I will begin by saying that I am NOT a vegetarian or vegan and neither is anyone in my family. A friend of ours is a vegetarian and asked us to find a place that served no meat for our recent lunch date... in comes Yelp and Veggie Today. I have never tried a faux meat dish and honestly did not know what to expect but was so pleasantly surprised when the vegan chicken stir fry came out- we paired ours with white rice. Our friend ordered the potato curry with brown rice. Everything was delicious. The first thing I did was dive into the chicken because I needed to know if this was my new jam- heck yes! It was so good, thin, and crispy! My husband is somewhat of a picky eater and he also liked it! It was made so well, seasoned well, and just delicious. Would we come back? Yes! While some of you may find this review out of place, as I am very much a person who enjoys his meat, there is a backstory to how I happen to be trying out a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. Typically when someone who is very much a carnivore winds up somewhere like this, naturally, the reason is that there is someone else the person who is dining with that has such a food restriction. This was certainly the case here. Of course, Veggie Today isn't just a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, but it's a Vietnamese style vegetarian/vegan restaurant. So there is of course the typical stuff you'd find in the cuisine, such as Pho, spring rolls, rice plates, and many other things that are usually there. Included are also lots of dishes that are also closer to Chinese cuisine, which the lunch menu was filled with. Lots of dishes such as the Mongolian "Beef", or "Chicken" Curry, and other "meat" dishes. If you don't understand the purpose of the quotes, they are meant to mention the fact that this restaurant does not actually have any real meat dishes, as they supplement the meat with things like tofu, curd, and etc to make it seem like real meat. The price for lunch was very much affordable, as it was just under $7 per person, which included the entree with rice, or brown rice (add a dollar), and you get a pretty hefty portion of food, so not bad at all. I ordered the Mongolian "Beef", and my friend got a "Chicken" dish. The Mongolian "Beef" was certainly interesting. While they did a pretty good job trying to mask the fakeness of the "meat", it certainly is nowhere near as good as many have mentioned when saying it feels like they're eating real meat. Trust me, for a guy that almost exclusively eats meat, it's definitely not the same. That's not to say it didn't have its own interesting texture, while not meaty, but gives you something a bit more than just feeling like you're eating vegetarian or vegan. So props to them on a good job with that. There were also lots of other things in the dish, to be expected, like peppers, onions, and other things you'd expect in a veggie dish. Now, it's not that I don't like eating vegetarian, or vegan, because as long as it tastes good, I am more than down for it. This is where the dish gets a bit muddled. The sauce that they used for the Mongolian "Beef" was a bit too sweet. Of course, I'm not an expert on vegetarian or vegan cuisine, but I know that you can get much more flavor into a dish such as this, especially if it's trying to mirror a Chinese dish. Just had a hard time getting over the overly sweet profiles that was overwhelming the saltiness of the dish. It almost feels like as if it was there to mask the flavors to remind me that I'm not actually eating meat. Again, it's not that the meat was bad, but it just felt like all of the different components on this dish was disorientating, and not as delicious as I was hoping for. It was okay, but certainly not great, or something I'd go out of my way to have. In the end, the place wasn't bad, and certainly a place that I can imagine vegetarians or vegans would enjoy. My dining partner enjoyed the dish they had, so that's probably a good indicator to me that maybe I just didn't enjoy it as much because I just didn't feel satisfied at the end of the meal. The place itself is nice, clean, and convenient as it's right across the theater on the side street. The service there was okay. Price was very comparable for lunch. And food was just okay for me, but again, I don't eat vegetarian or vegan too often, so maybe the flavors I was getting I'm just not used to it. I do want to stress one thing though, and that's the fact that the "meat" they had is nowhere close to real meat, so for those who are in a similar position as me, and wants to go to a place that will cater to another's diet needs, don't go in expecting it to be a feast of meat. It's certainly interesting, and different, and not bad, but, it's not meat, and there is no chance of ever convincing me as such. read more

