We enjoyed a lunch here on the patio on a lovely day in September. Atmosphere is classic if not dated. It was nice that we were on the patio and there wasn't a lot of traffic noise to interfere with our conversation. Menu is pretty basic but works because this place has been here forever. Service was a little slow and i am not sure why because there wasn't many people here, and most of them are on the patio with us. Server was okay but doesn't get any stars for being friendly. We decided on a the panko crusted halibut and hubby decided on the burger. Our friends chose the egg salad sandwich and the veggie burger. Food was okay but portions were really small. *(Look at my fish). What I will say is their potato salad was amazing. Really worth looking into. My fish was fine flavour wise but a little over cooked and so small. I probably won't come here again unless it is to pick up the potato salad to go. read more

I came here at the recommendation of our fabulous Yelp CM for a mother daughter date before going to the Jube for a show. My daughter wanted a grown up experience so I swear she ordered the most expensive items on the menu, lol! She wanted to try the Brie with fruit for $13.25 and I gotta say I was disappointed. It was the most unappetizing selection of bread and fruit with Brie that I have ever had - the Brie wasn't even melty gooey - just luke warm. We hardly touched it and I would not recommend this as a starter. Next up, I had the French Onion soup for $7.50 which was full of hearty flavour and done differently with warmed bread with melted cheese on the side rather than cheese over top. I must say I think I prefer the classic version but the flavours were definitely spot on. For mains, my I chose the steak special for $21.95 which was done perfectly to medium rare. The presentation was beautiful but the meat itself was a bit chewy (to no fault of the chef). The mashed potatoes were seasoned just right and the assortment of veggies was excellent. My daughter ordered the special pasta, spinach stuffed cannelloni for $18.95. She absolutely loved it and the leftovers were still awesome at home. I ordered the Sticky Toffee for $6.75 and it did not disappoint. Rich, small, and perfect for an already full tummy. I was beyond stuffed and didn't even try a bite of the brownie and ice cream she ordered ($3 and $1.75) respectively but they looked delish. Overall, I'd definitely come back but I'd prefer my next visit with my 7 year old to be more in the $30 dollar range ;-) They had some fabulous sounding pies and speciality teas coffees as well as sandwiches and even grilled cheese. What a gem of a cafe! I made a reservation for 5PM for 4 people and when I arrived shortly before, my table mates were seated in a booth. I liked how private it felt as I couldn't see any other diners. They had the sign with specials by our booth so we could have a look. The server brought us freshly baked cute square buns. They were warm and the butter melted right into it. We didn't have to wait long for our food. I ordered the beef lasagna which comes with a side salad. My table mates had the grilled salmon served on a bed of salad and the pan fried chicken breast. The prices are really good and I was impressed with my lasagna for $12.95. The salad was served on a plate and it had a nice amount of dressing. The lasagna had the right amount of cheese and beef. It was a decent size and I finished half as the salad and bread filled me up. We looked at the dessert menu but no one ordered as we were too full. The menu had cookies, squares, pies, cakes, and ice cream. This would be a great place to come for dessert or take away as they are displayed by the entrance and look delicious! Our server was friendly and efficient. Our drinks were refilled and plates taken away promptly. I made reservations a week ahead so we were shown directly to our table, by Aubrey, the moment we arrived. They were very accommodating for our party - with one member showing up later and just for dessert. Two of us had chai lattes, which Aubrey took the time to return and ask if we wanted sweet, and were the perfect blend of spice and warmth. We started with the baked brie which came with an assortment of bread, crackers, and fruits. My sister is a vegetarian and was happy to see so many vegetarian entree options. I had the special of the day - the panko and almond breaded tilapia. The spice on the fish was delicious and the roasted veggies on the side were perfectly done. They have a potato of the day, which is how you just know a restaurant is for you. The desserts were all delicious, I would return for a coffee and sticky toffee pudding any day. I have always loved the Upper Crust, mostly because its super close to where I live. It's one of the healthy choices for me, and I always forget it as an option. It's like a quiet presence in the back of my mind but when I remember, I can't NOT go. This day I was here for a work thing, so everyone got something different. I think the entire crew was happy and gushing about the taste of the food. The service was a little slow