I'm surprised I'd never been to the Cask & Barrel before this week. It is a great place to grab an after work drink and a bite to eat. Service is friendly and fast and the space is lively without being overwhelming. Their food menu isn't the best if you have dietary limitations but there are still a couple vegetarian and gluten-friendly options. I had their caprese salad which was served deconstructed with microgreens and 2 different types of tomatoes. You can never go wrong with bocconcini cheese! As for drinks, they have some great happy hour specials and the house red wine was surprisingly drinkable. They also have an extensive cocktail list with their twists on the classics and a formidable whisky collection. read more

Embarrassed that it took me so long to get back into this place! Allan G and I came once a few years ago to meet a friend for drinks, but I hadn't done much hanging out since. Went last Saturday to catch a friend's band play, and I'm so happy I did! It was a gorgeous day-- perfect for a patio sit, and lots of folks were all there for the same purpose, so it was super relaxed and chill. Our server, Mandy, was unrufflable and funny. The perfect server. The manager, David, is really great. Friendly and super welcoming, considering I'd only been once before. I noticed that he was attempting to change out the sandwich board for the band, so asked if I could help (ex art major, with a lot of typography experience). He was happy to let me. So that was fun. :) I had a couple beers and the Italian sausage flatbread pizza. OMG! SO good! And the prices were perfectly respectable. My first time here I arrived with one thing in mind. Finding a place that was serving Strathcona gin. They did not have any, however upon the recommendation of my gin enthusiast friend I tried Tanqueray 10. I was delightfully surprised at how delicious it was in a tall glass with tonic. This is a elegant place to have a few starters and drinks. We sat in a little nook with a window behind me. The staff was attentive and polite. It was an excellent place to grab a drink after work with a bud. The hummus was sweeter then I've had before and topped with green onions. On a hot summer evening after work, there's something to be said about meeting a friend and sitting on a patio drinking a beverage (even water) and eating snacks. I did this recently at The Cask & Barrel and the snacks (the spicy and the savoury) were definitely delightful. Whisky galore! This place has a super home-y feeling with big furniture squeezed into the small space and a glow of candles placed in tumblers scattered on each table. The windows are lined with box seats to make booths that are very cozy. The ambience is dark by candle light and makes for a great date destination. The location is ideal (right off Jasper Ave), it has a good whisky selection, indie music and a cool crowd. Perfect late night drink stop. read more

