YEAAAAAAA AHH AHAHAHeeay it's a party in the damn Vace! I got to go by for lunch today and try a sub: an Italian. It was banging! Vace, can you do no wrong? Do you know how much I think about you? Or that I am freaking out inside just ordering my sub (or pizza) because I want to buy everything in sight? ALMOST like Jersey, but no veggies in sight on this puppy--not even lettuce (though you can get hot peppers which are technically vegetables). Vace don't play. The meat--incredible. The cheese--yum! The bread--the kind that wreaks havoc on the roof of your mouth. Heaven! I also grabbed a half pound of sun-dried tomatoes for a mere $4 (it would take about 100 tomatoes to make as many in my home dryer). I did notice they jacked up the price of the dried figs. They were only $2.50 a few weeks ago and now they're $3.25. Careful, soul mate, or we could have our first tiff. Can't wait to return. I'm having a bunch of friends in town next weekend and plan to take them there for dinner. Oh, and I also plan to pick up a bag of the house-made meatballs to drop off over at Pete's. Lemme just say the pizza is really good. Thats why they aren't getting just one star. I'm a local that lives near this place. I regularly pick up a pie and take to Atomic Billiards down the street. However, they are total jerks. They are rude, disorganized and ticket times are a total joke. They get annoyed if you want your slice warmed up. They get annoyed if you pay with a credit card. But more recently they close 30-40 mins early. I called last night at 8:25 and they said they are no longer serving. It wasn't even 8:30?! What restaurant is the whole world closes in the middle of the dinner rush. I really just want this place to stop acting like the soup nazi from Seinfeld and get there act together. read more

PROS: Delicious, quality pizza, pizza is freshly made, low price, convenient location, interesting little store CONS: No tables or chairs, poor customer service -- long waits, not the most efficient establishment POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: Avoid weekend peak lunch hours, go at 11am or 3-4pm, call ahead of time, expect to wait, don't go if you are pressed for time or have hungry children with you I have been to Vace's twice this month (early June 2010). The first visit occurred around 2pm on a Saturday, the second around 4pm on a Sunday. I ordered pizza by the slice both times. First of all, let me say that this was fantastic pizza at a great price. Large, thick slices for a little under $2 each -- can't beat that! 1-topping slices come ready made; you have a choice of pepperoni, mushroom, white onion, white spinach, or plain pizza. I had a slice of pepperoni and a slice of white spinach. Delicious! It's a cute setup -- an Italian grocery store with a deli counter. The first time my friends and I went there, we spent a while just looking at all the different meats, cheeses, and imported goods from Italy! In addition, Vace's has a very convenient location: 5 minutes down the street from Cleveland Park metro. If you live in the area, this would be a great place to pick up take out on the way home from work, or if you're adventurous, have a meal before hiking to the zoo. My friend introduced me to Vace, and I'm very glad. Now, the cons. I love Vace's pizza, but you should be aware of two very important things before you go: 1. No place to sit in Vace's. It's a takeout place. There are no tables or chairs. This means no place to sit and eat, and no place to sit while you wait for your order. And you may be waiting a while. The lack of chairs/tables was a bit problematic as my friend's house was a couple blocks away and we were hungry. There are 2 park benches if you go out the door of Vace's, turn left, and walk down the street. Unfortunately, other people were sitting there. We considered sitting outside on the grass, but couldn't find a spot far enough from traffic that wasn't private property! If only Vace had tables and chairs!! 2. Customer service isn't great. Expect to be in there 15-20 minutes, even if you're ordering 2 ready made slices of pizza and there is no line. I don't expect to be treated like royalty in a small takeout pizza place, but the first time we went (around 2pm on a Saturday) we left without any food. The server informed us that the pizzas were still in the oven (they had run out of pre-made slices) and that we would need to wait 5 minutes. Well, we waited 10 minutes after which the server gave us white onion instead of the white spinach slices we ordered!!! She packed them in foil, and if we hadn't confirmed the order we would have left with the wrong pizza. All this after we had clearly told her we wanted white spinach! For the white spinach pizza, we were informed that there would be another 5-10 minute wait!!! We waited 5 minutes, and then too hungry to deal with it any more, went next door to Fresh Med for hot sandwiches. Even though the sandwiches were tad more expensive, Fresh Med served us quickly and there were places to sit and a flatscreen TV!! My friends who live in the area believe frustration at Vace's can be reduced by going at the right times. 