and forgetful but hey, we were a big table. The food was well prepared and once again, I overate. I had the short ribs and honestly, they were some of the best I have had. You can't come to UC and not have dessert. Home delivery - WOO HOO! I called at 1pm and placed a $140 order: three frozen lasagnas, three salads, two shepherds pies, an egg salad sandwich and a country chocolate cake. I said that it didn't matter if it was delivered that day or the next but delivery was just a couple hours later - Mark phoned to say that it was at my door. Perfect, everything was as ordered, even the vegetables for the sandwich were wrapped separately, on the side. The salads were fresh and tasted wonderful. How they manage to get their potato salad tasting the same every single time is a small miracle to me. This place is great for the elderly who want to enjoy a quite dull atmosphere. The decor is outdated. Food is over cooked and overpriced and at best tasteless. I have been to Upper Crust a few times, and it's literally only half a block from my house! This place is amazing. I am a huge fan of it! There was a point in time where we would go strictly on Saturday mornings so I could get the waffles. I loooooove waffles, and Upper Crust does them right! Fresh fruit, candied almonds and this sweet maple cream cheese spread. Ohhhhh, I'm drooling just thinking about it! I have also had lunch there, and they made me the most amazing sandwiches. Toasted brown bread, heaps of ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and micro-greens. I still rave about this sandwich and has to be one of the best I've ever had. Tip: Get it toasted! I have not been to the Cafe yet but I have been using their Catering services for over 3 years. Their food is fresh, delicious and delivered with a smile. We were getting tired of ordering sandwiches anytime we have a lunch meeting at the office. I found out they can deliver and have been ordering from them ever since. They have a few different catering menus to choose from- a daily menu and a monthly menu. They also offer festive meals- turkey dinner, ham dinner. A few of our office favourites: chili, lasagna, both the vegetarian and the beef version, ham mashed potatoes, tortiere, Greek chicken, beef Bourguignon. I came for lunch with me, myself and I today before heading in to work. Much needed as I haven't exactly had a lot of downtime. My server greeted me with a pleasant smile and led me to the back of the cafe by a great window seat. I usually do not order sandwiches at cafes or restaurants but I love their sandwiches and potato salads here!!! They also have the most amazing range of house made pies, tortes, cakes, cookies, squares and sweets. It makes me sad that I can't always order everything. Years ago, I worked for an organization that ordered Upper Crust catering on the regular, so I was excited to try out the actual location in person. It was a hit-or-miss experience, unfortunately. THE GOOD: The food was just as great as I remember the catering to be. Because of my allergies, I was a bit limited in my choices, (and they were out of their feta and spinach quiche,) so I had a full-sized Caesar salad that was rich and filled with garlic and delicious! My partner had a bison burger that had him raving for hours afterwards. THE BAD: After explaining my allergies to our server, we opted to start with the brie, without fruit. When the order was up, there was fruit on the plate (he had entered the order as "no fruit, honeydew allergy"). Unfortunately, we had to send it back because I am allergic to several fruits, including many that were on the plate. The brie was quickly returned and upon questioning, we learned that the cheese, crackers, and bread had simply been replated, "but only the bottom of the cheese had touched the fruit, so it should be fine," to say nothing of the breads that had shared the plate with juicy fruits. So, I had a cracker and cheese to try it (it was tasty,) but didn't trust it in the end. So, if you have severe allergies, keep a close eye on what you're being served. THE MIXED: We were seated relatively quickly, but then it was over 10 minutes (at which point I stopped keeping track) before anyone came by to take our drink order. It would have been understandable if it were busy, but there was only one other table in the cafe. And five servers were lined up folding napkins behind the counter, all carefully not making eye contact with us. When we were finally helped, our server was very apologetic and helpful, even as the night went on and it got busier. Parking can be tricky in the area, with the cluster of one-way streets. It's best to come in from the north (heading south) and park on the one-way along the side of the building...just be wary of drivers disregarding the one-way, speeding, and backing up without looking! read more

