Stopped in on a whim and ordered the seared scallops sandwich. While a little pricey at almost $20 for a sandwich (and not a particularly large one at that), it was delicious. The staff has really fun/positive vibes and made me laugh, haha. There's also a whole seated dining area with heaters hanging from the ceiling. Will be back for more!
Found ourselves in a part of Seattle new to us and we were looking for a quick bite for lunch. What a treat! We were greeted by a friendly gentleman who- as it turned out was from Jersey and had gone to college in Philly! Of course we talked about the Eagles for a bit. They have casual outdoor seating with a heated covered patio. But about the food... it was really, really good. We were tempted to order sandwiches, but decided on platters instead. All the reviews we read raved about the pork so we ordered rice & beans trio and the pork on lettuce with pickled cabbage. Pork was perfectly tender, seasoned to perfection, the pickled cabbage was unique and very tasty. We drizzled their homemade hot sauce on everything - giving it a nice punch of heat. Highly recommend - can't wait to return and grab sandwiches!
Visited this spot with very high expectations, which may be why I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. It's a walk-up and order type of spot, with long picnic table-esque seating on one side. The staff was very friendly, and street parking was easy to find on a weekend afternoon. We got the Caribbean Roast sandwich, which is their signature, and the sauteed prawn sandwich, which was recommended to us by the staff. Surprisingly, we enjoyed the latter more - prawns had great texture and were super fresh. The tapenade was a good touch too and overall this was a solid, well-made sandwich. The Caribbean Roast was just a bit over the top for me - I'm no stranger to flavor, but there was just so much going on in an unbalanced way. The aioli overpowered everything else in the sandwich, and the sauce and juice made the lettuce mushy super quickly. The onions were cut into really big pieces that were hard to bite through, which meant every time I got to an onion piece in the sandwich, the whole thing just got pulled out of the sandwich in that bite. The meat was certainly cooked very tenderly and had great juiciness, and I appreciated the hefty portions! Not sure if I'd personally go out of my way again to come back, but the freshness and quality were there, especially at this price point. Would recommend for people who love big, juicy, messy, strong-flavored sandwiches!
I came on a Friday night around 5:30pm and there were open seats (though the restaurant is very small and doesn't have a lot of seating). Our sandwiches were also made pretty fast (5-10 min). We got the caribbean press and it was good. I really like the acidity from the pickled peppers. The sandwich has a pretty strong dijon mustard taste to me though, so if you don't like that, then I wouldn't recommend this sandwich. Usually the meat is pretty tender, but when eating it I find that the juices from the meat drip out of the sandwich, so the last few bites are a little dry.
Went here for the first time today, and was glad I did. I had the Caribbean Roast Pork sandwich and it was very good. Lots of meat, great bun, great spreads, and I got it with jalapeños which I would recommend. It was a very juicy sandwich. Expect things to be messy and your hands to smell like pork afterwards. Not sure if I would say this the best sandwich in Seattle, but I can't remember having a better one elsewhere at least in the last few years. The staff were great. The cooks and guy at the cash register were having fun while still working to provide orders quickly. The eating area was heated, but still a little chilly on the cold rainy day I was there. I will be back to try some other sandwich's. Note the prices on the Yelp menu look outdated. I think the prices are about $3 per sandwich higher now.
Best sandwiches in town. Everything is super savory and juicy. The blend of meat, sauce, and peppers is The bread is also really good; it's crispy on thr outside but soaks up a lot of the juices on the inside. My favorite might be the Caribbean Roast and then the Palomilla Steak in a very close 2nd place. Highly recommend. Plenty of seats outside to eat, as well. Parking is a little tough, but besides that this is the perfect spot.