Tried some legit dishes with a ton of menu items under $7!!! String beans with tofu in garlic sauce. Flavors were delicious. I just need to remember to say not spicy for my kids. It was rather mild but my kids felt it was spicy towards the end. A bowl of brown rice only +$1. Curry noodle soup was delicious, curry broth with big lemongrass flavors! Gave very little noodles. But I had ordered it to go so I was able to easily add some broccoli and more veggies to it at home. They did provide enough broth. Egg roll vermicelli bowl was good and as expected. Open again! They were closed for awhile because of covid. They just recently reopened again. Food is as always delicious! Went for two of our staples, the beef pho and the thai fried rice. Highly recommend the lemongrass tofu, salt and pepper shrimp and spicy noodle soup. Wouldn't recommend the mongolian beef, as it doesn't have much flavor. Super duper sweet staff! Quality food. I'm so happy to have stumbled across this place. My boyfriend and I ordered 4 entrees so that we could get the free appetizer and every single plate was so flavorful and filling. The gentleman serving us was very sweet and welcoming and understood my concern for only wanting vegan dishes. He assured me that the only food item on the menu that wasn't 100% vegan was the wonton soup or the wonton appetizer.. So anything wonton. And that was totally fine with me. I totally forgot I had bookmarked Veggie Today when we walked by it after seeing a movie at the Brendan Concord theatre on Willow Pass Rd. We glanced at the menu posted on the front window and decided to try it out. There seems to be more and more vegetarian restaurants opening in the Concord/Walnut Creek area. As we were waiting for our food I checked in and noticed that my favorite Vegan Yelp buds, Brandi, Roseanne P and John B had written rave reviews. Mr Mikey and I ordered: Vermicelli with Fried rolls served with vegan sauce Curry vegetables with brown rice lunch special Thai iced tea--a little too strong for me (but that's just me I like it weaker) We really enjoyed the vermicelli bowl. Tasty fried rolls served with cold bean thread noodles, lettuce, strips of cucumber, bean sprouts, mint and peanuts....refreshing and satisfying. The curry veggie plate came with a mix of tofu, broccoli, carrots, zucchini in a nicely seasoned curry sauce served with brown rice. The staff was very friendly. The ambiance is simple but clean and comfy. The other diners appeared to be regulars--always a good sign. The lunch specials are $6.75; my vermicelli dish was also $6.75 Many of their entrees are $7.99 to $9.50 but there are several dishes that are priced at $12.50. So I ate there unconspicuously in my car, while the Beastie Boys sang to me on the radio. What did I think of the soymeat of my Mongolian Beef? The texture was impressive, similar to meat, but not meat. It was tender, easy to chew, inviting, and it went well with the brown rice I chose. The medley of the sauce, red and green bell peppers, and sliced onions went very well together. I loved it all! **** I just kept thinking: "I can't believe this is not meat." Chew, chew, chew, swallow. **** And again, "I can't believe this is not meat." It's important to note that I did not get that heavy feeling that you usually get after eating real meat. Which tells me my body was diggin' this experience. SMILE OF YUMMY APPROVAL My first-time experience here at Veggie Today was like meeting a new potential boyfriend. You like him right away, are very curious about him, are attracted to him, and you want to know more! So that's how I feel about this place. Contra Costa is not known for Vegan Eating. So when a restaurant serves majority vegan eats. It's already a plus one in my book. We were looking for a place to eat for dinner. When I looked at my phone and noticed there was a New Vegan Restaurant in Concord, I quickly made a u-turn and told Agent_BYS to meet me there. Yes, I'm busted, driving while texting and yelping. Bad me!! Hey, Agent_BYS is suppose to be the King of Vegan food and to find the place before him was like an "in your face" moment. Haha When we tried this place out the first time, they gave us a complimentary Soy Thai Ice Tea. This was the first place I ever tried a soy version. I was not disappointed. It's a must try. The blended fruit smoothie was ok, but not the greatest. We ordered a MARINATED MEAT & TOFU RICE PLATE, I'm not a fan of working for my meal when I go to a restaurant, hence why I never go to a "hot pot" place. If I wanted to cook, then I would do it at home. So when the plate came with all the items separated...I was thinking to myself, really I have to mix this is all up. In the end, it was amazing. I would definitely order it again. We also ordered the LEMON GRASS CHICKEN. Which I think is the best Chicken dish on the menu. Fast forward from the day they opened to now...I think I have tried every vegan dish on the menu. Some dishes are NOT VEGAN so make sure you ask first before ordering. In the end I RECOMMEND: Appetizer: Fried Drumstick and Foo Young Seafood: Salt & Pepper Shrimp...the salad on the bottom is very good a