Umi is the best Sushi restaruant I have legitimately ever visited. I have had sushi in Vegas, NYC, California, etc. but this tops it all! The Verve Roll is a shrimp tempura roll covered in fresh scallops, shrimp, and crab. AMAZING. The AG roll is out of this world. I haven't tried anything that isn't phenomenal on the menu. 27 Dec 2019 - this was our first visit to Umi for a lunch-time get together with family after Christmas. The staff was great with reservations and even seated us in a private room due to reserving a party of 8 and they had the available space. This was nice so that we could easily talk amongst our entire party. They were not doo crowded at this time. We had great service and the food was fantastic. The Japanese curry was thick like gravy and the small was a huge portion but it tastes even better reheated. We will return. Facility was spotless and loved the salt scrub in the women's bathroom. That was a nice touch. It was nice they offered a kids menu even though our 7 year old son loves sushi and did not order a kids meal (bento box instead). They are strict on the kids menu age though- one of the cousins 14 year old who is not a sushi fan ordered a more plain kids item but was then charge $3 extra (guess the kids could have swapped meals) just a heads up. Helpful with questions, suggestions, and a charming personality to go along. Even helped clean up a water spill I had. The only reason I can't give this 5 stars is because of the sushi. The specialty rolls were all very creative. We went with some suggestions from the server and I had them make a made-to-order roll that I wanted to try (basically a spicy salmon roll). Portions are fantastic, but the flavor was just... lacking. Everything seemed reliant on sauces for flavor, and nothing overwhelmed me. We have enjoyed dinner several times and it has always been lovely. We are both vegan and usually start with their vegan roll, I don't know if its on the menu but its asparagus and avocado. It's not a huge roll, so more like an appetizer. We have also had the edamame and the cucumber salad, love the cucumber salad, its tomato, cucumber and avocado in a light vinegar dressing. We usually rotate between the vegetable udon and the vegetable lo mein for our main dishes, both are excellent. The last visit I ordered the fried tofu cubes very good, I would consider it an appetizer or side size and not a main dish. I have always dined in the bar section. I noticed another yelper commented and posted a photo of a short pour of wine, in the many times I have been here and ordered wine I have never received a short pour. read more

Came here for date night with my gf and first impression is great. Really nice upscale environment and nice booth seating (even though I hate booths). It's really cool they have tablets showing pictures of almost everything on the menu. We ordered the red dragon roll and sun roll for sushi and had a shrimp teriyaki entree. At first glance of the plates, it looks amazing! Very nice presentation. But the quality of the food we both thought were pretty average. Red dragon roll was the best of the food options we chose. Great roll, good bite size and a little kick. Sun roll is very good if you like tempura rolls (I personally like them). The shrimp teriyaki was pretty plain to me and no flavor that really stood out. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but not as good as I expected for the price. We also ordered the lychee sake which is very good. Overpriced but still tastes great. read more

Food was excellent, service was excellent.. We scheduled our reservation through yelp, which by the way was extremely convenient.. this was our 2nd visit to umi. The first visit was very close to the opening and it was extremely busy, but worth the wait.. This visit it was not busy at all and the waiter was very attentive and checked in often and gave us recommendations. We got the cowboy roll, mr shingh roll, baked scallop roll, dr esquerra roll, calamari, spicy scallop hand rolls and one other I can't remember the name of.. the only thing was I wasn't super impressed with was the spicy scallop hand rolls.. Because of how much I like other Japanese restaurants in Fort Wayne, I was anxious to try Umi and a little ready to be disappointed, if I'm being honest. Well, I was not disappointed with any aspect of my visit to Umi. I made a reservation for myself, my husband and our two friends that were here from Missouri and we were promptly greeted and seated at a very nice, spacious booth (the atmosphere was chill and inviting). We had all sorts of questions about adult beverages. My girl friend and I wanted sake but they had a plethora of choices and we wanted something unlike traditional sake, my husband wanted a Manhattan and my friend's husband was curious about the variety of Japanese Whiskeys. Our server was so incredibly nice, patient...and knowledgeable! Also, the drinks he suggested were completely on point. We decided on a white peach sake that was served in the bottle, in an ice bucket on the table (rad), my husband got what the server explained to be Umi's version of a Manhattan, and my friend's husband had Scotch. The menu at Umi is not overwhelming but I was still having a hard time deciding on an entree' just because everything looked so good (there was a partial digital menu at the table)Again, we ordered stuff out of whack, asked some more questions and our server was nothing but patient and even funny. For starters we had Gyoza (fried dumplings), lobster cakes, and shrimp tempura. Everything came out timely and was extremely fresh tasting and flavorful, seriously...so good! My husband and friends all got Bento boxes that included shrimp and vegetable tempura, a California roll, an entree' and a choice of Miso soup or house salad. However, each had a different entree' (filet teriyaki, chicken teriyaki and tonkatsu-breaded/fried pork). I decided to branch out from what I might usually order from a Japanese restaurant and got the chicken Japanese Curry Udon. I am not sorry. It was so unique to me and it was absolutely delicious! Again, each of our sentiments was that all of the dishes were fresh and so so flavorful. My dinner was amazing and our table fell silent after our dishes arrived, just saying...not one of us were even mildly disappointed. Our server did not bother us but remained attentive. Also, a nice gentleman I would assume is a manager checked in with us twice, briefly. To top things off we shared a slice of creme brûlée cheesecake and Umi remained consistent. Mmmm! My friends were super stoked, I was glad to have taken them somewhere amazing while they were in town and now my husband and I have someplace else to have some food that's super tasty and great! Food was good. But overall friendliness and feeling of being welcome was horrible. My wife and I wanted to sit at the bar. 4 open seats. The bartender, who I learn later is the GM, says no. The seats are reserved. Offers nothing else other than "What do you want to drink?" In a manner as if we were somehow interrupting his evening. So we stood waiting for the receptionist to seat us. We finally get seated at an already empty table . The 4 seats at the bar stay unoccupied for at least an hour or more. 2 stay unoccupied for the entire evening while other seats of the bar open up. And ordering a second martini was a big mistake. Tasted like pure olive juice. The bartender/GM will never see us walk in and spend money at UMI again. read more

