This sandwich shop is on the pricier side, but you can taste exactly where your money's going. The ingredients are clearly top quality -- everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully put together. The space itself has a cozy and the staff were so helpful and attentive. Sandwiches run on the large side so we ended up splitting the Turkey Feast - a top item. If you're hungry though, get your own full sandwich! The real surprise? The gluten-free cookie. It was so good you'd never know it was gluten-free -- perfectly soft and flavorful. Overall, a little spendy, but absolutely worth it for the taste.
Expensive but worthwhile. The sandwiches are big and delicious. A great combination of ingredients. Staff are so friendly. It was packed on a Sunday afternoon in August. Refreshing and beautifully crafted drinks. No espresso machine, only cold brew. Cute but small shop.
Layers is a very aesthetically pleasing, trendy looking sandwich shop. We got an order to-go and the sandwiches were very good. We got the Harissa Explains It All vegetarian sandwich and the Captain Rick tuna salad sandwich. I think the vegetarian sandwich could have used a plant protein, but the texture and flavor were great and the focaccia was perfect. The Captain Rick was great! I loved that it had chips on it and the tuna salad was good and not too runny. Were these sandwiches good? Yes. Were they $16 and $18 good? Plus extra for chips? Meh. That's Seattle for you, I guess. If I was really craving it and didn't want to make my own sandwich, I'd order again. It's just hard to justify paying that much for a sandwich.
Layers is one of my favorite places to eat in the whole city. The food is consistently delicious. The ingredients are super fresh and high quality. The combinations are just interesting enough to feel like it's worth the money (i.e. herby sauces and freshly baked bread that you wouldn't necessarily make at home) without being too "experimental" as to tip into questionable territory. The menu choices are thoughtful, seasonal, and inspired. My favorite sandwich is the TBR; fantastic homemade ranch, succulent smoked turkey, hearty bacon, and super fresh greens and tomatoes, all on a perfectly toasted bun. Their griddled banana bread is truly the best I've ever had, as is their sesame cookie. So don't skip dessert! The staff is always friendly and accommodating. Once, our group gave some feedback about veganizing a salad item option, and they took it and implemented it onto the menu the next week! It's maybe a small thing, but I am so impressed by people who love their craft and are open to improvements for the benefit of their customers. The inside space of Layers is brightened by two walls of windows, and the decor is cozy and clean. It's as nice to sit inside as it is to enjoy the shared patio that faces Green Lake across the street. Now that they're open everyday, you should have no problem finding an opportunity to enjoy a fantastic sandwich.
A nice find, a bit far from the heart of the city. I wouldn't come back out for it but it was a fun place. We had the captain rock which was delicious! The aioli on it is delicious, I asked for more it was so good. Also the beauty and the beast, to our surprise the bread was so soft the flavors worked well. The staff is nice, the place is clean. It was a nice treat.
Scrumptious Sandos! Such flavor bombs that pack such a punch! You can tell they use fresh ingredients and have unique combinations. We got the "don't go bacon my heart" and the "Beauty and the beef" sandwiches. It comes with so much meat and the sauces are so flavorful! I don't mind paying premium prices for these sandwiches as they are super delicious, however, I wish they came with a side. Something small like chips on the side would make it a complete meal. We paid $7 more for a scoop of potato salad, which was just okay. Pretty "herby" like how it's described...I prefer it a little more creamy. But nonetheless, these are one of the best sandwiches I've had They've got a cute, airy, laidback vibe! I would definitely come back to try out their other sandwiches.
I have really tried to understand the hype around this place but I simply don't get it. Honestly I think I've built enough of an instinct to know from the menu and photos how much I'll like most places, and I could tell from the menu the people behind this spot just have a totally different palette than mine which is maybe where the dissonance is. I find the sandwiches to be just fine. Very inventive recipes but they taste ok, always rather bland, and very hard/messy to eat. The smashed fingerling potatoes are great tho, no questions there. I can understand the love of the atmosphere created here though. Beautiful interior, lovely outdoor seating too, an inventive mix of foods along with interesting pantry stuff, snacks, and merch sold inside.
