My favourite Italian restaurant...And I'm amazed that it's located right in my hometown of YEG. I've been lucky enough to have had some amazing Italian fare in various parts of Italy, US, Canada, HK, etc, and Uccellino is my fave. Full disclosure, I've only eaten at a few Michelin starred Italian spots, and they were amazing, but I found that only one or two dishes really blew me away. I've had the Chef's tasting menu here multiple times, and each time, I walk away completely satisfied (and very full). I won't go extensively into their menu (and ruin the surprise), but high level, here are some of my favourites: crostini's (like all of time), tagliatelle (wow), pollo al mattone (brick chicken). Took a recent trip to Edmonton and was recommended Uccellino by an old co-worker, so decided to check it out. Didn't have reservations, but thankfully the staff was able to accommodate a table of four on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was classy but casual. The service was top notch, and always attentive. Our server made sure to walk us through the entire menu and let us know of recommendations for our table size and dietary needs, which was great. From there, we ordered a little bit of everything and it was totally fine, but nothing really popped out as outstanding. Things that were really good, tho? The beef carpaccio (with asparagus, lemon, olive oil & Parmigiano Reggiano, $23) and the Ricotta Gnocchi (with basil pesto, $27). While the rest of the dishes we tried weren't underwhelming in any way, they just seemed totally fine. But I will say this: each dish is beautifully presented. It's like a wonderful piece of artwork that you can eat. Oh, if I can make one suggestion while I'm here? Order a cheese plate. This was probably one of the highlights of my meal as well. The pecorino fresco and pecorino stagionato with fig honey and roasted walnuts ($16) - like, my mouth is actually watering just thinking about it right now. Fuck. So if you want a delicious night out of real Italian food and are willing to pay just a little bit more, this is the place to go! Quick comment on the atmosphere: it's great! So lively, lots of people, somewhere in Edmonton to see or be seen especially on a weekend! As for the food, I've now been three times and will comment on the highlights. The corn and parmigiano crostini is SO good! I love lots going on in a dish and this one does it well. The beef carpaccio is literally the best beef carpaccio I've had in my life. It has celery root which gives it a great crunch but also covered in more cheese! For the mains, my favorite is the maccheroni. The pork is cooked so perfectly and the pasta is creamy and buttery. Literally no complaints for any of the food! The only reason they got bumped down a star was because of the wine menu. On two occasions, it didn't seem like the servers knew enough about wine or the wine on the menu. I'm hoping they will get more training in the future as it would be helpful for them to really understand the wines and how it pairs with the food in order to make a suggestion to a customer. We booked a birthday dinner at Uccellino on a Saturday night and were disappointed to say the least. The hostess was rude to our entire party from the moment we walked in. She was extremely short with us and did nothing to accommodate our group. I was so shocked at how she spoke to us. Our main dishes did not come out at the same time. A woman who was not our server also came and cleared all of our dinner plates at the end of the meal without asking if we were done. We stayed at least another 45 mins after she took it upon herself to take our plates still full of food. Last but certainly not least - I have confirmed 8 individuals who all got food poisoning symptoms following their meal at Uccellino, including myself. They all came either later that night or early the following day. We suffered over a full day of sickness. Almost every person in our party had thrown up their dinner within 8 hours of eating it. What the hell??? That is not coincidence. Many of us were so sick it woke us up in the middle of the night with the worst upset stomachs imaginable. Brutal. Positives: Our server did well and most of the food tasted good on the way down but it did not stay down. read more

Amazing!! I'm sure you're sick of hearing all the rave reviews but the pasta from here was the best I have ever tasted!! First off, they offer these complimentary green olives for the table which are so creamy and delightful I wanted to ask for more. They actually taste like real olive oil and not the briny mealy ones you're used to. The panzanella salad was so refreshingly tart and bright which reminded me of summer. The two pasta dishes we tried blew us away. The texture of the pasta was far superior than anything I've ever tasted. It had such a satisfying chew to it! We almost wanted to order a third pasta dish but they were so filling we just couldn't make stomach space for it. There is no doubt that I'll be back! read more

