I hate celery. HATE. And their vegetable Lo Mein is fuckin' full of celery. I guess though, most normal people don't have such a strong aversion to celery and would be fine with the Lo Mein. And honestly, I ate around the celery and everything was totally fine. The egg rolls were delicious, the Tsing Tao was cold and the service was so, so friendly. My boyfriend enjoyed his crispy beef but not so much the steamed white rice - we both thought it tasted like Uncle Ben's. Eaten here about 6 times over the last few years. It's not close to home so we're infrequent patrons but have found it clean and delicious albeit a bit spendy. Tonight we arrived about 7pm, the place was quiet and about half full. We were seated then ignored. We flagged down our waitress who took our order then unapologetically informed us it would be at least 30 mins until the food would arrive. I thought I had mis heard her! I asked why and she said "very busy". It wasn't visibly busy and I was flummoxed. She offered nothing else and left. We debated briefly and chose to leave. I told the owner on our way out what had happened, and she just sort of agreed that yes, they were busy. Very very odd. With a little encouragement or a free glass of wine we would have stayed, but they didn't seem to care one bit. read more

So I took carry out since I was in the neighborhood walking my kids (ie. my 2 dogs) at the big dog park, Magnuson, 3 miles down the street. I called ahead and they told me 15 minutes, when in actual it was 20 minutes. I'm okay with that, I'm not going to complain about 5 minutes; however, before charging me the lady cashier told me my dish did not come with rice. I had ordered General Tso and Seafood Chow Mein. Typically, when ordering a noodle dish, that does not include rice; however, I found it pretty frugal that they charge for rice. Had my wife and I ate at the restaurant, they would have included it. But I'm charged for rice on a take-out order? The cost of a bowl of rice is very immaterial, I'm just stating principle. The food was okay, definitely nothing special. I mainly went to this restaurant due to convenience and the many reviews. Being an American with Chinese descent and given the fact that I eat asian food as much as I do, I would advise anyone in the Seattle area to just eat Chinese food in the International District. The food is a lot BETTER and it's CHEAPER both in general and proportionally. China Village is better then nothing if you're looking for a Chinese food fix. read more

I met a friend here who has lived in the area for a long time. The food was edible and cheap, but that is about all I can say for it. My meal was marked "spicy" on the menu but was not spicy at all. I took home an order of "almond chicken" to my husband, which was actually some fried chicken cutlet with gravy on it, kind of like the old German cafeteria ladies in Iowa used to serve us. I must say that I love China Village. I used to get take out from here all the time. They are always so nice. I hadn't been back in at least a year. I walked in the owner Amy knew my first name and asked how I had been. It is like a big family here. A few in our party well actually one was running late and like any good restaurant should they offered to bring appetizers while we were waiting. mmmm barbecue pork and potstickers. My favorite dishes from here are the China Village Special prawns they are lightly breaded with a sweet sauce & the green beans in oyster sauce. I also love their scallops in a basket which have another name but we called them that because well they are scallops in a basket. There is always so much food portion sizes are very generous which is great for left overs. The location is great right at 5 corners by Baskin & Robbins near the University Village. Suffice to say, I was REALLY hungry that evening when it was suggested that we did Chinese take out. Now you all know that when I do Chinese take out here, it's fish head tofu, salted fish fried rice and the likes... this evening however, I was entertained with curry beef, chicken lettuce wraps, bak choy (no complains about this order lol), TWO orders of beef and brocolli ('coz it's the godson's favorite dish) and lots others non-Chinese Chinese dishes... hmmm... It's been awhile since I had American Chinese food - or if I had any, I try to forget the experience. But I don't know if it was REALLY good, if I was so hungry any thing would have been awesome or the great company at dinner... but I enjoyed everything we had! Yes, oddly enough, even the curry-powder filled, curry beef lol! Owned by a Mandarin speaking family, this restaurant seems to do better take-out business then eat-in ones. Of course, it was almost 9pm by the time we walked in, so that should be taken into consideration. Our friends' have been coming here for eons - even before their kids' were born so that's at least 18 years and they say the lady at the cashier was already there back then. ...service was good and very friendly (to the locals) and it seems like most people who come here, like our friends, have been coming here for ages. The owner lady seemed to know everyone by first name - though she didn't know our friend's lol! Pretty impressive especially for a Chinese restaurant :) I spoke to her in Mandarin and while she didn't seem overly eager to, she responded and I took the hint. My friends and I called an order to go. We ordered sweet and sour chicken, BBQ beef, chicken friend rice, egg rolls and wonton soup. Keep in mind that we're feeding 5 people off of this. Total comes to $42-seems high but it's good food right? We go pick up the order, take it home, open it up, and it's a dinner for 2. 2 of everything and a tiny box of rice not even worth $5. Then we open the sweet and sour and it's chicken katsu. We assume we had our order mixed up so we called and they said that's the way their sweet and sour is. That is such BS! And to get more food would cost another $32. Talk about biggest rip off ever. There wasn't much else we could do, so we just ate what we had which were scraps. Disappointing. Our first visit to Uncle Lee's was disappointing. Egg shells in the bland fried rice was very unappetizing. The orange chicken was so-so. Kids like the potstickers and egg rolls. Seems pretty pricey for what you get. Maybe we will give it a try another time, but it'll be a while. Bummer. read more