If I am judging this establishment purely based on food alone, then it would be closer to a 4, but the economical aspect of this place together with how it has quality food in general makes it worth a 5 star rating. I think that experiences may vary based on what category customers choose their dishes from, so sandwiches are always safe to choose. I had the signature Caribbean Roast sandwich and it tasted really good! The garlic mayo aioli provided a layer of flavor that the sandwich itself wasn't able to give. It also made the sandwich richer, as oil kept dripping onto the wrapper. My only constructive criticism is that if the onion was caramelized more, it would enhance the sandwich. Still, though, it was already really good. The pork shoulder was very tender because of the marinade. I enjoyed it very much and can definitely see why many call this Seattle's best sandwich. One of my friends had the carne and rice dish, choosing chicken as the meat, and it tasted pretty good per her. It was only $9 which made my friend skeptical, but the amount was so abundant and it tasted good, so to her, it was worth it. Another friend ordered the Caribbean roast dinner plate, which had black beans on the side. She said it wasn't as good as the sandwich, but had mostly positive comments about it. When I searched on Reddit for food options in Seattle, this establishment appeared the most, and now I understand why. The only thing I wished I was able to do was having a bigger stomach so I could taste more sandwiches. The one I had was gigantic, so once again, economically it was very worth it.
Called in an order for takeout on a rainy afternoon. Gentleman who answered had a very outgoing personality and was the same when we pulled up to pay in person. He remembered our name for pickup and had our order ready to go. We ordered: - Sautéed Prawn sandwich - Caribbean Roast sandwich - Palomilla Steak sandwich - Carne & Rice - side of carmelized onions My prawn sandwich was delicious! Bread held up to the ingredients. It contained a light tartar sauce that tasted like they make it themselves in-house, spinach, and carmelized onions. This is the second spot I've tried in SEA that had chunky cut onions that made eating the sandwich a bit difficult. Wish they were cut more like a julienne, but that's my personal opinion. There is only street parking, so depending on time of day parking may be difficult. There is a window where you order and can see the hard working cooks in the open kitchen. On the side is an open seating area for dining. I would definitely recommend and would love to come back on my next visit to try other food items!
Food - will prob be my go-to sandwich spot. huge portions. great flavor. will make a huge mess so be prepared. i had the caribbean roast and everything together is really just one of the best sandwiches i've ever had. nice crispy bread. seasoning on the meat was great. def not dry. Service - very friendly. Ambiance - very hole-in-the-wall feel. a few tables outside. nothing fancy. music blasting making you feel islandy vibes in the PNW.
This Ballard staple is always a hit! It's a fast, casual and comfortable outdoor eatery with a mirror along the wall and a bathroom around the corner. The cashier was extremely genuine and nice. My friend and I shared the Caribbean roast (spicy with delicious aioli) and the Press (we loved the sauce and texture of the pork!). These big sandwiches are messy, savory and absolutely droolworthy. We liked them better than Paseo's, though theirs are also 5/5 stars. Our only complaint was that the crusty bread was so thick that we couldn't fit everything into one bite. I'd love to come back over and over again.
Un Bien has been on my bucket list forever and is renown for being one of the best sandwiches in Washington (if not the #1 best sandwich in Washington, at least according to their sign outside)! I came on a Thursday at 7pm, and there was no line when I arrived. They don't have a lot, but I had no issue getting street parking. I ordered their famous CARIBBEAN ROAST sandwich ($14.25 plus tax and tip) which is "pork shoulder coated in bien marinade & slow roasted til falling into succulent morsels on a toasted Giuseppe baguette by Macrina Bakery, slathered with aioli, fresh cilantro, pickled spicy jalapeños, crisp romaine lettuce and our caramelized onions." The pork was very tender, juicy, and well marinated in their famous sauce. They also load this thing up with grilled onions which kind of overwhelmed the sandwich. I literally used Listerine four times after eating this sandwich, but the onion taste and smell still lingered (apologies to my partner lol). The baguette and lettuce were both nice and crisp like the description and offered a nice contrast to the softer meat and grilled vegetables. Make sure to stock up on napkins, because this sandwich oozes with meat juice and aioli with every bite! Un Bien has a small covered outdoor eating area with bench tables, but they do a lot of to-go orders too. Service was great and I got my food within 10 minutes after ordering. In sum, the sandwich was decent, but for $14.25 (plus tax and tip which comes out to over $16) it is definitely on the more expensive side for what you get. Then again, their competitor, Paseo is fairly comparable in price, if not slightly more expensive. Overall : 4/5 for food, 4/5 for service, 4/5 for atmosphere