Dropped by for an early lunch after walking Greenlake. There's a lot of free parking nearby but can be hard to get if you want to park right in front. There's a lot of indoor seating and a couple of outdoor tables. You order the counter and they bring the food out to you. They also clean and clear the table when you're done. Staff are super friendly. I would recommend checking the restaurant's social media pages before you go because they have some really good limited specials.
How I heard of this place: A friend shared how much she loves visiting Layers after going to the dentist in the same neighborhood, and I kept forgetting about it, until we were at Ben & Jerry's and I spotted it just across the courtyard. Type of cuisine: Novelty sandwiches. Fancy version of the tried and true. A handful of sandwiches are available from which to order, substitutions unwelcome. Sides at additional cost, include salad, soup, smashed potatoes and pickles. A fresh baked dessert or two are available to satisfy your post-meal sweet tooth. Ambiance: Cool and breezy, the same looks like it belongs at the seaside, or on a shore line. I guess Greenlake is just across the street, but the vibes are more beachy. The establishment is large and spacious, with booth seating at the lake-facing windows, and chairs opposite across the tables. A small selection of merchandise is available for purchase. The space is quiet and bright, mostly white, and the staff/owner friendly and warm when asked questions about their menu and selections. What I ordered: For our family of four, we selected two Don't Go Bacon My heart ($15 each) - thick cut bacon, Wilcox Farm cage-free fried egg, American cheese, and "lake sauce" on a potato bun; Captain Rick ($18) - Oregon line-caught tuna salad with pickle, red onion, celery, herbs, potato chips, mixed lettuces, and aioli on griddled Pullman bread; and Notorious P.I.G. ($17) - slow roasted pork belly, pineapple pepper jelly, pickled onions, mixed lettuces, and aioli on a toasted potato bun. We also ordered a side of Spuds ($ 8) - smashed & fried fingerling potatoes green goddess dipping sauce. What I loved: We all loved the green goddess dipping sauce that accompanied the potatoes. The tuna sandwich was thick and full of flavor, as was the pork belly sandwich - spicy and bright. The breakfast sandwich left much to be desired, as it was the most bland of our three sandwiches. Why I loved it: The sandwiches are good, the space is bright and cozy. Cost: High/Overpriced
I want to preface this by saying we got really unlucky in that we came the day before a menu change so they were out of like 1/3 of the menu items, including their only vegan sandwich and salad. This posed some difficulties for me as I have a dairy allergy that I can't always ignore and I'm vegetarian, but the server was really helpful in trying to find me a workaround. The things we did order were delicious (though I was bummed that I didn't get to try something more substantive). We sat outside as we had our dog with us and it was a nice ambiance in the outdoor area. I'd love to come back and try something once the new menu is established.
You can't beat a delicious Captain Rick sandwich with a beautiful sunny view of Green Lake. Whoever decided to put bbq chips on a tuna sandwich was a genius- they add a nice crunch and tangy flavor. Yum!
Delicious piles of high-quality fillings sandwiched between slices of fluffy, tasty bread. What's not to love? The Body was body-ing. Captain Rick was capably captaining. The TBR was chef's kiss. I could have eaten the entire container of house pickles all on my own, but the posse of pickle-loving children accompanying me would have fought me for them. Sigh. Next time: everyone gets their own container.
Today, after running errands we stopped here for a quick light lunch. I'm going to give them three stars because the gluten-free sandwich was fantastic! They treated the bread well and the sandwich was layered up beautifully, love the pickle fennel. Why only three stars you ask? Because the young lady taking our order was clueless about the sandwiches when I asked, got snippy when we took a few minutes to look at the menu and when we ask for it to be cut in half, she told us she just sent out a sharp knife... with a pretty snotty look on her face. So my friend didn't tip as it was a walk up counter and you have to bus your own tables, fetch your own water. Would I at there again? Maybe, pickup and take with me. It's not worth the attitude.
