The gentleman who served us was attentive, knowledgeable and well. . . . he should be, turns out he's the owner! He busses his own tables, serves his customers and is all around a very amazing person. Try the Mushroom Soup - it's to die for, NOT KIDDING! You can try the white or rye bread with a red peppered flavored, whipped butter. So good :) Hubby had Free Range Pesto Chicken Breast over Linguini, while I had the Free Range Breaded Chicken a la Rousse (Stuffed with Salmon, white wine dill cream sauce) - - - save your pennies and just do it, visit here. To top off hubby's birthday we had the Sticky Date Pudding "served warm with ice cream, whipped cream & topped with hot caramel sauce" as per the menu, but it does not do it justice (picture included) I had the Terrine of Sorbets "layered black cherry, lemon, mango, served with champagne" - they actually pour the champagne over the sorbet, deeee-lish! Expensive. Great service. Well cooked food with fabulous sauces. great variety of specialty items and game. And I always look forward to november for game month specials. Free parking in the back. I love their pate dishes. The foie gras and goose liver are to die for. Yum.i could eat this all day everyday. The fruit preserves are always complementing the dish perfectly. The venison, steak, lamb, veal, and duck are always tender and flavourful. Some of these dishes are only daily specials so ask your server. The desserts are great too. I personally prefer the apple crisp. The chocolate mousse and creme caramel are a bit underwhelming but the crisp is very very good. Normand's looks small on the outside, but come inside and treat yourself to a delicious steak, or even the game dishes available on the menu! My husband and I were out celebrating our anniversary and decided to give this place a try. Service started out a bit slow; there were only 3-4 other groups inside, but it felt like it took a while to have our orders taken. Finally, a server arrived with glasses of water for us, and we had decided what to order. We ended up sharing the Frog Legs Provencal appetizer, and I ordered the filet mignon while my husband ordered the roast duck. To start, the frog legs were great. This was our first time trying frog, and we enjoyed it! They were well seasoned and very tender. If you haven't had frog legs, they taste very much like chicken but have a fish-like consistency. Be careful because the bones are tiny! The filet mignon was great. It has a peppercorn sauce on it that gave a great flavor, and the steak itself was cooked nicely. I was half expecting this to be served a la carte, but was pleasantly surprised to see a few veggies and some kind of yummy dcalloped potato type of thing on the plate. My husband enjoyed his duck, too. It was seasoned well, and the real winner on the plate was the berry sauce! I think they may have been Saskatoon berries. Not positive, but the sweet and savory thing works SO well here! I even tasted some of the duck's sauce with my steak...heaven! We ended up chatting briefly with a man who I believe to be the owner. We mentioned that we are visiting from the states and are celebrating our anniversary and honeymoon (5 years together, 3 months married), and are generally sight-seeing. We mentioned some locations we are visiting. He and the server were helpful in getting our food boxed up and bringing the dessert menu. I really wanted to try the bananas flambe, but before I could order, we were surprised when our server brought out a complementary slice of raspberry chocolate cake on a plate that had "happy anniversary" piped in chocolate. So nice of them, and so delicious! The owner took a picture of us together, and returned to the table with a print out of the picture. Before we left, we talked to the owner again. I mentioned that I have heard their kangaroo is really good, and he mentioned that the next day they would actually have it! Other game they offer includes wild board, bison, and elk. Food was a 7 out of 10. Service was good but the atmosphere is a 5 out of 10. They don't have muck of an ambiance. Tables are plane and not set for a fine French Resturaunt. They had a bleach container and white rag set on a table feet in front of us. When we asked that they please move it Normand himself said that's how it's staying. They charge like a fine French Resturaunt but they don't give the experience of one. In todays age with the great Resturaunts we have. There are much better places to spend your money. read more

We were the only occupied table when it was late afternoon and we had the table by the window and could see out to Jasper Avenue. There are numerous drink menus, so lots to choose from to suit everyone's tastes. They had menus for Martinis, mules, wines, and more. I ordered a mule and it was good and what I needed to end the workday! The food menu also has a good selection of seafood, meat, and salads too! Before our meals arrived, they brought out bread slices. I ordered the Mediterranean salad with the addition of 3 jumbo shrimp for an extra $8. They had a dinner sized salad but I found the regular sized was good along with the shrimp. The jumbo shrimp were jumbo and the star of the dish. The salad was decent but more red onions than my liking. If I had more of an appetite, I would have ordered one of their specials with fish, jumbo shrimp, and vegetables. One of my table mates ordered that and it looked very good. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals and drinks. There's a great dessert selection too. I had the crisp which came with a variety of berries and fruit, whipped cream, and a scoop of ice cream. The dessert size was larger than I thought, and enough to share after a dinner. I couldn't finish all my dessert but I liked it with all the fruit. This is a late review but nonetheless, I came here with a fellow yelper back in the fall. We both had our older babies with us and we came for brunch. I've come here several times in the last 15 years or so for dinner and remember really enjoying the experience. I always frequented Glenora Bistro several times for brunch prior to them shutting down and moving brunch services here. My last experience though was disappointing - mainly due to poor service - not sure if this is because my friend and I both had babies with us? The waiters did accomodate our need for two high chairs - but they were old and awkward and hard to figure out how to put the trays on. There was no exuded friendliness and instead, I felt like our kids became a big nuisance for the staff instead. The restaurant was NOT busy - with only three tables occupied, including us. Most of the time the two servers were busy standing on the top level chatting while keeping an eye out on the rest of the restaurant. The food was satisfactory - but not sure I would rush to go back again due to poor service. read more

