Wow. What a nice surprise. Food was good and the drinks were exceptional. I like a good mole, and the mole inspired cocktail was the perfect combination. Came in with zero expectations because we walked in off the street. Even the leftovers were gone by morning. read more

Watch out, El Barrio Cantina and Panxa Cocina! Viaje is comin' in hot and making their mark in Long Beach! I was shocked to hear that the owner of Baja Fresh, which was here prior, decided to create a higher end restaurant to showcase Mexican food on another level. Mission accomplished! I made reservations on their website and indicated that it was for a birthday (mine and a friend's). They messaged back asking for the names of the birthday guests. We were taken by surprise to see our names printed on the menu when we got there! They have a creative list of cocktails, mostly mezcal-based and very well balanced. They also have a nice wine list, which features wine from Valle de Guadalupe (Mexico's wine country near Ensenada). My friends and I ordered the El Alegre, La Catrina and a glass of wine and loved them. For Entradas/starters, we got a handful of items as we were told the portions were fairly small. Ensalada del Col Rizada ($12): refreshing mix of kale, fennel, sweet beets, small, croutons and a zesty vinaigrette. It could have used a little more cheese on top, but it was enough to share with four people. Pulpo ($22): I have to order grilled octopus every time I see it on the menu and this one did not disappoint. Charred tender, smoky with chile and chorizo mixed with the potatoes made such a beautiful combination I've never had together. Empanada de Mariscos ($12): only comes with one, but the soft, fluffy, blue corn crust is filled with octopus, shrimp, crab and an avocado emulsion, artistically topped with colorful radishes, micro greens and flowers. Easily shared with two people and worth trying. Ceviche ($12): sent by mistake and gave it to us anyway, but we enjoyed the thick pieces of red snapper, marinade, avocado and thin house made chips it came with. Flautas de Barbacoa ($16): short rib in handmade corn tortillas, topped with crema and greens while dipped in consume. It comes with two, but I was content with just eating one. Entrees/Platos Fuertes: Róbalo con Almejas ($48) of Chilean sea bass, clams, squid ink rice and an amazing sauce - what an incredible dish!! Enchiladas Oaxaqueñas ($25): a little hard for me to taste the duck but it had a good amount inside. The black mole was slightly sweet and mild. Barbacoa de Cordero ($32): this was my least favorite, but it was still good. The lamb meat fell off the bone, but it was still a bit on the tough and salty side. Pollito de Leche ($24): Cornish hen was small, but roasted perfectly and the chipotle red wine sauce was divine. In fact, ALL of their sauces were flawless and so flavorful. They enhanced each dish and we couldn't get enough. For our birthday dessert, they served a few pieces of churros on a decorated plate with candles, which was cute and appreciated. I did see a pretty dessert served at another table, but we were actually really too full for dessert anyway. Overall, we were blown away by everything we had. Our server was very attentive and the ambiance was lovely yet, not stuffy. I will definitely be back! read more

An absolute gem! This place perfectly balances fancy vibes with a cozy atmosphere, and it's located in the ideal spot in Long Beach. The service was top-notch from start to finish, and to top it off, we were treated to complimentary tequila shots on the house during our visit (it was a bit ago, but still unforgettable!). We ordered the sopitos, and let me tell you--it was fricken delicious. There's something magical in the sauce they use; I still dream about it to this day. It's that good. I honestly can't wait to go back and relive that meal. Highly recommend Viaje for anyone looking for an elevated dining experience with incredible food and service! read more

Perfect for a date night where you're craving Mexican food. It's elevated so perfect for someone you're trying to impress. I always get the steak which comes with all the fixings for a taco ( homemade tortillas ‍)and the ceviche! It's the perfect amount for two people in my opinion, and it never misses! I've tried their tuna tostada which is sooooo delicious but it has a soy type flavor, which if I'm craving Mexican food I don't usually order, but it's very delicious nonetheless. The drink selection is also great with an emphasis on mescal if that's your jam! Give it a try ! read more

The atmosphere, food and the service is great. I don't mind tipping - what I don't like is when they suggest a minimum of 18%+ and then provide the calculated amounts on your bill and the math includes the tax portion. I find this abusive and it totally diminishes my willingness to be generous or appreciative. This practice of including the tax portion use to be the norm. A great many of restaurants I visit have corrected this practice. How can you justify including the tax amount in your calculations? In my opinion you have encouraged me to not patronize your business. read more