Wow! This place is a real gem. Service is excellent and the servers are very personable and knowledgeable. The atmosphere inside is cozy and comfy, great for a gathering with friends or a date. TVs are there but not intrusive to the coziness. The food is amazing! Small menu but such an amazing and fresh selection. The goat cheese appetizer is amazing. The souvlaki platter was wonderful as were the paninis and salad. Meals are $15-20. Small tap beer selection of 8 taps but a good variety. Lots of wines and other alcohol types to choose from. I've probably walked by this place a few times and never noticed it! When a friend suggested we go for lunch, I was up to try a new place. We went in and there were 2 tables occupied for a total of 6 others in the restaurant. It was much smaller inside than I thought but we got a table away from the door and the wind. The waitress dropped off menus and when she came to get our drink order, she informed us there were issue with the water and the washroom wasn't available. Good thing we were there for a quick lunch and we could limit our liquid intake. The food is on about page 10 of the menu and it covers 4 pages, so most people come to drink and not eat. There are items to share, a page of paninis all for $10 each, and entrees but I think some were available only in the evening. I decided on a panini but didn't want the cheese. I was told they are premade so they couldn't remove the cheese but there was one panini that had less cheese that the others. I ordered the chicken one with the tomato basil soup. The soup was very good and I enjoyed it more than the sandwich. The sandwich was good with chicken and peppers and it was a decent size too. Although it was premade, the food tasted better than I thought it would. I'm giving it 3 stars based on the lack of variety for lunch items but the food was decent and the price was good. After the Deadmonton Haunted House we needed to calm our nerves. Around the corner from the Paramount theatre, this little lounge was a great place to chill out. We had a reservation for our group of 18 and they setup a section of couches and part of the bar for our party. The Great... Our server was awesome! She was friendly and attentive. Everything came quickly and she handled the large group well. The atmosphere was relaxed but trendy. The lounge has a warm, almost rustic feel. The bar selection was good. Wine, beer, scotch, cocktails. Whatever your drink of choice. The Average... Our food was just okay. The flavours fell a little flat. We ordered the Cask Club Panini with Garlic Roasted Potatoes and The Lotus (a chicken coconut curry). Both lacked taste and the chicken had a rubbery texture. Cask & Barrel has become my go to place after work on a Thursday or Friday. It's a cozy little place that offers wine, beer and spirits as well as a decent food menu. I typically order their Yellowhead on tap because it is on special during happy hour or a gin and soda. They have many other beers to choose from and other spirits. If you are going to sample something off the food menu, I would try the Smokey Hummus with Naan. The naan is so tasty and warm and pairs very nicely with smokey hummus. It is a great dish to share but can easily be a meal all on it's own. The decor is eclectic ranging from modern tables and chairs to more retro to comfy little couches. The patio is decent although it lacks in space to move in and out as it only contains one long row of tables and chairs along a bench. It is a good place to people watch on a hot summers day. The staff are friendly and make me and my friends feel at home. Typically service is prompt but I have had a few experiences where it wasn't. This is a tricky one... Aesthetically this little scotch bar is adorable! I love the patio; I love the interior, like something imported from SOHO or the Meat Packing District of NYC. Including the fact that you have to walk down a creepy hallway to get to the loo (do not like that part, at all!) Then there is the menu... It's all a bit lacking: Good, not great wines, I won't touch on the Scotch (I'll leave that to my cuz Joshua M). The food menu leaves a little to be desired (why no charcuterie, no cheese plate, no fun sharesies??). Oh well, on the bright side that just means there is room for improvement. Now, here's where things really took a sucky and quite embarrassing turn.... I had invited a gal pal out to talk shop, at the end of the ok night (we learned that when you need another round you must flag down the wait staff... ya!) I went to pay and realized I did not have my debit card on me. I figured 2 AMEX's and a MasterCard should be fine. Nope! They don't take AMEX and the debit machine did not "support" my MC. So close, Cask and Barrel. So close. This bar is hip. It feels more San Francisco than Edmonton, by a lot. Exposed wood panelling (it's the new exposed brick, didn't you know?), split level, low lighting, solid beer list, a cool layout, excellent bartender. I really felt transported. It reminded me a bit of Red Star, but without the distracting windows and intimidating hipster vibe. And then I started paying attention to the music. Adele. The Ting Tings. Top 40. More Top 40. I was surprised not to hear LMFAO by the end of the night. Cask and Barrel, you are so close to being really cool. The Cask & Barrel is close to my office, and makes a great stop for happy hour beverages. The atmosphere is great. I love what these guys have done with their space. It's fun and hip and cozy, with lots of comfortable cushions and throws to make guests feel at home. Their music selection is usually solid, too. Service can be spotty. I've had some really great experiences and pleasant servers, but I've also had a few sour servers that failed to deliver or were inattentive. Little details that are fulfilled happily elsewhere (ex. change for a meter that could then be added to the bill later) are typically not provided. Food is limited here (my understanding is that C&B doesn't have a full kitchen), but what I've ordered I enjoy. Their hummus/pita plate is good, and the soup of the day usually delicious. Their take on macaroni and cheese, and their sandwiches fell flat. Usually, I plan on having drinks at The Cask & Barrel, and go elsewhere for food. First impression: the decor and space is nice. From that you'd expect a good menu and drink selection. However, didn't end up staying around after reviewing the menu. A couple of the people in the group were interested in wine. However, we couldn't believe the wines on the list. I mean, where would you see extremely low end wines such as Copper Moon, Gallo, and Barefoot on a menu all in one place? I think perhaps you could get Gallo if you were at Denny's having a Grand Slam. What were these guys thinking? Perhaps the current wine list was a ploy to divert the wine drinkers to drink scotch or beer? Obviously they felt self conscious about the wine list given the disclaimer at the top of the page proclaiming that the wine list "would change soon". Why wouldn't they just start with something reasonable to begin with and improve as they go. Maybe the wine list is meant to be "bottom of the barrel" - rounding out their name! Some old colleagues and I met at The Cask to catch up, compare jobs, discuss old grudges and basically talk about the things middle aged adults feel compelled to share with one another. It was my first time at The Cask (yes I'm too lazy to type its entire name), and I was rather excited. I envisioned a cozy hub where people come to gather over a deep mahogany bar and sip only the finest of scotches. I could only hope Ron Burgundy would be sitting on the end seat, talking about how Baxter taught him to roll over. Well, Ron wasn't there, and the room wasn't covered in large amounts of red wood. But it was cozy and there was booze, so I was happy. Our server greeted us quickly and took our drink orders. They had a few beer specials that night, but the fancy in me wanted to guzzle a fine glass of Malbec through a straw. When our drinks were dropped off, our server didn't seem too happy that we didn't have our food orders ready. But that's what happens when friends gather after months of seeing one another. And my wine was acting as an appy, so I wasn't in a hurry. We sorted our food desires and placed our order to another lady...the host or owner or maybe another server. Don't get me wrong: Our server was still there, so we weren't sure what was going on. It was slow, so maybe they both wanted something to do. Either way, she was lovely, and we were getting half cut. It was going well. My friend and I shared some sliders and a dip made of artichoke hearts, spinach and cheeses that satisfied every part of my body that wants to get pudgy. The sliders were a wee bit well...wee. When it came time to close up our mouths and our bills, our server was nowhere in sight. We scanned the room, but all we saw was another table and two ladies chatting at the bar. We casually carried on for about 15 minutes more before realizing the two ladies at the bar talking the entire time were our servers. Alas! We'd found them! We high-fived each other for our sharp investigative skills, then waited another five minutes before shuffling our stuff around to see if it would raise an eyebrow, head or any body part from either of them. It worked! We were on a roll! We paid our bills, quietly wished them happy conversations and exited to our next destination. What's the moral of this story, you "Cask"? Sipping wine through a straw is awesome. The Dip is divine. And servers should always serve first before dishing out the gossip, bar-side. read more

