It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

Old school neighborhood bar. Two freshly re-felted pool tables for 50 cents. Free shuffleboard that is actually maintained. Very diverse crowds that range from long shore men to retirees to college kids to college dropouts. The last hour seems to be the busiest and seems quite popular with the food service industry. Last call is at 1:15 and they gradually get more aggressive to get you out the door by 1:30. It can be quite shocking being used to a two o clock kick out time. I have watched the Lakers, Dodgers and Blackhawks games here. The crowds are not overwhelming and the bartender will turn on just about any game you want. In the past year there have been quite a few changes with the tragic loss of Rocket, and Bob leaving. The new bartenders are friendly and help provide a stimulating, positive experience, and are accommodating. It is a cash only bar and the bartenders are sticklers for following the ABC laws, so be prepared. read more

You know, I just moved to the down town Long Beach area. Now, this is a total experience at times. I found this bar one night and went in for a beer or two. What I saw was so interesting, I kept coming back. I saw young people and older, getting along just fine. No arguments or asshole chicks who think their shit don't stink. The girls here were way cool. The crowd was mellow, partying hard and really cool. The man behind the bar was great. He looks like a football player or something. Drinks were reasonable, no assholes (like other bars on 4th Street) and really nice people. Even the older guy who was in the Marine Corp was way cool. I will go there again and take my friends. I now have found a bar. By the way, the drink I was drinking was a "Modified Guiness". A couple of these and you are doing just fine. read more

Women beware. Some female yelpers seem to have luck here but I've only encountered douche bag men and really rude staff. I've given it many shots since it's just around the corner from my place, but I've had enough nights ruined that I won't be going back. Too bad I still have the pleasure of experiencing street harassment from all the hick guys who stand outside when I walk to the restaurant across the street. The worst experience on St. Patricks Day. Bouncer, John or whatever his name was is extremely rude, woman beater and a poor excuse if a human being treated women with no regards. If you want to get into a fight, this is your spot. What ever happened to treat people with kindness? It's a place of business which should be shut down. We stopped in O'Connell's after some time away (like 4 months) due to illness and the brith of our first child. We came to find out that our favorite bartender was not there. The man who was working did nothing but bad mounth him and said he was nothng more than....well, that's another story. The big mouthed older man at the end of the bar (grey hair, chubby) said he was the owner and was quite rude, and yes, mean to most everyone. Without Bob, this place now sucks. I don't recall trying any food here, but their drinks are stiff with plenty of beer on tap. No fancy, craft cocktails, but good ol' classic cocktails we used to get for cheap at the Red Room. If you are hungry, the kitchen is open till 10pm serving up burgers, fries, hot dogs, salads, Mexican food and vegan items. The bartenders are cool af. Be sure to tip them!

I am recently sober and just wanted to play pool. I've never been greeted this way at this establishment. He told us to leave or buy a drink. We kindly told him to fuck off and unfortunately I will never step foot in this bar ever again. Our close friend passed away recently and they are having a Remembrance Birthday but unfortunately I will not be attending because I'm appalled at the way we were treated. You've lost my partner, me, and our friends as neighborhood customers and I will continue to tell friends and family not to go to this bar. Never seen this bartender in all my time of going here and hope I never see him again in my life. Sorry to the bartenders I've built good relationships with but do yourself a favor find another bar that will treat you like a community because this will never be the one.