Delicious food! Weekend afternoons can be pretty busy so food might take longer to come out but staff is friendly and working hard! They have indoor and outdoor seating and I'm so glad they had a high chair available to use for my little one! I enjoyed their sandwiches, cookie, and sides! got the Notorious PIG sandwich and the Buttermilk Biscuit while I was here Starting with the sandwich, there were a ton of things to love about this The very first thing I noticed was how all-time crispy the pork belly was. Interestingly, the meat came in two separate pieces, arranges somewhat like an X or a cross in the middle of the sandwich. This certainly wasn't the eating experience of a typical sandwich with a circular meat patty, and I appreciate the creativity here. The meat was insanely crunchy, oily, and quite plentiful. Each bite felt a bit like you were biting into a crunchy churro, but without the sweetness. I did think the outside of the pork did overpower the inside, though, as I didn't taste the meat or the fat inside much, and due to the amount of breading the pieces ended up being a bit chewy The bun was quite good as well - it was pretty soft, fluffy, and served as a really good bookend to all the ingredients inside. I thought the lettuce and onions also were good. I don't know if I'm a fan of the jelly on the sandwich - but again, I do like the creativity. What did shine here was the aioli, however. In a lot of places, you don't really taste the aioli on a burger - but that flavor was ever-present on this sandwich, and it was really fantastic. The absolute best part of the meal, by far, though, was the biscuit I have to start with how huge this is. This is certainly not the size of a typical Southern-style buttermilk biscuit - rather this biscuit makes no apologies in its effort to stand out from the crowd. Absolutely nobody would mistake this for a traditional biscuit - on the contrary, I think on first glance most people would assume this isn't a biscuit at all. It's shaped more like a massive pastry. I hesitate to say that looks are deceiving, because it does look great, but its taste manages to elevate past that. This was SO good. The edges are baked perfectly - they're oily, crispy, crunchy, and perfectly flaky. All four sides provide an amazing base - like the walls of a fortress that surround the soft, tender interior of the biscuit. You can see the different layers from the outside as well. When it comes to the inside, there was so much to get through but every bite was heavenly. So much credit here goes to the honey butter - which when spread onto the biscuit, raises the taste level of the entire thing. I put so much honey butter on mine that I nearly finished the whole thing. When it came to the jam, it was good, but since it didn't combine great with the honey butter I mostly ended up just using the latter This place was expensive - around 16 dollars for the sandwich and 8 for the biscuit - however, I was quite full at the end read more

Really enjoyed stopping by here on a really sunny weekend with my dog! I love that there was plenty of outdoor seating as well as indoor seating. The food was pretty good albeit a bit pricey. I saw reviews that varied about portion size and I'd say it really depends on the bread the sandwich comes on. The TBR came on a potato bun and the mortadella sandwich came on focaccia and the mortadella sandwich was about twice as big! Service was minimal as we got our food to go as we didn't realize they do outdoor dining service. Nice casual spot to hit up before a stroll around Green Lake! read more

WOW, full of flavor and lives up to its name. The sandwiches are delicious. They're quite expensive ($18-$22 for a sandwich) but I don't mind it, they're high-quality and fresh. You're satisfied after each bite. I'll pay more for great food. My partner and I could not stop talking about how tasteful Layer's sandwiches are. We wanted to make another order tbh haha. We're excited to come back whenever we visit Green Lake again! read more
2.2/5 Really wanted to like this place. Heard so many good things since they were a food truck. My partner and I were both left underwhelmed:\ Ambiance - actually really cute. Has a nautical theme. Maybe 10 small tables, open kitchen right behind the counter where you order. Service - only brief interactions when ordering and when your food is dropped off which was fine. You do bus your own tables, so you may need to clean after the last person. Food - we ordered the notorious p.i.g, the cloudy with a chance of meatballs, spuds and a slice of pumpkin bread. All of it was just very "meh" to us. The pumpkin bread was decent, it was nice and warm from the griddle, but after it cooled it wasn't very appetizing. The spuds had good texture, crisp smashed potatoes that were fluffy on the inside. They really needed salt, the green goddess sauce it was served with was too subtle to enjoy. Now for the sandwiches. The meatball was pretty good! The notorious p.i.g i did not enjoy it. Pork belly was too crisp and there are only 2 tiny pieces, which is another thing, the sandwiches are TINY and for damn near $20, just expected more. I was curious why everyone there was splitting a sandwich. I assume it's cause they are pricey. read more