So what went well here at Viaje? Everything! True to its name, from the ambiance to the cocktails and entrées took me on a Journey to Oaxaca Mexico without boarding a plane. Just thinking of the MEZCALITO cocktail, the first one I had that night, I keep thinking how genius it is to pair mezcal with peach-habanero syrup and epazote (Mexican herb). So refreshing yet warmed me up inside. It was invigorating yet comforting drink all in one. They also had a drink called La Guayabera that was just recently made possibly that day that I visited. Spectacular drink, one that also has no rival anywhere in 100 mile radius. *CHILE RELLENO with octopus shrimp and mushrooms had an incredible intricate flavor and was not chewy since some octopus seems to be at times. *Enchiladas de pipian were filled with the right amount of meat. The softest and most flavorful short rib I've ever tasted. Chef's kiss. Don't be intimidated by the pipian sauce... it's something that's not commonly offered in Mexican restaurants since it takes a lot of ingredients to make. Basically it's made with a lot of seeds which adds protein and delicious complexity to the plate. Last but not least the Pollito con mole oaxaqueno. If you don't like mole, then this is what you should order. It's not like any mole you have come across. This plate in itself could honestly start at $150. The Cornish hen is the most moist chicken you'll ever have. The mole doesn't overpower the flavor in the chicken. You can distinctly taste the chicken and mole as it pleasantly combines in your mouth and creates an explosion of flavor unlike anything you ever tasted before. I feel like some moles are meant to just be tasted along with whatever other meat it comes with. SERVICE: me and my husband were treated as if we were guests in someone's house that had been waiting for us to arrive and satiate our hunger till me said no more! Such incredible hospitality like no other. Constantly making sure that we were enjoying our drinks and meal. I will say that I wasn't very happy with a drink and the server saw that and immediately recommended a different one which was really truly the winner. It made my day that he cared about my experience more than anything. Can't wait to visit Viaje again with friends read more

Love this place!! The ambiance is trendy and modern. In my opinion, they have the best cocktails on 2nd street (we've tried a bunch and they're all great, love the mezcal). Sometimes service is a tad slow, but they're usually busy. As far as food, I love the tortilla soup which comes deconstructed and poured at the table. Also love the salmon dish. The ceviche is also a must. honestly hard to go wrong. Can be somewhat pricey, but worth it. read more

Lovely newish addition to second street. This is right in my neighborhood so I've had the pleasure of dining here more than a few times since it's opened. I've had a great experience here every time. The food is so delicious, and the cocktails are also amazing as well. Service is top notch as well as the ambiance, so this is a great new addition to second street for some more upscale Mexican dining. My personal favorites are the tortilla soup, the shrimp, and braised rib taquitos, and also we just tried a shrimp and octopus tostada which was amazing! The salsa is also very tasty and actually spicy! For desert, definitely don't skip the churros if you like them. They are so fresh here and delicious. You can tell they take pride in making tasty elevated Mexican dishes here, and I'm so happy they opened right here on second street. read more

A nice Friday night dinner at Viaje. I've been wanting to try this place out for some time as I'm always walking or driving through Belmont Shores! It was pretty easy getting a table through Resy. Location: centrally located in Long Beach. There's plenty of parking in the back. Ambience: the place is dim lit, very intimate with a decent-sized bar area. The place, while small, has a small outdoor seating area as well as indoor tables which can be a little snug. Food: everything was delicious. From the appetizers (ceviche, sopes, octopus), to the arrachera (medium rare), everything was well prepared. Absolutely nothing negative to say! I am not much of a sea food person but the octopus and ceviche had a mouth-watery flavor without the fish-like taste. Drinks: they have beers on tap but most people go for the wine and Mezcal and mix drinks. Tepachito was fermented pineapple and mezcal drink that was quite good. Price: you get what you pay for. If you want to have a nice outing, this place is definitely worth it! Service was top-notch, all staff were friendly and owner walked a couple of times to check on our large Friday and was very nice and made the experience personalized for a coworkers anniversary. read more

My husband and I were exploring Long Beach when we saw Viaje and were intrigued. It did not disappoint! The service was great, the host was very friendly and our server Arturo was super kind and very attentive. Usually we are a little hesitant to eat at nicer restaurants ever since we had a baby, but they made us feel very welcome! As for the food, my favorite dish was the sopes de costillas. All dishes were amazing but I have to comment on the rice with plantains because it brought me right back to my childhood when my mom would make me plantains and rice for dinner. Overall, it was a great time and we would definitely recommend eating here. read more

Came to celebrate a birthday. Food was AMAZING, better than any other fine dining Mexican spot in the area. Loved the barbacoa flautas, and the pescada zadoreano (be aware of fish bones). Best dish in my opinion was the chile relleno. Rated 3 stars due to service being subpar. We were only 3 people, restaurant is small, and even then had to wave or ask for our server to check on us. Drinks were brought out 25 minutes after ordered and after appetizers came out. Had to ask for plates and just slightly inconvenient for the price point and type of restaurant. read more

Tried out Viaje on 2nd. Finally. Cocktails were excellent at $16/each. Tried the Paloma, the pepino margarita and the la condesa. Octopus and chorizo appetizer was delicious. He got the enchiladas and he raved about the mole. We were wiping the mole off the plate with the homemade tortillas when he finished. I got the skirt steak which was a lot larger than I was expecting and cooked perfectly. Overall pretty good but definitely on the pricier side. $200 for 2 people. I used to love coming here for the cocktails, but sadly, they're just not the same anymore. Now, it's basically a giant ice cube taking up the whole glass, leaving barely any drink. You can finish it in about three sips--it's more ice sculpture than cocktail. read more

