I had the pleasure to try Obanhmi thanks to a friend's recommendation as she had done an Instagram collaboration with them. She had mentioned that this place had great banh mi's with a fantastic price point and quality. I ordered a meal with sate beef banh mi and pork spring roll while my boyfriend ordered the honey garlic chicken banh mi meal. Both came with drinks on the side and each meal was estimated between $14-$16 depending on the drink we got. The shop had just been renovated with a clean white and red interior. I really liked the cute newspaper with Vietnamese culture as wallpaper! Taste wise - the pork spring rolls looked simple but they actually tasted great! The filling really reminded me of my dad's spring rolls...lots of meat and vermicelli. My banh mi was nicely sized with a decent amount of meat and veggies, the beef was well flavoured and had a nice aroma. For the honey garlic, my boyfriend and I did both find it a bit dry...We wished there would be more sauce in the banh mi (or more vegetable filling). I have been wanting to try the Banh mi here since my friend told me it serves halal Banh mi. Only 1 is halal and that is the lemongrass chicken. I am not sure if you need to specify you want the halal version. We had the lemongrass chicken and classic cold cut. I much prefer the classic cold cut. Very tasty. I wish they added sriracha and hoisin sauce on it too. Maybe I need to ask? The iced Vietnamese coffee is good, strong and flavorful. The pork spring rolls were average, not something I will get again. There are meal combos which include the spring roll and water or pop. Add $3 for iced coffee. If you do not want the spring roll, just get the coffee as it is a dollar off with a Banh mi purchase. There is also a 15% discount for online order for pick up. We didn't do that as it seemed like a hassle. There is also a loyalty program where you get a free sandwich with 10 points (1 point for each sandwich). A lot of good food in one area. We dropped by on a Saturday for lunch (around 12:30pm). There was a line of people that kept coming in. The inside is new with 5 tables and a couple seats by the window to people watch. Their fridge is also stocked with meats from Viet Huong Flavors (same owners as Obanhmi) and Lemongrass Queen so you can take home beef balls, lemongrass chicken and BBQ pork. Prices were in the $8.99 to 12.99 range. The menu is small with 8 banh mi options, sides and drinks. They offer two combos; banh mi combo (gets you spring rolls and pop/water) while the coffee combo saves you $1.00. They also have a loyalty program (buy 10 banh mi, get one free). - Vietnamese coffee ($4.25) - French press with condensed milk and iced. The coffee is intense but in a good way. I don't drink coffee but I'd get this again. - Deluxe cold cut ($6.00) - pâté, house mayo, Vietnamese ham, and seasoned pork belly. This was the better of the two banh mi's that we tried. B liked the bread; slight crunch and an enjoyable mouth feel. The jalapenos were actually spicy. Rest of the toppings (cilantro, pickled daikon and carrots) were standard but good. - Beef sate ($6.00) - beef marinated in sate spicy sauce. I had such high hopes after looking at the menu and reading a few of the more recent reviews. I noticed their prices were a little higher than some of my favourite banh mi places but I wanted to give this place a try. I ordered their regular meat banh mi, nem nuong banh mi, their lemon grass chicken banh mi, and their premium iced coffee drink. When I picked up my take out order I was greeted by friendly staff and I appreciated their branding. I asked if they made their bread in house in which they replied they do not but emphasized how everything besides their bread was made in house. Although I was a little disappointed with the bread not being freshly made in house I was still excited to try their sandwiches and I was craving a good Vietnamese iced coffee. I had read online on their menu that the premium iced coffee had a secret ingredient (I really wish I asked what that ingredient was, because maybe I would have just ordered a regular iced coffee). So unfortunately things went a bit downhill as I left the establishment. I took a sip of the iced coffee and I noticed there some "bits" as I sipped at my drink which was off putting to me. At first I thought "are these pieces of ground coffee beans that weren't strained properly?" but It wasn't bitter and as I analyzed what this weird texture was, it appeared to be bits of raw coconut flakes (I could be wrong....but whatever it was, I did not enjoy it). I also found the drink to be really sweet. I have a huge sweet tooth so for me to say it's too sweet would equate it to being wayyy to sweet for the average person. Heading read other ppl's comments and the owner's response to the drink being sweet, I thought it would have been rectified...perhaps they have changed it...but to me the drink is way too sweet. Now to the banh mi's. The positives: fillings were flavoured well and the ratio of veggies to meat were great. The downside was the bread. I really wanted to love their banh mi's because I thought the staff are genuinely nice people and it's great they make their own fillings....however if the bread is not good, it's hard to give this place a higher rating, especially if they are in competition with some really good places close by and are a tad bit cheaper. I'm happy to pay for a higher priced banh mi, but your overall product has to be better than others. I was reading the lower reviews (not many so far) and I have to agree the bread is bad. It doesn't taste fresh. A good banh mi should have a nice crisp to it, without having to put it in the oven. I ate it as is and it definitely had a chewy texture which left me really disappointed. Working from home now....I can't go out and get my regular, yummy and delicious spots near my job. So....when a craving hits....what do you do? Took off one star though because they gave me the wrong sandwich and we were really looking forward to trying that one :( Tried the deluxe cold cut yesterday and had to come back today to try more. Had the lemongrass chicken which did not disappoint as well. Tried the garlic pork (which was supposed to be the xiu Mai) but it was still delicious so we aren't upset. What I love the most is how the bread isn't too crunchy so you're not tearing up the inside of your mouth while you eat . And the banh mis weren't dry at all. Looks like I've found a new banh mi spot! Pricing is really reasonable and close to other shops along Victoria drive. I really like how their bread is made. It has a perfect blend of a soft center and a crispy exterior. They don't cheap out on the amount of meat and have a good ratio of veggies to meat too. Good stuff! read more