There is actually more to the Upper Crust then just pie - a cute room, nice sandwiches, 2 sometimes 3 different quiches of the day - which is probably why my Mom and all her retired friends, and all their retired friends, and so on, and so on, love this place. Well, quiche AND the pies of course. Come to think of it, I think my Mom might live off pie and quiche alone... Hmmm. Anyhoo - go for lunch, stay for the pie. First off: the lemon squares are a bonafide 5 star, and possibly one of the my favourites I've had of that type. All the other baking looked terrific. it's a very diverse menu and it's hard to ascribe a category since they do a little bit of everything. They do have a number sandwich and soup options, so that meats the cafe criteria; however, there's a Thai dish, fish fillet with rice pillaf, bison burger and many others. My wife really enjoyed her French onion soup, which came with baguette with melted aged cheese on it. The caesar salad was okay, but the added chicken was overcooked (likely pre-cooked) and bland. My mom really enjoyed her Thai dish (I can say it smelled good), and my cousin's rainbow trout looked really well prepared - which he enjoyed. My bison burger was just okay. I'm aware that it's a lean meat, but it was almost leaner than I've had before and a bit overcooked. The bun was fresh but started to fall apart halfway through. There were still positives to it however. I was with a large group, and most people had varying levels of a positive experience. My take: main dishes somewhere between a 3-4; desserts 4-5. Unfortunately I am leaving a bad review because of the way I was treated when mentioning my sandwich bread was hard and stale! I had ordered an egg salad on multi grain as I always do when I come here..never had an issue before...it was terrible and so I asked them to remake it using a fresh loaf...ya right, came back it was the same stale bread. When I made a complaint to the manager he basically said he had never seen me before and told me I just should take a refund. Not good customer service. Rather than making it right he told me to leave! When I said I've been coming here for years he told me he never seen me before and he was there for many years. My boyfriend brought me here for birthday dinner last night! It's a place we've both been eager to try for some time. I had the masala, and Dan had the Bobotie. We both really enjoyed our meals, and stopped midway to save room for dessert! If you come here for a meal, I strongly suggest that you do the same. Their dessert menu is incredible. I stared at it for quite some time, and it was a tough decision! We ended up getting the chocolate cheesecake and the sticky toffee pudding. I was over the moon with the toffee pudding- probably one of the best desserts I've ever eaten. The cheesecake is pretty good as far as cheesecake goes, but I would try something different next time. I ordered pancakes and was delivered waffles, took forever to bring out a simple tea. When I asked for milk or cream the server handed me a nearly empty one from a table she was cleaning off (gross). As a university student, Upper Crust Café was one of my favorite stops for a group lunch or a quiet dinner with friends. I had all but forgotten about it until last Friday when I was out and about on a day off and looking for a late lunch. In the few years since I had been, nothing has changed. Upper Crust is wonderful, both in terms of atmosphere and food. There are many windows in the café, making it light and bright throughout. There are nice touches like rolled hand towels in the bathroom instead of paper towels or dryers, and local art is displayed on the walls. I am a huge fan of the food at Upper Crust. Both the sandwiches and entrees are great, but I love a sandwich with potato salad. The turkey sandwich I had most recently was exceptional, with fresh ingredients and a perfect proportion of meat to other toppings. It is so refreshing to visit a restaurant with no deep fried food for a change! Desserts are also available for takeout at the door, and after our meal last week we bought blueberry pie and chocolate cake to have with our dinner later. Both were delicious, and worth the wait. I recall many years ago that their sticky toffee pudding was voted best in the city, and based on the comments I heard at tables around me, it is still top notch. A friend of mine suggested we go to Upper Crust for a late dinner and a couple of drinks on a Thursday night. Our group of 6 met up around 7. I was kinda worried as it wasn't very busy and their was only a couple other tables with customers but my concerns quickly disappeared. I asked my friends what they recommend and they said, "anything,' so I went for the Rainbow trout. My expectations were low as it was priced at only $12. Wow, was I surprised! It was fantastic. The portion size was moderate, but it tasted great. