Nice larger atmosphere inside. Almost feels like one of those chain sports bar restaurants. I got the bento lunch and the portion size was large. Got my money's worth. However, the tempura was too oily and didn't taste like tempura I've had at other places. It was almost like they deep fried it the same way you deep fry calamari or french fries. It's funny I give this 3.5 stars because I would come back lol but not because the food is good, because of the convenient location. The service is always great, the stars are just for the food. A very casual eatery with plenty of seating. Chicken Katsu 3/5 it wasn't bad, just nothing to rave about. I probably wouldn't order it again and it did not make the clean plate club. Spicy Tuna Roll 3/5 Don't know how I finished this one, as you can see the color of the tuna is off. The texture of the tuna was okay, though I found the roll to be dry. 1 June 2025 They tried to squeeze us in a crowded area under a speaker again like on our last visit. We asked for and they quickly moved us to a better spot. Josh was our waiter today and did an amazing job. We had some confusion on our part how to choose bento box items. The menu is a bit confusing but Josh took great care to make sure we weren't surprised with an extra $5 charge. Later my wife peeped softly to me that she needs lemon. Like a bat listening with sonar, Josh swept in.."Did I hear someone needs lemon?" The service and food here has always been great and this visit was no exception. Josh informed us it was happy hour. Unfortunately we had already chosen regular priced meals from the daily menu and didn't notice the skinny strip of paper menu on the table. Geriatric eyes need a magnifying glass to read that tiny crowded print. smh. Maybe print on double-sided 8.5 X 11 paper with average sized font? Today the grilled Saba (mackerel) was so good. #WOW! Service is always great. We are always greeted with a smile regardless if its slow or rush hour. They are also very tentative and patient. Restaurant is spacious with a bar seating. Lots of room to walk around tables and booths. Do wish the lights were a bit brighter. Some dishes comes with miso soup or miso soup + salad. Helps fill the stomach a bit before enjoying their sushi. Selection of rolls are great. Really enjoyed the Newport Roll the most out of all choices. They are packed with flavor literally and figuratively. Their Nigiri Mix/Combo is also good and filling. Their Sushi and Sashimi for $40 is totally worth it. The sashimi was so fresh and so good and it just melts in your mouth like butter! 3 big slices of tuna, yellowtail and salmon sashimi with 8 different nigiri and 8 CA rolls. Their sushi boat (Medium is $120 / Large is $140) may be pricey but it comes with a lot of slices/pieces. Do watch out for their unagi though as there are bones in them still. But all other types of fishes were great especially the salmon pieces. Highly recommend their chirashi bowl $($30) or 2 item bento box ($19). Both are worth the amount and the price point. This will be a regular spot for us if we crave for sushi which is quite often. read more

My server, Ryan, made all the difference. "Attentive" doesn't do his service justice. Whenever I finished my water, he was there before I could blink to refill the glass for me and ask me if my roll was okay or I needed a box, etc. Trust me, it wasn't the annoying hovering act some servers employ. Everything at this Kansai is just as legit as their Oakland location--including that delicious miso soup! I usually go for a fairly simple roll (what, you don't go for an avocado cucumber roll, too?!) but my fellow diners usually enjoy the more elaborate baked concoctions. It's also less pricey than other nearby sushi spots, which ya girl can appreciate in this climate. (Or any climate.) Worth a visit. read more

They offer Toro nigiri on the menu and a variety of rolls -- the Oakland roll was tasty and I ordered fresh sliced jalapeños on the side to put it on top for $1! Kansai (specifically Concord location) is my favorite and go-to sushi spot. They have an extensive list of rolls, generous portion sizes, and they have happy hour (3pm-6pm AND late night HH). My favorite rolls are the John roll (on HH for $12.95) and the Pink Lady roll, and we always get hamachi sashimi ($11.95 on HH for 5 fat slices). We've also tried the lion king roll and S.P. Cucumber roll - lion king roll is good, just really saucy! And cucumber roll is nice and refreshing. Haven't tried any other items besides the sushi, so can't comment on the rest of the menu. But I feel like you can't go wrong with any of the rolls. It's really hard to venture off and try other sushi spots when Kansai always fulfills that sushi craving. Highly recommend! read more

We just happened to stop by this parking lot near Shop and Park as my friend was looking for an EV charger for her car as the other shopping center nearby had chargers but they were all in use. This shopping center has at least 4 chargers, 2 cars to each charger so that's great and there were Asian restaurants nearby so we decided on Kansai Concord! My friend ordered the lunch bento special which was chicken teriyaki and California rolls, soup and salad included. I ordered the two item bento with salmon sashimi and salmon teriyaki and it also came with soup and salad. The salmon sashimi was fresh and the salmon teriyaki moist and tender! After moving to Texas, I returned last week to visit my mother. She likes this place. Me, not so much. Having been here a few times over the past four years i lived in Concord, we stopped going after a few visits. I was hopeful to see if things changed, but I hasn't. I ordered a chicken donburi bowl and it was not good at all. Most disappointing was the amount of sauce they put on it. The sauce is to accent the dish, not make it into a bowl of soup. They have a huge menu of options, ranging from a long list of appetizers to sushi (sashimi, nigiri, and a LOT of rolls) to udon to donburi, there's something for everyone here! We were all pretty hungry, so we all opted for a 3 item bento for $22.95. You can choose one teriyaki item, one sushi item, and one deep fried item. I got the bento with beef teriyaki, California Roll, and shrimp tempura, and it comes with miso soup, rice, and salad as well. The food was all pretty good. I really liked the beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura, both of which were executed perfectly. The rice in the California roll was a bit more vinegar-y than usual, and the scoop of rice tasted a bit dry, but these were small issues and I still enjoyed the bento. I got food poisoning. Every time I visit Kansai, I notice that I'm often stared at by the chefs and some of the younger staff, which makes me feel uncomfortable. As a Black woman, I can't help but wonder if that's the reason, because the vibe feels off. It takes away from what should be a relaxing dining experience. That said, the sushi itself is good, which is why I've gone back more than once. I just wish the atmosphere felt more welcoming and inclusive. read more
