I've driven by the V Room on countless occasions but never thought to stop. It's not exactly walking distance from my place as I live closer to the Reno Room. However, it was referred to me by a friend who takes pride in a good drink made properly. I had yelped some of the reviews and, for the most part, everyone ranted and raved about it being the perfect 'neighborhood bar' complete with all the sightings of such a place, namely, every kind of patron, cheap but stiff drinks and good music. I stopped in and, at first glance, it appeared like any other 'dive bar.' Low lighting, worn decor, some classic rock playing (but not too loud), a variety of patrons glued to the bar and some pool tables in the back. I sat at the bar and was engaged by the enchanting bartender, Melanie. Let me stop here and say that, if you never get to experience Melanie in her zone (and have a drink made by her), your life is the poorer for it. She works that bar like a scene from the movie Cocktail. She knows her stuff... she knows the patrons... hell, she knows YOU and your likes BETTER than you know yourself. In fact, this is the kind of girl that one would think was kicked out of heaven for being a roughneck and yet, is idolized by the OTHER angels. When one patron had a bit too much to drink, I watched Melanie walk across the street... buy him a burrito (with her own money, mind you), and brought it back. She made sure he ate it and was escorted (i.e., walked) home by some other patrons at the bar who had known him. Who does that?!?!?! In addition to being bewitched, bothered and bewildered by Melanie, I also enjoyed the friendly patrons who had no problem starting a conversation with me, a total stranger. Even bought me a drink. This bar is truly a 'neighborhood bar' but is welcoming to those who are NOT part of that group. At the end of the day, these fine folk just came to enjoy a stiff drink, some friendly conversation and the magic that is the Melanie. I've gone on too long already so I'll end by saying this: I travel around the country quite a bit... been in MANY bars and had MANY drinks. Do yourself a favor and stop in. The drinks are CHEAP but made better than most places in Long Beach... And do so when Melanie is there. She is what a bartender (and human being) should be: Skilled, passionate and heartfelt... but don't f*ck with her because she's a badass too. Thanks V Room! I'll be back! Ps. Waited patiently at bar, but would not get served, even though there were only six people. I was quietly waiting, not looking impatiently at my watch and tapping my foot, nor staring her down, nor waving money. I did not pretend to be extremely thirsty, nor did I drag myself across the floor like I was in a desert, nor did I open up a canteen and pour out sand. I did not use silly string to produce cartoon-like cobwebs that stuck me to the bar, nor did I replace myself with a skeleton when she wasn't looking. I did nothing like that, yet I didn't get a "I'll be right with you", no eye contact... I doubt she'd even fart in my direction even if I had on the biggest "Fart Target" shirt available at Spencer's. She just would not serve me, much less acknowledge my existence, and it may have been because my brother looks like a 49 1/2 yr old dorky tourist (he is) who asked aloud, "What does the V stand for?", or because the place has the only "locals only" vibe I've ever gotten in my 22 years in long beach, but it stinks either way. Why yes I will give this dive bar 5 stars.. why you ask! Because this place is awesome!!! New Years 2013 12:25am, 2nd stop of the night and I loved it as soon as I walked in.. also made me jealous that a place I felt so comfortable with was so far away from home for me. It seems some of the crowd has cleared so we scored two seats at the bar and proceeded to get some down good services considering it was only 2 beautiful tattooed ladies tending bar to a very large crowd with only one women's' bathroom I was told( that's never good) However the prices and the drinks where made very well and I enjoyed the characters in this joint. As we left the parking lot ( yes we actually found parking) I was thinking I have to come back here once again... I don't know if it's me but I noticed that Cash Only bars seems to be the most fun laid back bars I've enjoyed. read more

I really like the V Room...it's been my go to bar for awhile now. I always like to get started here and then hit up the other bars along the road till I hit Ferns. I appreciate the fact that it has a parking lot and places to sit. Haven't had a problem finding either one of those things the last 4 times I've been there. The prices are great but only thing that sucks is that it's a cash only bar. So hit up the ATM before you head here!! read more