Visited this place during my two day visit to Edmonton. Located downtown, this place is easy to miss with a subtle signage on the outside of the restaurant. However, I don't think that deters anyone from coming as the place filled up quick from when we arrived at 5pm when they open. The restaurant layout is interesting, narrow but long. There are seats on the first floor and also on the second. There was also a separate room with about 8 seats upstairs, but not much privacy as it was a glass wall to separate the regular dining area and the room. The washrooms are located in the basement which means another set of stairs to go down if you are sitting on the second floor - needless to say, this restaurant is not friendly to anyone who are in a wheelchair and/or crutches, etc. We made reservations in advance, which thank goodness we did, because as mentioned, the place filled up quick. They said they save half the seats for resos and the other half for walk-ins which I think is a great idea to cater to various people. We ordered the duck liver crostini and the ricotta cheese and arugula crostini. Both were delicious, with the duck liver crostini being much heavier. I would recommend ordering this if you have a larger group to share with, but the crostinis are served in threes and very generous in portion. I felt like ordering two crostinis were too much bread, and it could most have likely been a smaller meal on its own. For the entrees, we ordered the tagliatelle and lamb to share between the two of us. The tagliatelle was rich and heavy, and the pasta was cooked perfectly - seriously, not too firm but also not soft and soggy and gross! Literally perfect. I think this dish is great to share because it would be too heavy for one person to eat one whole portion, but it is delicious. The lamb was served with a side of peppers? And some kind of green mush..? The plating was great but I did not care for either of the sides. The veggies added no texture or taste to the dish, so I only ate the lamb and left the rest. For dessert, we opted for the fruit sorbet - plum, pear, and white grape. My favourite was the white grape with the refreshingness of a sorbet and natural sweetness. I enjoyed the pear but did not like the texture as I don't like the texture of a regular pear (a bit of grindiness if you know what I mean?). The plum was too tart for my tastes, but everything was most definitely made from fresh fruits and you could really taste it. Overall I would recommend trying this place. I took off a star because of the sides on the lamb entree, but also because once the place became more full, it got extremely loud and it was hard to carry a conversation. I would like to be able to enjoy my food and also talk to whoever I am dining with. read more