I've had a hit-and-miss experience with China Village. The owner is super nice and the place seems really clean and classy (for a U-District Asian spot), so I want to give them a great review, but it's just not as fantastic as Yummy Cafe. The Kung Pao chicken has kind of an odd taste to it-- not that something was wrong with the chicken, but the sauce was not what I was expecting. The steamed rice is good but the fried rice isn't as crispy as I like. However, the Mongolian beef is very tasty and the steak is cooked perfectly. If I ever go back, it's definitely what I'll order. Verdict? pretty good, free parking, and cheaper than anything at U Village down the street, but not the best pick for Chinese. read more

I was divided between giving this place 2 stars and 3 because I've been here 3 times and I wasn't sold on whether they avoid using MSG in their food. First 2 times I ordered one of their lunch specials (I think it was the Mongolian beef & broc), I swelled up like a helium balloon and felt tingly sensations in my fingertips. Yikes! After googling these symptoms, I could only conclude I fell victim to MSG overload. A friend raved about this place and asked if we should have lunch here and though I didn't go into detail on my previous experiences, I told her I hesitated to go again because of unpleasant side effects. She convinced me by offering to pay and since we were crunched on time, I ventured for a third time to China Village. I ordered their lunch special *again* and this time I skipped the egg roll, had 2 sips of their hot and sour soup, and ordered sauteed chicken and veggies. I was disappointed that they didn't serve brown rice, but what can I expect from a place that probably uses MSG in every dish? Chicken was tender and sauce was okay w/the veggies. She had the almond (or was it cashew?) chicken and she devoured everything. Good thing was this time no tingling sensation and no bloat. Either they stopped with the MSG or my body has built its own immunity to this nasty preservative. Here's to believing third time is the charm! read more

Ok food, ok price. The place was deadly silent at 8:30 on a Tuesday. Almost uncomfortably so. I could hear the only other people across the restaurant talking about sausages. Pretty typical Chinese-American fare. I did really enjoy the hot and sour soup. Kung Pao chicken could have been a little spicier and it had a lot of extras in it like little baby corns and broccoli (eh?). I also like it when they provide the little jars of burnt chili oil on the table. Which they didn't here, unfortunately. Since I live nearby I may stop in for quick takeout. Price is a little high for some items, but for dinner you can find things around $10. I suspect lunch is a much better deal. read more