I LOVEE this place. I genuinely think that this is one of the few spots / types of foods that is truly special and unique to Seattle. From my visit last summer, I had only tried Paseo but was told that Un Bien was the better version of the same food. I never made it out here last year, but finally got the chance to this time. They don't have indoor seating, so you order at the counter and then eat at the outdoor tables next to the counter and they call your name when its ready. My friend and I got the seared scallop and carribean roast sandwich, and shared both so we got to try half of each. Between the two I was expecting to like the seared scallop more due to it's uniqueness, but ended up actually enjoying the classic carribean roast more. The scallop sandwich was delicious don't get me wrong, but the scallops weren't as thick as the ones I saw in pictures and they also kept falling out which made it a little difficult to eat. On the other hand, everything about the carribean roast sandwich was perfect - the tender and so flavorful pork shoulder, thick caramelized onions, and most delicious spread all on a nicely toasted baguette. This is seriously one of, if not the best sandwich I have ever had. I would come back here so so often if I had the means to do so, but public transportation from where I am makes it a little difficult. Maybe that's a good thing for both my health and wallet :"). Stopped by at 8pm only to find #1 was all gone. We returned the next morning to order and hand carry these sandwiches all the way back home. TSA held up my bag due to the sandwich. Guess it looks densely sus I'm the screen. They questioned me and I explained it was the best pork sandwich and they couldn't have it! All good. The sandwich made it home and it's as good as when I had it 5 years ago. Tender pork, great roll and onion and peppers =perfection!! Tried your competitors sando-- no. Ok. Hands down. Un Bien is better than El Paseo. I said it. Yes, the sandwiches are almost identical, but Un Bien has better flavor and quality. Nothing against El Paseo, but when you've had Un Bien, nothing else compares. There was already a line before opening, but service was friendly and fast. No indoor dining, but they have a covered patio area with picnic tables. Or take it to go and enjoy it at a park! My only, teeny, tiny gripe is that they use a bit too much mayo (aioli, excuse me) on the sandwiches. It makes everything a bit too soggy and messy. But nonetheless, that does not deter me. If you're in Seattle and haven't been to Un Bien, that's no bien, and you better get yoself over here!! read more

I've been meaning to try this place everytime I come to Seattle and have not had a chance to do it until this trip!! The store is located on the side of the street. You order first at the window before finding a seat. Not too sure if there's an indoor seating area, but we sat at their outdoor covered seating area. Parking is street parking, which wasn't too difficult for us to find on a Sunday afternoon. I got the Caribbean Roast Sandwich ($13.25) and I thought it was delicious! Despite there being very large chunks of onion, I managed to eat it all because all the flavors and ingredients went together quite well. Good recommendation! read more
Caribbean Roast Sandwich: An amazing combination of flavor and textures. If you're in the area, I'd highly recommend you come try this. This is one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. Paseo's previous owners reopened into Un Bien, which makes them the real OG of the Caribbean Roast even if they opened in 2015. There was a small line when we arrived, but it went by quickly. From the side, you can see the kitchen cooking up the food. We ordered the infamous Caribbean Roast ($13.25) and some Elotes ($6). Fair warning, the sandwich is super messy and falls apart, so keep it in the wrapper when eating. Either way, they give you plenty of napkins. From first look, the sandwich didn't look that great but the flavor is all there. I actually tried both the sandwich from Paseo and Un Bien; and we all agreed we liked Un Bien better as there's more flavor on the slow-roasted pork. Plus, the elote was delicious and slathered with all the mayo, paprika, cilantro, parmesan, and seasonings atop of the smokey grilled flavor of the corn. read more
OMG! The BREAD! The sandwiches are SO good! They are well made, plenty of ingredients- no stingy chef! One bathroom, and a water fountain for self service. Your hands will get messy so maybe bring "wet hand napkins"....community table kind of seating. Parking available at surrounding streets. give them a try! read more