Cute little spot conveniently located next to the walking path around Green Lake. The servers were all very friendly and kept the tables clean. My sandwich and pomegranate lemonade were delicious! Only a little expensive, but I was still very happy with my meal. read more

The interior has nice aesthetics and the location is really nice, being right beside Greenlake. I could see myself eating here more when the weather is nicer. The food is a bit pricey for me but given the prime location I think it makes sense. Sandwiches were around $16-17, and seemed well put together, but didn't blow my mind. read more
Would say it's definitely not worth the hype. I got the crab cake special sandwich ($21) and my friend got the tuna sandwich ($18). Mine was quite dry and not flavorful - I had to ask for more sauce. My friend's sandwich looked lackluster with random chips scattered on it. I'm usually one to share food but didn't feel compelled to do so. The order sign/station with an arrow pointing to it is confusing since there's only one paper menu on a stand a few feet away from the cashier. We assumed there would be a kiosk to order from but you still go up to the cashier. It would be helpful to have more menus out or at least a QR code for people to scan so more than one party can study the menu while in line. After ordering, water is self serve and you have to bus your own dishes. I'm quite disappointed that our meal was $50 (including tax and tip) for two very mediocre sandwiches. read more

Layers is such a gem in Green Lake! We stopped by for lunch and were blown away by how fresh and flavorful everything was. Between our group, we tried three different sandwiches--and each one was seriously next-level. The Captain Rick (tuna sandwich) was fresh and flavorful--hands down one of the best tuna sandwiches I've ever had. The Notorious P.I.G. with pork belly was rich, savory, and had that perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture with a nice crispy edge. And the CB&J (cashew butter and jelly) was such a fun twist on a classic--nutty, slightly sweet, and surprisingly satisfying. Yum. To drink, we had a matcha and a cold brew--both excellent. The matcha was smooth and well balanced, not too sweet, and the cold brew was bold and refreshing. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the service was friendly without being overbearing. You can tell they care about quality and attention to detail. We'll absolutely be back (probably for the fresh pop tart pastry next time)! Cheers to the owner! What a lovely couple! read more

Layers had been on my list for a while and I finally got the chance to try it. We came on a Friday around noon and the place was busy! We stood in line for about 10 minutes, but It gave us time to look through the menu and decide. They have outdoor and indoor tables so you can bring your dog and eat outside. I ordered the Notorious P.I.G. sandwich and my friend ordered the Captain Rick. The pork belly sandwich was delicious! So much flavor on the pork belly and not too fatty! Thankfully they cut the sandwich in half. Honestly, it would have been hard to take a bite if they didn't. We wanted to order the TBR (smoked turkey, bacon marinated tomatoes) but they ran out of it. She opted for the Captain Rick; the tuna sandwich included dill and potato chips! The dill added a lot of flavor to the tuna and the crunch of the chips added extra texture! Yum! read more
I keep hearing about Layers so decided to check it out during a recent visit to Green Lake. Very cute little place that was PACKED TO THE GILLS. But don't lose heart--the crowd seems to fluctuate and we were able to get a table relatively quickly. Staff interactions were brief but everyone was very nice, which is impressive given the high volume they are doing. I got the beet salad (I am a vegetarian on a health journey) and I was really happy with it! Nice and big with lots of components. Salads at places like this are often just an afterthought, but this was really tasty and filling! My boyfriend got the Notorious P.I.G., which for him was just okay (I think he was regretting not getting the Reuben though, to be fair). The prices are high, but that's Seattle, right? All in all, a great option for a quick bite and to break up a long walk around the lake. read more