I have passed this place many time and for some reason it always appear to be a Monday. I do make it to this neighborhood on the weekends as well, but tend not to remember that "The Village" is here. The interior looks much like a home. The colors, layout, fixture and molding make me think that this place was once residential converted to commercial. Service was okay, not bad, but not good. I thought it could have been faster, but the food was worth the wait. Some of the best Chinese I have had in some time. The hot and sour was more sour than hot, but with a kiss of say it was delicious. The potstickers were about half the size of most places, but the flavor packed a serious punch. The Mongolian beef was tender, juicy and flaver-full! Short of them being stingy on the rice, I was pretty damn impressed. For a place so close to a college campus I thought it was spendy, but it's also close to a high end neighborhood. I'd love to have this place on my block, but I'd also go broke. I look forward to go back, but for lunch, dinner is a bank breaker. read more

Wow. What to say about this place? I liked it but hated it at the same time. Let me explain. First of all, any restaurant that is empty on a Friday night is doing something wrong. There were a lot of to go orders so maybe that is the bulk of their business. This was our experience. Walked in and were greeted warmly and seated at a comfortable booth near the window. When waiter was filling my water he and I both noticed at the same time that there was a lipstick stain on mine. Not a big deal I know but I like to report things just like they happened. We decided to order a bowl of hot and sour soup to start because I absolutely love it. It was delicious. Probably the best I've had in the city. Very sour and spicy as it should be. For entrees I ordered the chongqing spicy chicken and my friend ordered General tsos because apparently this is what they're known for. I didn't care for my entree. It was very sour and was way to salty. It consisted of little pieces of chicken cooked with red chilis and Chinese long beans. The general tsos was pretty tasty but was also too salty. Very salty. This one consisted of huge pieces of chicken smothered in a General tsos sauce like I've never tasted before. Instead of being cloyingly sweet it was more sour like my entree. Prices here are pretty steep. 15.95 for each of our dishes. Mine tasted like it had been under a heat lamp for a while while my friends entree was piping hot and fresh. We had three different people waiting on us and everyone was very friendly and attentive. I really wanted this place to be good but the only thing I'd come back for is the hot and sour soup. It was divine. Three stars are for the friendly service and the delicious soup. read more

These people love me!!!! So I will go there at least once a month if not more. It's a clean place. It's not that far from the UW campus where I'm at during the day. The service is most excellent and the owner/manager and the waiter always remember me and ask where I've been. Today I had the SWEET & SOUR CHICKEN. Yum...and I'm good for the afternoon. The price is right along with the good service. (Lunches are usually about $6.00 nice for my budget.) They have their own parkng lot. I've never had trouble driving up and getting Doris Day parking (meaning that, like in the old movies, I can drive up to the front door and walk right in). read more

I've been eating at Uncle Lee's since my son was an infant. I'm very picky about my Chinese food, and had despaired about finding a place where I could eat. Then, I found Uncle Lee's. They have incredible dishes, and amazing spices, both for the typical American palate, and for those who are looking for an authentic taste. Try the hot sauce Lee makes in-house. It's perfectly balanced. Ask him about the spice that makes your tongue numb. No one else has it. The calamari is perfect, every time. Plus, they make my son's fried rice EXACTLY the way he likes it, every time. There's never a question about where we're going to eat when we go out. Not to mention, we've been going so often it feels like our "home" restaurant now. My son doesn't even need to order, and we are welcomed so warmly every visit... they are our family in this city we now call home. You will probably see my son and I eating there tonight. read more

