Cannelloni
Kristin K.

I came here at the recommendation of our fabulous Yelp CM for a mother daughter date before going to the Jube for a show. My daughter wanted a grown up experience so I swear she ordered the most expensive items on the menu, lol! She wanted to try the Brie with fruit for $13.25 and I gotta say I was disappointed. It was the most unappetizing selection of bread and fruit with Brie that I have ever had - the Brie wasn't even melty gooey - just luke warm. We hardly touched it and I would not recommend this as a starter. Next up, I had the French Onion soup for $7.50 which was full of hearty flavour and done differently with warmed bread with melted cheese on the side rather than cheese over top. I must say I think I prefer the classic version but the flavours were definitely spot on. For mains, my I chose the steak special for $21.95 which was done perfectly to medium rare. The presentation was beautiful but the meat itself was a bit chewy (to no fault of the chef). The mashed potatoes were seasoned just right and the assortment of veggies was excellent. My daughter ordered the special pasta, spinach stuffed cannelloni for $18.95. She absolutely loved it and the leftovers were still awesome at home. I ordered the Sticky Toffee for $6.75 and it did not disappoint. Rich, small, and perfect for an already full tummy. I was beyond stuffed and didn't even try a bite of the brownie and ice cream she ordered ($3 and $1.75) respectively but they looked delish. Overall, I'd definitely come back but I'd prefer my next visit with my 7 year old to be more in the $30 dollar range ;-) They had some fabulous sounding pies and speciality teas coffees as well as sandwiches and even grilled cheese. I will be back for sure!

What a gem of a cafe! I made a reservation for 5PM for 4 people and when I arrived shortly before, my table mates were seated in a booth. I liked how private it felt as I couldn't see any other diners. They had the sign with specials by our booth so we could have a look. The server brought us freshly baked cute square buns. They were warm and the butter melted right into it. We didn't have to wait long for our food. I ordered the beef lasagna which comes with a side salad. My table mates had the grilled salmon served on a bed of salad and the pan fried chicken breast. The prices are really good and I was impressed with my lasagna for $12.95. The salad was served on a plate and it had a nice amount of dressing. The lasagna had the right amount of cheese and beef. It was a decent size and I finished half as the salad and bread filled me up. We looked at the dessert menu but no one ordered as we were too full. The menu had cookies, squares, pies, cakes, and ice cream. This would be a great place to come for dessert or take away as they are displayed by the entrance and look delicious! Our server was friendly and efficient. Our drinks were refilled and plates taken away promptly. Lovely cafe and a place to meet friends, have a business meal, or on your own to relax and enjoy good food.

I made reservations a week ahead so we were shown directly to our table, by Aubrey, the moment we arrived. They were very accommodating for our party - with one member showing up later and just for dessert. Two of us had chai lattes, which Aubrey took the time to return and ask if we wanted sweet, and were the perfect blend of spice and warmth. We started with the baked brie which came with an assortment of bread, crackers, and fruits. My sister is a vegetarian and was happy to see so many vegetarian entree options. I had the special of the day - the panko and almond breaded tilapia. The spice on the fish was delicious and the roasted veggies on the side were perfectly done. They have a potato of the day, which is how you just know a restaurant is for you. The desserts were all delicious, I would return for a coffee and sticky toffee pudding any day. I wish I lived closer so I could be a regular.

I have always loved the Upper Crust, mostly because its super close to where I live. It's one of the healthy choices for me, and I always forget it as an option. It's like a quiet presence in the back of my mind but when I remember, I can't NOT go. This day I was here for a work thing, so everyone got something different. I think the entire crew was happy and gushing about the taste of the food. The service was a little slow and forgetful but hey, we were a big table. The food was well prepared and once again, I overate. I had the short ribs and honestly, they were some of the best I have had. You can't come to UC and not have dessert. I highly recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Seriously, it will change your life.

I have been to Upper Crust a few times, and it's literally only half a block from my house! This place is amazing. I am a huge fan of it! There was a point in time where we would go strictly on Saturday mornings so I could get the waffles. I loooooove waffles, and Upper Crust does them right! Fresh fruit, candied almonds and this sweet maple cream cheese spread. Ohhhhh, I'm drooling just thinking about it! I have also had lunch there, and they made me the most amazing sandwiches. Toasted brown bread, heaps of ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and micro-greens. I still rave about this sandwich and has to be one of the best I've ever had. Tip: Get it toasted! Their cookies are on point, and usually get a few to take home. My husband is a lover of the sweet stuff, so this place is right up both our alleys. You must try it!