I finally got to try this place after my friends were raving about it. It's a casual establishment with patio benches outdoor seating style. When we got there there were no seats but since people aren't lingering much after eating, the turnaround time is pretty fast. Line moves quick too! My friend got a burrito and I got their classic Caribbean Roast sandwich. Both were solid, highly recommend sharing with friends because there were so many things on the menu I wanted to try! Pretty size-able portions too (burrito was massive). Everything was great, but just wish there was less bread to filling ratio - the contents were good, but maybe a bit too diluted by the bread for my personal taste. Overall, given the charm of the place and the various dishes I've yet to try, I'd still come back again any day. read more
This place is sooooo good!!! I can't stress enough how good this place is. The peeps there are very friendly and chill. Treat you like a regular like if they known you for a long time. One of my biggest regrets from my last trip to Seattle was that we didn't go to Un Bien sooner. We got in on a Wednesday and flew out on a Tuesday, but didn't go to Un Bien until Sunday, at 7pm. They're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I am VERY confident that had we gone there sooner on the trip, I would have had another 2 meals at Un Bien - at least! It's funny because this was just a maybe on my itinerary, but it turned out to be probably the best thing we ate on our trip. Because we didn't expect to enjoy it as much as we did, we only got one Caribbean Roast sandwich to share (along with a burger and fries from another spot on our to-try list). This was our way of hitting up as many food spots as we could. I think my boyfriend regretted sharing with me after he took his first bite. The marinade of the pork and the aioli they use is what makes the sandwich so so so good. I have to admit Seattle is just okay to me, but I would return just to get this again. You have to try it! We also made it a point to try Paseo, which is fine, but Un Bien is where it's at. You gotta go, you gotta try it, and you gotta get your own sandwich! Don't be like us - don't share. You'll regret sharing and not eating more yourself. read more

Visiting my friend and she suggested getting Un Bien for pick up and heading to watch the sunset from the beach. I'm so glad she suggested this because this was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. They are loaded up, the bread is perfectly chewy with a good crunch, and the marinade on the chicken was amazing! The staff were super friendly when we went to grab our order as well. They appear to get really busy (probably because the food is awesome) so just make sure to order ahead or plan for a wait if you are eating there! Please open one in Maryland so I can go all the time lol read more

My cousin took me here under the premise of it being one of Seattle's best sandwich shops. I was very interested as it's a sandwich shop with Caribbean influence! Living in the Caribbean for two years, I did not notice many sandwiches, rather most meals were served with rice and beans and baked mac and cheese or veggies. We had ordered via phone for carry out. This was a great decision, because we were headed out for our boat rental at 2pm on a Saturday and there was a line! Pickups can actually skip the line and head to the front, which we did not know so waited for a bit. We got the prawn, smokin' thighs (chicken), and palomilla steak sandwiches. The sandwiches were very flavorful, especially due to the sauce they use. It makes for a messy sandwich, but also delicious. Unfortunately, our steak sandwich was not cut in half, which made it messier especially since we were having lunch on the boat on Lake Union. The steak was our favorite sandwich. They had a great cook and it was tasty. The smokin thighs were great though too and very tender. I gave some of the chicken to my 17 month old son and he approved. I found the bread to be a little tough, because at times I felt like I had to rip off the sandwich when taking a bite. Overall, a sandwich place bold in flavors! read more

Great sandwiches at a fantastic price point. It's getting harder to find reasonably priced food so this really delivers. The sandwiches are big but not big enough to leave you feeling bloated. Even the serving of beans is a meal in its own right - and delicious. Seating is all outdoors but covered so be conscious of temperature if you're eating here. Parking can be tough but street parking is available on side streets. Arrive very early or on off hours because lines form! read more

My boyfriend has been raving about this place for the longest time so I finally let him take me here and oh. my. goodness. I see what the hype is all about now. I'm not much of a sandwich person (hence why I never felt the urge to try this), but these sandwiches were absolutely DIVINE. The shop doesn't look like much from the outside, but that's how you know it is about to be the most authentic caribbean food ever. The meat was cooked to perfection, tender and deliciously seasoned. And all the veggies and sauces in this sandwich just complemented it so well. The best part is: this sandwich didn't rip up the roof of my mouth, but it was still perfectly toasted (which how you know the bread was goodddd). Overall this was a 10/10 (or 5/5 haha) and I would definitely recommend it to anyone in town!! read more