meal itself. The shrimp is good. I love veggies and vegan food so I had been wanting to check this place out for a while, but it was near impossible to get my husband to give it a try so I ended up dining here alone for lunch one day. I ordered a bowl of soup ($8.50) and a shrimp dish ($13.50). The server warned me that it would be a lot of food. Not a problem - serve it spicy and I'll eat it all! The fried salt and pepper shrimp came with jalapenos on top of a bed of veggies. The batter was fried crispy and the "shrimp" were delicious. (Anything salty and fried is going to be pretty good!) The soup was also full of veggies and had shrimp in it. It was terrific too. It was a lot of food but I managed to eat most of it. Wow, a vegetarian restaurant that can satisfy both omnivores and carnivores alike! The menu offers many dishes that look like something you'll order from a Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese restaurant. I wanted to try this place for myself after reading the initial good reviews on YELP and the desire to try something different. I got takeout with three dishes and brown rice, and definitely want to go back to try other menu items. Prices are extremely reasonable for the quality and quantity you get. I should comment that vegetarian meals can be very filling. By eliminating meat, these dishes focus on complex texture combinations (soy, bean curds), bold flavors and sauces, and perfectly prepared veggies that are crisp and colorful to trick the senses. I'm glad one opened up in Concord to mix things up a bit. The drumstick appetizers are a must-have. Three pieces of bean curd(?) with a texture that's firm and stringy, almost like chicken. The outside was a perfrectly fried thin crust, and instead of bone you get a short sugar cane stick. It was extremely flavorful - they offer a nice sesame dipping sauce or you can go bold with a bit of the Sriracha. The "meat" was very flavorful and the "fried skin" was perfect. Mongolian beef was also flavorful, with faux beef strips combined with sliced onions, green pepper and red pepper strips that were all very vibrant and crispy. Flavors were good but I think some more heat would have been nice. Doesn't replace Emeryville's Crispy Fry but its a nice, lighter alternative. The basil eggplant is a typical Thai Dish thats often serviced with sliced chicken. Here it comes with firm tofu that imitates chicken. Flavor and texture of the eggplant was wonderful - semi-firm and not too gooey. They do put quite a bit of oil and sauce to enhance the flavor - so yes this side dish can also be quite filling. Lastly, we had the brown rice to go with the dishes. It was cooked perfectly - almost fluffy and airy. Not sure how they did this, but its very nice! read more

I was very pleased with their menu choices and the flavors are A+. I went back to eat here again and here is my review: Special Crepe $12.50 was a winner. Luncheon menu: Basil Eggplant and Tofu with brown gravy and rice $6.75 (brown rice is extra $1. which I got and it was good) Cooked perfect and was fresh - great flavor. A-. Vermicelli thin Noodles with Marinated Meat and fried spring roll $12. was another winner and great flavor. This was a first for me to have soy based meat and the texture was very good and reminded me of those soft tofu flavored snacks you get at Ranch 99. I ordered this at both my visits. I would prefer a thicker noodle like most Vietnamese restaurants when you order "Bun". Salt and Pepper Shrimp with Vegetables $13. was good, but I found the shrimp coating was too crispy for my taste. The vegetables, zucchini, broccoli, carrots were super fresh and all together it was good A-. I would recommend this place and the I found the staff was attentive. Since I turned vegetarian the start of 2016, I have been researching vegetarian and vegan restaurants. My parents live in Concord and I wanted to take them out to lunch to a vegetarian/vegan place and Veggie Today had great reviews. I really didn't know what to expect but boy, I was impressed! The prices are inexpensive ($6.75 for the lunch specials). My mom and I had the Mongolian "chicken" and my dad had the curry "chicken". My meal was tasty and the texture of the "meat" was very similar to chicken. Lots of veggies with the meal and also not salty. My dad thought he was eating real chicken! I had to remind him that it was all vegetarian. I highly recommend this place. Next time I am in Concord, I am coming back. They had such an extensive menu that I wanted to try everything. read more