Chicken salad sandwich with molasses bread and potato salad

I came for lunch with me, myself and I today before heading in to work. Much needed as I haven't exactly had a lot of downtime. My server greeted me with a pleasant smile and led me to the back of the cafe by a great window seat. I usually do not order sandwiches at cafes or restaurants but I love their sandwiches and potato salads here!!! They also have the most amazing range of house made pies, tortes, cakes, cookies, squares and sweets. It makes me sad that I can't always order everything. I was more than happy with my chicken salad sandwich with molasses bread and a side of their dill potato salad. I was so full from the sandwich that the I had to take the salad to go. All of this for $8.25 not incl tip or GST. Great value and one happy girl today!

Pie, pie, pie, pie, pie! And basically the review could very well end there... but I digress. There is actually more to the Upper Crust then just pie - a cute room, nice sandwiches, 2 sometimes 3 different quiches of the day - which is probably why my Mom and all her retired friends, and all their retired friends, and so on, and so on, love this place. Well, quiche AND the pies of course. Come to think of it, I think my Mom might live off pie and quiche alone... Hmmm. Anyhoo - go for lunch, stay for the pie. Take a second piece of pie home for dinner. That's my tip for a life well lived.

I can't believe it's taken me so long being back in Edmonton to go enjoy some delicious Farrow…read morebrunch/lunch options. It's the season for anything apples, so I was happy to find a caramel apple cronut & went for a classic grick middle (as per their website & one of my favs - Fried Egg, Bacon, Rosemary Aioli, Smoked Cheddah, Tomato Jam, Arugula). Sadly with a cane & a reuseable bag, I couldn't take a coffee to go (stair logistics are hard enough) but it's always a great cup when I do have a free hand. Oh, I should mention in case I've never did in previous reviews, neither of these food options are something one wants to eat when trying to look presentable. As it's deliciously messy! There's a few bar seats at this location but it's best to take your food to go. At this particular location (there's 4 locations now!) there's no accessible entrance (nor exit). Kind of baffles my mind on why they didn't build a ramp with the newer set of stairs at the exit door. I even made the comment that it's really too bad they don't use the order window on the side (like they did in the pandemic), for us that need to avoid the challenge of stairs. There's also no railings on the steps, so be sure footed in wet & winter conditions (even if you're not disabled). So as much as I love the food & coffee at Farrow, I have to leave it as it's a place I'm going to only on a randomly decent mobility day for the knees & legs.

Always had the cronut on my Wishlist and happened to be in the area ~11:30AM on a Saturday. Tried…read moreto call and ask if they had any left to not waste my time, but no answer. So I went anyway and they did have some! They also had FOUR people working with No other customers inside so why no one could answer the phone ... Cronut was Caramel Apple - filled with apple pie filling. 10/10 very good donut, loved the texture, lots of moist filling.