Met with 2 people to remember a mutual friend who used to live in Oliver and loved this restaurant. I am from out of town and it was Kdays and rush hour and I do not know Edmonton. Went down the alley and low and behold a guy in a fluorescent vest took charge and told me where I could park my truck in the parking lot. I was impressed! We ordered from the fresh sheet a saffron seafood & rice dish & my girlfriend ordered their veal liver. The portion was very generous so we could hv easily shared a plate. Several years ago, Allan G. was annoyed that after a good Valentine's dinner here, a haughty maitre d' kept trying to shoo us out of Normand's after our meal. We were merely waiting in the front vestibule after dinner for the cab we'd called (because it was FREEZING outside). And my husband knows how to hold a grudge. It isn't often I can convince him to try something again after a place has disappointed him, but I managed to this morning. We wanted to try something different for brunch, and we usually rule out the 10-11 openers as we're early risers. Normand's had decent options online, and they open at 8. I asked him if he'd be willing to try them again. He said yes, but with his usual reservations about the place. We were first in the door, with pleasant soft Frank Sinatra Christmas music playing (so nice, after the usual over-loud auto-tune crap at so many other spots). Al ordered the Canadian omelet (with back bacon, cheddar, and mushrooms) and a separate grilled bratwurst alongside, and I had the lox benny with fruit cup. Al was very happy with his omelet, and the bratwurst had a tasty Dijonnaise type sauce that was quite tasty. Both came with fried potatoes. The salmon on my benny was fantastic, and the hollandaise was delicious. Our waiter was great, kept the coffee cups refilled (REALLY good coffee too), and he got me a fruit cup with no melon, which was appreciated. I thanked him for doing a great job, as Al has had a complete attitude adjustment about the place. Looking forward to returning again soon! read more

This place is consistently awesome for breakfast. I have not tried their supper menu, but I would like to do so one day. Their breakfast menu is more in my price range. I always get the lox eggs benny. It comes with tasty hash browns, and fruit salad (which is topped with vanilla yogurt, honey, and lime juice - it rules). The bartendery hotel mentioned this place because he overheard me saying how much I love wild game. In Oct/Nov, they have a special wild game menu. I was able to try camel, kangaroo, and ostrich and pasted it with an amazing red varietal from Australia I'd never had before. The menu was so interesting I would have trouble picking on a normal day. The atmosphere and the staff were fantastic; just the right balance between homey and upscale. It's funny; I walk past Normand's all the time and never thought anything of it. Especially on the outside, the appearance is fairly plain and unassuming. HOWEVER, Normand's served me and my family one of the best meals we've ever had. Their menu is absolutely spectacular and on par (or better) than many of the newer fancy restaurants that get more buzz. I mean, there's a reason they've been around over 40 years! The service was incredible; the waiter was attentive, helpful, and personable. And the owner came by the table several times throughout the meal to make sure everything was satisfactory. The food though... the food. Oh my goodness! I had some of the best fish of my life (the daily market special), and I tried some of the others' meals, including kangaroo (another special... which I had never had and it was freakin' incredible. I would have never thought I'd like it) and the pheasant (which is on their menu regularly and was also incredible and I want to go back to order it). The prices are on the higher end, sure, but this really is a 5 star restaurant that warrants it. If anything, I thought everything was incredibly reasonable for the quality of food and service you're getting. Seriously, I cannot wait to go back and have the 2nd best meal of my life. read more