Uccellino, which translates to 'little bird' in Italian, is located to the west of its two older sisters Corso 32 and Bar Bricco. The space is quite different from Corso and Bricco, as Uccellino is lit by natural light through a big front window and is more spacious with high ceilings and larger square footage. The dining space features neutral tones and minimalist decor, giving it a great modern, casual vibe from the moment you walk in. Given the larger space, Uccellino can seat roughly 70-80 guests, and the top floor hosts a space for private dining. Reservations at Corso 32 are difficult to score without advance booking, and Bar Bricco can have long wait times, so you'll be glad to hear that half the seats at Uccellino will remain unreserved for every dinner service. How great is that? Uccellino's menu features traditional dishes you would find in Central and Southern Italy. The menu is separated by multiple courses, in true Italian style: Fritti & Crostini, Antipasti, Primi, Secondi, Formaggi & Dolci. Among the multiple dishes there truly is something for everyone as the menu features some vegan and vegetarian options too. I didn't have trouble finding something I liked - my issue was trying to narrow it down to a few dishes as I was tempted by the whole menu! After ordering, every table gets a dish of olives for snacking. I'm not a huge fan of olives, but these green olives were brined beautifully with hints of orange and caraway, which complemented the buttery flesh and mild flavour. First to our table was the Potato Croquette ($10/5) made with parmigiano, lemon and nutmeg. The golden brown exterior had a nice crunch, like that of the delicious arancini at Corso 32. Breaking into the middle revealed a velvety mix of potato and fragrant parmigiano - a flavourful combination that makes these croquettes little umami bombs. Our next plate was the rustic Chicken Liver & Balsamico Crostini ($11/3), where the pate was spread across three large, lightly toasted crostini. The chicken liver itself was smooth and well seasoned, and I enjoyed the contrasting sweetness from the balsamic drizzled overtop. As we waited for our main courses to arrive, the kitchen sent out a plate of beautiful Gnudi Verde ($18). The six spinach and ricotta dumplings took up the flavour of the fragrant sage butter they were cooked in, and they were delicious. The light dusting of parmigiano was the perfect finishing touch to give them a bit more flavour without overpowering the delicate gnudi. Unlike Corso 32 & Bar Bricco, Uccellino is utilizing dry pasta from Italy, so we had to try them out for our mains. The dry pasta from Pasta Setaro and La Pasta dei Martellii is exclusive to the restaurant in Edmonton, and diners can actually purchase packages to take home and cook. For myself I couldn't pass up the Mezza Maniche Cacio e Pepe ($17) with Sardinian pecorino and fresh ground black pepper. Although simple, cacio e pepe is one of my favourite ways to eat pasta, and this dish hit the spot. The pasta was al dente with a great bite, the pepper carried a bit of heat, and the sauce was rich and clung to every bit of pasta. We also ordered the Maccheroni ($19) cooked in a pigs head and prosciutto ragu bianco, and finished with a dusting of parmigiano. The dish had a nice proportion of meat to it and it was another great pasta with balanced flavours. The Dolci portion of the menu offers four desserts, but I was particularly drawn to the Amedei Chocolate Budino. A budino is a dessert similar to a custard or pudding, so I was surprised to see the budino presented in the form of a slice of cake. On the first bite I fell in love - the texture was similar to that of a dense mousse, and it just melts in your mouth. The dark chocolate had just the right hint of sweetness, and the dallop of creme fraiche on the plate had a bit of tang that complemented the chocolate incredibly well. If you enjoy the Amedei chocolate truffles at Bar Bricco, you'll love this dessert. I thought that Corso 32's Chocolate Torta and Panna Cotta were my top desserts in Edmonton, but this budino is making me reconsider! Our visit was on the third opening day at Uccellino and we had a fantastic meal with exceptional service. I love that the restaurant is more casual compared to Chef Costa's other establishments, and the menu has a bit of a lower price point as well. The menu is fairly extensive and may possibly change from time to time due to seasonality, but there will be something for everyone. The bigger space will allow for more patrons and hopefully shorter wait times, which I'm sure many Edmontonians will be happy about. And with half the seats unreserved, that will allow for more spontaneous visits to the restaurant. Wow what a meal! When I take my lady out for date night we usually order 3-5 different dishes so that we can try a larger cross section of the menu. This being our first time to Uccellino and her first time to any Daniel Costa restaurant we came with a healthy appetite and open mind. EVERYTHING tasted good. Balanced flavours, perfect level of seasoning, classic pairing, and interesting combinations I didn't expect. The Beef Carpaccio is a MUST order. The level of lemon acid balanced out the tender and rich Beef Tenderloin while the celery root gave it crunch and complexity. Add the parmasan and you have the added bite and nutty flavour to round out the dish. The Gnocchi was the softest I've ever had. Because they used ricotta as the filling there was literally no chance that it would get chewy. This was a brilliant move and ensures that there is no equal to this dish in the whole city! Of course the rich bolognese added the umami and brought the clouds of gnocchi down to earth in a grounding and familiar manner. The lamb leg is traditionally a tougher cut that needs to be braised, roasted, or sous vide. I believe they went with the third option but they finished it on the grill to give it some charring. The centre was perfectly medium and there wasn't a tough piece throughout. I could have just ordered this for myself because I enjoy lamb so much. I got the reservation about 10 days in advance. I had initially tried to reserve their sister restaurant Corso32 but they were doing renovations and I couldn't get a seat before 9:30pm. From the two other sister restaurants (Corso 32, Bar Bricco), Uccellino has be my favourite for a variety of reason including: the laid back atmosphere, friendly and knowledgable staff, and most importantly - the delicious food and wine. I have been to Uccellino twice now and the food is phenomenal - everything on the menu is delicious. I would recommend picking anything as I have yet to be disappointed by any single dish on the menu. I highly recommend sharing places with a group of 2-3 so that you can a variety of items. To start, my partner and I got Anchovy & Butter. It had a bit too much butter for my liking but it was still quite delicious. The Pumpkin Agrodolce was by far our favourite. From the Primi section, I had Ravoli 'Nonnative Maria'. This dish was rich in flavour and was quite filling. I really enjoyed the Olive Oil Cake & Olive Oil Gelato. It sounds like a bizarre combination but it was my favourite. For chocolate lovers, I suggest getting the Chocolate Budino. I would recommend making reservations. We were able to get a spot without reservations however it was not a private table. If you are going for a more intimate event such a birthday celebration, book in advance! read more