11am, they say, is a good time because it isn't crowded and fresh pizzas have just come out of the oven. Our second visit was around 4pm on Sunday and a fresh pepperoni pizza had just been made. Our 2pm Saturday visit was hectic, I guess Vace's had just finished with the weekend lunch rush and were out of ready made slices. Despite the wait times I've described in this review, know that Vace's is worth checking out for its excellent pizza and because the pizza is made fresh. There would be no waiting if all the pizzas were made at the beginning of the day and sat out for several hours, but who wants that? Yuck! Other misc advice: make sure to remind the server to heat up your pizza if you like it hot. The pizzas are all very fresh, but do get cold on the counter after sitting out for a few minutes. I live in the neighborhood and go to Vace all the time. I love their pizza and they have some great products. Unfortunately, after the experience I had this past weekend, I cannot with a good conscience go back to Vace in Cleveland Park. I saw both inconsiderate, unsafe, and most importantly--unsanitary conditions at Vace. I called over an hour ahead of time and placed an order for pickup. I showed up on time, the place was crowded. While people were wearing masks and trying their best to socially distance, the number of people in the store was definitely over the covid capacity noted on the door. The lady at the cashier was flat out rude to customers, and mocked a man in front of me. I made my way to the front and notified the same lady at the cashier that I was there for a pick up. She told me I had to wait in line, without asking me what my order was or anything. I wait in a long line and finally got to the front, asked for my order, and she rang me up. She then proceeded to tell me it will be a bit because they just started to make my order. I said that I called over an hour ago for a timed pick up and she yelled at me that I'm not the only one ordering food. While I totally understand that Sundays are busy for them...why take a call ahead timed order during a pandemic if not to shorten the amount of time customers have to spend in the store????? While all of this was terrible customer service, I thought I could overlook this for the food. I then patiently waited for my food. I had ordered 4 subs, 2 of which were actually for family members who are high risk and over the age of 60. I watched them make the sandwiches since the kitchen is open. First I noticed that the lady who was making the subs was NOT WEARING GLOVES. She had touched everything in sight, and even helped with the cashier at one point. Now she was handling my family's food without gloves during a global pandemic. As I continued to watch, I then saw her take the sub roll, and hit the other staff member in the back with the roll to get his attention. So now not only did I have to worry about her hands and her germs on my subs, but also had to worry about whatever germs, sweat, or dirt was also on this man's back and t-shirt that she just purposefully touched with my bread. This is, even during normal times, terribly UNSANITARY and truly disgusting. Considering it's a global pandemic AND these subs were for loved ones, I quickly pleaded for my money back and refused to take any items home to my family. I immediately asked them to stop making the food and notified them that I felt uncomfortable that gloves were not being worn while preparing the food. Not once did they offer to remake the subs wearing gloves. Not once did they apologize for the entire situation. I had to scramble to find food elsewhere at the last minute for my family event. I am sad that this experience ruined Vace for me, but now I know and I will never recommend Vace to a friend or loved one ever again. If this is how they prepare food in the area where customers can see, I can only imagine what kind of conditions are occurring behind the scenes where the customers cannot observe. read more

As we got off the metro in Cleveland Park to attend an opening day showing of Indiana Jones, we could already see the line forming outside the Uptown Theater. And this was an hour and a half before the show! We decided to just grab a pizza at Vace and eat it in line. Despite telling us it would take a half an hour, it took more like 40 minutes to get our pizza. It was ready just as the line started moving and they were letting people into the theater. We then had about five minutes to consume the pizza before going in! I dont know that i've ever eaten so fast! I scarfed down two pieces in about 3 minutes. They may have been the best three minutes of my life. The crust is the perfect crispiness but not too crispy. While my esophagus is probably still in pain from this, i love the fact that it is more sauce oriented than cheese. I hate pizza that is too overly cheesey, but at Vace they really emphasize the sauce and it is fantastic! It makes for really the perfect marinara sauce. In the past i've had the white pizza, which was also very tasty (and less harmful to my body!) The place is full of different italian foods and pastas you can buy. You can even buy their dough, sauce and cheese and make your own! It all looks so good and I only wish my bank account and pants would allow me to buy and consume it all! Overall, a fantastic choice for eating in the line, or on your way to the zoo, or really just because you wanted to eat pizza :) Just dont plan on eating in the store since they dont have any place to sit! read more

