I wanted to try a new Japanese restaurant in a new neighborhood while I'm cat sitting for a relative. I came across another Yelper's review and decided to try out Okini Sushi, in Pleasant Hill. It's a few miles off the 680 freeway, located in a scenic neighborhood. I ordered a delicious crab meat salad topped with avocados and I ordered off of the Happy Hour menu, with an aloha roll, it is a crabmeat, cucumber roll salmon on top with seaweed salad decorating the top of the roll. I ordered the mini chirashi don, which was a perfect main dish with five large slices of sashimi over rice, seaweed salad and a couple of nice spices of tamagoyaki (rolled egg), plus miso soup and a side salad. Easy listening music plays in the background, the wait staff are very nice and polite. The family at the next table with two little kids were given cute children's sectioned plates with kids' chopsticks, which was very convenient for the four year old to use, however, the two year old wasn't big enough to use chopsticks. This was a perfectly delicious lunch, with enough leftovers for a later dinner meal. Do try out this restaurant if you're driving along in the East Bay on the very long 680 freeway, it's a detour of five miles in land. There is plenty of parking here, it's located next to a barbecue shop with sauces, which I'll need to check out afterwards. read more

1st time here, came in 5 minutes after opening on a Saturday. There was already three tables filled. By 12 half the restaurant was filled. The tables are not that close so you can have a private conversation. Our server was spot on, came back numerous times just to check on us. As for the food, we had the Titanic Roll. It was large and flavorful. It just had a little too much cucumber for me. 4/5. The Sushi lunch was reasonably priced, super fresh fish with decent sized slices. I truly loved the CA roll that came along with the Nigiri. One of the best CA rolls I've had in a long time. 5/5 It's a distance from our home but I know when we are on that side of the hill running errands on a Saturday, we will be coming back. 100% Recommended read more

Service was okay the day we went, granted it was a busier Friday evening. We had asked for refills of ginger and wasabi multiple times but it never game. My husband and I shared a couple rolls: the Cherry Blossom Roll, Okini Roll, and a Honey Bunny Roll. The rolls were VERY heavy handed with sauce, and I do like mayo, but not to be overwhelmed in so much mayo that you can't taste the delicate and individual flavors of the fish. read more

If I could give my experience a 0 I would. I'm extremely disappointed with the service we received last night and we've been coming here for years, well before they moved to their current location on Morello and Taylor. We were sat next to a family who after a few minutes of sitting down quickly realized their kids were unruly. Standing on seats, throwing their plates full of food on floor multiple times. I've never wanted to leave an establishment so fast. We ended up ordering a very small order so we could get out of there quickly. After the waiter brought out our food, he never came back not once to see if we needed anything else, never even came back with our check! We finally had to get up and go to the counter and ask to pay. The woman at the counter who works there said we had to stay at our table to pay! I said absolutely not-I was not going to sit there another minute because of that family. It was not an enjoyable dinner. She replied "well we are a family restaurant " Um what? I replied back to her yes I know that, I come here with my family and my kids don't act that way. Needless to say we will not be coming back again. I refuse to pay for this kind of service. Going out these days to eat is a luxury these days and this kind of experience makes me want to stay home. Okini, do better! And for those who are thinking, why didn't we ask to be moved to a different table? This place has got to be the best sushi place in the area. The nigiri is exceptional, would recommend the Hamachi. The Godzilla rolls were also great and exceeded my expectations. Would recommend Hamachi and Philadelphia rolls with iced tea for an awesome lunch. The servers are also very nice. I love eating in when I can especially during this time of year ( World Cup ). Getting to eat good sushi and watching the game has got to be one of the best dining experiences Ive had. 100% would recommend this place to literally anyone. read more

What a gem! Seated within 4 minutes of arrival. Seated and given menues from a friendly staff member. Ordered a few items. Fried Oysters 5 pcs. Breaded & fried. Super fresh and yummy. Breading was crispy with not much seasoning. Which is great, I wanna taste the oyster! Honey Bunny Roll was so delicious! So many flavors! Tender and fresh. Salmon, shrimp tempura, hamachi, spicy crabmeat and some type of crawfish salad topped the roll. Friends had the Bay Bridge Roll and mentioned it tasted fresh and seafood was tender. Philadelphia roll & Godzilla roll. All rolls were a beautiful presentation of artwork! Ambiance was nice. Granted it was a Friday night and it was crowded & loud. No biggie for us. Came in on a saturday afternoon and honestly wasn't too busy but service was fast and friendly :) I had a hard time picking out what rolls to try out but definitely wasn't disappointed with the picks! The specialty rolls are a good portion size and also very tasty! The inside was nice and clean. I love how it felt like you could drop by and grab a quick bite, then leave satisfied. I love going to the sushi spot. It's off the beaten path and easily missed, so you need to be intentional about going there. You won't be disappointed. It also helps that there is plenty of free parking at the location. I'm always surprised by how quickly they're able to get the food to me even when it's a busy night. We've been visiting this place since they first opened in their original location back in 2016, and we've stayed loyal customers even after they moved to the new spot. There are a lot of Japanese restaurants in the area, but one thing really sets this place apart: the sushi rice. The fish is always fresh, but what makes the biggest difference is the rice. Not too hard, too vinegary, too hot, or too cold if you know what I mean -- perfect texture and balance. The service is consistently good, and they offer a happy hour menu every day that's very affordable for a Japanese restaurant. We'll keep coming back again and again. read more