The Cask and Barrel is a cool place, but it has the potential to be a really cool place and falls a touch short. Our waitress was great. i think she was the only one there on Thursday night and she handled it like a pro. Really friendly and chill. Me and my dates started our night outside, which was pretty bland. It was like I was sitting on a sidewalk on some random side road in a totally dead city... oh wait. We moved inside and the atmosphere was a lot better. The decor is great - beautiful walls and, actually, beautiful floors - but the loud music was a bit much for a week night. The beer list was pretty good, but I can't quite understand why the prices were so high. $8.50 for a pint of Strongbow is higher than anywhere else I've seen it (usually $7.50ish), the cheapest bottles were $6.50 - and I"m talking for Kokanee and the like - and it went up from there. Oh, they did have Lucky for $4.75, ha. I suppose high price is all relative, but their prices are clearly higher than pretty much every other bar. I really liked the vibe and staff at Cask and Barrel, but I think they should lower their prices if they want to be competitive at all. They have a lot of potential. There's just really no reason to go there when you can head down the street and get the same beer for a lower price. read more

Some girlfriends and I went for after-work drinks to The Cask and Barrel last night and it made quite the first impression. The decor was super cute and comfortable, the staff were friendly and engaging - the owner stopped by our table a few times to ask how everything was and even introduced us to the chef! We enjoyed the highball special and the Spinach Dip was really tasty! We didn't find the music to be too loud - so it seems they have remedied that issue. The one thing I can see as being more problematic is only having a one-stall washroom for each the men and women. At least it was very clean! Other than that, the venue had a great feel and we will definitely be back! UPDATE The service is terrible - I have been back numerous times, hoping that the waitress was just having an off night, but no - the mediocre service (at best) seems to be as good as it gets. They offered us a food menu and then wouldn't take our food order, she grabbed our drink glasses while there was still precious mouthfuls to be had, and every time we needed something, we had to flag her down to ask. it felt like our business didn't matter. The food isn't really that great either. This place is ok to go to for drinks and the decor is super cute, so I likely will go again, but not to spend hours there. Cask and Barrel disappoint on their name sake. Went for drinks with some friends and had a hankering for some scotch. From their name I supposed that is was something they would do well. Unfortunately our server didn't seem to know much of anything about scotch. I ordered it on the rocks and when I ended up getting my drink (which took way longer than it should have considering there were only 3 tables in the whole place) it had crushed ice in it. For anyone who actually drinks scotch you would know that crushed ice melts far too quickly and waters down the scotch. Also in no universe do rocks equate to crushed ice. My friends' dirty martini also had crushed ice in it. Which is equally ridiculous. Maybe it was just a new server needing a little education or maybe it was a bad night. But the whole experience was so disappointing that I don't think any of us will be back. read more

