I am very perplexed at the predominant negative reviews here. Maybe they've cleaned up their act? Anyhoo, I 've come here a couple of times pre-yelp and never experienced some of the comments. Today was the most recent visit. I like this location for a couple of reasons. One is that it is relatively close to where I live. Two, it is relatively quiet and not as busy as some of the others. Thirdly, they have an outside patio, and actual tables and chairs inside instead of benches like the Kits location (unless they've changed recently?), the only other location that I've been to. If you're looking for the worst burger experience in Vancouver, this is it. The "restaurant" was half empty at 6:30 on a Friday night, and there were four orders in front of us. We waited for over an hour for our burgers, which were served by an individual who was more preoccupied with listening to his music and playing with his phone, than preparing the food that was ordered. Beyond that, we paid over $65 for three burgers, two orders of fries and two beers. To add insult to injury, it took so long to get our food, that I actually went to McDonald's (around the corner at UBC) to get a cheeseburger for my son, which I brought back into Vera's because he was so hungry. Burgers here are of good quality, but this isn't exactly the best maintained store. Fries are almost always crispy, but something tells me that their ketchup is regularly kept in the sun. Most of the time, whenever I dine in here, the ketchup seems to have fermented, so a top tip for all of you is to ensure you don't slather your fries with ketchup... at least before you tested the ketchup. Aside from that, burgers are great, buns are well toasted, and bacon is almost always crispy. Service is friendly, though they sometimes don't do too well with time management, i.e. you could order a shake and you'd be done with your burger by the time you get it. Loyal Vera's fan here. More than a decade. Now, so disappointed. Vera's used to be my 2nd favourite burger chain. Now, its not even top 10. Burgers have gotten smaller, buns cheaper. Fries are good but very small portions compared to the overkill of a few years ago. We ordered a milk shake. They used to be old fashioned milk shakes now they are worse than McD's. Real milkshakes don't have crushed ice in them. Wow what a fall from grace! What happened? Did you cut ingredient quality due to the covid crunch? Did you franchise and some of the franchisees aren't getting the recipes? Please go back to the way you ran things a few years ago. The way Vera's is now, I think I'd rather go to Wendy's. read more

This is a nice little hamburger shop. Being so near the university, I expected it to be crowded (about 4:00 on a Friday afternoon), but it wasn't. The burgers certainly looked delicious on the menu, and by the prices, I expected as much. However, they were just ok. Not exactly warranting the $7 price...without fries. The chili was delicious and the poutine was ok. The service, was just fine and dandy. Oh and like others have mentioned, parking is expensive. read more

I'm on the record as a Yelper who doesn't like to dock stars for service. Yelpers tend to come down too hard on waitstaff. I've gone to many restaurants that have been dinged for shoddy service on Yelp, only to find that the staff are really doing the best they can under less-than-ideal circumstances. You really have to screw up - more than once, even! - for me to bring up service issues in a public forum. So maybe it's the depressive paranoia talking, but every time I wander into this Vera's - and hell, the burgers ain't bad and the fries are better than the campus Triple Os - I get these powerful open contempt vibes from the staff. Anybody else feel that? The burning glares from the cashier, the cooks who stand around in the open for 10+ minutes after you've given your order - man, this place is a hate pit! Slow and dirty, too. I think this place is actually more a 2.5 based on my experience but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt and giving it 3. I ordered the spicy chicken burger of which the description is written "chicken strips DRENCHED in hot sauce." THe hot sauce was merely squirted on. It was so not enough hotsauce-y action for this little Indian girl. Then he said it comes with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup etc... It had none of that. :( When I asked, they put it on there. Strangely enough, I made a point of coming to this particular Vera's yesterday, after working not far from here, mainly because of the negative reviews that I had read about it. I'll admit to being surprised at the comments both about the poor and slow service, as well as the (at best) mediocre food quality. I just HAD to find out for myself, after trying a Vera's burger for the first time for myself several days ago, and finding that it was the best burger chain restaurant burger that I have ever had. My take on this burger joint? Service: I called ahead about 30 to 45 seconds before actually arriving (I had a menu from my visit to the Vera's on Fraser Hwy), and placed an order for pick up. When I arrived, the cook was already putting my burger together. As the restaurant turned out to be almost empty (much to my surprise, as it was about 4 PM, right next to UBC), I told them that I changed my mind, and would have the burger there instead of taking it out. My burger, shake, and fries all arrived within five minutes, which I think was adequate. The shake was first, and was just a wee touch on the runny side (I like 'em super thick!), but it was a shake, and not a cup of chocolate moo. It was very chocolatey, but not overly sweet. If it had been a bit thicker, it would have been a five star shake, but even so, it was at least a four star shake - five for flavor, and three for thickness and texture. The burger was almost as good as the one I had in Surrey, but it's hard to be objective, as I had a BBQ burger this time, instead of a Vera Burger (can't remember if that's what it was called, but it was their standard burger) last time. But I had this one with the roasted garlic, and loved it. As with the other Vera's location I was at, the basket of fries was BIG, with a bit of salt, but not too much. I enjoyed them very much - not too soggy, not over cooked, and with the potato skins left on, the way they should be, at least for THIS kid! The service wasn't bad. It wasn't great, like "You made our day by paying us a visit today. Sure, they had other things on their minds, and I was just a stranger coming through the door, but while they didn't do a song and dance upon my arrival, they also didn't act like I was not welcome there. They were polite, and brought the food to my table in short order, so I cannot fault them for their service. I'd say it was three star service. But honestly, I wouldn't expect more than that for a burger joint. If you get better service at a burger joint, great! But it's probably because the person working there is just a very enthusiastic burger person ;-) 'nuff said. I'll pay this place a visit again if I'm in the area and craving a REAL burger. Next time I'll probably get a chilli dog or a Frank burger (wiener on a burger). One thing though: the parking here is crazy EXPENSIVE (like the burgers). A loonie bought all of 17 minutes! While running some errands we decided to stop for what we thought would be a quick burger, well it was a burger but it sure wasn't quick. We placed our order and managed to secure the last available table -which looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the beginning of the day. And then the wait began. We couldn't figure out what was taking so long until we realized that it was the cook that had been talking to a table of girls next to us for about 10 minutes. When our BBQ burger and Big Chick finally arrived they were mighty tasty but the accompanying fries and onion rings were greasy with a capital G. I think that the delay in receiving our order was an aberration but in the future I will probably pass on the greasy sides and just go with the burger which is abundantly filling. read more