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal without a complaint. The interior was also quit nice and the service was prompt and polite. Our group never made it out for drinks, but it didn't matter. We all enjoyed an excellent meal for under $15 an entree. Upper Crust is one of Edmonton's best Cafe's. The food is great, there is a great ambiance and its independent. If you are looking for a place to meet friends, go on a first date or just relax, try the Upper Crust. With all the chain restaurants in Edmonton, The Upper Crust Cafe is like a little independent oasis of yummy goodness! I eat here almost every time I am back in town and it is always spectacular. I even have an affectionate nickname which is "The Crust." I love how The Crust looks a bit like a granny house, all warm, cozy and inviting. It makes me feel like eating pie, sipping tea and talking about the good ol days which is what I guess I do when I go there! My favorite thing on the menu is the California Salad because of the warm feta crusted balls they put on top. My friend and I even have a little song about these delicious cheese balls...did I mention I am kinda a dork?! New York steak and two burgers. Enough to fill a family of four starving persons. This is not a place you go to if you're in a hurry. Food takes time to arrive. But it taste great. The cafe looks small but there is always plenty of seating. Nice decore and lighting. The waiter staff are friendly and knowledgeable. This is our go to place for good burgers and steak. The Upper Crust is the restaurant portion of a restaurant/catering business. They are great caterers and have an excellent little cafe/restaurant. They also have a deli counter at the entrance that sells artisan baked goods, cheeses, spreads and desserts. This is true cafe dining, so the menu is sandwiches, middle plates and soups. And, like a little French cafe, the thing to do is to have the specials. But, before talking about their specials, I have to say that the Kaiser Filet (Filet steak on a Kaiser roll) is the BEST steak sandwich in the City. Steak, light mayo, lettuce on a fresh Kaiser roll is simply perfection served with a sensible portion of potato salad. I live nearby, so I've been through the menu. It's all good, but what keeps me coming back is the specials. Invaribly, the specials will consist of a pasta dish and a meat/fish dish and a homemade soup of the day. I have the soup. I don't care what it is, it's going to be terrific. Then, the challenge is to choose whether or not I'm up for pasta or not. I have never had a disappointing meal that the Upper Crust. We came for lunch with a group of friends from work. The good thing about this place is that they accept reservations. There were seven of us and we were seated within minutes of our arrival. As soon as you walk into the restaurant, you're immediately welcomed with the sight of a wonderful assortment of delicious cakes and desserts. Very tempting to skip lunch and go straight to dessert! For lunch I ordered a salmon salad sandwich, with oat bread and a side of yummy potato salad. There's a variety of bread to choose from including rye, multi grain, French. There's also a variety of side salads to pick from. We didn't wait very long for our food. The prices are very reasonable. For around $8 you get a sandwich and side. Great quality for this price and a sit down meal. The food is very colorful and made of super fresh ingredients. They feel homemade! The portions were just the right amount. Very flavorful food. No one had leftovers at our table and we were all happily full. The restaurant feels happy, bright and cheerful. There's lots of windows and natural sunlight (helps it was a sunny day). There's also plenty of seating areas for guests. I also enjoyed seeing the large and colorful paintings on the walls. The washroom was also very nice. I feel like a place is super fancy when I see little rolled up hand towels to dry our hands. Reminds me of a chic hotel or something. I've been here a couple times before and also our work occasionally gets food catered from here. If you haven't had a chance, I recommend eating here. It's delicious! I'm very sad to give a low review upon only the first visit here but today's service was really below par. After ordering a few items at the counter I decided to sit down and asked the lady at the counter if I could do so since the cafe was only about half full. She said of course and thus I sat down for my food. After finishing quickly, I came up to the counter to pay. There, another lady had a covert whispered conversation with the lady who had assisted me the first time that I would have to pay diner prices (aka higher prices) for the items since I had sat down. I was taken aback since no one had informed me about this prior to me sitting down. Then, she went on to tell me the total (about 20% higher than what I had expected). No explanation. Only when I asked did she tell me about the situation. After I said I hadn't known, she shrugged. No apology. In my opinion, this was a mistake of omission on the part of the business and should have been rectified by them by charging me the original price. Furthermore, the fact that there was not even an apology after I was clearly unhappy.. I paid quickly and left. Unfortunately the experience has left a sour taste in my mouth and I'm afraid I will not be back. read more