Rough times at Umi! I don't live in Fort Wayne, but was this place was recommended to me by a friend, so I made an effort to stop on my last visit to town. I was disappointed. To start, it's a very weird building. I'm not sure what it was before, but it feels very much like an office building. There is also a weird drive-through with two windows that serve no purpose and then commercial size sliding doors and bathrooms. I felt that I should be sitting down with my banker, that was how cold and weird it felt. The tables offered iPads to look at pictures of food, but they served no other purpose, such as being able to order or pay from them, so I wasn't sure what they were there for. Can't you just put pictures in your menus? My friend and I split a bottle of sake and both tried a different bento box. I appreciate the bento boxes came with a large amount of food, but it tasted very cheap, like a quick take-out version, not fine dining. The California roll was the best part, but definitely tasted like something you could find anywhere. I thought my miso soup and breaded vegetables were almost inedible. Rice was bland and teriyaki chicken had a weird tang. Our server was prompt and pleasant, but that was about the only good part. Overall, I mostly found the experience to be very odd and I was confused how this is considered fine dining since it had such a strange vibe. My wife and I went here recently and it was incredible. We started off with the Lobster Scallop Cakes and they were delightful and so full of seafood, not packed with breading and binder like you might get elsewhere. My wife enjoyed the Verve and UMI Sunshine rolls. I had a piece of the Verve and it was delicious. I ordered the Cowboy Roll and 2 Nigiri choices, Red Snapper and Shrimp. The Cowboy Roll is perfect roll for anyone especially those new to sushi as a great way to try it. The Red Snapper tasted of such freshness. It was so tender and just melted in your mouth. The picture includes the Cowboy Roll and 2 Nigiri I had selected. I would highly recommend this restaurant to any sushi lover and we've already started planning our next trip back! read more

We had lunch here today - our second time. It was extremely slow, customer-wise - I hope that's not an ominous sign, because this is a phenomenal place for sushi. Service was very good. Inside is really beautiful - from an ambience standpoint it's one of my favorite places in Fort Wayne. And you can't get sushi like this anywhere else in town. I had the Diva Roll and it was super fresh, with tuna, cream cheese and chili oil. My son had the Orange-go-go with pretty good slabs of salmon - it had a little bit of a kick to it. We also had the vegetable tempura which was super tasty although the white potatoes were a little on the over done side and the sweet potatoes were slightly undercooked. My favorite, which we tried last time, is the Dr. Singh - giant pieces of mango and shrimp, so good! I have been here twice. The service is great. I have been searching for a great sushi place ever since moving from California for the past 2 years. This is as good as it gets in the Midwest. Spicy seafood soup - Red Snapper, Scallops, Surf Clam, Shrimp & Octopus In Spicy Fish Broth (choice of moderate to spicy). I had a medium level of spicy and it really did have a kick. However, there were no surf clam and no octopus in my soup as described in the description. Bummer. The soup was still good tho. Tuna Cubes Fresh-Cut Blue-Fin Tuna & Avocado in a Spicy Soy Sesame Marinate My friend and I shared a half-order of the tuna cubes fresh. It was delicious. The marinate was just right and not too salty. Seaweed Salad - this seaweed salad was made just right. It wasn't overly dressed with sesame oil. I ordered an orange a go go roll both times. The first time I had it, it was delicious. There was a good spice kick to it. However, the second time I ordered it, I was not happy with the roll. Went in for their opening night with a reservation for my husband and I. The staff was absolutely amazing. Everyone chatted with us, our waitress was great and it was just all around fun. Sadly, that didn't extend to their food. I don't know if it was because our reservation was later in the evening after the dinner rush, or if they were too busy smiling for the cameras but the best part of the meal was the desert they proudly claimed was from a local bakery and not even made in house. I tried a variety of two piece sushi, all of which tasted a little less fresh than other cheaper local sushi places, and my husband tried the teriyaki chicken. Which was nothing more than unseasoned chicken breast sliced into too big slices and smothered in teriyaki sauce. Something I can make better with some marinating time in my own kitchen at home. When talking about the experience later with coworkers we came up with the perfect description of the food. It's Japanese food cooked by white guys, and you can tell. Not worth the price, the smaller family owned places are both cheaper and better. But the staff was amazing, and if they stick to bar drinks and try more bar friendly snack foods and lose the pretentious menu they'll do fine. Great even. read more

