This was my favorite lunch spot during our visit to Black Mountain! Loved the homemade soup (tomato, feta, basil) and sandwich combo.

We stopped off at the Veranda for lunch while we were in Black Mountain this past weekend. The menu seemed interesting and the prices were reasonable. They also seemed fairly busy, but without a wait, which I consider a pretty good sign on a dreary Saturday. We had a very sweet and attentive server and I do feel like she went out of her way to be sure we were taken care of. My friend had the turkey wrap and is STILL going on and on about how wonderful it was. I had the shrimp and grits, which were OK, but a little disappointing as I considered them kinda bland. The restaurant had lots of hot sauces to choose from, which is always a plus in our book. I think we would definitely go back again when we're in Black Mountain. read more

Nice place with good service in downtown Black Mountain. Very dog friendly... they gave us a table on the back patio and had us walk our dog right through the restaurant. Our party of 4 got 4 sandwiches, ranked in this order: - Bavarian pretzel club- delicious ham, bacon, gouda, spicy mustard on pretzel roll. Awesome - Caprese panini- Good quantity of mozzarella melted into grilled panini bread - Muffaletta- Small-ish version of the sandwich, a bit dry but good flavors - Asian chicken wrap- nothing special, and wrapped poorly so didn't hold up. Not bad but I'd definitely skip this on a future trip. Sides were mixed- the sandwiches come with chips. Place like this should have housemade chips, but these were straight from a bag. Fortunately you can also select a coleslaw or a couple salads for no additional charge so definitely would recommend that. read more

I had a half sandwich of turkey on cranberry bread with a mango dressing, a cup of tomato feta basil soup which was unbelievably good, and a side of mixed vegetables in a vinegar sweet sauce which was delicious. My favorite lunch place. read more

This may be the better of the lunch restaurants in the historic district of Black Mountain. However, the Veranda Cafe has no veranda: Discuss. It has a back deck, which gets mysterious blasts of very hot air, so it's not as pleasant as you expect. The dining room is nice but feels crowded. The food is very good, though. The restroom situation is borderline: two single-seat unisex restrooms. read more

In Black Mtn for an extended stay and this was our first stop for lunch. Good crowd and was seated after a 10 min wait and it was worth every min. Wife had the turkey cranberry peninie and she said it was yummy. I had the chalkboard special... "Truck yard" pulled pork Korian BBQ tacos and I was pleasantly surprised and they had a nice spicy kick to them as one would expect. The tacos came with coconut rice but it was closer to just steam rice. Don't get me wrong... I was more than satisfied with the three flour tacos that were stuffed to the gills with tender pulled pork. We will definitely be back!! read more

Very cute and well-kept in a great location. I got the hummus and Indian summer salad. Hummus was great but Indian Summer salad was far too sweet, and my boyfriend agreed. He got the Cuban sandwich and loved it. Not vegan friendly. read more

Stop what you're doing, change your plans, rearrange the schedule, do whatever it takes to eat lunch here!! Best soup, sandwich, blue plate special joint on the planet. The crab soup was so good we ordered another cup. The chilled strawberry soup was extremely refreshing. I got the muffaletta sandwich and my wife got the roast beef panini with au jus and horseradish mayo. Everything was EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT. Another nice touch is the outdoor dog friendly deck. One local told us they eat here 4 times a week and his advice was whatever menu item sounds delicious, get it because it will be. Also, every 5 minutes a local was hugging a waitress with smiles and laughter. My kinda place!! And the people are SO NICE! For my wife, who grew up in NJ, the Southern Hospitality here is nothing short of awesome. The sweet ending was the brownie with ice cream and caramel. Superb ending to a heavenly lunch. Super nice staff, but they put us at a table right under an air conditioner outside. It was comfortable temp out doors, but not on the patio with the hot from the kitchen a/C exhaust. Besides, they had us walk through the kitchen to get to our table. They should not have those tables on the patio, but probably wanted to make extra money. One of our favorite lunch spots in the Asheville area. Some of the best homemade soups I've ever had. Make sure you try a sample or two of the daily special soups when you go in (seriously, I could eat them all, except the potato which is just a personal preference.) Also, the sandwiches are very good. I had the special of the day the firecracker (turkey and pepper jack melted on ciabatta with caramelized red onions, bacon, and special sauce), and it was sinfully delicious. We are visiting the area for the month because we will be moving here soon- The sandwich I had today at Veranda Cafe sealed the deal. We can't move here soon enough!! Maybe the best sandwich ever, certainly within the top 5 of my life. I got the panini sandwich with turkey, Brie and cranberry something- I got it with no mayo bc in my opinion, mayo is gross- even tho there's was "cranberry Mayo". The sandwich was perfection. Very disappointed with changes to the signature she crab soup recipe. There were only two tiny pieces of crab in the bowl and more cartilage than meat. The previously super creamy broth is now a pale impersonation. We would come 2 hrs. from Charlotte, but this will no longer be a dining destination. read more