I come here for the baked goods! Chef Ellary does amazing work. I love her biscuits and everything else she bakes. I did not know how much I loved canelés until I had them here. I've had the biscuit & Jam and breakfast sandwiches, but I find myself showing up for the baked goods. This past Saturday, I saw a post of the Bostok and Kouign-Amann, which are new items, so I naturally rushed to Layers to try them and both did not disappoint. Of course, I always pick up a few canelés to enjoy later. This is a great place to come to have a bite to eat, enjoy a cup of coffee or beverage of choice and relax a bit. You can watch the cooks and baristas prepping stuff behind the counter and it adds to the fun energy of the place. Broc bottom ($16) - BIG vegan roasted broccolini and veggie sandwich dressed in a rich, delicious savory sauce. Served on fluffy foccacia bread. Seriously so good & despite its height, actually quite manageable to eat! Spuds ($8) - so crispy and HOT. Steaming hot with big chunks of delicious crispy salt. The green goddess dressing is an absolute must for side dipping. Cashew moon milk ($5) - a unique and fun in-house hot drink! Cashew milk mixed with turmeric, ginger, & cinnamon. A little gritty but the flavor is a surprising blend of sweet and spicy. I really liked it as an early morning pick-me-up. You are asked to bus your own plates. Great selection of clearly marked vegan & vegetarian options. A little pricey but tbh the vibes and the food are so worth it as a brunch treat with pals. And again, the view is so pretty! My friend and I came here for sandwiches, and ordered two and boy did layers deliver layers of flavor! Two different sandwiches, the pig, and the cure! had totally two different vibes! And each flavor combination as each individual sandwich was impeccable. Love the touches of different type veggies that went really well with each protein! A smidge pricey for a sandwich, but after tasting just how gourmet it was.. definitely need to be coming back and be glad to fork out the $ that pig, was succcccuulennnnt! Also wanted to their biscuittttttttt, but they were all sold out. Just means we will have to make our trek back here again! Can't wait! Ps. It's been over 3 years so figured an update to my review is overdue. Huge fan of Layers from day 1 (as you can tell by all the photos.. haha). At first, I was sad about the Layers Sando truck no longer being at breweries because I always looked forward to their sandwiches alongside some tasty beers and just relaxing at a brewery. But, I am definitely happy to have them in a brick and mortar in Green Lake, where it's possible to have their sandos (and other items) most days of the week, whenever the cravings strike! Order at the counter and then find a seat. Sometimes it can get crowded during peak times (and weekends) so to avoid a wait, try for a week day or earlier (11:00ish) on a weekend. However, the line moves pretty quickly so not an issue either way. Note that you should grab your own water and bus your own table when finished. The space is relatively small, so may not be the best to try to eat here if you have a larger group, but otherwise, you can usually find a spot. Perfect also for a grab and go to picnic at the lake, etc. on those sunny days! Sandwiches and food are as good as ever and there is more selection now than the prior food truck and it's awesome that Ellary is part of the team because her baked items are fantastic! (Biscuit, etc.) Big fan of the owners (so friendly and kind and genuinely want you to enjoy everything you order - and are open to feedback). So, still a 5-start experience! read more

Sad to say the notorious P.I.G is discontinued :( but service, ambience, food and location are all absolutely amazing. I have gotten both pastries and sandwiches such as "don't go bacon my heart" and "notorious P.I.G." All of which were absolutely spectacular. Ringer had such a good attitude and great commentary on what to order. Ambience is beautiful as well and located next to a park making a perfect brunch spot. read more
Went around 12:30pm on a Sunday and there was a line outside the door! We found parking in the garage underneath. Lots of people around the area as the weather is nice and its right across the street from green lake. There is only a few tables inside, but they also offer outside seating. You order up front and they bring out your food, but you have to bus your own table. We luckily got a table inside as a table freed up while we were ordering. By the time we got to the front to order, most of the sandwiches were sold out. My friend and I split the ham sandwich and spuds. We asked for the sandwich to be cut in half! The sandwich was surprising good for something that doesn't have that many ingredients. It was very filling and I also enjoyed the potatoes with the green goddess sauce. We also both got the lemonades. It was apparently guava flavored, but we didn't get that at all and it was quite sour. I would pass on this next time. We also ordered the canele(?) and this was a nice sweet treat! It doesn't look amazing, but it tasted really good! It had a slight caramel taste. I would love to come again and try one of their other sandwiches! This was a great experience and highly recommend if you're in the area!! read more

We went here for the first time this weekend and LOVED everything we ordered. We got: the body by fra'mani, notorious PIG, tiny turkey, little piggy, and the sesame toffee cookie. My incredibly picky little ones devoured their sandwiches, and one even had a good portion of MY sandwich (body by fra'mani). The cookie was so so excellent...I will have to see if I can recreate it at home. But if not, the owner shared that they're a staple cookie... so we might just have to come out often for our fix. Everyone was so kind, and the inside is so cute! I love a good sandwich shop with ambiance. read more