The V room is the first of many watering holes on Fourth street. The place has gone through many iterations, but notably, the 2010 re-modeling saw the vintage 1975 wall carpet, textured ceiling, and dated lighting go away. Now walls in the game room are wood paneled, the ceiling has a muted black matte finish and the room lighting is pleasantly updated. What a difference. Here is the good news ... Usually when a place updates the facility, business experts wrongly recommend raising prices to compensate for the expenditure. The V-room has kept their price structure intact and made the loyal clientele happy. This is one of the best managed places in Long Beach and as a comparison, all one would have to do is walk two blocks towards the beach and experience three times the price structure for the same beverage products ... The poor lost owner of that establishment has commented several times "where did all the regulars go?". On to the service; Candace, Michelle, Lauren, Melanie, Sam, and Ritchie run a tight ship. The service is prompt, accurate, timely, and customer focused. What is nice is the afternoon happy hour events are not too crazy with people and one can have a good conversation with the patrons and bar keeps. Recently one of the patrons posed a question "Who was the best hitting pitcher in the major league?" quickly the astute smart phone enthusiast drubbed up the local favorite of Orel Hershiser who batted in the mid 300's for one season. As oft happens, the internet being digital input driven does not included information that has not been entered in the net. One of the intellectual gold mines (Tom) asked "Hey, how about George Herman Ruth? He was a starting pitcher for Boston for six years before he was traded to the Yankees (batting average over 300 and a slugging percentage above 550.) He batted so well on the Yankees that manager Miller Huggins pulled him from the pitching rotation and set him in the outfield so he could bat in every game" So Game, Win and Match goes to Tom ... Sorry Bill G and dub Steve's, the computer age does not have all the statistics imported yet..... Also, if you want to watch a sporting event on a Saturday or Sunday, here is a great place to hang out. Plenty of TV's are tuned to many different telecasts. For those that are along for the "sports/event ride", Sam is a great conversationalist with a surprising vast knowledge and experience. She is like a local but more sophisticated version of Kelly Ripa. They both have a perky sense of humor and personality galore. However, Kelly's content is "G rated" at best and is sanitized for the public audience (ughhh boring). So ... like the Jeopardy game show with Alex Trebek asking what is your next category? ... Give me Sam and unplugged Q and A for 20 bucks .... And the answer is "what is a great time" read more

Very cool bar with the interior very circus-y, freak-show like. (V for Voodoo?) I personally think it's great. Drink menu was jam packed with very interesting and tasty drinks. I love margaritas and I adore jalapeno margaritas too! Perfect. Saw that they had a breakfast shot with a side of bacon... would definitely come back to try it sometime. My boyfriend tends to judge places on how they make their Old Fashioned and he liked the way the female bartender made it, awesome! There are two pool tables, plenty of seating, and a cool crowd. Plus a nice juke box playing in the background. Perhaps the best bar on the 4rth Street crawl... I'm so glad it's on the opposite end if you start east at O'Connell's. The V Room is like the pot of gold, although you can get the whole rainbow if you end at Clancy's...if you know what I mean. I've always encountered friendly people of all types there, like the happy UFC fighter I met last night, whether it be around the non-aggressive pool tables or sitting at the bar itself. The bartenders there seem to mean business. Although, it used to be fun back in the day when you'd have to flash Raven your "headlights" to get yourself a drink....woohoo! The bouncer seemed to be entertained by the silliness of inebriated patrons and was nice enough to call my friends & I a cab for a seriously needed trip to Taco Bell. V Room is a local staple in Long Beach. It's dark, you can pick a corner and hide from the world or sit at the bar and meet some strangers. They have a few pool tables, cheap and stiff drinks, and a good beer selection. No complaints here, it is perfect for what it is. Caveat: one visit only This seems like it's one of the (currently) most popular dive bars on 4th. While we liked the place and enjoyed the big corner booth, it failed on more than a few counts, too. PROS: - Cool vibe, mixed crowd, more upbeat energy - Of all the places we went on 4th Street that night, this felt the least classically divey - Good music CONS: - Poor service. Too few bartenders, not friendly (prob b/c they were slammed.) - Of all the places we went that night, this place took the longest to get a drink (nearly 10 full min even though I was right at the bar) - So loud that the bartender and I couldn't hear each other (and dammit, I'm loud); after repeating my order twice, she still screwed up one of our four drinks (I requested a water; she gave me a Corona. Yeah, I know that's ALMOST water ;) - So loud that she couldn't hear me explain that I didn't order a Corona; after two attempts, I gave up trying, paid for the Corona and left it. VERDICT: Between Meh and A-OK so I'll be generous and give 3 stars. I'd probably go again if I were in the area, but I wouldn't make it a destination spot. read more