Awesome. Just plain awesome. I got a slice of the white onion pizza which was delicious. Wish I had time to try more. The dough was simply outstanding. Great consistency. Nice combo of crunch and substance. Disappointing that there is nowhere to sit, especially on a cold night, but I was already aware of that when I came. If I lived in the area that would be fine but I have to make a special trip to Cleveland Park so it's a little tough. In addition to great pizza they also have a bunch of homemade pastas and pasta dishes, ready to take home. I don't know that I'll ever have the opportunity to try them, but they look delicious. I love this place. Their pizzas, subs and frozen pastas are delicious. They serve pizza by the slice and pizzas to go. Ask for your pizza to be warmed up - it's worth the short wait! It's crispy since they put the sauce on top of the cheese and it's full of flavor and good-ness. They usually have subs ready to go during lunch time, but you can order your own if you call ahead or wait a bit. They have an incredible selection of frozen pastas (meat and cheese cannelloni, ravioli, tortellini, etc.), a few different pasta sauces, and sometimes they have frozen tiramisu...yummmmm. HOLY SNAP. I had no idea I hadn't written a review for this place yet... The pizza here is like heaven. I mean, I've never been to heaven, but I could only hope and dream that the pizza in heaven tastes like Vace pizza (this is also assuming I'm going to heaven...). No kidding, this is the best pizza I've tasted outside of NYC. I had 2 slices: a slice of white pizza with onions and another slice of white pizza with spinach and onions. Seriously. I couldn't believe it was so tasty. I want to say the crust had something to do with it (perfect), but overall, the pizza was outstanding. And the fact that it was so cheap made it taste EVEN BETTER (if that was even possible). What I'm trying to say is, Vace is amazing and I wish there was one across the street from my apartment. Besides the pizza, they sell a bunch of other stuff. It kinda doubles as an Italian supermarket, where they sell all kinds of pasta and sauces and other Italian goodies. Coming here at any time of day would be a good idea - it's good for lunch, dinner, a snack, or even just to pick up a bottle of olive oil for that awesome dinner you're planning that night. The pizza here is tasty and the olive selection is good. Those are the only reasons this place doesn't get a single star. The people who work here have zero manners, and, frankly, are total jerks. If you want the basic truth read Kevin M.'s review down there somewhere. The pizza, the pizza she is good. The service, er not so much. If there is any kind of rush it will be chaos. Whatever time they tell you it will take for your pizza to be ready know that there is no hope it will be under 30 minutes (unless they're dead). If you get there and there's a line know that your pie will probably not be ready. Also if you see pies come out of the oven go ahead an ask if you're number has come up. I have had it happen enough times that the pie will be out but they don't check to see if anyone is waiting. But back to the good. The pies are tasty, big, and cheap. The olives are excellent. The pepperoni is excellent. The mushrooms are canned. Use this knowledge to your advantage. The frozen pastas, sauces, etc. are excellent. Keep some on hand for quick meals. read more

This is the best pizza in DC, and possibly the world. They put the sauce on top of the cheese. Don't freak out. The cheese is underneath. The service isn't always the best, but it doesn't matter, because they could punch me in the face and I would still go back loyally (for the record, they've never punched me in the face, the service is actually pretty good). In conclusion: I love Vace's, as does everyone who has ever eaten pizza there, because it's the best. Oh my gawd, I almost forgot to mention that the baklava is THE BEST I've ever had also. Finally got the opportunity to try out yelper favorite Vace the other day and I have to say it lives up to the hype. My plain cheese slice was divine, so I can't imagine what a good spinach and feta would be like. Yum! The pastas, meat, and cheeses that they were selling all looked incredible and I'll definitely be back here soon to pick up some goodies. When I'm in the mood for takeout