Probably one of the best burgers I've ever had! On our way to Asheville/Weaverville and decided to stop at Black Mountain for dinner. This place kind of stood out as a local favorite so we thought we give it a shot. Wait was pretty long and had people just kind of milling around on the sidewalk outside, but it was worth it. Staff was friendly and very attentive. I had a blue cheeseburger, and it was fantastic! It was the standard burger with blue cheese added, and a side of french fries. We also got an appetizer order of the onion rings, which were equally amazing! Highly recommend! This is going to be our go to pitstop between Charlotte and Asheville from here on out! read more

The staff seemed a little distracted.. I was seated on a platformed area with one of the seats on the edge of a short set of stairs, where I had to be very conscious to not adjust my chair at all for fear of tumbling backwards... This restaurant was recommended on Bring Fido and highly rated on yelp, so we thought we'd give it a try. Good choice! A variety of delicious foods I wanted to eat and good drinks. My husband had the special, which was a Cajun dish with crawfish and andouille sausage over cheesy grits, and I had jambalaya and the famous onion rings. Everything was delicious and very reasonably priced. Jackson, our waiter, was friendly and efficient and brought our dogs water right away. The restaurant was crowded and had a little bit of a wait on a gorgeous Thursday night, but the wait and was worth it, and we will come here again. Second time at The Trailhead, and both were great experiences. We sat at the bar as we usually do when it's an option. The bartender described some of the local beers that we were not familiar with and took our order quickly. The grilled chicken sandwich was juicy and flavorful and the fries were cooked to a golden brown, just the way I like them. Ambience was "bar casual" with a mix of locals and out-of-towners. Dropped into this cool little downtown hot spot after a long day of hiking & exploring the nearby areas. Given that it was 4th of July weekend we expected a bit of a wait but were pleasantly surprised at the quick seating & prompt, friendly attention from the wait staff. The inside is a bit of an echo chamber but they do a great job of spacing the table out so there's not much reverb & unintentional eavesdropping of nearby people. To start with an appetizer we tried the Black Mountain Chili which came with chives, sour cream & a melted layer of cheese. Fantastic way to start the meal as the chili was decadent & delicious! For entrees we tried the Trailblazer which is a 1/2 pound angus burger with their house made slaw, bacon, caramelized onions, & cheddar cheese topped with garlic mayo. I was slightly jealous that my better half ordered this one and I didn't as this was one of the better burgers i've had in awhile. At the price point of $11 it's really a great value for the burger. I myself tried the Linville Falls which is a fried chicken breast which is pickle-brined, topped with lettuce, tomato & provolone on a toasted Brioche bun. You have the option to toss the chicken breast in one of their house-made wing sauces. On the server's recommendation I tossed it in the Sweet Asian sauce & that decision was a good one. Started with Beer Pickle Spears which are Ale Battered with homemade ranch. Very good..not too greasy. Also tried The Gully Creek which were 2 grilled Mahi Mahi seasoned with Jerk sauce topped with Mango Salsa,Caribbean Slaw and cilantro served with black beans and chips. If you're not a local, don't even bother. We are in from out of town on vacation. Had scrappy service the last time we came in May 2024. Bartender kept talking about how much she hates customers. We thought things might be better 2 years later. Nope. We were seated...waited 10 minutes and then saw a group of 4 seated next to us who were waited on immediately...because they were locals. Great find in Black Mtn.! Chose "The Trailhead" for dinner after seeing all the positive reviews. There was a 30 min wait at 7 pm on a Saturday night but the time went by quickly while we sat & people watched outside on the benches along the street. Once inside our server, Heather, was SUPER attentive and gave great menu suggestions as well as information about the area which we appreciated. EVERYTHING we ate was DELICIOUS...freshly made and locally sourced. Love that! We started with onion rings & fried pickles. So glad I ordered the special of bone in pork chop w/ an apple bourbon compote, goat cheese sweet potatoes (my fav) a. I tasted my daughter's fish and chips and it was some of the best I've had. My husband had the ham & bean soup and son's had the chicken sandwich & fried chicken breasts w/ corn pudding & steam kale. I know it does not look like much but this is a good place. Unless you get here early expect to wait in line and there is not a lot of room to wait inside. This location has a great vibe... just a local fun spot with good food and wonderful people. It feels like everyone here is just happy... and the business is humming. A local and tourist place... but this is a small town and although there are options there are not enough to support all the people at tourist time. We had a bunch of aps some drinks, and meals here . The whole time there were people just waiting to get in. The food was good... the service was good and the atmosphere was fun. In my experience there's a requisite 25 minute wait despite empty & readied tables. It might be named The Trailhead but if you're coming off one of the local mtn trails with an appetite don't stop here. Got the fish & chips. Fish was haddock, plentiful & perfect. "Chips" were just soggy thin cut fries that could've come from McDonalds a couple hours previously. (Chips are thick cut & not soggy.) It was impossible to get my server's attention up until I approached her for more tartar sauce & a drink refill. Ambiance is good, music just right, but it's not worth the wait when you're expecting to eat within 40 minutes. The bar staff was totally attentive & getting things done. Wow this place was packed! If you want any chance of getting a table without having to wait I'd recommend coming early. My family and I came around 5 and even though there were tables available we still had to wait about 10 minutes because the kitchen needed 10 minutes apparently. The waitress was friendly however the food took an hour or longer to arrive. I ordered the looking glass salad which ended up being pretty disappointing. The tuna portion was very small and the meat itself was lukewarm and chewy. The food was decently priced but I think the quality could've been a lot better. I tried a few bites of the salmon cakes and those tasted alright, but the salad was just not good. With the long wait and subpar meal I was overall kind of disappointed with The Trailhead. My husband had to try the deep fried pickle appetizer which he enjoyed. I asked the server for gluten free options and she was very helpful. When she said they get their gluten free buns made in an Ashville bakery I ordered the Beacon Heights sandwich. It was a BLT with avocado and a special sauce and the best gluten free sandwich I've ever had.