The ambiance when walking into the restaurant was very chill. The place did look small due to how some sections were divided. Tables were very spacious and room between another table is wide enough to walk around on a packed evening. Servers were very attentative and quick with refills. I did like how they made sure there was space on the table before putting the plate down. We ordered a few items like: Saba Shoiyaki + Sashimi Bento Box - $23 + $2 for Nigiri Teriyaki Chicken Bento + Nigiri Bento Box - $23 + $2 for Sashimi Double Salmon Roll - $16 Sushi Deluxe (10 Nigiri + CA Roll) - $31 For the bento boxes, it came with soup and salad. The rolls and sushi entrees did not come with anything unfortunately and I wish they did include something like the miso soup and/or salad. Although the protein was great, we felt that for the price of the bento box it was packed with more rice than proteins. There could've been more protein added especially when the Nigiri and Sashimi as the second item was only 3 pieces each and they were thin/not thick. The Double Salmon Roll was decent. Salmon tasted fresh and didn't have that fishy smell. Nothing fell out so that is always a good sign of how tight they wrap their rolls. But again for the price, we hoped the pieces would be a bit bigger than just bite size pieces. The Sushi Deluxe was great. The fish to rice ratio was 2:1 which is awesome. They also added items you rarely see like the scallop, seared saba, yellowtail belly as a nigiri item. The CA roll was just okay. It came with the set as 8 bite sized pieces. read more

I've been four or five times for lunch since I discovered this place. I've had the same mini Kaisen Don every time, so wanted to try something else. I love tempura, and tofu, so planned on the lunch combo. When they told me the tofu is deep fried, I hesitatingly chose sesame chicken, hesitant only because sesame chicken seems more Chinese than Japanese to me. Excellent, quick service as always. Good salad, good soup. The sesame chicken was better than I expected. But the tempura was inconsistent. And, what's weird, is to judge something for being too generous a portion. It was a big floret of broccoli and either squash or pumpkin, both good. A good shrimp. A huge onion ring, but they left the outer skin layer of onion on, and it stayed tough, couldn't bite through it, so i just got a long fibrous onion string, the coating fell off the rest, leaving me with warm onion. And, the serving included a ¾-inch think plank of white potato... way too thick for tempura veggies. I'd have been happier with less overall if the veggies were cut thinner, prepared better. Still plan on returning, but will probably stick with the excellent Kaisen Don, maybe try some appetizers, at future visits. And I still plan to go try dinner there. read more

Okini Sushi has been my go to happy hour spot for a while now. Literally 4 rolls and an app for 40 bucks where else in the world can you get that kinda deal. The owners and staff are always nice, fun and will remember you. The restaurant is very typical in many ways but also has a fun little thing going on. The restaurant is in a small strip mall setting. It's the real deal when it comes to Japanese food especially the quality of the sushi . The service was what should be expected. This is my favorite Japanese restaurant to go to! I have been here a few times, most recently to celebrate my birthday! There is an enclosed area that made it feel like a private room for my party. They were so nice and accommodating for my 2 toddler nephews. It was really thoughtful how they bring out kid plates and kid chopsticks for kids. They also gave them a small container of ice cream at the end! The food is always delicious here. I got their lunch combo with pork Katsu and tekka maki which comes with salad and miso soup. The katsu is perfectly crispy and isn't dry. The portion of the lunch combo is perfect. Other times we have gone here we have gotten sushi and fried oysters. Everyone else in my party really enjoyed their food as well! There is a bathroom with stalls, but it seems separate from the restaurant. You have to go through a couple doors to get there but it's fine! There is plenty of parking as this place is located in a plaza. read more

This is my closest go-to for sushi and it never disappoints. It's somewhat hidden in Pleasant Hill, but easy to get to once you come here a few times. Prices are very reasonable which is a plus, but the he variety on the menu is solid. I'm always for sushi and sashimi first. We have been eating at Okini, since the were in a small space on across from Virginia Hills Safeway. Their newer location is lovely and has much more room. We go there for meals, as a couple and bring guests there. We have even celebrated special family occasions there. Tonight we had our entire family and a few of their guests to our home to celebrate a momentous achievement by our granddaughter. This time we had party platers delivered. What a feast! Came here to celebrate my husband and I's wedding anniversary and it was really yums! Although walnut creek has a lot of sushi places I think this place is one of the rarer ones that carried a vast variety of sashimi! We ordered age-dashi tofu for our apps and then california rolls and the 36 piece sashimi platter ot share! The age-dashi tofu was alright, nothing too special but I did really enjoy the california rolls and the sashimi! The sashimi was super fresh and the pieces were pretty sizeable! We were honestly quite full from the sashimi that we had to take a break half way through to digest haha. I think the one thing that kind of threw me off was that the service was just okay. I love this place from the service and especially the food! We came with a big group and the gentleman serving us was attentive and funny especially to a child that was with us. It was a packed restaurant and it was fun because everyone in the restaurant was watching the intense basketball game with lots of cheering going on. The hot food came out pretty fast while the sushi took longer which was expected. I ordered the Chirashi bowl which was amazing. The fish was fresh, huge cuts and loved that they added furikake to the rice which I've never seen that before there.