Loved it!! My party fully enjoyed their meals here today. We had a Cuban, French dip and a club. The sandwiches were outstanding. The Cuban, let me say that I'm from Miami area and I eat Cubans almost every week. It was excellent, pressed and filled with finely sliced meat and cheese and tangy crunchy pickles. Served with a perfect mojo sauce and chips. The club was served on toasted sourdough and stuffed with thick bacon slices and piles of turkey and ham. Delish!! The French dip was served on a lovely roll and the sauce wasn't overly salty. We also had the soup which was creamy potato, very very good. I would return here just for more of the flavored teas. Located in charming Black Mountain on Cherry Street, downtown. The place gets crowded fast for lunch, so try to get there early. They serve amazing sandwiches, deserts and soups. I opted for the tuna sandwich and the Hungarian soup. Super tasty. Highly recommend you visit it you're in the area. Service also is outstanding. read more

A friend and I had lunch on August 6 at the Veranda Café, which is only open for lunch Monday through Saturday. The website guarantees the best lunch in town and I am now a believer. The Veranda serves "simple, Southern fare" made from scratch daily, including six soups and daily specials, and is also a pet-friendly restaurant. In fact, we sat outside on the patio beside a couple with their two well-behaved dogs. Both my friend and I decided to have a cup of soup - me the conch chowder and him rice and beans - and for the main course, we both had one of the daily specials, the Charleston-style shrimp and Gouda cheese grits topped with bacon and shredded cheese. While near Black Mountain for six days, we ate lunch at Verandas for 5 of them. Why go anywhere else. The gourmet soups are to die for. St. Lucian Calliloo (coconut milk based, lump crab meat, and other happy ingredients) was my favorite. EVERYTHING is superbly done, including the desserts! Disappointed! We made a special trip to come here as a friend of ours who was with us had eaten here before and recommended it. Well this visit according to her was not anything like she had previously experienced. To start with the daily special offerings were not appealing to any of us today. The menu is limited to basically to a variety of sandwiches. But the real problem was in the wait staff, our waitress took our order and did not mention that we had a choice of sides and when we she turned around to go to kitchen and came back we ask her didn't we get a choice of sides she said yes but since you didn't say anything about them you get chips we then told her our preferred sides, she was obviously irritated with us, and when she brought our food out she still was basically rude to the extent that I still received the chips even though I had requested a different side I did definitely not want to inconvenience her any further...we waited again for our waitress she had disappeared..her name was Katy S...she never returned finally another waitress refilled our drinks, after we finished our meal we again waited and waited our waitress did not show back up? We asked another waitress for our tickets she did not look pleased that we asked her..said our waitress would bring..again we waited , our waitress never did come back the waitress that had previously been asked came back with our ticket...the food wasn't bad but since the wait staff do not want you there I would not recommend this place and I rarely write bad or mediocre reviews...too many places in Black Mountain that offers good food and hospitality...... read more

Veranda Cafe is our favorite lunch spot in Black Mountain. They always offer at least five different housemade soups, plus a variety of sandwiches and salads. My favorites include potato soup, Hungarian mushroom soup, the chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, the hot turkey berry brie sandwich, and the Bavarian pretzel club (ham, bacon, smoked gouda, and Lusty Monk mustard). My wife and I hit Black Mountain on Black Friday and wandered into Veranda for lunch. Best whim ever. I had a brilliant pimento cheese sandwich and a very good baked potato soup. My wife got a marvelous turkey, cranberry, brie sandwich we're adding to our home menu and the best mushroom soup I've eaten. Our first visit to Black Mountain and we were greeted with such warmth and excitement when the lovely staff saw our two pugs! We sat out on the porch in the back and were promptly brought our iced tea and a bowl of fresh water for the dogs. The Asian Chicken Salad Wrap was fresh and flavorful with moist chunks of chicken.