gourmet pizza I usually make my way to Two Amy's, but with a little more experimentation Vace *might* take that top spot. I carried this pizza for 20 minutes in 95 degree heat from Cleveland Park to Adams Morgan, and I tell you, I would do it again. The crispy, flaky crust survived the hike beautifully thanks to placement of the sauce on top of the cheese. And can you say cheap??? With the money I saved, I bought a frozen lasagna to take home with me. I'll let you know how that goes. It seems I'm making bad decisions on the days I choose to consume Vace. I decided yesterday, again in 95 degree heat, to make the lasagna. Well, it takes 2 hours in a 450 degree oven to bake. Needless to say my place was HOT before it was done, even with the air conditioner blasting. So, I stripped down to my drawers and dug in. Delicious is the only word to describe it! I have patronized Vace for going on two decades and will do so until a sinkhole swallows the place. Even now, living 100 miles away, I will make a point to stop there when I roll through DC. Why? Because this place is the real deal. Thin pizza that has all 3 major components right: crust, sauce & cheese. Crust - crispy, browned & tasty. Sauce - NOT sugary, yet full of tomato taste & tang. Cheese - real mozzarella, not greasy, and best of all placed atop the crust (below the sauce). Vace does it RIGHT! Slices are dirt cheap and service is quick even when there's a line to the door. Please be considerate to the folks that work here and put something in the tip jar! Vace also has an Italian deli and great dry goods selection that you would be hard-pressed to find to find anywhere shy of the northeast. You can get awesome hand-made thin crust (good-chewy, not rubbery-chewy) pizza slice to go. Usually 4-5 kinds of pizza you can choose from. A lady at the cashier might remind you of 'Soup-nazi' character from the Seinfeld episode but she is actually nice. If you don't know what yo want, you can ask questions and take your time to figure out what you want, but just don't stand at the cashier to make others wait. I didn't see how they were selling a slice, so I asked the lady. She said '$1.75 +tax'. Then, she added 'it's $1.87 with tax'. I smiled at her and so did she. Done. I quickly said 'white pizza with onion', 'plain pizza (aka. cheese pizza', 'white pizza with spinach'. She said I could use credit card as long as it was over $5. She asked 'want me to heat up the slices?', I said 'No thank you'. Then, unexpectly, she smiled again. She seems cold-shell but I felt she was nice. I thought to mention this because you might give bad review if you are not used to fast-pace service and you might think she is rude. If you can handle chipotle-like order-procedure (Quick-step) (think Quick, choose what you want Quick, say your choice to the server Quick and move to next Quick). No place to eat inside. White pizza has no sauce or pesto. It had cheese and one topping. I'm not a big fan of onion but the Onion pizza was really good. With its trademark thin crust and sweet tomato sauce on top, Vace easily has my favorite pizza in DC, and possibly anywhere. Since many of you already agree with me on this, I will then put in an extra plug for the white pizza (no sauce). I didn't think I would like it as much without that fantastic sauce, but it was every bit as dee-lish. **Update**: I almost wanted to take off a star because my last few visits subjected me to such unbearably long waits. But - I'm won over again after buying their pre-made dough and pizza sauce (combined total of $4.50) and created the pizza at home with my own cheese and toppings. Living for a year in Cleveland Park, there was not a week when I did not trek over for my favorite concoction: a large white pizza with onions and kalamata olives (kalamata: regular black olives :: New York Times : USA Today). Happiness, for one night, was a thin crust pizza running at about the price of a movie ticket these days. I'll be honest, I fell so hard for the pizza that I never tried Vace's well-known pastas or sandwiches, but I can't say I regret my single-track focus on the pizza. I read the reviews for Vace and was really excited to try it. I love boutique ethnic markets! But I was a little underwhelmed. There isn't a large selection of groceries, and most of the products are available at my local grocery store. My boyfriend and I thought we could find some yummy olive oil and vinegar, but Harris Teeter has a more authentic selection. We tried the spinach and cheese agnelloti, which were okay but nothing special. I usually like fresh pasta rather than raviolis, but since everyone on yelp seemed to rave about the stuffed pasta, we got the agnelloti. I've definitely had better. The meat sauce and the tomato sauce were good, although I recommend getting their homemade Italian Sausage and adding it to the sauces. The meat sauce doesn't have a lot of meat in it AND the sausage was by far the best purchase we made. Although we didn't try the pizza, I think we got a comprehensive impression of what Vace has to offer. What I really appreciated was that our whole huge dinner last night was less than $20! Excuse me?! When the total tallied up to $19 I felt a mix of guilt and glee. Holy crap- did we just get away with robbery? read more