After all, a wise man once said that "the only color a business should see is green" it was-- Frederick Douglas or Kermit? Anyway... If I had bothered to read the reviews, I may have been discouraged to enter. Half of the reviews mention "stabbing" and half mention "hookers", which would lead me to believe that El Paraiso is Spanish for "the knife-wielding prostitute". Instead I read the reviews while checking in, where I wrote the tip, "This place is only scary to people who get scared. Show respect to others and you"ll get it back. We're all brothers and sisters just trying to drown out or celebrate our meaningless lives." I was drunk when I wrote that-- so drunk that I might have had, in fact, a knife in me at the time-- but I'll stand by it. Not too crowded at 11pm on a Friday night, a DJ blasting music in Spanish, we slid up to the comfortable bar and met Emilia, a sweet lady who offered a shot of Patron for the birthday boy. We got a few looks from the locals, so I did feel a little like an elephant at a donkey park (weird analogy, I know, but "black guy eating pho" seemed racist). Like any new dive, I just avoided looking too long at a girl so I didn't get the ol' "qué estás mirando?" with an upside down question mark from some hombre. Or chick with an ombre. My six vodka and cranberry drinks were bright red, usually a sign of a weak drink, but the drink was served in a tall glass instead of a lowball, so I'm assuming it had the right pour but with more juice. ( I guess I could have asked for "less juice" in Spanish, but I probably would have said "games hands" or "little ghost" instead and THAT, mi amigos, is what gets you stabbed.) I ordered six grey goose and crans (I learned "OTRO!" at my first Mexican party- my friend told me "OTRO!" meant "CHEERS" so I kept trying to explain to the hostess that I didn't want another shot as she kept pouring them because I kept shouting "OTRO!" followed by "No, no, no, I didn't want another...oh fine".) They were only $7.50 which is cheap. That leaves quite enough money for gauze for all the stab wounds. So, anyway, how was the crowd? The only trouble we saw was a small fight that broke out at the end, but that could be anywhere (Emilia kicked him out). I mean 36/36 has more shady people. Met some nice, friendly, funny regulars (Ivan and Blanca). One guy stared at me. I didn't feel like I could totally be my silly self, like handing a wrapped stick of gum to the birthday boy with my mouth. That move seems pretty stab worthy. El Paraiso. A cut above the rest. I have been to this place in the past and I never really thought much of it, until I spend a Sunday…read moreafternoon in their patio and understood the varied wonders that this place held for many a bloke, including me and maybe even a tourist from Alabama. The draw for this place on this Sunday afternoon was their music band: Rayford Bros. I took a video of one the members singing Pretty Woman Walking down the Block. Hard to believe but I have never seen the flick, and I have never really heard the song. But both were familiar because how can one not know Pretty Woman in song and movie, unless they are a newborn or a not too old infant. So it was cool hearing music that I was familiar with. Because if it was a Guns and Roses or My Chemical Romance my ear would have not been able to name that tune, and I think that would have not permitted me from having a good time. I took care to take a picture of their calendar, that was outside in the patio, to ensure that they had a record to consult if they wanted to hear the warbling of the Tres Hombres that are next on deck. The music, though, it created an environment that rocked with joy and crowd. There was a couple-- octogenerians, I think. With all due respect to them, they were in their sunset years, but, if I get to be old like them, I would consider my life worth its billion steps. This couple were dressed like 50's inspired rockers. They were dancing, setting the patio floor ablaze. The woman tried to jump on the arms of the gray-haired rocker to do that move where she swings from one side to the other, while her legs kick the air. She jumped. But there was no kicking or swinging. But she jumped. That kind of movement on the dance floor is the meaning of dance like no one is watching all while knowing that an audience is present watching the blind dance! The crowd formed outside due to the music. A mom and dad danced with their kid. They could have held a different story but I went with what I assumed to be traditional because there were was enough visual evidence that they were a tranditional man-wife-kid couple. The dog was missng. I wanted to sit in the patio. There were no open tables. I asked a solo diner if me and my friend Conrad could share his talbe and he said yes. A small act of kindness that made my day better. The drink and food was also all worthy of gold stars. I approached the bartender and apparently one has to order food and drink from him I told him my spirit of choice and the fact that I liked sweet drinks. He concocted me a menu item--- a cucumber watermelon mixture, I think that was super great and refreshing! Which was nice because this particular restaurant sits by the water. So a breezy drink seemed more appropriate for the envirnonment. The stranger who we sat with, shared his mozzarella sticks with us. Superb. They were perfectly browned and not like a cylender shape more like a three-dimensional design. I had their loaded tate tots and they were garbage food in the best possible way. The fried goodness of the top had all these layers of flavor--- cream, mustard, chives. And then once topped with pastrami that was thick and cut all super well it became fit for Oscar the Grouch. I think that is the sesame Character that lives in a trash can. Junk food dismisses the value of hearty and greasy food calling the best garbage food paints food that was retreieved from a dumpster and made it to a bounty for the gut. My friend Conrad had a BLTA. I tasted the BLTA and the bacon is the stuff one dreams about---- the type of bacon that makes people go wow this bacon is thick in a real way. It is not thick in I am flattering myself for clout and likes kind of way. True pleasure to enjoy, and I only had one bite. But sometimes a bite is enough to understand the promise of the whole sandwich, that in this case was cut in half. The pool table was empty which seemed odd because I have never actually seen that in a pub, at least, not in recent memory.
