I had such a great lunch here with the girlfriend and her fam. I had a turkey pesto sandwich with a side of Mrs. Charleston crab soup. Would I eat that sandwich again? Absolutely! Would I eat the soup again? I would swim in that stuff if it wouldn't get me kicked out. We had a pleasant lunch at the Veranda. The cafe is clean and they are taking obvious COVID mitigation steps with employees wearing masks, wiping everything down, tables spaced out. Very disappointed with the mushroom soup & blackberry sage iced tea but more so the service! Tried the tea & besides being so full of ice there was barely a few sips it wasn't very good. When asked if I'd like a refill I asked if I could have it replaced with lemonade sage drink listed next to each other in menu. Not only was I charged for the one that was distasteful but the new one which was $4.00 vs. other one at $2.85! i realized this when received the bill so stopped drinking it & when asked for one of the charges to be removed, the waitress argued & then grabbed the drink away even touching me in the process. We were on our way out of Asheville, eastbound and ready for lunch. This cafe popped up as a great vegetarian option, and after a review of the menu, we reset the GPS for Black Mountain (first time visiting). What a sweet cafe with a menu that is purely southern. I especially liked that we could sign in and then visit the adorable shops next door until our cell phone rang to tell us our table was ready. I was very clear that I had recently had dental surgery and could eat ONLY VERY purified soups. I asked if the potato soup was creamy and I was told it was. It was VERY chunky and so as not to make a fuss I mashed the chunks with my fork. When the waitress came to ask how everything was I asked if they have a blender as (I repeated) I had dental surgery. She snapped at me....I told you the Tomatoe was creamier. I'm allergic to tomatoes, My daughter, who is in the restaurant industry and NEVER criticizes services was appalled at how she spoke to me. This was NOT my imagination as when I went to pay I asked the cashier if she was the owner. She was. I asked if the server was her daughter...She was. I said, she has a bit of an attitude. HER REPLY WAS WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE ONE I WILL NEVER FORGET.... Maybe she had a reason.....WHAT?!?!?!? REALLY?!?!? I then asked what I had done that she thinks I deserved to be spoken to rudely. She started to talk about how I asked if the soup could be creamier.....I took out a temporary denture and said. Perhaps I had a reason as well....She NEVER came back to apologize profusely which is what someone in her position should have done.....The soup was VERY mediocre with pieces of onion skin and tough pieces. Probably the best chicken and rice soup I've had. And the half Turkey Brie & cranberry chutney (minus mayo, none of these sandwiches need mayo as the flavors alone are divine!) was mouthwatering and warm and delightful. Don't pass up the chance to eat here. It's the quintessential mountain town cafè with surprisingly good food and service. When we stopped in we were seated immediately. We tried 2 of their soups, (1) buffalo bleu chicken stew and (2) black eye pea and ham, and both were so so good. We had salads and the roast beef sandwich - both recommended but the roast beef is a must try. Last but not least, ask which deserts they made in house and then order one. We had a chocolate raspberry cake that was home made and it was worth the extra calories. Next time we're in black mountain we will definitely be back. read more

Favorite Black Mountain haunt for tourists--fun! A good restaurant but, with a few tweaks, could be truly great. They excel at soup--yesterday we had a truly excellent Hungarian Mushroom soup and split pea, both superb. But this is also where better ingredients could make for a much better meal. I had the pimento cheese on multi-grain bread, which was a tasteless, overtoasted few slices of which I am convinced was Arnold multi-grain bread from Sam's Club. Pimento cheese great; presentation and bread, not so great. This ruined the sandwich, truly. Salads are the standard commercial salad mix, nothing too exciting. Service good but plating and table service not so great--plates too small (I'm not talking the food, but the actual plate) and spoons placed down into ice tea glasses instead of on a separate plate all make this less than five-star. They should partner with a good bakery for some artisan bread. A bit of table snobbery going on as well--names put on a wait list, you wait for your table but, after they called my name and my friend still en route, owner insisted that I wait until my friend arrived before getting the table. While I waited, I saw numerous people walk in and catch up with their parties who were already seated. When I was finally the lone person sitting, the owner said, "now it's not so busy and you can go ahead," but at that point I decided to wait it out. Friend arrived and we were seated at possibly the worst table in the whole room, near the restrooms, despite a nearly empty dining room at that point. I'm all for efficiency in restaurants and have eaten and written about them all over the world (not for Yelp, but as an actual food critic for magazines including Bon Appetit). I have never experienced this in my life. Dessert was Key Lime pie-- probably not house made, we planned to share and it arrived with (perhaps predictably) two spoons on one tiny plate. The bottom line? The soups are exceptional; handmade entrée salads are good (chicken salad, pimento cheese, something called Texas caviar, etc.), salad greens and mixes very run of the mill, breads terrible, plating less than what you'd expect at even a Denny's. Come for the ambiance and the hand-made desserts. Just make sure you all arrive on time. read more

I'm a local but won't be going back to Veranda's. I ordered the Cuban sandwich. It's supposed to be a hot sandwich but was lukewarm at best. My wife ordered the Veranda ham sandwich with pimento cheese. Again, her food was cold. I also had coffee. On the first refill I asked for some creamer. It took three trips before she remembered. Went here for lunch on a Saturday around 2 and this place was packed. I got the french dip and it was excellent. High quality roast beef with a delicious horseradish sauce. Came with slaw and chips. Also got a side salad that was fresh and delicious with beautiful dark greens. I had to wait a while and they threw in a cookie. That was delicious and homemade as well. I absolutely adored this place! We stopped in for lunch on a whim (which normally I like to have done my research) so I was glad this place turned out to be so amazing. It is hard to explain why just a simple lunch wrap got me so excited but the quality was so good and you can just tell they really put effort into everything they do. I tried the asian chicken wrap. The wrap was perfect in texture--soft and fresh. The chicken was not too dry and it wasn't slimy or salty. It was fresh, plump white meat. The balance of veggies was done perfectly and the ginger sauce was not over-powering nor did it make the bread soggy. The side I chose was a cold veggie/vinaigrette salad. It was amazing. We all enjoyed our sandwiches so much that we all ordered another sandwich to go so we could have it for dinner later. I ordered the caprese panini and it was awesome! Everything was so fresh! The cafe itself is just adorable. The decor was fun and trendy. They sold baked goods, cards, tshirts and other fun items. The service was good but it does take a little longer---probably due to the fact that everything is made fresh! The only problem with this place is that they are not open longer and are not open on Sunday's. I tried to return the next day but they were closed! :( Definitely check them out!! read more

They also seemed fairly busy, but without a wait, which I consider a pretty good sign on a dreary Saturday. We had a very sweet and attentive server and I do feel like she went out of her way to be sure we were taken care of. My friend had the turkey wrap and is STILL going on and on about how wonderful it was. I had the shrimp and grits, which were OK, but a little disappointing as I considered them kinda bland. Nice place with good service in downtown Black Mountain. Very dog friendly... they gave us a table on the back patio and had us walk our dog right through the restaurant. Our party of 4 got 4 sandwiches, ranked in this order: - Bavarian pretzel club- delicious ham, bacon, gouda, spicy mustard on pretzel roll. Awesome - Caprese panini- Good quantity of mozzarella melted into grilled panini bread - Muffaletta- Small-ish version of the sandwich, a bit dry but good flavors - Asian chicken wrap- nothing special, and wrapped poorly so didn't hold up. Not bad but I'd definitely skip this on a future trip. Sides were mixed- the sandwiches come with chips. Place like this should have housemade chips, but these were straight from a bag. Fortunately you can also select a coleslaw or a couple salads for no additional charge so definitely would recommend that. read more
