Five-spice beef (so good but sadly, no longer available), katsu chicken, cucumber salad & bok choy (both too salty)
    Peg C.

Grillbird and Salad Party are a solid choice for takeout! There's a really narrow counter with a few high chairs so it's not a good place for eating in. Take your food to go and enjoy it at home. The first time we went in and ordered at the little ipad kiosk and it took a good 15-20 minutes to get our order. But it was good! Generous and tasty portions of teriyaki chicken, chicken katsu, and five-spice beef! But the cucumber salad was too salty and vinegary, and both the sesame noodles and bok choy were also way too salty. Still, it impressed us enough that we tried it again a few weeks later. The second time we ordered through the Toast app and by the time we got there in 15 minutes, our order was ready. That time, we enjoyed the five-spice beef again (soooo good!) and a build-your-own salad that tasted really fresh. Highly recommend the lemon vinaigrette--it's not too sour and not too salty, it's just right. In our third order tonight the teriyaki chicken was good and the mac salad was pretty good too, though a bit too much mayo. But the sesame noodles were a salt bomb again. We also wanted to order the five-spice beef but found out they no longer offer it due to the increased price of beef! Nooooooo! We were SO SAD to hear this because their beef is delicious, tender, and one of the best things on their menu. My hubs and I like this place so we will definitely be back, but we will stick to the entrees with rice, the BYO salads, and pass on the much too-salty sides. If they adjust their seasoning, we might try the sides again. If the price of beef goes back down, we really hope they will bring back the excellent five-spice beef someday!

Really.good.chicken this way! Apparently this location opened about 6-7 months ago ago, so I've been missing out. I easily ordered pick up on a Friday evening and it was hot and ready to go when I arrived. Street parking sucks. Be patient and plan accordingly. We tried the plate of half teriyaki and half katsu, egg rolls, pot stickers, the boom boom chicken, and the sesame chicken. Favorites: juicy flavorful chicken breast teriyaki, and the crispy yet juicy katsu, and the yummy mac salad. I wish they allowed you to order mac only for the plates. The rice portions are very large, which some may love. Egg rolls were crunchy and flavorful too! They provide so many yummy sauces that I couldn't tell which paired with what. I'll ask next time. Service was friendly, and they have tablets to place your order when you arrive. This is a pick up location, so there are no seats! The price point was fair for what I received. Looking forward to coming back!

Delicious food! We got takeout and portions were generous and food was tasty! I got the chicken teriyaki with the beet salad and cucumbers! Loved it! I also added their spicy teriyaki sauce on the side and it was a nice touch! Overall, love their food and will definitely return to try their other items!

I've been wanting to try Grillbird for a long time, and so when I heard a new location was opening close by I knew I had to try it! I walked here with a friend on a Friday night around 6pm. When we arrived there were only a couple other people online, but there were several more online orders shown on the queue screen. You order at the counter and then they call your name. One important thing to note is there is basically no seating here, which is kind of a bummer. Plan on bringing your takeout home. Grillbird also shares a space with Salad Party, which is nice if you've got a group that is craving different foods. I ordered the Build Your Own Plate with Salad 1/2 chicken teriyaki and 1/2 chicken katsu. For sides I chose the Mac and cucumber salads. Everything was delicious and the portions were generous, I had plenty of leftovers. My favorite was the chicken teriyaki. The sides were also good, though the Mac salad does have a lot of mayo. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and would definitely come back for takeout!

If you have ever read any of my reviews before, you would know that I have a deep appreciation for yaki, and I'm a sauce boi 'til the death of me. I've heard from many of my most trustworthy yaki-obsessed comrades that the Grillbird in West Seattle is the place to go for that good meat. I was ecstatic when I heard that there was opening in Phinney. I think it's cool that they have this whole ghost kitchen set up going on. It's easy to order something for takeout once you get there, but I'd recommend ordering ahead to grab it so you don't have to wait. I was thrown off not seeing a spicy yaki option, but you can add that on the side before you check out. Adding that extra spice is critical in my opinion, it minimizes the potential for bland chicken. However, this chicken is NOT BLAND! It's some of the most flavorful I've had in Seattle. And they do not go light on the sauce, even before giving you an extra side of it for free. That's what we love to see as sauce bois. Everything here is intensely flavorful (I see you complaining about too much salt, miss, you should not be going to a teriyaki establishment in the first place. Do you think they're using low-sodium versions of everything?). The chicken has an incredibly powerful peppery taste, which is unique to Grillbird. It tastes like they may be Szechuan peppercorns, because they have a slightly numbing effect. It's not that hot though, so don't be scared. My spicy sauce wasn't that hot either, so I was wondering if I accidentally got the regular type. But either way, the sauce has the consistency that you want - thick and sweet. My only knock is that the chicken is sliiiiightly dry, but the sauce more than makes up for that. The char on the chicken itself is very nice, and adds an excellent textural contrast on every bite. I will for sure be back to have more teriyaki, and to try some other things.