What an experience! High quality upscale French style cuisine at reasonable prices. Try their freshly squeezed orange juice, they squeeze the fruit literally right after you order it (hard to find)! I got the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel. Comes with capers and onions on the sandwich. I'd give it a 9/10 no complaints. Comes with fantastic pan fried potatoes and a bowl of fresh fruit. Brunch: this restaurant has the best eggs benedict in the downtown area bar none. Normand's is basically right outside my door, but I just went here for the first time last night for a belated birthday celebration. We started off with dried musk ox and the wild game goulash. The goulash was decent, but nothing spectacular. The musk ox was delicious, and I thought the portion was surprisingly large for the price. We made a point of going during November for their wild game month, and I ordered the bison and elk. The bison was nice, but the elk was just... wow. I think I will dream about it forever. Normand's is a family favorite - we go here roughly once a year or so. The food is by no means cheap, and sometimes I feel like I should be getting a little more (in terms of portion size) for my buck, but the food is great, and that's really why people come back. Like many fellow reviewers have noted, Normand's does a lot of traditional French fare, but they have a few more gamey meats - often as their meat special. Everything I've had tastes great, but the sides are on the plain side. I've thought about it, and I believe this to be intentional - the food I ate in France was much the same. Really, the meal you order centers around the meat and the sauce, and everything else is to provide simple variations on that taste. I quite enjoyed their escargot variation - instead of the more common garlic heavy sauce, they instead did more of a tomato mix with mushroom caps. And for the biggest bang for your buck, the duck dish (only one if I recall) offers more than most. I do have a few gripes. One, service tends to be a little on the slow side. If you're starving, keep this in mind. Also, while one should salivate at the thought of french desserts, I found the dessert menu to be rather bland. The pear sounded really nice, but everything else seemed rather standard-fare. Perhaps this is because they offer more on the dessert drink side of things, and expect patrons to go with that instead. Being downtown, parking can be a bit of a pain as well depending on when you arrive. Final verdict is that it's a wonderful restaurant to go to for those looking for a more upscale, romantic experience. read more

I first went here years ago, and since then I've been back many times. While it is fairly expensive, I've always thoroughly enjoyed my meal - it's worth every penny. Normand's serves a fair amount of local meat, but what really sets it apart are the more unusual meats, such as elk, bison, muskox, ostrich, etc. If you have visitors, this would certainly be a good place to take them for dinner - they'll be excited to try something new, or just to have some Alberta beef. If you're looking for a lighter meal, they do have some pastas etc that I'm sure would be great as well, but I can't say I've ever ordered one - the rest of their menu is just too appealing. So....I have going to this restaurant for 25 years. I would not frequent a place for 25 years unless it is special. Normand's is special. Every time I go there the service is fantastic. The servers are pros. They are not bothersome but somehow they know when you need them. Normand always comes to say hello. What a warm and welcoming place. I totally recommend their potatoes au gratin and the wild game special. A bit expensive but soooooo worth it for $45. Normand's is the type of "fancy" restaurant you can find in just about any mid-sized city: sort-of French, hasn't changed the decor or the menu since Wang Chung ruled the airwaves, but possessing a loyal clientele that finds it comfortable and unthreatening. I don't know what Normand's was serving when it started back in 1989, but today it's firmly on the Locavore bandwagon, focusing on Alberta beef, game meats and fish, and showcasing BC wines. Which is what caught the attention of my group of visiting colleagues. For me, dinner started with a fair-sized portion of air-dried musk ox drizzled with truffle oil. Not bad - texture like roast beef and taste closer to prosciutto - but a really salty prosciutto. The salt was disappointingly overwhelming. For my main, I had the Alberta pickerel. Nice piece of very fresh fish, dipped in some bread crumbs and pan-fried. Totally OK, but not much imagination, and nothing an average cook couldn't do at home. Others in our group had steak, lamb or the game duo special (elk and bison), and mostly enjoyed them. OK, this place can handle meat at a reasonably professional level. But every dish was accompanied by the same flavourless steamed vegetables and equally bland scalloped potatoes. A couple of us subsituted fries for the scalloped potatoes, and those weren't much better. Surely a French restaurant should be able to do a decent steak frites. Wine: I asked the server to recommend a wine from their fairly decent selection available by the glass. He had no idea how to answer my question (Him: "What kind of wine do you like?" Me: "A wine that pairs well with the fish.") But did bring me a sample of a very nice BC sauvignon blanc to try. Overall: it's time for these guys to retire. read more

From the rustic, intimate feel of the restaurant to the excellent dishes, most of which use local Alberta produce, this is an excellent traditional restaurant in a town filled with Earl's and other "chain" type restaurants. The service is outstanding - the staff & Normand are always polite, extremely professional - we have never felt rushed. The quality of the meal is much higher then other chain restaurants within the same price range. Their wine selection is great & is at a reasonable price. In addition to celebrating our own special events at Normand's we have set up dinners there for gifts (ex. birthdays, anniversaries) - always receiving rave reviews! Making a wedding during a pandemic can be challenging and frustrating. When I wanted to host a wedding dinner, Normand's made it easy. His suggestion of Kir Royale for a pre dinner drink was spot on, as was his suggestions for the appetizers as well. He even made mocktails for the youngsters and they were thrilled. After that, everyone ordered an entree from the menu. Normand and his staff handled 29 orders with military precision. The food, as always, was spectacular and the service was stellar. We introduced a few people to wild game for the first time and they were pleasantly surprised as to how tasty it was. I was also pleasantly surprised when the bill came as well. It was a lot less than I expected, even with the drinks! This is why he has been in business for over 30 years. You can always count on me for repeat business and after tonight, you have gained a lot more customers. Thank you to Normand and his staff for making this a memorable evening.
