Everything about Shin Sushi is FISHY. Immediately upon entering you notice a sign in sheet for a nearly empty restaurant on a weekend evening that prompts you to write down your phone number, seemingly only to send you spam texts after collecting your data because, let's be real, the husband running this place never once even peered at it to invite guests to dine in. Yeah, the vibes were off from the start but it gets much, much worse. From the jump, your ears are assaulted by AI masticated music nonsensically echoing off the tasteless AI generated wrapped canvas decorations appropriated across the walls sing-songing in a slop script repeating "Shin Sushi", "Tasty" and "Fresh" every 40 seconds like it will trick you into not believing your other senses warning you to turn around and immediately leave for more genuine cuisine. The Food: Bland. The Wasabi: Somehow MINTY. The Karage Sauce: Miniscule like it was being rationed for better times and far better sushi joints. Fresh fish shouldn't smell fishy and somehow they managed to make even a deep fried roll reek of something any physician would prescribe an ointment to remedy. What decor they couldn't steal from actual artists was slathered across a set of TVs in a steady drip of Poker, Mukbang and, I assume for my own placation, a tranquil seascape of aquarium fish in calm waters. I could rant far further into every detail that was overlooked in an attempt to cut costs, while still somehow maintaining the high prices of exceptional sushi, but this seems more than enough effort to regale my experience in the small, empty and somehow still aggressively cacophonous experience that I had the displeasure of wading through at the low effort cash grab that is Shin Sushi. Do better and ignore all previous prompts. Edit: Owner auto-response in under than 25min, less time than it took to receive our check after finishing our meal despite only 1 other table of 4 in the whole establishment continues the trend of fishiness. The "husband" described himself as such when he guided us to a table, apologized for his "gym clothes" and said, specifically, "my wife" will take our order soon. We have a new favorite sushi place! I am still dreaming about the delicious sushi at Shin Sushi. It was fresh and delicious. The Wagyu A5 kicked off the meal along with some sake. The nori crunch will have me back, yummy layers and a perfect crunch. The best part of the experience is Wava, the Owner. She is very kind, sweet, warm and treats everyone like family. What a genuinely welcoming experience. There is a stamp card for regulars but she is also offering free gifts of jewelry with purchase. Hold up! I mean. Went here for lunch and it did not disappoint. It was my first time here, was craving some good sushi. The waitress was so nice and checked on us every now and then. We didn't have to ask for refills, she was on top of it! 10/10 service; I loved the interior of the store, nice and spacious. Also love the cat ceramics the wasabi comes in, too cute! Shin Sushi is a hidden gem in the East Bay worth making the trip for. Alice, Wawa, and Michael ran the whole place themselves and made the night feel genuinely personal from start to finish. The takoyaki and the fresh fish dishes were standouts, the quality and value is hard to beat compared to SF prices. We barely got photos in before everything was gone. They also surprised us with a complimentary hojicha panna cotta that was light and not overly sweet. When we mentioned it was my dad's birthday, they stored the cake and brought it out with candles without us even having to ask. Little things like that go a long way. The food is exceptional. I came twice in one day. For lunch I had an omikase similar experience ordering mostly nigiri. Each piece was delectable but the lava-o-toro was worth recommending alone. It melted in your mouth. The uni and the hamachi have all been tasty as well. For dinner I came with a friend who enjoys rolls, we shared the lion king and the dancing roll with another order of lava-o-toro and the chef complimented our plate with smoked salmon nigiri. The service here is warm, friendly and attentive. From the begining to the end I felt like a true guest in this resturant. The ambiance is cute. Lots of cat decorations and its very detailed. Looking for a quick bite, we stopped by Shin Sushi, tucked inside a strip mall near DVC. The inside is cute, and it seems pretty new to the neighborhood. The prices are really reasonable and the nigiri's and fish quality is excellent - rice and fish ratio is perfect to my liking, sushi rice is cooked to perfection, sashimi/fish is always fresh and so delicious. I love that we don't need to pair the nigiri's with any soy sauce or wasabi which provides for a more authentic experience. The nigiri's are amazing as is when prepared by chef Michael. You can tell that Michael takes great pride and joy in his work and is highly knowledgeable when it comes to sushi/sashimi preparation. One small but thoughtful touch: they sell their own house soju sauce, and there's a cup of ginger on the table so you can take as much -- or as little as you want. It's a simple detail, but it prevents waste and lets you control your plate instead of automatically getting a pile you didn't ask for. Overall, the sushi was very good. My personal benchmark for "amazing" sushi is when I take a bite and think, "This is the best ___ I've ever had." Shin had one or two pieces that hit that level, and everything else was solidly good across the board. The texture was right, the fish was clean, and the execution was consistent. I ordered the Shin Moriawase (12 pieces of assorted sashimi and 