Delicious experience at the new Grillbird on Phinney Ridge. I ordered the Build Your Own Plate including grilled and bang bang chicken, mac and cucumber salads. Everything was freshly made - the grilled chicken thigh had a nice char and cooked perfectly. The bang bang was flavorful and had a nice kick to it. Both salads were good! Orders are placed on the kiosk upon entry. My order was ready in about 14 minutes on a Monday afternoon at 2:30 pm. There were 3 tables for seating outside, no seating inside. I plan to order online next time.

How I heard of this place: Friends were eagerly anticipating the opening of this new spot in Phinneywood. With their rave reviews of the restaurant in West Seattle, I, too, began following their long-awaiting opening. Type of cuisine: Teriyaki chicken, miso salmon, Katsu, beef, and sesame tofu & cauliflower are among the main dishes, along with sides of rice, noodles, cabbage, and a plethora of others; from Mac salad to beet salad, cucumber salad to egg rolls, there's a little something for everyone. Additionally, in the same space/kitchen and order counters side-by-side, Salad Party offers entree sized fresh salads to accompany or create a meal on their own. Ambiance: Simple, nothing much to speak of. Clean and minimalist. Bright orange barquette in a sparse lobby available for patrons awaiting their orders. What I ordered: On this first visit, and having heard the portions are large, we selected two plates (mains and two sides each). Teriyaki chicken with shredded cabbage, beet salad, and cucumber salad, as well as Bang Bang Chicken with white rice, mac salad, and 2 mini egg rolls. What I loved: The freshness of the cabbage soaked in teriyaki sauce under the beautifully grilled chicken. The cucumber and beet salads were full of flavor and robust in portions. The bang bang chicken had a nice kick of spice, especially good when the sauces soaked into the rice beneath. The egg rolls and mac salad, which was too peppery, I think we will skip on future orders. Why I loved it: It's a quick and easy spot to stop for a take away lunch during the week. Though, as they continue with their soft opening, having opened early this week, there are still some kinks to work through and speed to establish. Cost: average to high

Looking for a more satisfying and nourishing fast food option? Grillbird is a fairly new addition to the Phinney Ridge neighborhood. It's so convenient to place your order online and in almost no time at all the food is ready to be picked up, They have great choices and options. Try them out soon if you haven't had a chance to yet.

Automated ordering system a little confusing (split between salad party and grill bird). Friendly people working. Sat outside. Seems to be limited seeking. Cucumber sides, rice, Mac salad were a hit. The sauce, smoky, sweet and spicy was very good. $18 for a plate lunch, little pricey but portion enough for two. Ok. The primary reason for the lower rating. The chicken was absolutely dry. You can somewhat see the dry surface texture from the photo. I heard they are using a special oven to cook the chicken, I miss a proper grill. Not sure if I will eat again if chicken is that dry.

Great Japanese take out, and a great addition to the phinney neighborhood ! I got the teriyaki chicken, chicken katsu, rice, greens (baby bok choy), and spring rolls. All were great, though I wish there was a little more rice for an adequate ratio of meat to rice. One "plate" was big enough for me to split into 2 meals so I was very satisfied.

Food: The ebi katsu sandwich was so good!!! Crunchy shrimp sando that hit the spot. Can't wait to come back for it. Fries were also SO good. So crunchy. Not mushy or soggy. The strawberry and pog lemonade were good as well! Wait: We went on a Sunday around 12:30 and waited about 15-20 min for our food. They were super busy with online orders but they were so nice and the food was delish. Definitely want to go back to try some of their salads! Seating: There are a 2 seats inside and a 6 outside. It's mostly a takeout spot.

So glad Grillbird opened up near me! I've had the one in West Seattle and always wished there was a closer location to me. The space itself is super cute and is joint grillbird and salad party! There's no seating so it is take out only. We ordered some takeout online, and the food was ready exactly when it said it would be. We ordered two build your own plates - one with spicy garlic chicken and sesame chicken and another with chicken teriyaki and bang bang chicken. They were great! Portions of chicken were large but I do wish there was more rice to go with the large meat portions. The rice was also covered in sauce from the chicken, and I prefer not as much sauce on my rice but that's a personal preference! I think our favorite was the chicken teriyaki and spicy garlic chicken! The spicy garlic chicken actually had a little bit of a kick, and the chicken teriyaki was cooked really well. We also got the fried cauliflower as a side, and that was great! Definitely will be coming back and will have to try salad party as well!

The charming outdoor seating immediately caught our attention and made for a relaxing lunch spot. We ordered the Café Mezze Plate, Shakshuka, and Mushroom Toast--more food than the two of us would normally order, but since it was our first visit, we wanted to sample a variety of dishes. The Café Mezze Plate came with an assortment of mezze, including hummus, whipped feta, roasted eggplant, green tahini, marinated olives, cucumber and turmeric cauliflower pickles, along with house-made pita and pita chips. It was fun to try so many different flavors, although the portions felt a bit small for the $36 price tag. The Shakshuka was flavorful but a little spicy for my daughter, though I enjoyed it. It came with two perfectly cooked eggs and two pieces of house-made pita. At $18, it was decent, but nothing particularly memorable. We couldn't finish the Mushroom Toast, so we took it home and had it the next day. It actually reheated very well and still tasted delicious. Overall, this café has a lovely atmosphere, especially the outdoor seating, making it a great place to gather with friends. The food was enjoyable, but the prices felt a bit on the high side for what was served. I'd be open to coming back if I were in the area, though it wouldn't be at the top of my recommendation list.