Heard really good things about these sandwiches and they live up to the hype. Messy, sloppy, and greasy but so, so good. I ordered the caribbean roast and it was loaded. The meat was really tender and the sauce/marinade tied everything together. I'm not even the biggest meat person, but I devoured this. The food here is delicious! There was a line when we went on a Saturday afternoon and it moved at a decent pace. There is outdoor seating (specifically three long tables) with an overhead covering, and folks ate fast enough that there were open seats for those who just got their orders, despite the many customers. We tried the Caribbean Roast and The Press, both of which I'd give a 5/5! The bread is great (crispy on the edges and soft on the inside), and the garlic mayo is delicious too. Because The Press doesn't have lettuce or jalapeños and has more meat and cheese, it's much richer than the Caribbean Roast. A very filling meal! read more
This is easily one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. When my wife and I visited Seattle we read raving reviews about this place and how it is some people's favorite sandwich so naturally we had to give it a try. The first time we went there had it we ordered the Palomilla steak and while it was really good we weren't sure why people were hyping it the way they were since it seemed like an above average sandwich. We had some leftovers we took with us and ended up having those later in the day. When we had the leftovers that's when the sandwich spoke to us we were looking at each other in disbelief since the sandwich tasted like it was completely different for the better! Suddenly, all those reviews we were reading made sense. The reason why we think the sandwiches didn't taste as good the first time was because the condition we had it in weren't the best. When we had it the first time the weather was really windy and cold, in addition there was rain that was getting all over us when we were eating it which may have taken away from the experience at the time. When we had it in a more pleasant setting we were able to appreciate the flavor a lot more and see why it was so highly regarded. Definitely give this place a try even if you don't end up having it there taking it to go is an awesome option and you won't be disappointed. For me it definitely lived up to the hype as one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! read more

I can understand why people are obsessed because honestly, I am obsessed and I can only eat a fraction of the menu. I'd had Un Bien on my radar for a while but finally had the chance to try it out when my friend recommended grabbing a quick bite before his flight. We swung by on a weekend and there was a healthy line which moved pretty fast. Seating is outdoors but it is sheltered and heated! woohoo~ just mildly cold if it's a rainy wet day outside. I went with the tofu because I'm a nice leafeater and I can say, it was suuuuch a darn good sandwich. Bread was perfect and the sauce on there was just addicting. I'm honestly dreaming of when I'll be able to go back and grab another one. I was initially thinking of saving half the sandwich but it was amazing and I also did not want a soggy mess for later. You can grab a couple and split half/half if you go with a friend and want to try a couple of different sandwiches. Parking is street parking but pretty doable in the surrounding area. Prices are fair for what you receive and service is super friendly. Swing by if you're around and looking for delicious eats! read more

Heard about this place for such a long time and finally got out there to try it and it certainly did not disappoint!! Tried the Caribbean roast and steak sandwiches. The roast was spectacular. Meat succulent and perfectly seasoned. Generous sauce which paired so well with the grilled onion. Absolutely delicious. Cashier let us know the roast is the #2 sandwich in the world! I can see why! The steak was good too but can't say it was my favorite out of the two. Steak was a bit chewy. Residential street parking in the area and there is outdoor seating after you order. Will be returning very soon!! read more
This is one of the BEST sandwiches I've ever had hands down--and I came here with high expectations. I called at 6:30 PM on a Friday for pickup at 7PM & would highly recommended calling ahead. Ordered a smokin thighs sandwich. The baguette was fresh and crispy, aioli was slathered onto the bread, and the chicken was smoked well and juicy. They definitely don't skimp on the caramelized onions either and the pickled jalapeños give the sandwich a small kick. There's some areas for sitting--great for a casual meal. I can speak to a rainy and cold December Saturday at lunch: About fifteen minutes from order to food delivery. But the weather was dreadful. I suspect it is twice as long on a pleasant day.