After walking by this location everyday on my way to work and witnessing its renovation maturation from studs and mortar to furnished finishings, a group of us decided this past Saturday to go see how it all turned out. The décor is pretty cool with an industrial-chic feel. I was a big fan of the juxtaposition between the steel & concrete and the untreated & natural woods that accented much of the space. Service was prompt and friendly but the food menu wasn't all that comprehensive; although the panini's and soups that were available seemed very reasonably priced. Beer selection was pretty decent with a number of local picks on hand as well (tap selection pretty minimal though). And for the particular Saturday evening while we there (8-10pm'ish), the place was surprisingly bumpin' for how new and unheard of Cask & Barrel has been. This establishment is definitely more "lounge'y" than anything else and accompanied by the most random mix of music I have heard at a...anywhere?? From David Gray, Damien Marley, Dire Straits to Feist - it seemed like whomever's playlist that was docked was simply left on shuffle. Either way, I'd highly recommend this place as a pretty chill spot for a solid hangout with your crew or a fantastic place to start if you're planning on bouncing to da club later in the night. And even despite the music randomness this place is definitely, as the kids say, kickin it cray. read more

Cask and Barrel is a great place to stop for drinks on the patio after a long day at work. The patio is small, but that's what makes it nice- it's an intimate setting where you can hear what your friends are saying, while watching passersby on the street. Although the service is a little slow, the menu has a nice selection of drinks including several happy hour or daily specials. We've tried the food here before, it's nothing fancy, with no frills. The food was tasty, but probably not filling enough to count as dinner. I'm not sure how I'd like this restaurant in the winter time, as it's quite small inside. However, in the summer it's great. There aren't a lot of patios in the downtown core, and this one fits the bill! read more

I found this place as a result of seeing some of my friends checking-in to it via foursquare, so I was quite intrigued on what this place this place was about. My friend and I greatly enjoyed the fact they have Innis and Gunn on-tap! Our server was Excellent, extremely helpful and genuine! What a lovely place to stop in on a rainy Saturday after the farmer's market! To be honest I hadn't noticed Cask and Barrel before, even though I live downtown. I'm so glad that a friends suggested we warm up and have lunch here. The decor is a bit gloomy, but in the best way. The floor is painted in a floral motif, the furniture is heavy and comfy, the bar is perfectly placed in the middle to make the seating more private, and there is a cute patio off the front to boot. Our server was very friendly and relaxed, and made comments on our "good choices" when we ordered. I ordered the shepherd's pie with tomato and basil soup on the side. I accompanied my meal with a grapefruit cider, which was just delicious. I am a sucker for shepherd's pie, whenever I find it on a menu I have to order it. I know I could make it at home, but it's one of those dishes that is just too labour intensive for me to invest in, so I always order it when I can. Man was I happy I did! This is now my go to place to order this dish whenever I have a craving for it. The soup was also divine, I ate ever ounce of it. The only disappointment... the bathroom. You walk down a stark hallway at the back that's lit with horrible fluorescent lighting, and the bathrooms are very officey. It seems that they share the bathrooms with other occupants of the building, that's the only conclusion I can make for the stark differences in decor between the restaurant and bathrooms. There was live music for the second half of our meal, which was nice, but it was a bit too loud. Our server did ask that the performer turn down the volume after the second song, so I'm not going to make this a complaint. However, if I find this happens again, I may have to complain. My eardrums are sensitive little gals, and I'd like to keep in good working order for my old age. I was very happy with my experience at Cask and Barrel, and have already planned another outing there with friends later this week. read more

