I got the Smokehouse Burger without cheddar, jack cheese, a pickle, or crispy onions (consisting of BBQ sauce, brisket, and my personal addition of feta) on a GF bun with tots. Nothing particularly spectacular, but beggars can't be choosers when it is late and you want to sit down to eat with 14 people! My chicken fingers were acceptable. Friends in west Ashe love Universal Joint and we were hoping too as well. The patio looked appealing but it was buggy the afternoon we went so decided to eat indoors. They have a nice variety of beers on tap and a decent menu. Friends raved about the burgers so I followed their lead. Unfortunately, my med/med-well came out very well done and rock hard. Eh. This joint is a mixed bag. My burger was decent but overall the food was so so. The oil they were frying in was fishy and old. The chips were stale. The fries are not so good. Universal Joint in in West Asheville for lunch today. Usually, I get something lighter like the fish tacos, but today, I tried the California Burger and did not regret it one bit. I appreciate a good smash burger, but I gotta say, a nice well-seasoned and well-cooked thick patty burger really does hit the spot sometimes! Nice ripe avocados, grilled onions, bacon, monterey jack cheese and a spicy sweet sauce with just enough kick. All on a soft brioche/egg bun. The fries were fresh and crisp and service was friendly, prompt and warm! My husband said he couldn't stop thinking about that burger Every time we've been there, the bartender has been very accommodating and on top of things. This is a fun burger and beer place with outdoor seating in west Asheville. We came here with the kids because I heard that they had chalk and drawing space for the kids. They do, although it's not exactly close to most of the outdoor seating. My daughter did enjoy drawing for a bit. They offer a bunch of local beers. I tried a Sierra Nevada sour beer, and it wasn't too sweet, which was nice. My husband had an IPA, which he thought was okay. We started with the queso and dip and edamame to start. They came out quickly, which was a relief since the kids were hangry. For my main, I had the smoked trout reuben. it was pretty good. Smoked trout tends towards dryness, and the sandwich could have used more cheese or dressing to help with that. But the flavors worked well. The bread could have been toasted a little longer. My husband had a basic burger. The kids ordered off the kids menu, and they were pleased. They have a pay jukebox, and my husband put in $10 of credits, only to find out that there are no outdoor speakers. Oops. There isn't a ton of parking nearby other than the pay lots. read more

This place is awesome!! We came after a long day of travel and were starving. A really great waitress in a long green kimono type shirt took care of us and she was incredible! Super hard working! UJ was a great local find just around the corner from our AirBNB. We saw a long line outside the night we arrived in town, and knew it was a must-try before we left. We got in for dinner on a Sunday evening fairly quickly, though it took awhile for us to order drinks and food at first. We ordered the UJ Burger and the Universal Fries, both of which were very good! I also ordered a Moscow Mule and it was so well-made with just the right proportions of lime, ginger beer, and vodka. We decided to find somewhere with a good burger. We found This place which had Bison Burgers. My husband and I both ordered Bison Burger I ordered mine the old school way with just cheese, Mayo, onion and pickle. My husband ordered his the breakfast way with cheese, bacon and fried egg with fries. Both were good burgers. He drank a local craft beer from Hi-Wire Brewery local to the area and I drank a Tart Cherry Cider. It was late at night and I didn't get to take many pictures at this restaurant. They are pretty pricey for what they are but the food is decent pub food and the service is nice. The music can be a bit loud and the light dim but I appreciate the outdoor patio when it's warm. They have good veggie options. I like the salad and veggie burger made in house. Pretty decent alcohol prices compared to the area so I cannot complain about that. read more