With all these fellow Yelpers raving about Vace's "amazing pizza" with the SAUCE ON TOP, over the cheese - and all at a great value - I just knew my world wouldn't be complete until I tried it. Little did I know that I was in for THIS much of a treat. First of all, I had to rub my eyes and blink a lot and make that cartoonish "a-gargh-ga-ga-blah" noise to make sure I was seeing clearly. The 14" medium pie was only $7.50; and the 16" large was $9.00! "These are 80's prices!" my astonished man exclaimed. VH1 isn't the only one who loves the 80's. Too bad they don't have any seating. But I guess that's what keeps those prices. As we waited for our 1/2 sausage and fresh tomato, 1/2 mushroom and onion pizza, we perused their yummy "frozen fresh" section. I'm not a fan of frozen food, but I'd definitely do it from Vace. As we waited, a huge line formed; I guess this isn't exactly a hidden secret. And after tasting the pizza, I could see why. The thin, crispy crust and fresh ingredients were delicious together! The sauce on top thing keeps the crust from getting soggy, even by the next day. I'm a crust eater when the crust is good... and there was no leftover crust to be seen. I'll be a regular at Vace, even when I want to just grab a slice. *Tip: Prosciutto isn't listed as a topping on their board, but it is one. So go ahead and order it. read more

I've driven by this place a bunch of times, never in a million years would I have stopped in there. Thanks to Yelp I finally found a place for great pizza! It's not the most attractive place on the planet. Actually it's kinda intimidating in it's average aesthetic, however when I saw all the people standing around waiting for their orders I knew it had to be good. I ordered a few slices to go and for $1.50 a slice you can hardly beat the price. My intention was to save some for tomorrow, but that didn't exactly happen. I asked for a menu, and it says if you want a full pizza call 20-30 minutes before pick up. After eating that pizza it's safe to say I'll be back to try other things. Their fresh frozen pastas looked very interesting. One amusing thing was I saw two boys playing in the barrels of dried pasta with the scoop near the front counter. They got a tongue lashing from their mother in front of everyone, and the kids refused to believe that people actually ate what they were messing around in. I work down the street from Vace. The Cleveland Park/Woodley Park area is totally horrible for lunch options. Vace is usually my savior. The spinach and onion pizza are my two favorites. The cheese and pepperoni are not. I've also bought their pizza dough, pastas, and prosciutto and have been happy with the results. The staff can be a little brusque or inefficient at times. But if you go there enough, Celeste will thaw a little and stop being so mean to you and will usually make your sub from scratch rather than hand you the ones that sit out on the counter all day. read more

One more vote of extreme confidence- the price is right, the food amazing, and the atmosphere charming. Pizza: By the slice a great deal, I've had their pepperoni and their white with onions both were great. Crispy bottom, delicious crust. We did our first full pie take out last night- equally amazing. Still being a little weirded out by the whole sauce on top I ordered a large pepperoni with extra cheese - next time I will withold the extra cheese. Don't get me wrong- it was amazing but frankly I just need to chill on the cheese (but it soo good!). Best of all 1 large (granted we had our own veggies on the side) was perfect for me, my boyfriend and his roommate (both of whom are big eaters). Pasta: We bought the veal agnolotti and their tomato sauce. The pasta is light and airy the way you want it to me, the taste rich, and the sauce simple but perfect. It was a completely easy but delicious dinner. Sandwiches: We've only had the italian sub - it was great. And amazing value for the price. Chorizo: how could i forget?? The only place I know in DC outside of Eastern Market where you can get deli slices of chorizo cantimpalo and for like 5.99/lb or something similar. GO GO GO and eat everything in sight! read more

After all these years I still hate Vace. The pizza was good and had a nice choice of toppings, but the logistics of making pizza was apparently the equivalent of manned space flight. Every way they could f up an order, they did: Having a long wait for pizza to finish, waiting while my pizza got cold because they were making seven different sandwiches for fat zoo tourists, and didn't have anyone to handle my pick up. Finally the coup de gras, I went there and they hadn't even started my pizza. I gave up and started using Armand's on-line ordering. read more