Ok, I don't know if the service we received was typical, but we had really bad experience. I think there was too many people for the waitress to take on in the restaurant, which created delays. Our party of 8 kept reordering as the waitress would acknowledge what we were asking for, then forget the moment she walked away. It was painful to ask for the bill more than once at the end, or to order our drinks more than once. An all-around "alright" place. The decor is nice and there is a lounge section with couches, which is great but they are usually occupied. There is a patio which is awesome in the summer; it's located just south of all the traffic and noise on Jasper so it's part of the action but still with some reasonable distance. Very pleasant. I'm normally a beer drinker and Cask & Barrel satisfies there, but I must admit they have some delicious cocktails. My group of friends tried the "Follow Amanda" because they claimed it tasted like red skittle and we were cynics who wanted to dispute that (to each other, not rudely to the staff there) but it was absolutely spot on. The music they play is varied but consistently great...I hate using the term "indie" as a genre, but that pretty much describes it...Grandaddy, Arcade Fire, Peter Bjorn and John, and so on. They nailed the volume; you can sit back and enjoy it if you're digging what's playing but you can still have a decent conversation if you want without having to raise your voice. The downsides... Service is inconsistent. I really don't want to slag off their staff as I've gotten some great service there, but other times I've felt totally invisible there...and it's not a large bar. The menu is weak, none of the typical bar staples like wings, nachos, etc are to be found. Sure I guess they are trying to project more "class" than places filled with greasy and fried options, but unless you like paninis there is just not much there. I travel with a crowd that has some diverse tastes in food and it is unanimously agreed that Cask and Barrel is a place to drink but not to eat. This alone is why it must lose a star compared to comparable places with more in the way of food offerings. Overall it's a nice enough place to go when I'm not feeling hungry. read more

We came here a couple nights ago for dinner and drinks. The waitress got every single food order wrong. My friend and I both ordered meatloaf paninis but we both got meatball paninis. We thought "meh, whatever" and tried the paninis anyway. We both agreed that these were the worst paninis we've ever had. It was obvious they skimped on the meat and the buns were very very dry - c'mon, would it kill you to put some mayo or something on that bread... The other members of our party ordered a chicken salad and a garden panini. The chicken came cold and the garden panini instead came as a salad. Finally, there drink special was super lame. Buy a double and get half off on your second shot... that has got to be the worst drink special I have ever heard of. I usually turn the other cheek but this place needs to be shut down... read more

The atmosphere was great and if I had just been going for a couple drinks with friends, I would have given the Cask & Barrel a better review. I went for lunch, however and was very disappointed. After asking the server about one of the dishes, she had me feeling confident it would be something I would enjoy. When the panini arrived though, it was a different story. It was not as she had described and I feel like it might have even been missing the main ingredient, the chicken. The service seemed slow, especially since there were only two or three other tables and the food also seemed slowed, given how simple it would have been to make our sandwiches (we were told the spread was pre-made). I've been here a few times for drinks, but this is the first time I've had lunch at The Cask and Barrel. Didn't seem very busy for lunch service and the food came quickly. The food menu is fairly small, but consisted of decent 'upscale' pub fair. The decor is nice, the ambiance is very difference from the evenings. Still really like the chairs made from re-purposed casks. The food was fairly good; on par with similar establishments. The 'entree' type items were decently priced and portions were fair. I liked that the food wasn't greasy, especially for a weekday lunch. Would go again for lunch, especially when other places are packed. read more

