    Beef vermicelli bowl
    Amanda L.

I have been going to Ba Le for their banh mi's since I was a kid, but this was the first time that I had their vermicelli bowl. The portions are huge, especially for such a good price (around $15). I had enough food for two meals. The beef was flavorful and there was a generous amount of meat. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The seating isn't great, but it's not too bad.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My friend did have to wait a bit to get us a table as space is quite limited. The space is also shared with hanoi drip coffee. The hochicha strawberry was bomb, but a touch too sweet. The Thai tea was ok, but not sweet enough. Overall, worth checking out. Also, it was relatively easy to find free parking in the area.

I came by to try 2 of their most popular drinks, the smooth, perfectly crafted Strawberry Matcha (I'm quite picky about my strawberry matcha drinks & this was legit!) & the Famous Egg Coffee (Ca Phe Trung), a strong velvety drink. I also tried their new signature dessert, the Ca Phe Sua Tiramisu. This dessert is decadently creamy & boasts bold coffee notes. A solid choice for tiramisu lovers! Of course, while there I couldn't not grab one of their tasty banh mi sandwiches! My fave is the #5 Special Dặc Biệt (ham, headcheese, sausage, pate, mayo). I don't know how they do it, but their baguette is perfection... soft inside & so crispy on the outside, while not being hard at all! [[HIGHLIGHT]]This location is quite small with a few tables inside, but they do have a patio outside as well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

I love this location. They have quite a lot of options for banh mi (including several vegetarian options), drinks and Vietnamese desserts. They made their bread daily and they also made their own pate. The 99 bus stop was right outside so quite convenient to come by.

Best banh mi bread I've ever had!!! It's so fluffy on the inside with a thin Crissy exterior. It's also huge! They know their bread is good because they sell it individually for $2.75 each. I got the pork lemongrass and found it had a generous amount of meat. Asked for spicy but didn't find it spicy at all. Overall I think it was a great value for only $6.75 (no tax on top of menu prices) as I was quite full after my sandwich.

    The Special

I've been going to Ba Le for over 25yrs and have never been let down by the quality of their banh mi. I rarely, if ever, stray from the special which has become the flavour and all the textures I come to expect from any banh mi from any shop. It's the standard for vietnamese sandwiches and it's a high standard. If you expect high quality service, this isn't the place for you. They have no interest in talking about your day or you thoughts along the political spectrum. However, they might want to know if you want it with the jalapeno peppers or not. With a handful of shops across the Lower Mainland, I tend to choose them over others because it's exactly what I expect every single time. A transaction that results in me getting to eat their special. The special includes a variety of deli meats, pate, and all the usual fixings of cilantro, pickled daikon and carrots, jalapeno spears, and (fish?) sauce. It's delightful. It's delicious. It's what I crave. NOTE: I also might have been trained like Pavlov's dog by the snap of the elastic band on the paper they wrap each sandwich in.

    Good luck incense thing~

Looks like Ba Le has opened a new location at the corner of Fraser and Broadway. Rejoice. Parking is available on the side streets outside of rush hour. The building is brand new, so the place is nice and shiny. Staff are friendly. Service with a smile. Sandwiches are in the $4-6 range. Quite a step up from $2-3 once upon a time in their old location, but times change. The #5 Special sub I had tasted like a cleaner version of what I had in Vietnam. In other words, it was so beautiful. The guy asked me if I wanted it spicy (I said Yes) and the resulting banh mi sure was, thanks to a few slices of jalapeno. These guys know what they're doing, and don't mess around. I will be dreaming about this sandwich for a while. They also sell Asian drinks (the stuff normally found only at T&T) here. The only sketchy thing was that some hobo auntie showed up while I was eating and shamelessly rooted through and basically stole all of their recyclables. Not sure if the staff noticed, but that's seriously not cool. This is private property, not some bin in a park. I probably should've said something. In any case, looks like we have a new winner. I'll be back for sure at some point.

    $5.50 for this garbage????!!!!!
    Jason T.

