Zax Eat N Three is a must-try business to support near Green Lake on 99. Run by a delightful family, Zax has a small but mighty menu of southern bbq that manages to be both reassuringly familiar and excitingly unique. They offer three proteins (smoked chicken, smoked meatloaf, and pulled pork). My spouse and I both ordered meatloaf in different formats--a sandwich melt with one side for him, a plate with two sides for me. The sides we tried were all fantastic: the corn fritters were crunchy and balanced, the miso honey green beans were full of flavor and not at all too sweet as I'd feared, and the potato salad was fluffy and herby. As far as I'm concerned, these are the best sides offerings of any bbq in the greater Seattle area. I even wonder if the owners might consider offering an all-sides plate! I regret to report that we both found the meatloaf quite dry and a little tough/dense. The slices are grilled so it's possible they stayed on too long, although the inside was still pink. The flavor was great, and the bbq sauce on top was delicious. It was just the texture that put us off. It does look like other reviewers loved the meatloaf; maybe we came on a bad day. But because the flavors of everything were so good, we will be back--next time to try the chicken. We ordered takeout, and the food was ready very quickly. The owner was very sweet and welcoming. Zax is easily the best new restaurant that I've tried in Seattle so far in 2026. If you want to absolutely stuff your face with fantastic Southern food, there is actually no better place in the area. I've said it before and I'll say it again, some of Seattle's BEST restaurants are on Aurora Ave, and this is no exception. Zax fills a massive void for both BBQ and Southern food in Seattle. If you're not familiar with the concept, you pick a meat (there are only 3 to pick from, they keep it simple), and then you pick two or three sides. This is definitely more of a takeout type of establishment, but the service that was provided was top notch. She warned me when I ordered that their potato salad is not traditional, and is olive oil based, she also recommended getting it grilled. I've never had it this way before, but it was fantastic. This level of communication, and anticipating a problem before it arises, is key to a successful business. I'm pretty sure she was the owner, but that is a trait that makes for a valuable teammate anywhere! The meat and 3 is an insurmountable amount of food for one person, and it's only $20. This may currently be one of the best deals in town when you account for quality of your meal. If you eat the entire thing yourself, you deserve a medal. I elected for the chicken because it looked very unique in terms of the rub. I just assumed that it would be dry, but I was blown away on all fronts. Not only did this chicken have a tremendous smoky flavor, but it was so juicy that it didn't need the sauce at all. I believe that the bbq sauce is Carolina-style, which isn't my favorite personally, so it would have been awesome to be able to switch that out. But if you're into that kind of twang in your sauce, you'll love it. Can't wait to go back and try the other meats! read more

The menu at this place was very intriguing! Barbecue with a twist. My MIL and I tried this place, and sadly we did not love it. The service was great, but the inside of the restaurant was cold and smelled a bit musty. The food itself was decent, but the only stand out thing for me was the cornbread fritters. YES YES YES!! So happy that we finally popped in. Each of us ordered the Meat n Two. I had the smoked chicken with a side of miso green beans and hot honey corn fritters. The juicy chicken and the perfectly seasoned green beans really stood out. It was a whole side of chicken (thigh, drumstick and wing) so there was a lot of food. I also had an Arnold Palmer which was a perfect accompaniment. Overall, everything was so tasty and balanced and well priced (especially for Seattle)! The owner was so kind and helpful. He was managing everything alone and doing a great job balancing the in person and takeout orders. The restaurant felt really homey although it filled up quite quickly. Disclaimer: discovered this place through our school network That family that runs this place is super kind as all the reviews say, but the food was my god on point. We tried the chicken and it was fall off the bone. The white sauce is unique and the best thing is almost everything on the menu is gluten free friendly. The sides are very inspired with the corn fritters being our favorite! The rosemary white beans were subtle in flavor and very comforting. We even tried the chicken melt and the sandwich was delicious. My only recommendation is to add some fries and I can see the sandwich and fries being a staple for the white collar workers in the area. Easy parking available behind the store. read more

I first really first loved the hospitality here. Mrs. Zach greeted me at the door, with a newborn swaddled to her chest. In my early days of motherhood, I was incredibly tired. I could barely take a shower. My admiration to her, for even being to work and take care of her family at the same time. Clearly, they juggle family and work successfully. I would have been much more sleep deprived and cranky. She shined hospitality. I got the smoked chicken, potato salad, corn fritters and rosemary beans. Plus, sweet tea. I have a weakness for Southern food, having a good friend from Alabama. A short wait, as they were getting the chicken fresh from the smoker. Love fresh bbq, so was pleased to hear this. The chicken was nicely smoked, with the smoked flavor throughout the chicken. They managed to have crispy skin and tender meat at the same time. A rarity and shows their cooking skills. Really great Alabama sauce added to the chicken. A very generous portion of chicken. Mrs. Zach suggested my order of potato salad be grilled. Not really sure of this. But, it was an excellent suggestion. The Herb vinaigrette was elevated by grilling and gave the potatoes a nice crunch. The rosemary beans had a delicate taste of rosemary and were tender and soupy. The corn fritters were good. The fresh corn added, gave texture to the fritters. I prefer more straight cornmeal fritters. Would have liked more cornmeal and less corn kernels. And green onion added to the fritters. Or, more spice. Still liked the fritters, just a little bland. Delicious food! We got two meat and threes with the meatloaf and smoked chicken, cornbread fritters, green beans, rosemary white beans, slaw, and potato salad (griddled, highly recommend). Everything was great. My favorite of the sides was the green beans, cornbread fritters in a close second. White beans were very rosemary forward, which we loved. Can't praise this spot enough. Family spot, amazing prices, incredibly friendly people. The food was immaculate, half chicken and two sides for 18$? Incredible grill flavor on the chicken, juicy breast meat on a half bird while everything is cooked through is a feat. Great white BBQ sauce. Meat loaf is a sleeper, was my girlfriend's favorite thing. Not your grandmothers meatloaf, meaty and well seasoned. Sides were all equally delicious, we got the green beans, carrots, corn cakes, and grilled potato salad. Not a miss and it's hard to pick a favorite. This tiny shop is my happiest food find in quite a while. We stopped by on a recent Saturday and both picked up the special - a club sandwich constructed around bologna the owner had smoked himself. Friend, if you read 'bologna' and thought 'not for me' at that point, let me tell you that fiend Oscar Meyer ain't serving anything at all like the deliciousness that was on offer that day at Zax. This was a three-slice stack of tangy spread, the tiniest in-house shoestring potatoes to add some crunch, and slices of smoked meat that was pure heaven. I seriously considered going back the following day for another one, that's how good this special was. Now I gotta go back and try the regular menu! read more

Visited here last weekend for dinner at around 6pm (so early). We were the only ones there and it stayed that way until we left at 6:30. You order at the counter, which we didn't know before arriving. Not a huge deal. The owners/cooks were there and were very nice people. We were told it would be 10-12 min (no problem!) but ours came out in about 6 min. The fritters were amazing and so were the white beans. The chicken, though, tasted good but was not hot. It was temperature. Sauce looked amazing but i couldn't taste it. My husband liked the meatloaf but was disappointed at the portion size. We ended our meal with the banana pudding cake (infatuation said it was a must) but it just tasted like cold white cake (it was stored in the fridge). My guess is that this place is focused on "to go" orders which is why food temp was off. read more