Interestingly, the meat came in two separate pieces, arranges somewhat like an X or a cross in the middle of the sandwich. This certainly wasn't the eating experience of a typical sandwich with a circular meat patty, and I appreciate the creativity here. The meat was insanely crunchy, oily, and quite plentiful. Each bite felt a bit like you were biting into a crunchy churro, but without the sweetness. I did think the outside of the pork did overpower the inside, though, as I didn't taste the meat or the fat inside much, and due to the amount of breading the pieces ended up being a bit chewy The bun was quite good as well - it was pretty soft, fluffy, and served as a really good bookend to all the ingredients inside. I thought the lettuce and onions also were good. I don't know if I'm a fan of the jelly on the sandwich - but again, I do like the creativity. What did shine here was the aioli, however. In a lot of places, you don't really taste the aioli on a burger - but that flavor was ever-present on this sandwich, and it was really fantastic. The absolute best part of the meal, by far, though, was the biscuit I have to start with how huge this is. This is certainly not the size of a typical Southern-style buttermilk biscuit - rather this biscuit makes no apologies in its effort to stand out from the crowd. Absolutely nobody would mistake this for a traditional biscuit - on the contrary, I think on first glance most people would assume this isn't a biscuit at all. It's shaped more like a massive pastry. I hesitate to say that looks are deceiving, because it does look great, but its taste manages to elevate past that. This was SO good. The edges are baked perfectly - they're oily, crispy, crunchy, and perfectly flaky. All four sides provide an amazing base - like the walls of a fortress that surround the soft, tender interior of the biscuit. You can see the different layers from the outside as well. When it comes to the inside, there was so much to get through but every bite was heavenly. So much credit here goes to the honey butter - which when spread onto the biscuit, raises the taste level of the entire thing. I put so much honey butter on mine that I nearly finished the whole thing. When it came to the jam, it was good, but since it didn't combine great with the honey butter I mostly ended up just using the latter This place was expensive - around 16 dollars for the sandwich and 8 for the biscuit - however, I was quite full at the end

Lorenzo opened Paseo in 1994, where his popular Cuban roast pork sandwiches were regarded as among the best in the country. After years of local expansion, Paseo abruptly filed for bankruptcy in 2014. The brand was subsequently bought out by a local entrepreneur, but the sale did not include Paseo's secret recipes (the reboot attempted to reverse engineer the sandwiches with varying success). So, in 2015, Lorenzo's sons revived Paseo under a new name, Un Bien, armed with their father's original recipes. Nowadays, Un Bien is generally regarded as superior to Paseo, and you can grab their Caribbean sandos at one of the three locations across Seattle. You can't miss the pastel pink-and-teal palette of the original shack on an otherwise drab block of Ballard. As you approach the wooden window, you are greeted by the aroma of sauteed meats and veggies. Communal laquered wood benches are lined up underneath a covered pergola. Fifties hits ring respectfully around the kitchen. My partner and I visited for late weekday lunch, and we ordered immediately. We opted to focus on the signature pork shoulder, so we split the #1 Caribbean Roast and #2 The Press. Across both sandwiches, we were impressed by the tender pork, rich onions, lemon-forward aioli, and marinade-soaked baguette. The standard roast pork sandwich added on pickled jalapenos and crisp romaine, culminating in a dynamic flavor that accentuated the meat. Meanwhile, The Press featured tart banana peppers, smoked ham, and melty Swiss, amping up the sweet and savory flavors alike; we agreed that this extra-messy sandwich just edged out the standard version. Our order took just minutes to be prepared, and the bill just topped $30. Despite the fanfare, I still found myself surprised by just how satisfying Un Bien's sandwiches turned out to be. Across all the food I ate in Seattle, only these pork sandwiches would be worth a return visit, even if I had to venture out of my way.

Messy, pricey, totally overrated…read more My family and I visited Un Bien and arrived approximately 45 minutes before closing. We ordered promptly, but were told we would only have about 10 minutes to use the seating area before it closed. When we asked for clarification because the restaurant was advertised as being open until 9:00 PM, staff confirmed they were open until then but said the seating area would close earlier anyway. After receiving our food, we were told not to sit down and were asked to leave the seating area altogether. The interaction felt abrupt and discourteous, especially given that we had arrived well before closing and had purchased food with the expectation that we could eat on-site. The food itself was average, but the poor customer service and inconsistent messaging about seating left a much stronger impression than the meal. There are other better places. Skip.
