Eggs Any Style ($9.50) + Protein ($3.95): regrettable, and forgettable unfortunately.
Jack W.

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE I want to recommend small local businesses, but I cannot do it for Joyeaux - at least based on their breakfast. Maybe their other entrees are better? === 2. FOOD Egg Any Style ($9.50) + Protein (+$3.95) The price isn't bad, considering the inflation/pricing since the pandemic...but: - The two eggs were fine. - The potatoes were alright also. - The fruit was aged - I did not eat most of it. - The bread slices were small. - The ham was...boiked and then cooked? Or cooked from frozen? It was not great and did not finish that either. === 3. SERVICE It's perhaps family-run; unfortunately, while the man serving was nice when present, he was often not present or busy cleaning in the back. So it was slower to get moving on a work day - not sure I would want to risk it again as even the nearby Tim Horton's seemed move patrons a lot faster. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's got an older, darker interior - like it was a bar perhaps at one point? It seemed clean, but the age is showing in the chairs and tabletops. You could bring in groups of 8 or less and wheelchairs / baby strollers should fit. Not sure you'd intentionally drive here, but if you did, best of luck on the street or in a nearby parking garage (all of which are expensive).

Hot and sour soup was more like sweet and sour
Christina L.

The ordering system here is not the most organized. We saw people order at the counter, but the owner told us we can order at our table. Tons of people walked in after we sat down and ordered. We finally waved down the owner to take our order after sitting for 15 minutes. My partner's vermicelli came, he ate, finished eating, and my hot and sour soup and veggie stir fry was nowhere in sight. We waited another 10 minutes, and they delivered my soup noodle to the wrong table. When I finally got my food, my partner just watched me eat, which was no fun. The hot and sour soup tasted more like sweet and sour. It didn't taste good at all. I did enjoy the tofu and vegetable stir fry with onion and ginger sauce. I would get the veggie stir fry to go next time, but I would not want to eat in here again.

Calamari appetizer with petite salad

It's been a while Joyeaux...but happy to be savouring a shrimp salad roll along with Jasmine tea and calamari apple. Still a quirky menu with lots to satisfy every appetite. The shrimp roll is plump with two shrimp each and crisp veg. Peanut sauce for dipping has a slight tang, pleasant texture. The calamari are from a robust creature- three inches across- very tender with a light crunch. Nice refreshing fresh tomato and cucumber, pickled daikon and carrot round out the plate. A nice afternoon lunch on a warm day. Will return for the brisket on a rainy day. Located on Howe street, across from Holt Renfrew Men. Casual ambience with black wood tables and chairs. Highly recommend for snacking or meal anytime.

Much better Viet food than the restaurants around. The fried rice was piping hot, and the lemon grass chicken rice was delicious!

Vegetable & Tofu Noodle Soup (vegan)
Matt B.

I stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday around 12:30, and the place was packed -- I got the last table for 2. They have a fairly large vegetarian section of the menu, including two veggie broth-based noodle soups. I ordered their Vegetable & Tofu Noodle soup ($14.75 plus tax; they also have a hot & sour noodle soup). Their menu said $13.75, which I was told after was "an old menu" -- not cool. Despite how busy the place was, my soup came out in under 10 minutes. The soup came with plenty of veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, green cabbage, and carrot), soft tofu, veggie fish (?) balls, and slightly over-cooked thin rice noodles. The broth was gentle, moderately salted but on the blander side. It's amped up nicely with their chili oil though. On the whole, it's a solid but middle-of-the-road veggie pho. Service was fast and competent, but I don't appreciate being charged more than what's stated on the menu -- that leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Decent spot on the whole if you're downtown and want some veggie pho.

It's okay.. Came over during lunch on a weekday, looking for something wholesome. And this was okay. Picked the typical house special noodle. The noodle was meh, not the smooth type I like. The broth was sweet and somewhat umami, but it tasted more like Hoi sin sauce rather than natural flavor from the beef and bone. Still warm and hit the spot on that day,... Portion was decent, and they've topped on the sprouts rather than letting the customer add that themselves. They've also prepared a bunch of cold water for customer to grab, so they can save on the customer service, I guess? Overall, this felt like a meh food court experience. I might be back again just cause I haven't seen many good phos around in the dt area yet. Apparently, they also have these pandan cake, which I might like to try next time. Steak and Eggs.