Talk about taking advantage of post pandemic prices. Sandwiches used to be just over $5. Now, it's $7.50 with absolutely no taste. They must have forgotten how to make something they were really known for - Vietnamese Sandwiches. I ordered ice coffee and noticed they stuff half of the cup with ice, I figured I can ask one with little ice, hoping to get more coffee. Well, that hope went straight out the door as soon as they handed me my coffee. I barely got more than half a cup of coffee for $5.50. Will never return and will advise others to go else where for Vietnamese Sandwiches. So creedy!

It was an awesome day to go snowshoeing up at Mount Seymour on the dog mountain trail. We brought up bánh mì from Balê on Broadway. The bánh mì xíu mại (meatball 5.50) had a large portion of meat while the bánh mì đặc biệt (special 5.50) had just enough.

My boyfriend and I were not very hungry so we shared a #5 "the special". We thought the portion was quite generous for $5! We didn't get the combo but it looks pretty good (soft drink & spring rolls) for an extra $3.50. Not a fancy place but we appreciated the homey Viet vibe, and family photo that hung on the left side of the store! We visited on a Sunday and there was two families and another couple. Everyone appeared quite happy with the food.

    Vegetarian "chicken" bahn mi (vegan)

They now have several vegan options, so I decided to try their lemongrass vegan "chicken" banh mi ($6.25) -- make sure to specify no mayo. The sandwich was ready within a few minutes. The "chicken" had a wonderful texture, and was coated in a delicious sweet hoi sin sauce. Nice crunchy vegetables (carrot, radish, cucumber), as well as cilantro, accompany the "chicken", along with some Thai chilis and jalapeno, though it's not that spicy. Fresh baked, chewy bread rounds this out. I was really happy with this. Recommended if banh mi is your thing.

I thought about zero stars. Ordered some viet teriyaki sandwich. But they had a awesome cold Viet coffee so didn't give it zero star. Wasn't so much the taste of the sandwich which turned me off. There's barely any meat. Reminds me of sweet onion teriyaki of subway but 1/4 the amount of chicken. Just not as good as Subway lol. Sandwich is 6.50 for a foot long and 3.50 for the Viet iced coffee. Don't think I'll be back. Also don't recommend.

I love this one cause it's not as busy as the main one so I can buy and leave without having a line up! I've been going here since I was a teen and the quality never fails. I usually go for the chicken or house special and if you like meat balls that's good as well. They got combos in this location, you can choose spring rolls, salad rolls and even hot broth! The older gentleman that works here is awesome, super nice. I like to get the sticky rice with Viet ham and Chinese sausage. They are totally affordable and they make bread in-house I usually go savage and get the buy 10 get one free cause they aren't heavy to consume so I mean why not YOLO skip the dishes even picks up here too! But if you can come in yourself and eat right when it's fresh! You also have the option to have the ingredients separated so you can make later if you want to make it fresh as well! All you gotta do is ask and I like to add extra peppers and mayo and liver spread!

Plastic wrap from the sausage is included in the house special! A very special sandwich!

Unfortunately, this one was a bit disappointing. The interior was overly moist, the caramelized crust lacked the crispness I was hoping for, and the honeycomb structure wasn't very well developed. Overall, it was just average. We also ordered the Strawberry Pistachio Tart. The strawberries were fresh with a nice balance of sweetness, and there was a good amount of pistachio chunks. However, it lacked the layers of flavor that make a tart memorable. On the bright side, the coffee was excellent and easily my favorite part of the visit. I'd happily come back for a coffee, but I'd probably try different pastries next time.

Gary's only allows to order the fresh mango cakes up to one week ahead to ensure they have enough ripe mangos, which I admire their dedication. We ordered the 6 inch cake for 9 people (7 adults and 2 kids) and everyone got a thin to average slice. The cake is definitely prettier than the other fresh mango cakes on the market, has a lot more mangos that are perfectly ripe and sweet, there is less wipped cream, and the sponge cake is softer. The family agreed that Gary's has the best fresh mango cake but at $69 for a 6 inch cake, versus $43 for a 6 inch mango cake from Saint Germaine, a cake from Gary's is definitely a treat and for special occasions. Is Gary's worth the premium price? I think so but not everyone in my family agreed. One thing to note: Gary's do offer cake in a jar that's $8.50 each. When we went, they had a BOGO deal with the mango cake jars. My nephew asked my sister to buy the BOGO deal knowing that the 6 inch cake was not going to be enough, as the kids like having a second slice of cake.