Uccellino has to hands down, be one of my most favorite restaurants in the city. I've eaten at Corso 32 a number of times over the past few years and it has never really blown me away, so I wasn't entirely convinced when I heard that Daniel Costa was opening a restaurant directly next to the infamous 32-seated restuarant. However, I tried it out, and I was absolutely in love. What I like most about Uccellino is that it's going back to the basics of unpretentious Italian comfort food. Great ingredients, prepared simply without the frill but with all the perfection. I love that they are working to make the restaurant a bit more approachable (leaving a portion of the restaurant for walk-ins only, offering "family-style" service and Italian sized-portions). I've eaten at Uccellino a number of times. My two very favorite dishes are the Cacio e Pepe and the chicken cooked under a brick (with the panzanella salad). I could literally eat these dishes for my last meal on earth and die happy. The Cacio e Pepe is always cooked perfectly - tender with a tiny bit of chew, in fresh pecorino and lovely spicy black pepper. It's comforting and rich without being heavy or overwhelming. The chicken under a brick is always amazingly crispy and moist, served hot and in a large portion that is perfect for sharing. I also love the panzanella (bread and tomato) salad that comes with it - the bread is crispy, chewy, crunchy and seasoned in rich olive oil and basil, covered and soaking in fresh lush red tomatoes. Whenever I'm there, I try to eat the Olive Oil cake for dessert, which is rich and decadent but somewhat light and fluffy (how they can achieve these things, I have no idea). The olive oil (which I know, sounds gross) leads a lovely play on the light lemon flavor of the cake and pairs perfectly with the olive oil gelato (also a light lemon flavor with a slight richness). Service at Uccellino is impeccable and unlike Corso, you aren't going to end up staying for 3 hours to have dinner - they make sure your meals are timed out well but they don't draw out the experience. The restaurant itself is beautiful (shame it isn't Accessible, unless they're hiding an elevator somewhere that I haven't seen). If I could eat here every night, I absolutely would! And it's somewhat easy to get a reservation, so maybe I should start! read more

Oh Uccellino, I am so glad I got to try this place out on my last visit to Edmonton. After failing to be able to get a table at their sister restaurant Corso 32 on all of my visits I knew I wanted to try some delicious pasta from Uccellino. I ended up ordering takeout because it was gorgeous out and I still had some work to do but the pasta was just as delicious! I called before heading over and it took about 30 minutes for the order to be ready. The location itself is central on Jasper Ave and the seating is in a long and narrow building, there looked like there was an upstairs area as well. Uccellino offers unpretentious basic Italian comfort food, but the flavour is by no means basic, the pasta is clearly made with great care and the ingredients are fresh and rich making event the simplest of pasta dishes absolutely delightful. I slurped up every last piece of pasta and sopped up all the sauce. Mmmm Mmmm Good! read more

Booked a reservation in their private room for a friend's birthday (6 people). We arrived at the restaurant and they claimed that we had cancelled our reservation. After checking, it turns out that they had sent the reservation confirmation to the incorrect phone number. Alan the manager was completely rude and unapologetic. He basically blamed us for his error. We were not offered any compensation for the error and were told that we would not be able to have the private room that we had booked. I was really taken aback by how rude and unapologetic he was. We were prepared to be spending a fair amount of money celebrating a friends milestone birthday. Will not return to this restaurant or any of the sister restaurants based off this experience. read more