My friends and I went in for the soft opening. The waiters were great but we were there for 2.5 hours! We left right after eating our food so it took a looonnnggg time for our food to come out. We ordered drinks, sushi, and entrees. If we come back, we will only order sushi because the bento boxes that we ordered for entrees were really just okay. Tried it during the soft opening, as it opens January 4. Beyond impressed. I honestly expected mediocre food & poor service, as they were practicing to get it right. Not at all what I experienced. Fast & great service overall. Ritzy vibe, but not stuffy at all. Reservation was at 7:15, but arrived about 15 mins early and we were still seated. I requested a drink that I saw on Instagram, only to find out it was a New Years Eve special. They made an exception & made it for me anyway - awesome! Started with the appetizer our server recommended- Dynamite Shrimp. Not at all what I expected, as I pictured it to be similar to a Bonefish Bang Bang Shrimp. The shrimp was not fried & was mixed with a lot of onion. I would probably order again, but think they need to add more shrimp, less onion - the sauce is very good though. Followed with the House Salad. I would skip this in the future (not because it wasn't good but you basically get one with one of my favorite rolls - soon to mention). I'm a HUGE fan of Fort Wayne's own, Asakusa. One of my favorite rolls there is the Seariously Salmon roll. I ordered the Orange Go Go Roll in hopes that it would be somewhat comparable. I thought this would be my favorite roll, but it did not meet my high expectations of what Asakusa puts out. For that reason, I would not order this roll again. I also felt similarly about the Red Dragon Roll. HOWEVER, I would order again the Yuki Roll & Cowboy Roll (both will be musts whenever I visit). I was a bit hesitant as our server didn't completely sell the Yuki Roll; however I was intrigued as I LOVE super white tuna. This roll was definitely my favorite of the raw fish. I also tried something unique, the Cowboy Roll. Shrimp tempura roll, topped with onion mushroom & FILET! Yes, filet. Also, this is why I would skip the House Salad, as you basically get the exact salad for free in the middle of your roll. I'll admit I was hesitant to order this roll, but it was incredible. A must. If you are someone or are bringing someone who refuses to eat sushi, eat this roll. I was very tempted by the dessert features, but could not follow through with them as I was too full. The food is always good here. We've never had something we don't like. I don't eat fish and I still like it. Would highly suggest the beef nagimaki is my favorite thing. I ordered Teriyaki Salmon Bento Box today as a carry-out for $37 + tip. Very disappointed as I have frequented the Umi Terre HaUte, Indiana location many times and my expectations were high. The packaging was poor. The salmon w/ sauce was placed in the same container as my shrimp and vegetable tempura. Hence, when I arrived home, it was soggy and I threw it away. The California rolls were bland, not the fresh quality of ingredients as the Terre Haute Umi location and other less expensive Japanese restaurant. Even the Miso soup was not very tasty. I ate at Umi last night. Had the sashimi deluxe. I lived in Japan for 23 years, so I know I may sound like a snob here, but this was not good. Starting with the Miso soup - obviously not Japanese miso. When the sashimi came every piece had the same general taste of that soup. In the world of sashimi this is NOT goo, as one of sashimi's main points is the subtle difference in tastes between fish selections. The rice - Japanese rice is moist and sticky - this was not. Also our waiter set out one dish for soy sauce and wasabi. You do NOT do that in a Japanese restaurant. Umi is good. The atmosphere is stylish and modern. My girlfriends and I were able to score a private "room". It was a booth that appeared to seat 6 in it's own private cubby space. It was perfect. The sushi and drink menu are on a tablet which is not normally my favorite thing, but at Umi I liked it because there were great pictures of all the sushi rolls and it helped me decide on what to order. The rest of the menu (apps, soup, salad, entrees) are on a traditional menu. Drinks are solid. Balanced and just enough alcohol. I went with the vegetables egg rolls, traditional salad, and half order of the Dr. Singh roll. The egg rolls were small bite size and the portion would only feed 1-2 people. They were very good. The traditional salad was made with fresh leafy greens and a flavorful ginger dressing. The Dr. Singh roll was nothing I had had before. It was a fairly traditional roll with a bunch of lobster, crab, shrimp, mango and spicy sauce piled on top. It was really unique and very well liked by all my friends. The half order was huge. I shouldn't have eaten it all, but I did. Overall service was fine. The hostess station seemed to be unorganized and it took awhile to even be acknowledged. Being a new restaurant I can be more forgiving with minor hiccups like that. Price point is a bit high for sushi. They do have a coat check which is great for the winter.