I'm absolutely broken-hearted even having to type this out and I apologize if it sounds long-winded but here goes: I had cash ($20) that I was trying to pay with deftly snatched from a bartender that wasn't serving me. Blonde gal- "Candice" was her name according to one of the other bartenders not working that night. My bartender (shorter, black haired lady) asked "Um... Did you even pay?" shortly after. I don't know if they were both in on it *cue X-Files theme* but I'd never had any problems prior with either girl. I was also 1 Pabst in so I know it wasn't in drunken stupor. Times ARE hard, but I never stiff on tips and swiping cash like that is some super shady business that future customers need to be warned about. In defeated fashion, I paid //again// with the 2nd $20 bill I withdrew from the ATM near the jukebox, looking all bummed and shit. I didn't say anything because I seriously thought the gal was helping charge me for her co-worker (and to be frank I get really bad anxiety from awkward situations like this one). I'm an easy-going dude. Non-confrontational, "mistakes happen" kind of guy. Hell- I can empathize because I've worked as a server for over a decade and I totally know how customers can be sometimes. Unfortunately though, this was inexcusable and even the homie next to me confirmed it afterwards just to hammer it home even more. I think it was more shock and disappointment rather than anger in all honesty. I was a regular here so it definitely blows (loved playing pool and seeing lots of friends on week nights). Any dollar I spend counts immensely, and I work my ass off throughout the week just to relax and buy drinks for my friends when I do get to go out, so I took it pretty personally. Anyways... If you do read this review and still go, just do yourself and your friends a gigantic favor by KEEPING AN EYE ON YOUR MONEY throughout the whole transaction. Seriously. If Wednesday night proved anything, it's that this can happen to anyone anywhere- Even at a local bar you frequent every week. It is a love it or leaves it kind of bar. It is a true dive with mostly locals. Good strong and cheap drinks and nice bartenders. I particularly love it when Yvonne and Nikki works. Mornings are the best time to attend. They open at 6 am and on weekends it gets packed by 7 am with people who just want to continue to party. I was a Reno Room girl for life.... once they whited that place up, I was gone. I had a friend invite me to The V Room. It was dark, it had a kick ass juke box, it was smokey, it had pool tables, it had clean bathrooms, it had cool bartenders. I was sold on the spot. I took me a while to return but when I did , it was like I was never away. The improvements in the place are awesome! New bar stools. No stinky, smoke-filled carpet! Just please don't turn up the lights, take away or change the juke box!!! FYI: Never, ever ask for a double unless you are a seasoned vet in drinking or you plan on a safe ride home! "Have you seen Pam lately?" seemed like a funny thing to say to David Denman, who plays Roy, Pam's ex-BF, on The Office (ahem. Thursday nights, check listings for show times)... who just happened to be drinkin' at the V Room Friday night. The V Room is surprising in that ya neva know who you'll see, what will happen, or how crowded it will be. It's one of my favorite dives in Long Beach. Even though Friday was unusually crowded... damn, you could hardly walk through the place without a sideways "Ess'cuse me" turn... we still managed to score seats at the far end of the bar. We'd started the evening elsewhere, but undoubtedly knew we'd end up at the V Room before we did... where else in Long Beach can ya order a Crown & Coke, Stoli & Cran, Stella, and a Miller Lite for $16? Ummm... heLLLOOOO....! No where! I don't even get hook ups at Alex's that are as good as this!! The only thing that blows is parking. Often you'll find yourself circling the block more than twice before finding a spot. God liked us Friday. We found parking quickly... but trust me, it doesn't happen often. In summary...it is becoming far too expensive to be a barfly these days. The V Room keeps it real. And earns a warm fuzzy in mah heart. read more

