So, our United flight from Houston to San Francisco was cancelled and we were rerouted to Vancouver. Mom and dad were tired and hungry. Travelling for 24 hours just to get from Florida to Vancouver will do that to you. So, off to the food court for some late, late night food. Dad wanted a chicken sandwich and fries. I like this church's. Staff is always friendly and sometimes if you are lucky, they throw in extra stuff. I have gotten extra chicken tenders and bombers. Unexpected but it made my day or night. The drive thru is 24 hours and is great when you get hungry in the wee hours. The only issue is it can be so busy, especially like Christmas or new year, that it is impossible to even wait to get in for the drive thru. At other times, parking is easy. read more

I usually go to the one on kingsway in Burnaby, but this one had a drive through so I tried it. Big mistake! They had me park to wait for my order and I waited over a half an hour. I gave up and went in to wait at the counter so they knew I was still waiting, there was no mistake. I watched the line up of order receipts and bags waiting for orders, it's just so poorly managed here. I watched at least 10 groups come and go while I waited, it's insanity. Every fast food place you've been to is superior to this place. All the staff working are older, maybe they could hire some of the youth at McDonald's to help them run the place smoother? Hard pass! Was craving fried chicken for awhile and finally gave in. Was around the neighbourhood and went through the drive thru at the Kingsway location. This is the first drive thru where you order and pick up your meal right at the window. Most places you order through a microphone then drive up to pick your order. Saw a poster advertising Church's 3 piece meal for $8.49 and ordered it. It comes with a drink but I said I didn't want one. The employee asked if I would like an apple pie or salad in lieu of a drink, which I was pleasantly surprised about. As I already had a large salad made for me at home, I got the apple pie. We are SO disappointed by the way we were treated and were ripped off by this location. We went there and ordered 2 pieces of chicken, a large fries and a large coleslaw...it cost us $29 plus for this. When we to to the drive through window we were shocked and asked about a combo...the drive through lady just said something like well 'you didn't ask' BUT she didn't offer either!! You should have seen our faces when we got home and opened up the fries and slaw...we only got a half box of fries and the coleslaw was almost down to the middle. So what would you do? I called and asked to speak with a manager...she blew me off and said 'oh well we were busy and maybe that's why you weren't told about a less expensive option and oh that's why they didn't fill up the fries and yeah we only put 3 ounces of slaw in the large size'. But here's the thing--not only didn't she say sorry, but she didn't offer us anything!! And by the way go to Safeway for coleslaw at $1.59 an ounce...a third of the price! Can't go wrong with fried chicken. This location has been around forever. Parking is plentiful in the lot around the building as well as on the street (Kingsway) at night. Because of the location (right at an irregularly angled intersection) there are barriers preventing entry or exit from certain directions. Plan according to avoid circling around for 5 minutes. The interior has been somewhat renovated but the exterior is obviously from the 1970s. Staff are friendly, and the chicken was nice, fresh, and juicy. Beautiful. The actual restaurant closes 2300, but the drive thru is 24h. Something to keep in mind. Seriously this chain is a must try. Now if only the pricing were cheaper. read more