I love this place! It's perhaps my favorite restaurant in the U District area. The inside is clean and friendly. The staff is always incredibly nice and helping discover new dishes and the history of the cuisine. I think the hot and sour soup is a delight and I love the crispy chicken. We came here while my son was admitted at Children's Hospital. Three of us came in, wearing our hospital visitors badges, planning to pick up a nice hot meal to take back to eat in the hospital room, before visiting hours were over. After placing our order, we waited for 50 minutes to eventually get our order. I had to check in twice, each time they seemed surprised that I might be concerned about the order. Meanwhile, a family of four, who came in after us, were happily eating their order. Then, after shelling out $50, and driving back to the hospital to eat it, we discovered that the food was not what we would describe as good. None of us finished any of the dishes, deciding that going hungry was a netter option. In retrospect, the hospital cafeteria, that seemed so lame, was actually a better choice. What a pleasant surprise to find this nice updated place. The Health Dept. Smiley Face rating greeted me and assured me that the food handling was up to pare. I was excited to try the Singapore Noodles and Green beans on the menu. Finding Singapore Street Noodles in a clean restaurant can be a challenge. The noodles were good, a little heavy on the curry and lacked a few greens. I had the fried tofu added as a protien as shrimp was not offered as an option. They hit the spot. Nice texture. First of all, lets dispel with some myths. People who pan this restaurant, because they are "from New York", or they've "been to China" and supposedly "know" real Chinese food have zero merit when it comes to reviewing Asian restaurants, especially on a site where anybody can claim anything. Like with any Asian food, Chinese food can be hard to peg as "authentic." Whether it is Sichuan, Cantonese, Jiangsu or whatever because Chinese food varies, sometimes dramatically, even inside those regions of origin. It is pretentious to assume that your review is solid because you "know" Chinese food. So you are from New York or You've been thru Asia? One review from a "Bill P" even slammed the mushu pork because it was "mostly vermicelli!" So that was either written with a personal agenda or about another restaurant as there's nothing close to vermicelli in their, or anyone's Mushu pork. So what, you know where the owners of this restaurant are from? China. So everything is relative. As far as this restaurant and this neighborhood, the place is damned good, even with the recent addition of Thai staples to the Menu, Phad Thai, Phad Kee Mao, and Curries. The Phad Thai is delicious. I base that simply on comparisons with other Phad Thai I've had in this city. The Ten ingredient Lo Mein is fantastic. No, they don't make their noodles but the ones delivered are deliciously smoky. I have said before about their Lo Mein, it is as good as it gets outside International district. The only comparison are the garlic Noodles at Chef Liao's in Greenwood. Other stand outs are their Salt & Pepper Prawns, Wonton soup, Cumin Beef, Hunan black bean Pork, Squid with Basil, Chang-Sa Chicken, and their Wontons in Spicy Sauce are exceptional, not the frozen variety of Wonton that you see far too often in Chinese-American restaurants in this city, but fresh and delicious! I even went once with a friend who didn't like spicy and without a second thought the owner had the kitchen make up a sauce without spicy and they were even better than the original! So, complain away all you want about a lack of a pea vine dish or lack of fried pig intestine, and jelly fish but the place caters to the neighborhood and the neighborhood is very uptight. I like being adventurous but remember food costs kill restaurants and if upper class white people don't know it, can't pronounce it, or haven't had it, then it would be a losing cause to educate people at the expense of the restaurant. I would love to see them do dim sum during the day, they have the space, but they don't have near enough foot traffic in the area and the clientele is way to uneducated and high-brow for it. Now that Judy Fu no longer has a presence at Snappy Dragon it's horrible now. Chiang's is good and unique because of the three menu's but their Chinese-American menu is pretty blah, Uncle Lee's is the best place in the area! Oof. No, I'm afraid not. Last time we went here it was operating under its previous name (China Village). The name and sign are new, and it's markedly less grubby inside than before--the tables are no longer sticky--but the food has not improved. The people are friendly, but the food is...well, it's edible, but that's about all. There were unappetizing off-smells and flavors in the BBQ pork and the mu shu and the spring rolls. Not spoiled-food odors, just a this-doesn't-smell-right effect, and it carried through in an offputting taste. The lemon chicken and the string beans were OK, but not better than that. The mu shu pork filling was unpleasantly runny and the hoisin sauce that came with it couldn't fix the flavor. This place dates back to a time when Americans' understanding of "Chinese food" was more or less a caricature, and while it's certainly possible to get good quality Chinese-American food (cashew chicken, sweet and sour, General Tso's, mu shu, etc), it can't be had at Uncle Lee's. Moreover, given the prices, it's really not cost-effective. We'll stick to Chiang's (Chinese) and Snappy Dragon (Chinese to Chinese-American) for considerably better food and value. read more