So Uccellino means little bird in Italian, and like a bird, this place is flying to great heights! Ok that was terrible. This place is the truth though. Started with the Potato Croquettes and a cheese plate that's not pictured because it didn't look that tasty, but it was. The cheese plate came with a nice side plate with a smear of honey and maple syrup. Dope. Croquettes were nice and warm with a tasty crust and great parmigiano center. Dope. My Maccheroni which had pig's head, prosciutto ragu bianco and parmigiano. The ragu was soo good and wasn't drowning the pasta and that's a lot of points for me with pasta. The pig's head while It's not the best part of the pig but it's a distinct different flavor and worth a taste. Amanduh had the Spaghettini which had cherry tomatoes, basil and pecorino. She said it tasted buttery, so i take her word for it. Located right next to Bar Bricco and Corso 32 on Jasper it comes with a good assumption that it's the same owner. Although Corso 32 is better of all the 3, Uccellino seems like the place that you go to when you can't get a Corso reso. It's still very very good cuisine with a slick modern and minimalist interior and great service. Definitely going, going, back, back to Uccellino. You might be thinking, "but like I'm not sure"...KAY NO, seriously you are not living life unless you eat this gift to humanity. Also, please try some of their crostini magic. Specifically the guanicelle and ricotta. Those peas are jammin'. And that folks is the magic of Uccellino. The whole place has this chill modern vibe unlike anything else in Edmonton. Uccellino is the latest restaurant to join the Corso 32 family, and has all the great food and culinary touches of Corso 32, without the difficulty of reservations. Uccellino is more casual than Corso 32, with a modern trendy atmosphere. I took my mom here to celebrate her birthday, and while I would have been totally comfortable coming in jeans and a hoodie, it was also fine to dress up a little and celebrate a special occasion. Half the seats are also not held with reservations, which means it is much easier to get a table on short notice. The food is wonderful, full of rich flavors, unique ingredients and carefully assembled plates. We decided to get two pastas and a main to share, and my favorite had to be the pappardelle, with pig's head. Initially seeing "pig's head" scared me off, but honestly it is the most tender pork you can imagine, and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Our main was the lamb with kale salad, and surprisingly, the kale was out of this world good. The lamb was served rare, but was also delicious and tender. Our whole dining experience was pleasant, with attentive, careful service and an extensive wine list. Great new restaurant in Edmonton! read more

This new restaurant had been open for two weeks when I visited on June 8th. It is the third restaurant from the owners of Corso 32, a very popular Northern Italian restaurant in Edmonton. The space is modern with light birch tables, smooth concrete and a combination of daylight and non-directional soft lighting from fixtures placed on a very high ceiling. Of course two weeks is not enough for a new restaurant to work out all the bugs, so-to-speak, but if you consider being greeted immediately upon entering the place as a sign of good customer service, Uccellino's could use some work in this area. I received glances from wait staff and the bar tender however no one approached me for a while to find a table. The staff is nice enough and it's obvious they are getting accustomed to the service that management is dictating. However, to me, being greeted with a smile and a "someone will be right with you", is not reserved for chains and "warmer" restaurants. There is no hostess stand to speak of and that minimalist strategy does work well with the overall theme, however first impressions are exactly that. The bar area is a stand-up bar (i.e. no seats). There was a woman who seemed a little uncomfortable reading a book and noshing on an appetizer while standing. Aside from the light stained tables, the seating seems a bit "cold" with the bench side being smooth concrete, definitely designed to get customers through quicker. Some modern leather pads would have helped with the overall comfort level. The menu is a smallish collection of Northern Italian dishes. Our courses included the Christopher's Moscardini Red Wine Braised Baby Octopus with Char-Grilled Ciabatta. The bread was definitely the star of this dish. As for the rest of it, my tongue was still buzzing from the high sodium content hours after the meal. It was very salted and drowning in a red-wine and olive oil sauce. The baby octopus itself was tender. We followed that with the Spaghetti Bottarga de Muggine which was cooked perfectly al dente but once again very heavy on salt. One of the partners in this business explained that the chef's style was "heavily seasoned" dishes and that they use strong pecorino cheese which has a sharp taste. However, all we kept thinking was, "that was a lot of salt". Any sodium conscious eaters would have a problem with it. When we asked for more char-grilled ciabatta for a little "scarpetta" action, we were brought plain bread with some olive oil which was probably due to the length of time to char the ciabatta. The waitress kept wanting to clear the table when we had dishes with food still in it. We had to keep saying "no, we're not finished", but again I would just chalk that up to the "newness" of the restaurant and perhaps the overall issue of tables for two, being too small for more than a few dishes. We also had the Pollo a Matone which is chicken cooked on a stone. While the result was a very crispy skin, the chicken itself was a bit overcooked and lacked enough moisture. However, the star of that dish and the overall dinner in my mind was the Panzanella Tuscan Bread and Tomato Salad that accompanies the dish. It is superb and I would revisit Uccellino's just for that salad and more char-grilled ciabatta. Overall Uccellino (which is a translation of "Baby Bird or Chick", is a trendy minimalist restaurant that caters to a "hipper" crowd of curious millennials, that serves Northern Italian cuisine that is "heavily seasoned", however that Panzanella Salad comes straight from the South and comforts the palate with the char-grilled ciabatta and just the right amount of seasoning. We didn't get to the "dolci" which looked good based on orders for the table next to us. However, the double espresso was absolutely perfect with a great pour and proper espresso cusps and a great ending to an otherwise questionable meal. read more