Great catering... not so great dining-in. Basically, the food is really good (sandwiches and potato salad especially) and really reasonably priced. But the service if you want to dine in is pretty terrible. Expect long waits, especially if you go at lunch time (which is problematic if its your work lunch hour) to order, for food, and, god forbid, if you want your bill. read more

This is a fabulous place to go for lunch. I absolutely love their kaiser chicken sandwich. The chicken is the juiciest I have ever tasted -- not at all dry! The prices are very decent, and the servers are attentive. There are lot of healthy options on the menu, which gives you room to try some of their amazing dessert! There are also sometimes events held in their comfortable and inviting back room. I once went to a poetry reading here and it was a really nice setting. This will be the weirdest review I've ever written - it's based soley on some leftovers my granddaughter brought home! Even warmed up in the microwave, the bites she shared of spinach cannelloni made me yearning for a full plate - just the perfectly spiced red sauce, blend of spinach and ricotta, pasta al dent - completely perfect. Headed here to treat my spouse to a birthday dinner. We weren't greeted right away but we were seated promptly once the host came by. My partner had the Rainbow Trout ($14.99) with grilled vegetables (eggplant/zucchini/asparagus/mushrooms) with white rice. Her dish was great, this fish was cooked well and the veggies were flavourful. The rice on her dish was bland and disappointing. The real problem came in with my dish, the Boboti. A South African style meatloaf dish. The menu had very little description and the server recommended it. Essentially, it was meatloaf with curry and fruit in it, topped with egg and warm banana. They served it with saffron rice and chutney and salad. The salad was two tomato slices with a couple rings of onion on top. The dish was cloyingly sweet and after a few bites it became inedible. It was more of a gigantic dessert than a suitable dinner. Our sever checked on the food quality after the first bite and then didn't return. Despite the fact that I left over half my food unfinished, she didn't enquire if anything was wrong, instead clearing my plate and offering to pack it up. Additionally, we were seated next to a large party and the room was scorching hot. It was noisy and s unpleasant given that we were a group of two. I was excited for this dinner and had high expectations. Upper Crust didn't deliver. Head here for dessert but not for dinner. read more

It's soooo busy here, even at 1:00pm when we thought we'd miss the lunch rush. Great atmosphere. Very nice staff. I loved the selections in the menu and there are even more daily chef specials. I had the soup of the day, chicken corn chowder. Rich, flavourful but not real thick and creamy. One of the 4 quiches was salmon. Lovely and delicate. Lots of subtle flavour. It's side was colourful coleslaw. A bit wilted. A half slice of grain bread accompanied both items. My date had the salmon salad. A site to behold. The salmon lay across a plate of greens, and fruits and nuts. It looked healthy and tasted delicious. We shared a 1/2 litre of the sauv blanc. An excellent choice, We were taken care of without being bothered. The dessert case is like a sweets museum. You walk slowly past the confections exclaiming..."Oooh, Ahhhhh". SHORT VERSION The Upper Crust Café is probably the most reliably awesome place to eat in Edmonton! Plan for some time if you want to eat during peak hours (especially brunch). Still, don't ever pass it up if you are out on a whim and want to stop by, I've done so many times and been seated quickly. The food is great and priced reasonably; and if you can't find a seat, at least grab something from the many choices at the deli, especially the desserts. What to praise next... there are so many good things to say. (Prior to posting my review I should disclose that I'm not being paid to write this, promise!) LONG VERSION ATMOSPHERE Nestled just south of the Garneau School and immediately east of 109st, the University area is quite fitting for this quaint gem of a café. I think this contributes to the unique feel and pace of The Upper Crust. Once inside you will immediately feel at home. Despite the bustle of a busy café, I always feel relaxed when I'm there. It could be the handywork of local artist on the walls, or the walls themselves, or maybe the mix of booths and tables, or the clean homey feeling bathrooms that put me at ease. The only downfall is parking, but that comes with the territory. I would say this is hardly a deterrent, it just requires a few extra minutes well invested. (Bring some coins if you happen to get a spot just outside on 86 Ave at the meters) FOOD I love bread! So, I find it particularly fine that they bring you fresh mini ciabatta buns & butter before your meal. Side note: pick up some of their molasses bread on your way out; it makes amazing toast. The Specials are where it's at if you just want to show up and be pleasantly surprised: Soups, Salads, Fish, Beef, Pork, Chicken, I think I saw Buffalo once. The quality will always be top notch. Alternately, if you just want some