A bewilderingly busy place where your order taker actually assembles your order and in some items - drops those items in the fryer as needed (hello cheddar jalapeño bombers of a it to bitty size - a portion of 5 pieces.) wow. Not used to that anymore kinda cool. The North American in me says portions are small however the reasonable eater I'm trying to be they're just right. The one sized poutine is the smallest I've seen yet however it was more just fries and gravy with a little bit of cheese and yes itty bitty. The apple pie (minus the cinnamon sugar) is what McDonald's used to be before they chose to use their pizza ovens for a sad healthy excuse of a apple pie. Love it - freaking awesome!!!!! For once it wasn't munchkin size. That was nice. The two pieces of chicken (mentioned briefly above) was wayyyyyy greasier than expected and less meat than expected bit if that's spicy I'd hate to try regular (I could really only consume one piece before my grease level was reached). A Dr Pepper cola - a nice treat with the combo size more like a McDonald's small. Sounds like a monster meal? Not really. Shout-out to the Manager on Duty today! Church's has recently changed their menu, when I went through the drive-through I was uncertain that they still had chicken tenders. I asked - twice - and was assured they still did, being asked '3 or 5 piece?'. Two visits in a row I received bone-in chicken instead. On today's visit, I took my order back in while asking for clarification. Turns out they still have chicken tenders. The drive-thru attendant simply assumed I wanted regular chicken, even though I asked about them... *shrug* Anyway, if not for the fact that the drive-through didn't pause to listen to my question, this would have been a 5-star review. The Manager on Duty listened to why I was returning, and solved my problem by confirming the new menu structure and providing me with 5 chicken tenders. Lately, I've been harping on friends and tweeting to strangers to try to discover the best fried chicken in the city. No establishment seems to want to lay claim to this territory, but three places consistently get mentioned amongst people I know: L.A. Chicken, Duffin's and Church's. I usually steer clear of fast food, and for over 20 years of living here had never been to Church's. Last weekend I gave it a try. In the back, racks of previously fried chicken pieces laid waiting to quickly fill the next walk-in or drive-thru customer. Every customer knew exactly what they were doing. No dawdling, no indecision. I ushered myself aside, and when I was ready: "Two pieces, spicy, upgrade one to a breast please." This upgrade, I discovered, would take 15 minutes to complete. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't overwhelmed either. The taste is all in the coating. The chicken itself is a bit bland, the outside a bit over-fried. Spicy really means spicy, and it had a good amount of bite. I was confused by the sizing of the pieces, until I realized that it seemed that they cut the breast in half. It was smaller than the thigh. I then remembered that they called it "white meat" on the menu and not "breast" so I'm sure they can get away with it (although the cashier called it a breast). I tried the corn on the cob, and it was the worst I've ever tasted. Soggy, dissolved. I think they have it sitting in water all day, trying to turn it into polenta. The corn deserves zero stars, but I'll consider this a chicken review only. Do yourself a favour. Skip the combo meals, and go straight for the individual pieces. Two pieces will cost you just over $3, but the combo with fries and a small pop is $6.99. I'll continue my quest for chicken, but I don't think I'll be making a habit of going to Church's on Sunday. read more

There is a lot of bad fried chicken out there. It's too bad because chicken is the perfect meat to fry, it comes with its own coating of fat between the skin and the meat. The most common problem is that the breading is heavy and needs to be cooked more to be palatable. Unfortunately, this leads to overcooked meat. Leave it under a heat lamp and the situation gets worse. This chicken kitchen knows to dredge the meat in seasoned flour to dry the surface of the skin then use very hot, day old oil. A good fry cook knows that fresh oil is weak oil and Church's knows this too, Now you are talking about a very crisp crust and soft, juicy meat, where the fat between the skin and the meat is rendered but not rendered useless. If you don't believe me, take it from the toughest critic. My 10-year old Natalie, says "If they serve chicken in heaven, they get it from the Kingsway Church's". read more

I've been to this location quite a handful of times but it's only now that I'm reviewing this location and I have to say that it's awesome! Central location in East Vancouver (to be specific: corner of Kingsway and Slocan/33rd Avenue) The other reviews are consistent with mine such that this location is indeed a 24 hour drive-thru; clean inside with plenty of seating for the average family of 4/5; quiet (depending on the day and time you go of course but I went in at 9PM) and too nothing fancy. All of the employees there are all very nice and are fast with the orders too. Church's Chicken is definitely a go to place if you're on a budget especially if you need some cheap food at various hours of the day. If you don't have coupons, it's okay since most of their menu items are somewhere between $4-8 bucks. The coupon I used included 3 pieces of chicken with small fries for $5 even after tax. In terms of food, their spicy flavour is definitely spicy! Waaayyy better than KFC and their hot sauce. Their original recipe is good too but it can definitely be better if they make it more crunchier. Ordered a chicken sandwich and should have known better when I saw an employee taking mayonaisse from a huge UNREFRIDGERATED tub of it on the floor, which was also filthy and dirty. Long story short I haven't had FOOD POISONING in years , but thank you CHURCHES CHICKEN on Kingsway for making me sick in bed for a day and missing a $250 day of work. Have to say, this beats the heck out of KFC in the fast food chicken department. Might even kick off Popeyes for the crown for best fast food style chicken. Blasphemy - I know! However, after trying their crunchy blazing hot fried chicken - a family combo with drumsticks, thighs, wings and breasts- with fries and gravy- was a super tasty choice on a cold Vancouver evening. We got a mix - spicy and regular - and the spicy was definitely SPICY! Like, you could see the red colorings in the crispy bits. A little too hot for the husband but perfect for me. The gravy was a great counterpoint to the seasoned fries. Simple dining room, clean eating area with tables and mini booths. I've had my fair share of fried chicken and this specific Church's chicken branch is definitely the best! Maybe it's because I grew up in the area, but no matter which Churches chicken I go to, they always pale in comparison to this one! I do have to admit the prices are starting to get a bit crazy, but there's no better fried chicken than this. Their apple pie's are amazing too.
