After seeing this place online I HAD to try their food. We ordered the Sals Calzone, jumbo Donair and poutine. I could smell the calzone all the way back home. It was humungous and so was the Donair! I tried a bite of the poutine and Donair they were both delish. It was not soggy and meat was really good. That calzone though .... WOW .... It was sooo good. I won an IG prize for two calzones and two milkshakes. I was able to choose whatever flavours were on the menu. I opted for the Sal's Famous and Meatlovers calzones. My husband and I were surprised how large the calzones were! They were the size of large individual pizzas! To be honest I was expecting them to be the size of pizza pockets or empanadas. They were large enough for my husband and I to share one calzone! They were baked fresh. Crispy crust and gooey cheese. The seasoning was just right. The calzones were generously packed with ingredients. I was impressed! The milkshakes were thick but I was able to drink with a straw. I had a strawberry milkshake while my husband chose cappuccino flavour. The service was friendly and warm. I had to wait a bit but it was definitely worth the wait! The calzones were freshly baked! There was friendly banter with the staff and customers. Nice welcoming vibe here. The ambience is of a local diner. A nice place to meet up with friends and family to grab a bite. There were a lot of tables and seating available. I wouldn't have known about this place without the IG giveaway but honestly I would love to come back. They have an extensive menu. You gotta try the Calzone! My previous experience with calzones definitely didn't prepare me for this! Sal's calzones are the equivalent to a small/medium pizza but with the dough on both sides. I did find there were pieces that had too much crust but some may like that. We did take out so I can't rate our grade the inside ambiance or design but I hear it was filled with regulars which is a good sign. You should order your calzone well in advance because it takes a while to make and bake, definitely longer than a regular pie. Their milkshakes are good because it's hard to drink it through a straw. That means that they use a good amount of ice cream instead of a bunch of milk. But I'm lactose intolerant so maybe I'm not the best judge lol. read more

Meatlovers Calzone National Calzone Day was on November 1st, so I ordered the Meatlovers Calzone @salsfamous For only $13.82 (gst not included), I think it's the best bang for your buck for a calzone! The calzone was about 11 inches by 7 inches, with the thickest part at 2 inches! It had pizza sauce and was jammed packed with pepperoni, ham, donair meat, italian sausage, bacon and mozzarella. The ratio of dough to filling was just right, exterior crust was perfect as I didn't think it was thick and it had a nice chew and bite to it. It was topped with a bit more of shredded mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese. I got 4 meals out of this calzone, that's just how big it was! If you haven't tried the calzones from Sal's Famous, you should! read more

I've never been disappointed with this place! The calzones are massive! Packed with food, so you really get your moneys worth. The street bread is one of the best things I've ate at this place. The pizza is quite good, same with the fries! And the milkshakes are super thick, and super tasty. I can't give a higher review, but Sals Famous might be my favourite all time restaurant. read more

Came the other day to get take out before the oilers game asked for 2 pizza burger combos and was given 2 cheeseburger combos instead. Unfortunately didn't find this out until I got home. The cheese burger have their house sauce a mix of condiments overpowered by ketchup. When I called back in to find out what I could to correct my order. They said no credit you have to bring the food back. So today I had to miss the first period of the hockey game. I did ask if I have to come back what is compensating me for my gas? They did give me fresh burgers and milkshakes. They also tried to offer me back the food we wouldnt eat in the first place. I'm guessing they wanted to give me back the old food because they didn't make us fresh fries. So ended up waiting almost an hour from ordering going home going back getting my first bite of food. So paid $5.50 extra for each combo and didn't get fries in the end. The burgers were pretty good but not worth the hassle. read more

Not the worst donair but it could have been so much better. I wish I could give this place more than two stars. When the meal came it looked so promising. For $9, the weight and size of the regular cheese donair was great. The first bite of meat was... good. It went downhill from there. Why do some places insist on using poor quality onions? Skip the onions here. The variety used were pungent. It's all you could taste. It is one item that donair shops shouldn't cut corners on. The onions really became a problem because of how the donair was made. The layering technique used put all the onions in one place, then all the lettuce, then all the tomatoes, then all the meat. They provided a lot of toppings (primarily onions) so the pita never fully closed. That meant that you had to eat across the top, taking multiple bites in a row, just to get all of the toppings in your mouth at one time. Before I realized this, I accidentally ate whole mouthfuls of onion with nothing else. Disgusting. Another downside was the pita was chewy which made it hard to bit through and I didn't even notice the cheese. You know, overall, it really had very little going for it. If I ever come back I'll try something else. Oh no! I just touched my eye and my finger had onion juice on it. This is the worst! read more

