Came here on a Wednesday night and sat at the bar by myself. The restaurant was empty except for a couple other people who left before me; this was from about 6:30-8pm. I was told they have 1 team that all works Wed-Sun (closed Mon and Tues). The bartender was really nice and honest about advice on the menu. I had questions about the sashimi salad and appreciated his opinion on it. When I asked how the crab rangoons were, I could tell he genuinely thought they were a good item to order - and they did not disappoint! The picture only shows 4 rangoons because I already ate 3, so the fact it comes with 7 is a great deal. I also ordered the chirashi since I love sashimi, and I was told I was given a few extra pieces. 2 salmon, 2 tuna, 3 yellowtail, 2 scallop, 2 unagi, 2 octopus (or squid?), 2 imitation crab, some salmon roe, and 2 lobster tail chunks; seasoned sushi rice on the bottom. The bento box is a good bet if you're visiting Umi for lunch and/or you're dining alone. I was doing both! The lunch bento box is straight up hits: a California roll, shrimp tempura, vegetable tempura, rice and your choice of teriyaki'd protein (chicken, salmon, beef, shrimp or basa, a type of catfish). I chose salmon, which was cooked perfectly. The salmon was placed on top of the rice, so the rice kind of soaked up the teriyaki sauce and made it nice and delicious. My bento lunch came with a cup of miso soup, and it was so nourishing and briny, like only miso soup can be. So yeah. I didn't taste any of the sushi here at Umi, unless you count a California roll, which I don't. But they have lots of different types of rolls, nigiri and hand rolls. Umi also has a large menu of sake. So large, that I thought I would be remiss to not get sake to go with my lunch. The menu made me do it! So I got the chiku bai Nigori sake, and it was so smooth. Sake is served in a small pitcher with a small ceramic cup. I wasn't sure if the sake pitcher was supposed to be shared, but there was only one cup, and there was only one me, so I went for it. A sake buzz during lunch ... how extravagant. I visited for a late lunch, around 1:30 p.m., and I was the only person in the whole place. I got the full attention of the very nice server, who had 20 pens in her apron ("For when it gets busy and it's only me," she said, because I asked her why she has 20 pens in her apron.) The place has a simple yet clean interior, which I appreciated. Prices are on the higher side, and the drinks could definitely be better. Mine tasted mostly like syrup, and the orange garnish seemed like it had been sliced the day before--it was dry and not fresh. For $13-$14 (the price of the cheapest drink), I expected more effort and real ingredients like fresh juice. Our server was great--friendly and attentive. But the real surprise was the sushi. Really solid Japanese cuisine (unfortunately I forgot to take pictures) Gave Umi a go for lunch on a Thursday and was very pleased... Super nice place when you walk in -- Modern, well decorated, and very clean. We we're promptly greeted and sat... Our server was outstanding and very friendly/accommodating during our whole meal. I had the seaweed salad and chicken teriyaki bento box... Both were excellent. Definitely didn't need the seaweed salad because the bento box was huge, but I'm glad I got it anyway, because it was awesome. Umi is a bit pricey ($35 for lunch w/ tip), but the food and service was excellent, so spending $$$ on good food is always worth it... Definitely be back. read more

I tried the Rangoon Dip, the vegan pad Thai, the salmon roll and the hummingbird cake The dip was good. I would have liked a touch of sweetness, but only because that's what I'm used to with crab Rangoon. But you could definitely taste and see the crab. The pad Thai was heavy handed. Not only was it massive, but it had a ton of sauce and then a ton of peanut sauce on top. The noodles were overdone. I like pad Thai that is light. This tasted heavy. The spicy salmon roll was well done. Huge chunks of salmon. It was the most meat I've ever had in one of these types of rolls. The Hummingbird cake was amazing. So moist. So flavorful. I don't usually like cake and I LOVED it. Overall, the next time I go I think I'll stick to sushi because that seems to be their forte. read more

I have frequented this place several times. Umi, every time, is excellent in what they do! The facilities are modern and comfortable. The atmosphere is made to enjoy a relaxing dinner with conversation. The staff is always friendly and professional. They know their products well. On this visit we started with the vegetable rolls. This are sliced at an angle lengthwise so they are very easy to share. The filling is crisp, fresh and tasty. The fried case is done perfect - enough crisp without an oily taste. The sweet and sour sauce is typical of most but very good. We also tried the crab Rangoon. The waitress said they were the best she had ever tasted - they were! The filling was rich, smooth and had a slight crab flavor...enough to over power the cream cheese filling. The casing was again fried to perfection. I started the meal with the Miso soup and salad. The Miso soup wasn't distinctive..just refreshing. The salad had a slight ginger dressing taste and was incredibly fresh. For dinner I had the spicy salmon sushi. The Salomon was tasty with a good consistency and very fresh. On previous visits I have had the specialty rolls - all delicious and creative. Definitely give this place a try! read more

We recently discovered that UMI is open for brunch on Sunday from 8 to 1. Decided to try it today and was NOT disappointed. The service was outstanding and the food was fantastic. I had biscuits and gravy, which was so good, better than my homemade (and I'm pretty good). Second time coming here, and I wish I could say better things about this place. From the strange artwork on the wall to our rough around the edges server, it's hard to justify $90 for our 2 person dinner. The food was decent, but it's not mind boggling. We had the dynamite shrimp and they were fine, but they came on a bed of uncooked onions. A whole plate of raw onions with spicy mayo drenched shrimp isn't really the most appetizing flavor. My wine pour was short and the sushi was just all right. We had 2 speciality rolls which were the best aspect of the meal, but the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls didn't even have much spice. Server didn't know all her coke products as my cousin wanted cherry coke and she said there wasn't any then when she came back she said "I lied" we have cherry coke. Also said they have weird ice cream "green tea" which is very common in Japanese food restaurants. Everyone's miso soup was different. One was really cloudy, one was less clear and another one was really clear. This shows the server or cook that puts the miso soup in the bowl is not stirring before they serve the soup. I ordered the basadon (fried white fish with peanut oil that supposed to have asparagus). When I got my basadon, there were no asparagus and they used green onions to put over the fried fish. Don't know why they didn't have asparagus. I also ordered the integrity roll which has hamachi (yellowtail) with chopped green onions rolled in rice and seaweed that is tempura fried and topped with spicy ponzu sauce. I asked for an eel and avocado roll, they said they it isn't on the menu but they would see what they could do, it was one of the best ones I have had. Decor is beautiful. Prices are in line with the product and service. One note, my daughter ordered the Dr Singe (sp) roll, it was stunning and delicious.