This is no place to go if you are a vegetarian. Each menu option goes into graphic detail about how wonderful the ingredients are and drum roll for the veggie burger option..."its a veggie burger!" Okay, first, the positive: The burgers, despite not being what we'd ordered, tasted pretty good. And the price was good - $11 (inc. tax) for a burger and a pint of beer is a bargain. And now the negatives: Horrible, bizarre service. -When my girlfriend was ordering the man at the cashier literally walked away halfway through her order. Another worker then came up and she had to start again. -Shockingly slow. Albeit the place was busy but I watched as one worker stood by the beer taps for about 15 minutes, doing nothing, before he finally got around to it. The beer arrived long after both burgers. -The burgers were wrong. They included the things we'd asked for as extras, but had none of the "usual suspects" supposedly included in every burger (lettuce, tomato, ketchup etc) so while tasty they were very lacking. -When the beer finally came, I mentioned to the man that he'd got our burgers wrong. He barely reacted, and almost seemed like he was sulking as he walked off. And that was it - no apology, no offer of fixing the problem, no offer of a coupon, nothing. I was so annoyed by this I mentioned it again as we were leaving. PROS: Girlfriend liked her Baja Burger. Fries were probably the best part, very crispy. It was open on New Years Day (reason we ate here) Wi-Fi access around (not from the restaurant, some blood donation center close by) CONS: Spicy chicken seemed like fried chicken from the freezer, and RedHot (I could have made it myself) Honey mustard looked like some jelly, bubbly substance. I went to Vera's yesterday for a very late lunch after spending 2 hours writing my exam at school in Burnaby and spending another hour to get to UBC for a convention. By the time I got to Vera's was around 4, so the place was almost empty. I ordered the frank burger, which is a burger with a sausage, cheese, and onions, along with the fries and pop. I cannot imagine what the place is like when it's crowded because it took quite a while to get the food, roughly about 10-15 mins. For a burger joint, that's pretty slow. The burger itself was ok, nothing spectacular. The patty felt a bit dry and the sausage was ok, but I felt that I could get it anywhere. The fries on the other hand was actually pretty good. Hot and crispy! The price....$14-something. Really expensive considering the burger wasn't that great. read more

October Review: 7/30 I'd probably rate Vega's a general a 3/5 but the once at UBC has been consistently crappy for years. They always overcook the meat, they take forever, and they just aren't worth the premium prices that they charge. If you are there and you feel like a big burger then it's fine but you can definitely do better. read more

Am I the only one who can't stop snickering at the double entendre in Vera's slogan "You can't beat Vera's meat?" Well, even if I'm not, they left me kind of underwhelmed -- possibly because everybody was telling me how great they were and how amazing their burgers were. They were good, solid burgers at UBC's franchise, anyway; not greasy, nice portions, friendly staff... but I wasn't wowed or anything. But I'd definitely pick Vera's over other any fast food joint, as their burgers are good and their toppings are obviously fresh. read more

Gross. I don't get the hype. I find Vera's burgers to be HUGE, PRICEY and TASTELESS. Compare this to, say, Pourhouse's chuck burger. Before you say, well Pourhouse is a real restaurant, keep in mind that Vera's is supposed to be the hamburger specialist. I suspect that Vera's burgers would be better if the buns were better. The burgers are great! Try the double Canuck with fried mushrooms and onions if you're really hungry! The french fries are really good especially if you dip them into their hot sauce! I only came here because it was my birthday and they gave me a coupon and I was hungry. I ordered the nature burger and it was a bit dried out, but that's pretty common for Vancouver burger places. Apparently it's against the law to cook a decent burger. That's not the case in Toronto, where I'm from, so I'm used to getting burgers medium rare. So, this place, like others, overcooked the burger. Organic beef tends to have less fat so maybe they weren't aware of what they were doing. Anyhow, I'd come back with another free burger coupon on my birthday, and maybe another time. They're decent for Vancouver and I think it's great they offer an organic option. read more

Decent burgers, but the past few visits I got soggy, stale fries. I forgive though cause their patties are gigantic, juicy, and delicious. Service has improved. Well, at least it's better than McDonald's. I love Vera's. When I'm with friend's who want to go out for burger's, i don't have to poo poo the idea because I don't want to go for a greasy, fatty meal, I always suggest Vera's because I have the option of both a turkey burger or a veggie burger.
