It's been almost 20 years since we've been coming to the Auld Dubliner (aka the auld Dub). When we first heard the rumblings that the infamous Irish Pub Company was building a new Irish local, we couldn't wait for its opening. And since we first walked through the doors, we were in love. In love with the atmosphere, the perfectly pulled pints, the food (Dear God the Corned Beef Sandwich is a religious experience! ) and the characters of the staff. We've spent many occasions and life's moments here as well, From birthday dinners to at one time making it out Sunday Supper place to catch a traditional set and our dinner. The Sunday musicians are so good back in 2012 we hired a few to play at our engagement party, and brought a bit of the Auld Dub into our home. Today was no different, popped In for a family birthday celebration and stayed for a Sunday set. The music was fabulous the food amazing and the staff excellent! Ordered the usual: Curry Chips (cooked extra Well Done), and the best corned beef sandwich this side of the Atlantic! It's served perfectly on a crunchy swirled rye bread with an amazing apple jam of apples and caramelized onions. Just excellent! It was ok. Got the bangers and mash. The sausage was pretty good. Also got a corned beef and an ahi taco. Ahi taco kinda sucked and the corned beef taco didn't taste like corned beef. They had Kilkenny, which I haven't seen here in the States, only other place I've ever seen it was overseas. It would have been a three star but they had Kilkenny! Right across from the Long Beach Convention Center, the Auld Dubliner (located in the Pike Place Shopping Center) provides an authentic Irish Pub experience for locals and conventioneers, alike. Our group of three had a chance to stop in for lunch after catching a movie, and it ended up being a good experience, albeit pretty expensive. They don't have lunch specials, so expect to pay around $20 - $30 per person before tax/tip. (Happy Hour is after 3). Our small group had varied tastes, so decided to try various things to share. Our server was gracious in giving us extra plates. Fish & Chips ($24) - battered & fried haddocks with hand-cut chips & cole slaw. It was one giant piece of haddock filet, covered in an excellent batter. It's SO greasy, but had been deep fried very well, and an excellent example of a British fish fry, for sure. The fries were quite a bit thinner than chips I've had before, similar to any well deep fried fries at any fast casual restaurant. The cole slaw was fine. Beef Dip ($20) - really liked the bread, soft enough to easily eat without dipping, but sturdy enough to eat quickly if dipping is your thing. The meat was OK...thought it was sliced a bit thick, and there wasn't that much of it. Irish Nachos ($16) - for the price, thought it would be quite a bit better It was beautifully made, but basically nacho meatless toppings on top of the same generic fries. They do have a list of traditional British favorites, including Scotch egg, Gunness beef stew, and shepherd's pie. None of which really hit our fancy, so perhaps would be better to get those unique items vs more standard items that most restaurants have. read more

My friends and I were looking for a place to grab some food and drinks before heading to the queen mary dark harbor event. We decided to give this place a try. At the front of the entrance there was a sign that says, grab a menu and find a seat. We came here on a Saturday evening around 5pm. Our server took our order once we were seated. Two of my friends and I had the fish and chips and my other friend had the pub burger. The fish and chips was okay. The tartar sauce didn't have much flavor. Came here for lunch during Day #1 of my conference across the street. I ordered the Half and Half, the Guinness BBQ Burger and Champ. The beer is always yummy (big Guinness Fan!) the burger was juicy and the BBQ sauce was yummy. I just wished there were more sauce (I like a lot). Overall good experience. They definitely do things differently here. Our server seemed overwhelmed. I want to say she was probably the only one on the floor taking orders. Came on a Tuesday night before going to see a play/musical. I noticed they had a large group of people there for Trivia night. Although she seemed overwhelmed she handled it very well. The Shepherds Pie was a 7/10. Tasted like a shepherds pie. Nothing special about it. Hit the spot though. The Fish and Chips was a 6/10. Would have liked more meat. Would probably not order this again. I'm not going to shift blame on our server. She was busy. I felt they should have had more servers on the floor or at least helped her when they noticed how busy she got. We waited some time to get greeted. Thereafter, we waited long to get her attention to order a second drink. The food service on the other hand was fast. Like, a little too fast. I was wondering how they cooked these dishes that fast. A pretty solid pub right outside the Long Beach convention center! Our party went out for a lunch during our visit and we all enjoyed our time here!! It was pretty funny how everyone got the fish and chips aside from myself, but I have a personal tradition of always ordering the shepherds pie whenever my family goes out to a dine in pub. It's my soul food and I'm always curious to see how the different houses do it! While portioned small, the shepherds pie was mighty, super filling and yet light on the palette! This spot is right across from the convention center so very convenient if you are there. There are so many chains nearby because of the outlet shops so this is a good alternative. It's a great neighborhood bar. If you want an experience of fancy or trendy