Not too shabby at all. Perhaps a little on the pricey side. Especially given they wanted $2 for a cup of garlic sauce (a small cup) on the side. Also...only one size donair. Anyway... Had a hard fought battle on a Sunday afternoon to find a shop that was open. Wound up at Sals. Nice, bright and clean. A well put togwther shop. Friendly staff. Donair was pretty good. Meat was well seasoned...but I don't think it touched a grill after being cut from rack. It was not crisped at all and seemed a little...mushy. But it tasted good! Sweet sauce was allright. Veggies. Fresh enough. All in all I was pleasantly surprised. Marks off for lack of donair selection and high prices. I would actually stop in again fo sample some of their other good as it seem donairs are not their "bread & butter". I would be. Tonight we ordered Sal's and got two calzones; 1 meat lovers and 1 chicken club calzone. The food was hot and the ingredients tasted fresh. The portions have remained fairly large. The chicken club calzone had way too much garlic sauce on it for my personal preference and it ruined the overall flavour/texture for me. A meat lovers calzone cost $18.00. Then chicken club calzone was $17. I was shocked at the prices considering not even a year ago a meat lovers calzone was only $14.50. Overall, the food was Ok. Definitely filling and lots of leftovers for tomorrow however we will not likely be returning anytime soon due to the significant price increase. read more

Hello again all. As mentioned in my previous review of Chop In Sutton place Downtown Edmonton. I was going to give a second review for our return visit last Friday. February 22/ 2019 We came back for another dinner date because of our exceptional experience on Valentine's Day this year. On this visit I decided to order pasta. Being that I am a big fan pasta. I am partial to a white sauce when it comes to linguini however Choo does not have this on the menu. So I ordered the Tomato Basil Linguini, with chicken. I truly enjoyed it. However I do wish they would have clicked it up instead of serving it whole. It did seem a little small for the amount of pasta. But nonetheless it was pretty delicious. I should mention we ordered onion rings to start. They were fairly large and very crispy. The aioli for dipping was especially tatty as well. She decided to go with the top sirloin with fully loaded baked potato. She likes her stake done medium, unfortunately it was over cooked to well done and was pretty dry. However the baked potato was very good! For drinks I returned to the Wred (yes that's how the brewer spells it ) wheat ale. It is such a delicious micro brewed beer. She also had the strawberry basil martini again. Another very delicious and refreshing martini. In closing I would like to Thank the staff and manager once again for their exceptional service and making sure our second experience was as good as the first. A part from the over cooked top sirloin our second visit was fantastic. We will be returning yet again to see the great staff and try more of the Chop menu. Thanks for tuning in guys and dolls. We've come here on numerous occasions for the vast array of delicious food they make! When I first ordered the deep fried pickles they were cut coin size instead of in strips, which made this my favourite spot for the cravings. However they have since switched to spears, but the batter & flavour are still delicious! The Donair are really good. Not really anything extravagant to report besides the flavour being fuller than other Donair shops. My husband loves their milkshakes! He says they are sup thick & creamy and packed full of whatever flavour you order. The staff a friendly. Limited seating available. read more

SO, honest review, and I can only base this on what I ordered... Calzone; Honestly, cooked to perfection. The crust was amazing. My problem begins with the ingredients inside. The pizza sauce pretty much screams Sysco generic pizza sauce. No herbs, seasonings or anything else special. I ordered the Hawaiian special. So the ham was very salty and processed tasting and the pineapple was underripe and hard on the teeth. Like honestly, even after re-heating, the pineapple was hard. Fail! French Fries; I didn't even order the fries, but after watching the kitchen/cook line screw up the previous 3 orders, they threw in an order of fries for free. Hey! Good Customer retention! But the fries were greasy and unseasoned. I personally think they just cooked too many french fry orders and were looking to save face with those of us waiting. Donair; You know what? Not bad actually. Besides being the frozen Sysco donair meat crap that almost every donair place is serving to us. Nothing original here. Battered mushrooms; These were actually a surprise as I personally don't like battered mushrooms. Easy on the grease, by some miracle, but fresh and light on the inside. Good job guys. Service; While the service was good and attention orientated towards the customer, they did mess up 3 prior orders to mine. Wait, make that 4 orders, mine included. I paid the extra fee for a sauce on the side for my donair. I ordered the sweet sauce. I was not so pleasantly surprised by Ranch Dressing in my to go container. All in all, this place has potential, however their organization needs a serious overhaul. Maybe in another 6 months, when they're ready, this place could be good. For now, go to your local favorite. This isn't a place to go for healthy grub, but if you need something fatty and/or salty, Sal's is great. I'm not sure if there's anything particularly famous about it - this is a new location and there others in Morinville and Athabasca. The calzones are gigantic - two people can easily share one. They put a little bit of tomato sauce in each of them, but if you want more tomato flavour, I recommend adding diced tomatoes. Service is very friendly and when they promised a calzone in 15 minutes, but it wasn't ready, they gave me a free milkshake. And the calzones are good enough that we ordered 3 of them within a two week period. I should mention that my takeout calzones were crispier than the one that I ordered via Skip the Dishes. I would also recommend that they add better vegetarian toppings for the calzones. I'd like to be able to add fresh spinach at least. read more