Had dinner with my husband at Uccellino after hearing it was part of the Corso 32 family. We were very disappointed. We ordered the Fettunta to start and it was what I would considered overly crispy (aka burnt) on the crust. When I mentioned this to our server that we thought the crust was burnt she informed us that it was meant to be like, 'charred' were her exact words. We ate the inside of the bread but not the crust. For our main meals we ordered the Tagliatelle pasta and the Icelandic Cod to split. The Tagliatelle was superb, so creamy and cheesy, just delicious. I wish we had order multiple orders of this instead of the Icelandic Cod. The Icelandic Cod on the other hand was not a delicious dish. It had no flavor aside from an overly fishy taste and the chickpeas where undercooked. I did not eat any of my fish after the first overly fishy bite and my husband ate his only because he is too polite not too. When our server asked how we liked the fish, I informed her that I couldn't eat it as it was too fishy, she said it was because they add extra fish sauce to the dish. She did not seem to care that I didn't eat any of my fish dinner, didn't ask if I would like something else, just walked away from our table without another word. She returned to ask if we wanted our bill or dessert, we took the bill. There was no adjustment to our bill for my non-eaten meal and again she showed no care that I did not eat my meal. My polite husband didn't want to make a stink, so we paid our bill and left. With no chance we will ever return. I have never been to a restaurant where if someone at the table did not like the dish and didn't eat a drop of it besides their first bite, that something wasn't done. Either taking it off the bill, offering a substitute dish or even buying them one of their drinks. I expect more from such a high caliber restaurant and this is why we won't be coming back to Uccellino again. read more