great standbys, the menu has several. I love the Pan Fried Chicken (I've probably had it 10+ times) My wife loves getting the garlic-mashed potatoes, crab cakes, or potato salad depending on the entrée; all are delicious. Portion sizes always seem to be just right. Don't be shy, they are very accommodating if you want things mixed around. DESSERTS If you don't go for the awesome food, you have to go for the desserts. We had them cater our wedding in 2003 and it was amazing! I love their cheesecake, chocolate cake, and fruit crumbles (Strawberry Rhubarb mmmmm... oh, and the Peach one too!). My wife and almost everyone else I know who has had it say that the Sticky Toffee Pudding is the best ever! Sometimes we just pop in to grab some of their huge cookies, or a rice crispy square for our girls. SERVICE The servers have always been friendly and attentive, and they tend to be a mix of University students and others. You will frequently find the owner working and buzzing around. With the warm weather I start feeling less and less like eating heavy meals, so, I thought I'd stop in to Upper Crust Cafe and pick up some salads from their deli counter. In the past, I have always ate in and ordered the chicken salad plate- try it once- it'll become your go-to... YUM!!!!! Tonight, I took three different salads to go. They were all delicious! Oh. Em. GOODNESS. Literally... So good!! I concur with the previous reviewer, probably the best potato salad in Edmonton. I also ordered a shredded carrot with apple and a wild rice with corn that were both delicious. Whether you are eating in or taking to go, I highly recommend getting a sweet, for now or later. The baked items are melt in your mouth GREAT and very reasonably priced. Tonight I splurged in calories on the pecan square. I have been to Upper Crust twice in the last three months, and I really enjoyed it both times!! Both times were for lunch - must try them at dinner one of these days! The first time, my friend and I shared the dip platter, which came with hummus, tzatziki, and a generous quantity of fresh vegetables (carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, and celery) and at least six triangles of grilled naan bread. Yum!! I love hummus and veggies, so perhaps I'm biased, haha. I also ordered the soup of the day as a starter for myself. If I recall correctly, that day, the soup was some sort of tomato and bean soup. It was good, if a little salty. For mains, I ordered the large vegetarian chili, but asked them to hold the cheese and sour cream. It came with a cute muffin-shaped cornbread. The chili was really good!! It had eggplant, zucchini, beans, and yellow corn, and had just enough heat to warm you up without overwhelming my palate. The portion size, I thought, was just right! My friend ordered one of the specials of the day, I think it was a stuffed chicken breast served with grilled vegetables. She said it was really good!! The other time I went, a different friend and I went out for brunch. My friend and I tried eggs benedict for the first time. It came in a pair: each had a poached egg on top of a slice of meat and an english muffin, and was topped with hollandaise sauce. It also came with hasbrowns (the good, "large chunks" kind, not the "slivers of potato" kind) and some fruit. I think it was watermelon and cantaloup? Can't remember. Anyways, it was very good! The egg yolks were just a little runny, which is the way I like my eggs. Overall, very good food, and the service was great! The food is here is super tasty, clearly of high quality and cooked with natural ingredients. The decor is a bit shabby, and service can be slow, but it's like having a home cooked meal for a decent price. You can get an entree in the range of $15-18, and there's always a nice selection of specials for the day. Today I tried a shrimp salad sandwich on cheese bread with horseradish and all of the vegetable toppings. Delicious. It was accompanied by the soup of the day, which was a thick potato corn bacon chowder, that had super thick chunks of chicken, potato and bacon. It was like it just came out of my own crockpot at home. If you're in the neighbourhood, this is a great place to visit. read more

This cafe is so cute and I had only heard good things about the food here but I was completely disappointed. The food was average but the service was the most disappointing. I went with a party of five and it took us 15 minutes just to get coffee. We ordered two quiche, French toast and eggs and bacon. The eggs didn't end up coming until everyone else was already eating and all of the food was Luke warm at best. The raspberry syrup for the French toast was very good though and the sandwiches look amazing. I also ordered a side of potato salad because I heard it shouldn't be missed; I did miss it though because the waitress forgot it and it never came. I badly want to like this cafe so I might give it another chance. Their deli looks wonderful with salads, sandwichs and baked goods. Maybe cutting out the bad service is what it will take for me to see what everyone else does. read more