This is a solid joint to get some breakfast, I think. Granted, we only went there once for brekky but it was pretty good. I think this is in like the financial district or some crap, so there aren't too many breakfast places around, but this place is solid. We had some steak and eggs and bo kho with a banh mi. Also had some Viet coffee. The steak and eggs were nothing special, but for the price it wasn't bad. The bo kho was good though! Really beefy and the baguette was great! Nice and crispy and airy! The service was fine if inattentive hehe. Another customer came in while we were there and the owner was in the back I guess. The customer was standing there yelling "hello! Hello!" for so long, but it took the owner like 10 minutes to finally realize someone had come in lol. The owner is friendly though!

Spring Rolls
Adam C.

Pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of the food here. Owners were really friendly and kind too! But more of a 3.5/5 rather than a full 4. I was hungry so I got myself the spring rolls, a grilled sub filled with various meats, Vietnamese pancake, and chow mein with chicken. My favorite part of the meal was definitely the spring rolls. They were fried perfectly and melted in my mouth. I enjoyed the grilled sub but I felt the bread was a little excessive compared to the amount of meat stuffing inside. But whatever the dipping sauce is they give you with the spring rolls and pancake, it tastes incredible!! I definitely dipped every bite of my sub in that stuff. This was my first time eating a Vietnamese pancake and it was alright. The first few bites tastes exactly like eating the crispy skin of a chicken leg or something similar. It was good but as I continued eating, it just had too much noodles for taste and not enough of the meats which left me a little disappointed. The chow mein tasted great. Fresh chicken, freshly steamed veggies and noodles cooked just right. The downside to this dish though was the small amount of chicken and veggies compared to the large amount of noodles. Even if they only added 4 more pieces of chicken, I feel like the chow mein dish would of been more of a complete meal rather than feeling like a plate full of noodles with some veggies and some chicken pieces on top. Sort of a hit and miss on the entrees but you can't deny the quality and freshness of the food served here. With owners who are easy going to talk with and plenty of choices to pick from, I'd say it's worth stopping in. I'd eat here again and definitely try a few different dishes to get a more informed impression.

Spicy Chicken Wings

Never had turkey curry soup with noodles. Delish! Service was friendly and food came out piping hot. Bahn Mi sandwich and shrimp wonton soup combo was also good. Love the lemon sauce for the chicken wings. Very eclectic decor but felt very homely. They also have a breakfast menu for early risers.

Lemon grass chicken with vermicelli and spring roll
Kit Yee Y.

Downtown does not have a lot of Vietnamese restaurants. This one is considered a good one with reasonable pricing, good quality and many options. We love it. We ordered a bowl of spicy rice noodles and lemon grass chicken with vermicelli and a spring roll. Both dishes were great. The rice noodles were the round thick ones that we loved the firmness and texture of it. Only one critic about the spring roll from the vermicelli dish was that the size was small and there were only 3 pieces. The ambiance was okay. Space was quite big in the restaurant comparing to others. Customer service was average. It seems one of the servers didn't quite understand English or English as their second language. We had to repeat our orders and made sure she got it. Overall we had a great experience eating Vietnamese food in downtown. We would recommend to our friends and family to try it if they are in the neighbourhood.

Haven't been back in ages. But now that I work downtown, I can come here any time. There are not a lot of Vietnamese restaurants in downtown Vancouver. So came here for lunch with colleagues and I got a vermicelli beef and shredded pork. For some reason the vermicelli looks like giant noodles. Not what I expected. Meat is on the skimpy side. It is a bit more expensive than other Vietnamese restaurants because it is located in a prime location. So first thing is when you walk into the restaurant, you have to order your meal right away. Next is you have to go find a seat. Well if you want to beat the rush then come here before noon. Today, I had lunch at 11am and there are hardly anyone here. Overall, the food was decent. Not wow. My vermicelli beef came to $11.29 after tax. I think they overcharged me but I didn't say anything because its probably like less than $1.

Special beef pho with rare beef, brisket, and beef balls.

Service was good, friendly. The restaurant is the same as I recall, clean enough. A little cramped and the seating isnt too comfortable. Its really not a good place to hang out for a long time, but rather sit down, eat, and get out type of place. I had the lavender latte and the Tagine this time. Ive had it before and at least its pretty consistent. Ive tried several other things on their menu in the past too, all pretty solid 4/5. Nothing standout as so amazing to deserve 5 stars, but consistent and tasty. I did have a reservation which they charge $10/person for, purely for donation to a charity and does not contribute to your meal at all, and also nonrefundable. While I find this somewhat annoying, I dont blame them for doing this from a business standpoint. They always have a lineup so there is no shortage of customers for them. There is no reason they need to deal with the headache of a ton of reservations. On the flip side, they honoured my reservation in a very timely fashion and I bypassed the line, so props to them for doing that part right. If you have to park, then you may find street metered parking or use one of the nearby paid lots.