After having had an amazing 5 star experience at Corso 32 a year or so ago we were dying to check out their latest creation of Uccellino located just west of Bar Bricco on Jasper. The decor is tight, as in on point. Very modern and classy, obviously someone spent a lot of money and a lot of time with this concept. From what I've heard this is kind of the more casual fare, shareable type restaurant as opposed to Corso which is high end Italian or Bricco which is for all intensive purposes an upscale pub with great food. The menu offers shareable plates as well as an entree menu for each individual diner. Let's dig in! So let me say this about Uccelino, if you like cheeses that make the back of your palate pucker up like a Marilyn Monroe poster this the place for you! I have more modest tastes in that area so this place doesn't exactly stripe it down the middle of the fairway for me. That said my fried polenta appetizer with parmesan was actually really tasty. Texturally it was crispy on the outside and unctuous in the middle. The cheese really overpowered me after the 2nd piece but I powered through. My gf had a bruschetta that was piled high with toppings on a goat cheese base. I couldn't bring myself to try it...goat cheese and I don't agree! The main course was spectacular! I had a papardelle with a wild boar ragu. Just out standing. Pasta was perfection, just a touch al dente which I love. The portion was just about right, I was full after. My lady had the tagliatelle which was equally amazing...that I did try. They have an extensive wine list here as you can imagine, but it will always drive me nuts when you can't have a glass of decent wine for less than 17 or 18 bucks. I drink a ton of wine (literally) and the biggest fail for me at this place is the wine pricing. If you drink the grape as much as I (and many others do) people will know your house wines and about what they can buy a bottle for in the outside world. My general rule is in a restaurant 2 glasses should equal about the retail value..(that basically means 1 glass pays the wholesale cost of the bottle) That leaves the establishment about 2-4 glasses of profit depending on the pour per bottle. I paid 18 bucks/glass for a bottle I know I can buy for probably a shade more than 20 bucks at bottle. High end Italian restaurants need to take a more reasonable approach to food/wine pairings without holding people's feet to fire for it in my humble opinion. The best part of my meal on most nights is how I eat and drink a pair that works! It's absurd that restaurants price themselves and more importantly their patrons out of that experience. Anyway, with that rant out of the way, it was a most pleasurable evening with some tastes I surely won't have again anytime soon. Pasta perfect! Service was also very good. Our girl was running up and down the stair all night like a crazy person. The buns of steel serving regime has gotta be a thing at this place...great food, good service, ridiculous wine prices... This is the mean girls of fine establishments. We asked to sit our friends near us and the pregnant hostess refused. Our server Avery tried as well and declined as the plan was already set for the restaurant. I guess we will never bring our friends from out of town here again. We booked a birthday dinner in the private room. We were all very excited to try this restaurant. The disappointment started though from the moment we walked in. The host watched me struggle through the doors with balloons in my hand and didn't even open the door for me. One guy did help me once I entered both doors. The server seemed off right away. We had some questions about the menu and it seemed to be of annoyance to her. She came around fairly often at first but was never overly pleasant. When we called ahead of time to book the room they never informed us of the $10 per person playing fee for the cake we brought. So when we walked in we were shocked. Had we known we would have just got dessert there instead. Once we brought this up to them our server seemed to have enough of us and we barely seen her after that. We asked to talk to a manager........ this did not ease the feeling we were not welcome there. He basically stated we were lying about not knowing the $10 plating fee. He told us things were busy that night and there was no apologies for the below par service. The salad I ordered was fabulous, but the main pasta dish just tasted like beets and butter no flavour at all. I understand big groups are hard to serve but I don't think we were being difficult. We did take a long time to order but that was no excuse for the way they made us feel. It was truly one of the oddest experiences I've had at a restaurant. read more

Can't say enough good things about Uccellino. Bar Bricco has always been our favorite spot to go since it doesn't require reservations (unlike Corso 32) and has a really cool atmosphere that we love! It took a couple visits to Uccellino to appreciate its differences from Bar Bricco, but all three of Costa's restaurants have something uniquely special that keep us coming back to each one, depending on how we feel and the purpose of our visit. Uccellino, Bar Bricco, and Corso 32 all feature great food and drinks, but I have a few favorites at Uccellino that I can't get at the other two. The Anchovy & Butter Crostini would not have been my first choice had my Italian fiancé not expressed interested, but it is now one of my favorite things to eat in Edmonton! The saltiness of the anchovies with the rich, thick butter, and a slight hint of heat and lemon creates the most balanced, delicious flavor bomb in your mouth that I can't get enough of. The only unfortunate thing is that I can't get myself to try anything else when we go in there! The Beef Carpaccio was lighter, but tasty, and followed nicely after the decadent crostini. I've heard that the Olive Oil Cake & Olive Oil Gelato is a must-try but I'm a sucker for chocolate. I expressed my reservations to our server about the Chocolate Budino comparing it to Corso's Hazelnut Torta, but he reassured me that the Budino was worth a try, and that I might actually like it better. I just don't understand it, but Costa just keeps getting better and better with each new culinary creation! He continues to outdo himself, taking my favorites, and then heightening them to new levels. The Chocolate Budino was just perfection. I liked that it wasn't quite as rich as the Torta, and it the gooey chocolatey centre... ahh... I can't wait to go back! read more