Pals Sandwiches

PALS!!! I have been a huge fan since their opening day in 2022 and it's about time that I finally…read morewrite about them! Part of the venerable Strathcona restaurant monopoly of The Next Act (the OG), Meat (the meaty one), Pip (the brunchy one), and Marlo (the taco one), Pals holds their own as the sandwich one. This five-restaurant stronghold wouldn't work if each and every one of them wasn't so dang good. But they are. Pals showed up on the scene after Pip moved across the street and there was enough room in the building to fit a delightful little sandwich shop in there as well. Pals to the left and Pip to the right - and one (beautiful) shared washroom downstairs for both. It's a pretty harmonious arrangement as far as I can tell! Pals might be a small little sandwich guy but it boasts a beautiful outdoor patio in the summertime that just about doubles the space. Named Favourite Handheld on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2024 list and most recently awarded Best Sandwich 2025 in EDify Magazine, you'll also find them on the Worldwide Faves section of this very website. The interior is somewhat small but very bright and fresh. Casual light wood high-tops, counter seating, a few bench seats near the back, and the aforementioned patio. You'll also note pops of their signature yellow, especially on their unmistakable brick facade outside. The restaurant feels breezy and gives off a comfortable vibe that makes you want to "stop in to grab a quick sandwich." And maybe people-watch out the window for a few minutes. The staff is also super friendly which makes you feel like you're hanging out with your pals. (Ha! See what I did there?) Situated at a table on a Saturday evening, I was looking for the maximum Pals experience! Pals is all about the drinks and offers an impressive array of cocktails and beer, especially for such a small shop. The Winter Sangria sounded like a seasonally appropriate delight while their Caesar made with pepperoncini brine is an ideal compliment to their use of pepperoncini elsewhere on the menu. On this visit I opted for the Strathcona Sling (Gin, cherry liqueurs, orange & pineapple juice, bitters - $15.00) which not only sounded delicious but also might be the signature beverage of the entire neighbourhood. This drink sounds like it might be pretty sweet but I didn't find that about it. It's very refreshing and the grown-up flavours from the gin and bitters hold their own. What sounds like a kid's shirley temple actually tastes quite adult. This would absolutely be the quintessential patio beverage on a hot summer day during the Fringe - a cocktail that lives up to it's name. The Pals food menu is an extravaganza of sandwiches! There are fourteen different sandwiches in two categories; made hot or served fresh. There's usually a feature sandwich as well. Be prepared for sandwiches like you've never seen them before! But the snacks, soups, and salads are incredible as well and the quality certainly doesn't stop with the sandwiches alone. In an effort to dig into this part of the menu a bit more I thought it prudent to order the Soup & Salad Combo (Choice of soup & salad with house focaccia - $19.00). A great option if maybe you don't want a sandwich. Pals usually has two different soups and salads on the go so you're able to customize this dish with whatever combo you like. I chose the House Soup (dill pickle & spicy pepperoncini) and The Other House Salad (iceberg lettuce, tomato, green onion, blue cheese, bacon, buttermilk ranch). Let's start with the soup. How unique!! You've never tasted a zingy little bowl of soup like this before! I don't know about you, but I love a dill pickle soup very much (maybe it's my Eastern European ancestry) but the addition of pepperoncini totally changes the game. This soup packs a punch but in the most interesting and delicious way. And then the salad! I ordered this one because it sounded like a wedge salad (one of my favourites) without the wedge. A deconstructed wedge salad, if you will. And boy did it deliver! The flavours of tomato and bacon together are so classic and the generous chunks of crumbled blue cheese were perfection. I loved how well-dressed everything was - not a dry leaf in the house. A salad may sound like a boring thing to order but certainly not in this case. Let's not forget the focaccia which cannot be treated as an afterthought because it was incredible. This bread was impossibly light while still possessing the unctuous and oily quality that you want from a focaccia. The crust was impossibly crispy and dusted in salt. What a dream! Honestly, I know that you need to order a sandwich... But maybe you don't? I'm going to have an existential crisis about this. But yes, I obviously ordered a sandwich. This might be an unpopular opinion but I highly favour the "served fresh" sandwiches at Pals by a lot. The BLT is the best in the entire city, I swear. The Burrata is completely insane - I've never seen a stack of prosciutto so high.

The sandwiches were good, the service was perfect, the ambiance was sandwich restaurant. Clean,…read moreSwedish style decor. Our server seemed too charismatic to be just a server and seemed to enjoy the job. She was careful to ask relevant questions when I requested gf bread. All positive things! It just wasn't a GREAT sandwich. Perfectly acceptable, and I might even visit again if I worked in the same building or lived on the same block. But it isn't something I'll ever travel for again. The bread was soft and fresh, but it lacked any chewiness or texture, and was too thick. The spread was good, but there wasn't much of it, and what was there got lost in the thickness of bread and didn't really come through in the flavour profile. There was a lot of meat, but it was the same type of basic deli meat as you would pick up on sale at the grocery store deli counter. All in, there wasn't anything in the sandwich that popped or excited the tastebuds. It was just.. a big sandwich. To make it an even better sandwich, I would have preferred a thinner bread with a chewier crust so it didn't dominate the sandwich so much. That would have also allowed the spread to come through more, which could also be helped by putting a little more of it on. Lastly, the sandwiches could benefit from a trick from italian american delis use: oil and vinegar. A drizzle of oil and red wine vinegar would bring everything together and really make the flavours explode so the sandwich is less boring bread, and more yum. Sliced pepponcinis or pickles would also help add some bite. Worth a try if you're just looking for a basic stomach filling lunch and are super close, but there are definitely better sandwich shops in town if you wan't more than just a big version of the sandwich your mom used to pack in your ... lunchbox.