Recently, the V Room gave me the opportunity to catch up with an old friend. Five years ago this friend joined an already intoxicated group of people for a couple of beverages. Many drinks and a "van-taxi" later the friends reconvened at my small, yet respectable apartment in Long Beach. Even more alcohol was consumed and attendees began to pass out. During a recent trip to the "V" one friend reflected upon his actions that evening: "dude, I still feel bad for taking a dump on your kitchen floor that night. I don't even remember it. I am so sorry. Seriously, I'll be there to clean your kitchen whenever you need it cleaned. Just let me know." (While the V room is a great local bar, it can be difficult to reason with certain people who may frequent the place, enjoy your cheap beer, and not be horrified at the same time) Believe me, regression was the best option at the time. I would really love to forget about the poop on my kitchen floor and just move on. I couldn't eat there for two weeks. V room: Thanks for continually providing a place for both adolescent reflection and cheap ass drinks to placate the memories. The next time someone excretes on my floor, I can only hope to confront them on one of your comfy bar stools while consuming a can of dollar-fifty Busch beer. read more

Another dive bar on 4th street. Pool tables in the back. Tv's lining the bar that runs from one end of the space to the other. There's a strange nautical feel because of the decor - but it works. The drinks were cheap, as they tend to be in the dive bars in this area. The bartenders were quick and really attentive. It's always nice when the bartender notices there are people waiting in the wings, and they move the lingering customers along in order to serve more drinks. The vodka tonic was exactly as it should be. Definitely would consider coming back. Check the small parking lot in the back for a few empty spaces. if not, good luck finding street parking. read more