Viaje was quite the culinary experience in the heart of Long Beach. My friends and I made reservations for dinner here and were very excited to order the unique variations of their cocktails, appetizers and entrees. The ambiance was dimly lit, an average tone of loudness with music playing, and intimate enough for dates but fun enough to go in groups. We felt very welcome from the beginning. I ordered La Condesa for my cocktails which was very refreshing and filled with a ton of flavor: PRICKLY PEAR-ORANGE BLOSSOM GIN, APPLE, CELERY, LEMON, SAGE, AQUAFABA, FLORAL BITTERS. It seems like a bit much, but I love my drinks to be a bit much. The gin was masked by the juices which made it easier to sip on. For appetizers, we dove into the spicy camarones and the ceviche. Both were excellent and we'd order them again - especially the juicy ceviche. They're not kidding when they mention spicy notably from the roasted salsa that came with the chips. The chips weren't your typical tortilla chips, and I wasn't the biggest fan of those. The guacamole was okay. The entrees my husband and I got were the 10 oz Arrachera and the branzino. My group had received all of their food except for mine, later realizing that a hiccup had happened in the kitchen which delayed my order. I eventually received it and my branzino tasted very good. It was more savory than lemony from what I normally prefer but the marination was good and flavorful and the side dishes of thinly sliced pickled onions, guacamole and fresh corn tortillas were delicious. I don't even like corn tortillas that much but I'm beginning to realize I like them fresh off the press like these were. The steak was absolutely delicious. One of the best I've tried and I'd come back just for that order. The pieces were thick, juicy and easy to bite. I cannot even begin to say what awful experiences we've had with steak in our past and very recent restaurant outings. We w err very pleased. The service by our waitress and the general manager Sergio were very kind. What I appreciate is that they acknowledged my order mishap and were transparent about wanting to make it right. I found that to be appropriate and I felt heard! I recommend this spot and would not mind visiting again. PARKING: It's a busy strip on 2nd, so you're best off parking on side streets or possibly parking structures if they're around read more

I stumbled upon this little GEM... let me tell you it's just so satisfying to be able to go to an authentic Mexican Elevated restaurant. I made reservations for my hubby and I and unfortunately I could not make it in time so I called and the hostess inform me not to worry she would just adjust our reservation time. Thank Goodness...Loved how accommodating they were. Coming up to the restaurant literally it just simple but yet elegantly placed. It was very minimalist yet it works for them. It was dimly lit very romantic, and you can tell the ambiance was just relaxed and the energy was calm. Our hostess took us to our table even asked us if we wanted outside or inside we decided to go for the outside. We did get greeted immediately and waters were brought over. We viewed the menus and drink menus yet they are a bit in the smaller print so if you don't have 20/20 vision bring your glasses. Dimly lit and small print do not go hand in hand. It was not busy so I was surprised that it took them a bit to come over and take our drink and appetizers order. Adrian our server did such a great job... attentive to detail ... keep up the great work!!! We definitely took a VIAJE into an exquisite flavors through their food. DRINKS: - pepino margarita=just simply great and refreshing it was garnished with a pepino (cucumber slice) and it had tajin on the rim. -viaje margarita= definitely tasted the tequila but perfectly shaken into a delicious drink. garnished with a lime and half salt and half tajin on the rim... (they asked us if we wanted either or and we asked to do both ) it actually gave it a different look. APPETIZER: -pulpo= it was perfectly cooked it came with a mash potato topped with chorizo never would I have thought of that but it was delicious. The chorizo was just perfect. The salsa they paired it with was great not to spicy but loved the smoky chile in it. The dab of guacamole was good extra creamy and lemony Main Course: -Salmon al pastor = WOW it was just wow.. the flavors left me speechless. It was not what I expected. Like I said I took a VIAJE into an explosion of amazing flavors to Mexico! -barbacoa de Cordero (lamb) = Portion was huge. I could not believe how big it was. It just came right off the bone. I was shoo-ken it was perfectly cooked. They definitely took their time with this. The sauce it came in was not as warm as I would have liked it to be but it worked. The veggies on the side where just so soft and great. THE BONUS PART WHERE THE HAND MADE TORTILLAS... you only get three but remember you want to get full from the meat and not the tortilla! Dessert: We got a CHURROS dessert let me tell you they were so fresh that I acutally compared them to Disney Churros due to how darn good they are. I can't wait to go back and take another VIAJE!! Everyone needs to take a viaje here immediately! I went with a friend at on a Thursday, and we loved EVERYTHING! The vibe is elevated but non pretentious lounge, and service was stupendous!! We sat at the bar, and not only were the barkeeps friendly but they also handmade an extra spicy habanero salsa just for me!!!! We had a mix of appetizers. My friend had the pulpo, which he rated as outstanding. Ceviche was very tasty with very fresh mahi and just the right amount of kick. The tacos dorados were hearty but were helped along considerably with the habanero salsa. The standout for me was the tetela de camaron- food for the Gods!!!