Always looking for fabulous pizza and this place did not disappoint. Have gotten the donair pizza twice now with extra meat and cheese. For $20 you get a great tasting, good sized pizza. The crust is perfect, donair meat is perfectly flavoured and the cheese is not greasy. Burgers are tasty and like homemade. The fries are amazing. They have that coating on them that makes them crispy so worth a slightly increased price over regular fries. Plus they are the kind that don't have the skin on them. Gravy was pretty good. The tomato sauce is homemade and is really tasty and not too heavy on the oregano or other dominating spices...just a nice balance of flavours. The regular donair was huge and we were glad we just ordered one to share. It's messy to eat because they stuff the pita with a ton of meat so be prepared. Prices are reasonable. We love supporting local "Mom and Pop" type restaurants like this one and the staff/owners are super friendly so we always order for pick up just to say hello! read more

I really enjoy seeing places like these succeed and from the experience my girlfriend and I had last night, I can say that we will definitely be back. We each ordered the butter chicken poutine and other than the chicken being a tad too salty for the both of us (would probably be unreal after a night of drinking) the experience was pretty good. We got our orders to go and upon returning home, our fries were still nice and crisp, the butter chicken sauce was tangy though you were still able to taste the spices that went into the sauce and chicken, though over seasoned, was juicy and tender. Only other critique I could offer regarding our meal would be I wish the poutines had REAL cheese curds instead of shredded mozzarella. Will definitely be back to try one of their huge calzones! I visited based on seeing a friend's leftover calzone. It was huge. Lol My gf and I went for a late supper. I ordered the Greek donair and she opted for the poutine. The restaurant looked clean and 2 out 5 staff were quite friendly. First off...I must mention I am a donair junkie. I have my favourites but always willing to see if someone can meet or beat my expectations. So, although the veg was fresh in my donair, the meat coming out of a steam tray is REALLY offputting to me. I hate not knowing if the meat is fresh, cooked, handled and stored correctly. I always look at the spit before I order to make sure I get what I'm paying for and their was a gloriously cooked rotating mass of heaven behind the counter. Once we ordered and sat down, I saw the soggy, questionable, grey, paper thin slices of used meat hit the flat top. Not appetizing at all. This is where I normally ask for my money back and go to one of my favorite and trusted places...but my gf hates when I do that. And I didn't want to ruin her experience as well. She had nothing to say about her poutine except that the gravy was OK, and that she wished that when you order a poutine, you get a poutine. You can't call it a poutine unless there are CURDS. The shredded cheese is a cheap attempt at "poutine" After I finished my overly steamed (meat AND pita) and sideways( all veg on top, all meat on bottom) "donair"...it occurred to me that what I just had was a side salad to start, and a soggy protein mass for my main. All wrapped in what resembled wet newspaper. I may order a calzone one day....but I don't want to think about how that meat is stored, cooked, or prepared either. Non return customer. read more

Horrible customer service and the food changed from the first time I had it. Walked in and had the employees chasing me in asking me what I wanted. I remember the first time I ate here the food was amazing! Crispy and fresh cut fries, home made gravy, and a solid Donair! Now the fries are frozen, gravy that tastes like absolute crap, maybe from a can, and a Donair that's so damn dry and stale that I wouldn't give it to my damn dog. I don't know what happened between now and the last few weeks, but the food is horrendous compared to other places and hella expensive! Definitely lost a customer! I am beyond disappointed and pissed off at this establishment. I ordered through skip the dishes and it was wrong. When I called sal's to check and see is my donair was left behind or if I was given the wrong order, the first time they hung up, second time didn't answer and then the third time they picked up and not only did my problem get neglected and was yelled at by the owner who didn't do anything to fix the problem besides to say that my order was packed by him and sent out but all I was given was fries and pop and missing my donair. To have management who neglects customers weather is was skip the dishes wrong or in store, and do nothing in order to fix the problem is bullshit. And told me the store was closed at 9 when on google it says 9:30. Never again will I go to this restaurant since the manager/owner and employees are neglectful and disrespectful.
