious aromas tempting me from the bag, I raced back to my hotel to indulge. The spring rolls were fresh and light - crispy veggies packed inside a crunchy, yet chewy wrapper. The dipping sauce is a wonderfully balanced sweet heat. Both the hubs and I went with the BBQ pork sandwich, and were glad we did. Lots of tender pork bathed in a creamy, spicy sauce and covered in fresh, crunchy veggies. And oh, the bread! Be still my heart, the perfectly crusty, chewy baguette. Its not easy to satisfy, when you have smile and have some of the best prices in Vancouver for a decent meal. Chicken Vietnamese sub with extra chili, is $3.64 cents with tax. I feel silly even saying the price, because that is just amazing. Its a great place, with really really really really fast service. Based on some of the meh-y reviews I was expecting this place to be just ok. I was pleasantly surprised! There is really no ambiance or decor, this is a basic hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant, which I happen to love. Seating is realllllllly limited - one two seater table inside, 5 bar stools and an outside table for 2. I think this place is mostly for take-out. But when it comes down to the pho I was happy. I got the well done beef pho. The broth was just the way I like it, not too salty, I didn't feel weird afterward which happens when I eat too much MSG. While I sat and slurped my tasty Pho I noticed that every minute someone was walking in and ordering a sandwich. And from the reviews I see that is the main draw. Banh mi - Wahoo! I ordered the BBQ chicken sub and it was delicious! Loaded with meat, greens, carrots, cukes, onions, and topped with a yummy sauce that compliments all the flavours of the sub . The french bread was nicely baked and crisp, and everything tasted so fresh yet hearty! And all under 5 bucks, yay! The staff are really nice, and are meticulous with providing everything. The lady who made my sandwich almost freaked cuz she almost forgot to give me napkins- haha she was so sweet! Also, the people working there MUST put strong emphasis on cleanliness. 3 honkin' huge costco-sized bottles of hand sani right by the counter. This is the best place to go for lunch if you're looking for something cheap and different. For $4.00, you can get full on an amazing Banh Mi that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. B1 for life! They never lack ingredients, are consistent and have the BEST bread. If you like vietnamese subs you know the bread can be a total game changer and these guys have perfectly sized, crispy, FRESH bread. There are never any 'weird bits' in the chicken either - it's a worry free experience. The guy that I see there 95% of the time is the most consistently friendly person I've ever encountered in service. I have never seen him frown, if you have I feel sorry for you. Small little shop on Robson but it's hard to miss since there's a huge sign saying VIET SUB across it. There's only a couple of seats inside (shop is made for quick eats) and one cashier. Their subs have a certain kind of sauce in it that differs from the generic viet subs (and it makes it really tasty!) they also have bottles of sauces along the wall beside the door for people who just can't get enough of it :).