Uccellino is one of my favourite places for Italian! In my opinion Italian cuisine is one of those often watered down, bland, and not done well, but Uccellino does a stellar job of delivering an amazing meal and dining experience. The meal always starts with a small bowl of a variety of olives! I normally am not a fan of olives so when I say I enjoyed the olives, it says a lot! My husband and I shared the Panzanella salad, which I throughly enjoyed. All the vegetables were super fresh and had the perfect crunch, and the bread had just the right balance of being a little bit chewy from soaking up the olive oil. I had the Papardelle with Pig's Head, proscuitto and parmigiano and it was perfect! Super creamy, and not overly heavy or salty. Uccellino makes their pasta in house, so pasta is definitely something not to be missed ordering! My husband ordered the chicken cooked under a brick. It does take 30 minutes or so to prepare and our server did forewarn us about that, which was appreciated. We weren't in a rush that evening so it was no big deal, but still a nice touch to be told in advance in case we were. The chicken was definitely worth the wait -- the skin was perfectly crisp, and the inside was incredibly juicy and tender. We only ordered a half portion, as the full portion is quite large and probably meant to be shared in a large group! Unfortunately, after our appetizer and mains, we were so full that we didn't quite make it to dessert, so another visit, is definitely due! read more

Entertained a group of 12 coworkers at Uccellino. Found the process of planning to be very frustrating. For large groups the management requests preselections from a limited menu. Requested that we choose a single pasta and a single secondi for the entire table. With varying likes and dietary limitations this would have pushed us to the most basic pasta and chicken for our main. After much discussion the manager compromised to allow for two pastas and two mains. Despite being a "family style" restaurant management insisted that we have our fish dish plated individually. We were pleased with chefs selection of three appetizers. The highlight for me was the chicken liver and balsamico crostini. However portions were enormous rendering most people full before the pasta course. Our pasta course was delicious. The tagliatelle with parmigiana had a beautiful richness to its sauce that resembled molten egg yolks. Portion size again baffled me. We received eight dinner size portions for the group to share. By the time the sea bass and chicken were served we could barely muster the room to try it. Overall the food was very good but a few changes need to be considered to improve the large group experience. I imagine that ordering ala carte would be a completely different experience. read more

The service here is great! Our server knew a lot about the wine list and was very helpful in our choosing. I ordered the sparkling Lambrusco wine (I was celebrating an early birthday)- first sparkling red wine and I was not disappointed!! To start, a friend and I split the fried chickpea polenta- nice and crispy on the outside but light on the inside. A friend ordered the pumpkin ricotta crostini and it was the perfect balance of sweet and salty. I was expecting pumpkin purée but they were actually chunks of pumpkin. For my entree I ordered the parpadelle. Good portion and great salty flavor. The texture of the pasta was light and delicate, not like a boxed pasta. For dessert, I had the chocolate budino - a rich thin chocolate cake with a side of whipped cream. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The chocolate flavor was very strong and rich but the whipped cream cuts the richness. My group of friends had an incredible experience here! Would highly recommend. read more

Excellent service. Ordered beef carpaccio, parpadelle, chicken with panzanella salad, brocollini, and olive oil ice-cream and olive oil cake. Everything was delicious. The skin on the chicken was a bit salty but the meat was tender and juicy. I usually don't enjoy many Italian restaurants because I feel like I can make the food a lot better at home. Can't say enough about this place. We called at the last minute on the Sunday evening of a long weekend looking for a table for 10. They took us in and sat us in their private dining room. We did the chef's tasting menu. They did not miss a beat with us. Extremely attentive, impeccable service every second of our time there. Very reasonable prices for the quality of food served. The dishes were pure perfection - fresh, delicious ingredients beautifully prepared and the private room was the perfect atmosphere for our group. They even accommodated our two gluten-free guests (one is celiac) without hesitation. Everyone of us is still raving today about how outstanding everything was. It's hard to please a group this size with everyone's unique needs and dietary restrictions. We appreciated it so much - thank you!