My boyfriend and I were absolutely thrilled to see a new vegetarian restaurant in Concord! We went the first chance we got. I had the Tamarind 'Beef' with 'Shrimp' chips and my boyfriend has Lemongrass 'Chicken'. Both dishes were absolutely Delicious, and very distinctive. The Tamarind was sour, refreshing, with a slight sweetness. The lemongrass had a rich flavor with a good amount of spiciness. Great balance of flavors, nothing too overwhelming. Very relaxed, casual environment, I adore the ceiling, beautiful lighting, and cute fans. Yes, i agree with Jeannette -- this is the best all veggie restaurant in the far east bay! Parking around the corner is free for 3 hours. That itself should be worth 4 stars! Servers are friendly and attentive. They took a while to clear one of the tables after the group had left, but there was no hurry as it was pretty empty. Food was delectable faux meat Vietnamese. Had the spicy soup, and lemongrass "beef". Wished we had gotten the "chicken" drummette cos it looked awesome in the table across from us later. I was on the hunt for tasty and healthy, emphasis on "tasty" -- and this place hit the mark. Scanning through the menu, I was presented with lots of options: noodles, rice, chicken, beef, tofu, eggplant, but all veggie.. I decided on a mango smoothie that tasted like straight up mango (no filters) 4/5 and the Lemongrass chicken 5 out of 5. I went for the first time with my family two days ago and already can't wait to return! This is a pan-Asian vegetarian restaurant with tofu and veggie dishes as well as dishes with meat alternatives (eg soy "beef" and broccoli). The service was friendly and decently fast. The restaurant is simple but clean. I brought my 2-year old and 5-year old and they did fine there- it seemed kid friendly. I took my 8 year old daughter here for dinner last night, after seeing a friend of mine's check-in on Facebook. I was in the mood for something light, it was 106° outside, I was sunburnt and exhausted. The restaurant was dead, we were the only people there, and at first, I was kind of put off by the appearance of the place. Signs taped to the windows, the decor didn't match the theme of the restaurant, and the waiter looked really really bored. We ordered the drumsticks, tofu pho, salt and pepper shrimp, lemongrass chicken and a side of brown rice. I had read so many good reviews of all of these dishes I had to try them all. I asked the waiter if they could make the shrimp not spicy since I was sharing it with my daughter, he said yes. The drumsticks came, and I was surprised, they were amazing! You can tell it's not real meat, but it was super good. The lemongrass chicken was really really really spicy, but also good. You could totally tell the "chicken" was not real chicken, but it was still good, as was the pho. The salt and pepper shrimp was my favorite thing, and I swear it can't be soy. It tasted, looked like, and had the sane texture as real shrimp! I also ordered a thai iced tea, and if you don't get one when you go, you're missing out... It was really yummy! The brown rice was so soft and fluffy, perfectly cooked! The waiter took forrrrrrever to bring over the check, and my daughter had to go up and ask for containers for the leftovers, but he was attentive otherwise. I eat meat and will always eat meat. However, if I were to ever eat vegan food in the concord area, it would definitely be from veggie today. The spicy beef soup is delicious and I have yet to have an item I disliked. For the price, veggie today is the easiest and most price efficient place for a vegan lunch/dinner. The food might be a little oily but overall it's pretty good. The soups are the best things on the menu and the employees are friendly. read more

Your review helps others learn about great local businesses. I had high expectations from this restaurant but was slightly disappointed on my visit here last weekend. It's a small and simple place with the basic amenities in place . I found their menu interesting which was the reason why I even decided to visit. The service was decent but the food was not as good. We started with the FRIED DRUMSTICKS and they were chewy with a weird taste. The dip on the side had a piece of hair in it and we had to get that replaced. The SALTED & PEPPER SHRIMP on the other hand was pretty good. The veggie shrimp was very close to an actual shrimp which was delightful and the salad it was served in was good too. Although I would've liked more shrimp on my plate and less salad. Next came in the COMBINATION RICE CLAYPOT wherein we'd ordered for white rice but was served with brown rice instead. I've had far better versions of a Vegan Claypot and this one was just about average. I don't think it was worth the visit and I don't think I shall be visiting again anytime soon. 1 star off for being pricey, some of the dishes recommended by other yelpers were $12-13! (A thai iced tea is $3.50). We got the lotus salad (refreshing and yummy) and lemongrass chicken which was pretty tasty (not an "I must have it again" feeling though). Fast service. read more

Grass jelly- YAS! Mongolian chicken- eh, won't order again. Kind of rubbery. Curry chicken- I don't even like curry but the way they made the chicken crispy and chewy made it kind of special. Ordered it 2x. Thai fried rice- spicy, yummy...isn't fried rice kind of hard to mess up, tho? Foo young- this made me happy and I did a shoulder dance.