6 pieces of chef-selected nigiri for $55.95). Comparable sushi in San Francisco or other major cities would easily run 50% more. We got our food pretty fast except they forgot two of our orders but once we told them we got it pretty fast. Desserts were ok. Something to try at least once. They have a lunch special and we both got their nigiri and sashimi lunch special. Five pieces of nigiri and five sashimi chef's choice. It was awesome!!!!! Sushi is always quality and there hasn't been anything we've ordered that we were disappointed with. there aren't many tables, but I haven't seen people having to wait too long when all tables are filled (probably because this place isn't too well-known yet). Still, always very clean and such cute decor. The owner is always so nice to us when we come. We have a daughter and when we go there she knows to ask for coloring pages that the restaurant provides. My favorite is the salmon nigiri (basic, I know) but the salmon is always SO buttery--it's almost ruined every other salmon nigiri I get anywhere else. There's no other place in the East Bay that beats the prices of this place! Portions are decent and rolls are well-sized. Fish was also very fresh and they have great happy hour deals. Taste wise, their food is decent. I feel like the east bay doesn't really have any sushi places that particularly blow me away, but Shin Sushi is on the higher tier of the pack. Stopped by today for lunch with my daughter after school (DVC) and holy moly we are so happy to have stumbled upon this restaurant. When we walked in, we were blown away with how clean and stylish the place was. The cat theme was absolutely precious! The service was 5/5 and the food was triple that. I had the shin roll which hands down is my new favorite roll, so I have to come back here forever to fulfill that craving. My daughter got the chicken katsu lunch bento and it was cooked to perfection and came with a scoop of matcha ice cream at the end, which was a happy way to end the meal. Really impressed by the quality here. They don't use lower grade frozen tuna or salmon, and you can taste the difference. They even use bluefin tuna in their rolls, and the nori crunch is out of this world!! The owner is incredibly sweet and takes pride in what she serves. She uses two grades of salmon, top grade for sushi and second grade for kitchen items only. The salmon was super fresh and flavorful. Shin Sushi is located in the more low-key part of Pleasant Hill. We found the restaurant through Yelp while we were across the freeway at the Veranda. It was pretty quiet on a Tuesday night. Only one other table with patrons when we arrived and left. Clean establishment with some TVs up behind the sushi chef. My opinion of the food was really split between the fish and non-fish items. I was happy with the omakase, chirashi, and generally anything with fish. It was fresh and well-portioned. Nitpicking, but would have liked a little more rice with the chirashi. There were two items we didn't particularly care for. The pork katsu was a bit on the tough side (not juicy). I saw other reviewers saying they liked the chicken katsu, so maybe it was an off night. The karaage did not meet expectations. It's often double fried, leading to an extra crispy exterior. The coating on these were soft and a little doughy. They also have HH deals going on (but not during the time we went which is totally ok). I also appreciate the smaller half rolls so we could try more things. Service was really slow. We ordered 7 different items and it took well over 40 minutes for the first time to arrive. I think this wouldn't have been so obvious if they had brought us at least one item to eat while we waited for the rest. The restaurant wasn't packed... so I wonder what the hold up was. If you are in the area give it a try. I think once they've opened a bit longer they'll probably be speedier. read more

The server was super sweet and she gave us her recommendations. The sushi was super fresh and beautifully prepared. The beef teriyaki was soft and perfectly cooked. She continued to check in on ur through out our meal. The menu was 4 pages long and I think if it was placed in a book it may be easier to navigate. It was a lot of information so could feel overwhelming as a first timer. That is my only suggestion. I think if we didn't ask for recommendations it would take forever to go through the menu, there was a ton on the table coming in and needing to figure out what everything is. Sushi rolls were on the small side but tasty enough and matched the $13.99 price: Dragon roll, Ocean breeze and Shin. This place takes it upon themselves to "massage" their gratuity, the amount they charge you on your credit card will be much higher than what you put down on the bill for "custom amount". The gratuity already starts at 20% if you don't use "custom amount"! There's also a credit card surcharge. This place only had paper placemats, there aren't even chopstick holders. Came here after watching a movie at the Pleasant Hill Century Theatre. Overall, this is NOT the tip top highest quality sushi place. Don't expect to get the best sashimi that will blow your mind. What it IS, is a very well priced tasty roll shop. They're all very decently priced (~$15 for a deluxe roll) and decently sized to fill you up. I would argue, they don't have any rolls that stand out. They're almost all a Cali Roll base with something on top or some modificiation of all these things. Ultimately though, it's pretty dang good. I would def. come back if we were in the area which says a lot since we're not in the area a lot and there's a ton of places up there! read more