Not sure what's with all the bummed-out Yelp reviews, because I thought this place was great! It's a small venue crowded with furniture, but in a cozy way. You can have your choice of wooden chairs or comfy couches. They boast a lot of local brews and happy hour is until 7pm on weekdays, which makes it the perfect stop for an after-work drink. I ordered their Aurora pasta for dinner and it was fantastic. I wanted to top it off with their Bailey's cheesecake for dessert, but they didn't have it in stock. Sadly, they were actually out of quite a few items when we came here, so that's why they're only getting 4 stars today. Our server Andrea was great though, which almost makes up for the missing menu items! Furthermore, music was awesome which also goes against other Yelp reviews. Bring a flare gun. Or an air horn. This place isn't that big, but the music is blasting like it's a 10,000 sq/ft nightclub. I get some people like it so loud they can't hear themselves think anymore but holy hell, good luck getting your order in. I called the main number to get the staff's attention while I was sitting in front of my server. Ya. That bad. Perhaps my experience was unique but I seriously doubt it. I came here to see a band on a Saturday afternoon. The place is very cozy, albeit crowded, but the furniture is laid out in such a way that it is relatively easy to move around. Sound is excellent, and there is a good selection of drinks. I did not check out the drink prices or the food menu, as I was literally only stopping by to hear the band, but I would like to come here again to try some of the food, perhaps when it is not so busy. Cask & Barrel is fairly decent... Not bad, not great, just an average neighbourhood place. What I like about Cask... The decor is unique and cozy. They also have a fairly decent patio for the warmer months. There's also a sunken lounge area with couches. The menu, which has recently been updated, is not loaded with greasy, fried options. The paninis are usually what I go for, or the CB Mac n cheese. If you are overly hungry, you might want to order an appie. There's nothing that I really dislike... At first I was pretty unsure of The Cask and Barrel. I had a friend recommend it and I had never heard of it or really even seen it. I was a little skeptical because the server said they were out of a beer that they later served to someone else, perhaps not a good start. There is an eclectic group of people at tiny pub/lounge and I was really unsure if I'd love it. That being said the ambiance, decor and friendly servers won me over. My heart melted a little when the bartender bought an old man that stopped in his beer. He was so happy and seeing that just made my day! The food we had was really good and I'm always skeptical of food at pubs the tomato soup was unreal and I would go back just for that! This place has some great things about it...and some not so great. There is so much possibility with this place, I hope they figure out what they want to do with it, and quickly. Our department popped in on Friday late in the afternoon (Yay! We're on the same block!) and it was just starting to get busy. We snagged a table that could fit us all, at the 'peak' there were 9 of us there, overall 11 different people were served. The seating is comfortable and the service & drink prices reasonable. Everyone loved the decor. The not so great things: - music too loud for groups to have a conversation, it's not a nightclub, there is no dancefloor - I wouldn't call the music collection hipster, but quite varied, most being unrecognizable to me (28 yrs old). Recognized the odd Beatles and Rolling Stones song, and whoever sang 'Brown Eyed Girl', etc. Found most of the music to be dated, heard one current top 40 song in 4 hours there - Lack of menu options for a group (we ordered the spinach dip & hummus 'cause that's all they had for 'sharables') - Menu options available are lunch focused - Beverage menu is odd, they say they are a whisk(e)y bar, but it's not obvious in the beverage menu - Bathrooms are nice, but there's only 1 toilet for the men & 1 toilet for the women. Lots of standing in line... The most interesting part was the Mr. of one my my coworkers came to pick her up and stayed for a drink. He's been in the high-end resto/bar business for 10+ years and knew each and every liquor on the menu. Nothing stood out as being special or unique to this business. All of the hard-liquor was available at his bar. Wine selection had 1 gem (Sandhill) but is a small batch wine, so it will run out soon enough. BIggest plus for the group was Innis & Gunn on tap. This is hip and trendy bistro-pub with really cool interior decorating. When we first sat down we found a cozy spot in the corner with stumps for tables. Very cool idea!... For drinks, right? Not so much for a nice meal. (The highest was about 2 ft) So when the dinner rush cleared up, moved to a window seat with a high table. At some point we ordered an appetizer, and drinks. The drink was a Scotch ceasar, which I drank on recommendation perhaps against my better judgement. I can't say that I was a fan of Scotch used that particular way. The appetizers never did come, though we left for an extended period and came back but our friends stayed... so we were not sure if it was intentional. The mains on the menu were a bit strange, honestly. A Greek dish, a Thai dish, and a Jamaican dish. I went for the jerk, and it was really quite fine though pricey for the portion. I really want to like this place, it's a cool spot and a great location but I do think they need to step up their menu a bit and offer some more traditional fare and sharing items, or somehow craft a unique identity from their wide selection, which kind of seems to be lacking read more