First stop on the inaugural Great 4th St Bar Crawl of 2012--a fun little thing my friends and I decided to do since we'd never been to any of the bars east of Pike Bar & Grill on 4th St. We loved the V Room--when we walked off a sunny sidewalk it was pitch black in there and The Clash was playing, a good start. Fun cheesy paintings everywhere and a row of locals with their butts planted firmly in front of the bar. Friendly bartendress who brought out pretzels for us with our drinks. My friends were sticking with gin drinks and me with beer: 2 gin and tonics (nice and stiff) and a bottle of Red Stripe was under $15, gotta love Long Beach prices. After reading the reviews, I was like hm, I guess I'll try this place out! Since I'm new to the neighborhood, I'm in the process of finding "the spot"...well I guess I'll have to keep looking. In order to not stick out in this bar you must have one or more of the following: a. multiple visible tattoos b. wearing mostly all black c. greaser style d. over 25 e. Be sort of a dirty hipster (make sense?) f. it helps to be white & dirty blonde (just saying, my friend was the only asian in the bar & I was the only Mexican) I unfortunately did not fall under any of those categories & nor did the people I came with. In addition, there is no where to sit! And when a spot opened up near the Pac Man video table this woman just gave my friends and I the dirtiest look ever! Jesus, what did I do lady?! I ain't tryin to steel your man or anything...just trying to sit my ass down. Ugh. So if you do plan on coming here, park on the street (the lots small) and remember to wear mostly all black, leopard (for the ladies) and at least a plaid shirt for the guys or rock tee. Had I not gone to the V Room on Saturday, I would have probably given it 4 stars. I walked down here with Manfriend, my friend Sanchez, and her man after being at the Pike for a bit... we showed up, and its was completely packed. I had never seen it so crammed in my life. First off, the girls had to pee, and the restroom line was about 10 ladies deep, so we decided to just walk in the dudes room. Some scum bag in there offered us drugs right off the bat. Come on man, I'm just here to hold the door for my friend while she uses the facilities. Manfriend walked in the bathroom soon thereafter, and I wish I had my camera out to take a picture of his face when he saw me and Sanchez in the stall. I got a scolding afterwards, which was well-deserved. Using the mens room at the V ROOM probably wasn't the best idea.. but whoever has their best ideas when out drinking? ;) Then we walked over to get some drinks... and from what I hear, the bartender was a total a-hole to my friend. Which I found pretty weird, usually the bartenders are really cool and mellow. Whatever the deal was, it caused us to pretty much be over the place after about 15 minutes. What a shame. here's a more helpful review, perhaps, because even though i lost this bar in a friendship divorce (which kinda sucks, since it's been my bar for over fifteen years), i still love it, and it's due a proper review from me. the atmosphere here is fantastic. it's dark and dank and smells like a proper dive bar should - like old drunks, stale cigarette smoke (which wafts in from outside), whiskey, and ten thousand spilled beers. the jukebox is fantastic, loaded with everything from billy idol to t-rex to wanda jackson. i think the only thing it's missing is iggy, though i wouldn't swear to that. the bartenders are awesome - friendly, knowledgeable, engaging; exactly like a good bartender should be. if you're looking to be left alone, they'll do that. if you're in the mood to crack wise, they'll do that too. and if you wanna do the usual dive bar thing and cry into your shots of well tequila, they're happy to listen. that's, of course, when it's slow. when it's busy (and oh, it DOES get busy on weekends), you can still look for them to be friendly and patient, even as they expertly tend to a bar packed to bursting with everything from oldtimer regulars to cute rockabilly girls and everything in between. the pool tables are cheap and effective. the bathrooms are small and smelly and though they paint over the grafitti, it always returns (again - exactly as it should be). if you're a newcomer you might find the vibe off-putting at first, because when you walk in for the first time it certainly does feel like a regular's bar, and everyone WILL probably turn to look at you (assuming it's not a friday or saturday night after 9p), but i assure you, there's nothing exclusive about this joint at all. there are no airs put on here, either by patrons or by staff, and you'll find yourself feeling like one of the family within 20 minutes, if it takes even that long. cash only, as mentioned repeatedly, but there's an atm in the corner with a reasonable withdrawal fee. all in all, if you find yourself in the lbc and in the mood for a good dive, this is the first, second, and third place i'd recommend. and if you're a local and haven't been here, stop what you're doing, grab a friend or two (or not, because you can totally do this place alone), and get over there. my absolute favorite bar in town. i miss it, and am unlikely to stay away for much longer. oh, and by the way, if you find yourself needing a drink on a sunday morning for some reason, go here. order a breakfast shot. i await the influx of compliments. read more

V Room - Spicy Margarita :) - Pubs Near Me - Long Beach, California

When I was a young and tenderoni, I would make my way down 4th street -- hitting Ferns, the Red Room then the V Room. The V Room wasn't as populated as it these days. The crowd bares a huge difference from that of Ferns and the Red Room. I would say mellow alternative-folk lookin for a good cheap stiff one. The atmosphere is laid-back and the crowd is mostly unpretentious. The juke box has improved quite a bit, adding some good punk rock and rock n roll into the play list. And they still have Fleetwood Mac and Journey for those of us who love the classic rock. The drinks are extremely cheap and you are almost guaranteed to leave not knowing your name or the person you re with! There ain't no tabs at this joint, but they do have an ATM machine right inside. There's a pool table and plenty of booth like seating for you to congregate with your pals. The parking is not ideal at this place only because its a tight spot and it almost looks like it would be an obstacle course just trying to get out of there at 2:00am!! Remember, there are plenty of cabs around the LBC! Save yourself the DUI and get a 5 dollar cab ride! Or walk your happy ass down to the other cool bars up the street! read more

Came here last night with a rather large group.. I recall the cab ride from the Pike to the V Room... I recall the cabby getting pulled over and given a ticket..... I recall getting here but after two Makers shots and a Kettle Soda I only recall having a conversation with some dude about medicine. He was a pre-med student and I went to school for nursing prior to deciding to become a hairstylist.. I recall talking about neurology with him.. Kind of funny to have a drunken conversation about something that requires concentration. In fact I think I am still drunk.....