atmosphere or drinks, this is not the place. Parking: If you're coming anytime before 9pm then you'll most likely park at the public parking lot across the str eetand walk over. After 9pm, you won't need to pay for the parking meter. There are live band performances on Friday - Sunday. A fair amount of people usually dance in front of the band stage. Even around 11-12pm, 75 -90% seats are filled up. Midori Sour: Great drink. It's more on the sweeter side than sour. Midori sour mostly is made with Midori melon liqueur, vodka, lemon juice, lime juice and paired with sweet cherry. Every bar might have different concoctions. Tater tots (bacon and cheddar): tater tots were crispy and topped with melted chedder and bits of bacon. The best dish overall. Highly recommend to share. Calamari: Batter texture was a bit soft side. The standard amount of calamari was served. Chicken tenders and fries: Fries were overly salted. Chicken tenders were a bit dry. What a cute and homelike Irish pub! This a def a local favorite! First time here and it was a vibe! Service was a bit slow but only for a short while. There were changing the beer kegs ?? Def recommend their Kilkenny Irish cream Ale! So tasty! If you're into Irish whiskey and would like to branch out from the typically known whiskeys in the market this is the place. Popped in last night for a quick bite before a movie. Never hit 1/2 price Whiskey Wednesday. The selection was great and I did the Uncle Nearest which is from Nashville. The story goes that the whiskey maker for Jack Daniels was a former slave and his talent is now showcased at the Uncle Nearest Distillery. If you're in that area, you should visit both. The Uncle Nearest 1856 at 100 proof went down smoothly. But I broke from tradition and ordered a Corned Beef Sandwich versus the Shepherd's Pie (my friend still got it). So AWESOME. You know when you try something new you can get burnt. But since Auld Dubliner has not disappointed me yet with their Scottish Egg (so good and not greasy or heavy), Bread Pudding (also so light but creamy and sweet) and Shepherd's Pie made with savory lamb that I threw caution to the wind! The corned beef was slice thin and was lean. I can barely remember the slaw that was in the sandwich as I gobbled it down so quickly. The rye bread was grilled perfectly! And BEST OF ALL, the tater tots (I didn't do the calorie splurge and just got them plain) were TOASTY HOT. I can't tell you how frustrated I am with places that serve barely warm fries, etc. I love this place. It's in my neighborhood and fantastic. Funny enough, despite living relatively down the street, I'd just assumed it was a generic "Irish pub" for years, until I read an article last year claiming that Auld Dubliner had the best fish & chips in the city - that put it on my map, obviously, and I had to try them to check out the claim. Of course, when I saw they had a solid happy hour (weekdays until 6), I made sure to be there for it. The bar area was fairly raucous when I got there, but they have a much quieter front patio, so we ordered and then sat there. Between the two of us, we shared: an order of fish & chips (was $22, looks like it's up to $24 now), an a happy hour-priced order of calamari, mac & cheese balls, and 6 fried oysters (two orders). Zero problem with service or food speed - everything came out about as quickly as you'd expect it to. That said, I don't think I'd want to argue that the fish & chips were the best in the city - they were quite good, probably a bit better than England Fish & Chips', but also like 3x more expensive, and definitely not 3x better. They were very good, though. I *would* definitely recommend their happy hour, though - also wasn't the best calamari I'd ever had, but it was quality, and a great price during happy hour. Same with the mac & cheese balls - and good fried oysters are *hard* to find in Long Beach, so there's a lot less competition there (I'm not a fan of oysters unless they're super fried, which theirs very much are, but I could tell they were quality oysters under all the "fried". The hh menu just says "oysters", but at least when we were there, they were happy to serve them either raw or fried for the same price.) I also had an $8 Guinness, and a $7 blackberry Irish whiskey highball (both also happy hour price). Nothing I'd go out of my way for, but if I were here for the food, I'd also be happy about those prices, again, if I were there for a relatively early, i.e. before 6 PM, dinner on a weekday, but that is also likely why I would be there. (Well, either that or for an event - I have also been to one of their $25, once a month or so, whiskey tasting events, which are occasionally very much worth it if you like trying fancy Irish whiskeys, or at least that one was. Also tried their half-cider, half-Guinness "Black Satin" beer cocktail while at that event, to pair with said whiskey - turns out that's a weirdly great combo - and a Scotch egg, which wasn't happy hour priced at the time, but I believe is also on their happy hour. It was right after opening, but there were a couple of parties already seated indoors and outdoors. It was self-seating, and a server came to take my order after a few minutes. The decor felt like a traditional pub, with Irish tunes going in the background. The place at first glance looks like it has been there for a while. I'm sure it would be much more lively in the evenings or weekends. I ordered a full Irish breakfast and a Guinness - both were excellent, if a quaint combination. Service was attentive and helpful throughout my time. I would return next time with some friends for an evening out and try some additional pub fare. read more
