    Gluten free cupcakes and muffins

Creative gluten free treats with lower sugar content, perfect for those of us who prefer our baking on the less sweet side. My go to is the Pumpkin Turmeric Spice Muffin made with molasses to give the moisture that gluten free baking often lacks. Many of their treats are vegan also which means a tasty coconut flavour added as the oil, but does affect the icing flavour (no dairy means it is not as creamy). If you are adapted to vegan baking, the icing is excellent! They also have a full espresso bar, but probably most famous for their Cafe Fredo, which is essentially a bougie iced cap. There is no drip coffee in the afternoons so be ready for an americano at that time of day if that's your go to. I tried the Vanilla Nitro coffee for the first time today, which might be my new favourite! In keeping with the low sugar theme, it provides delicious flavour without the sweetness overhaul. It rivals my favourite S***bucks drink, which is a salted caramel cold brew no syrup. Of note, this is a small, female-owned local business you will feel good about supporting. They were one of the only places to adopt clear masks during the pandemic to help those with hearing difficulties. Huge shoutout for making their communication more accessible! Overall, definitely a place for celiacs to make their way out to while in Edmonton, and a tasty coffee shop for celiacs & gluten eaters alike.

I LOVE A CAFE! There is something so cozy and comforting about visiting a cafe and enjoying a delicious fancy coffee. It's one of my favourite things. So when I saw that the Edmonton Journal named Crum Coffee Bar (a cafe I'd never tried) as Favourite Coffee Shop 2022... I had to visit! I'd driven by this coffee shop one million times due to their prominent Empire Park location right on Calgary Trail but for some reason I had never stopped in. This all changed on a sunny Tuesday morning, eager to find out what they're all about. The space itself is much nicer than I expected! The room is gleaming, right down to the beautiful floors. There's a lot of white tile and brick playing with the contrast of black chalk board walls. The cafe feels urban and laid back. There was a lot more personality in this shop than I ever would have guessed. Open since 2017, Crum is owned and operated by two sisters, Mila and Christine. Their vibe is all over the place, right down to Mila's very distinctive abstract art. It's really cool to see two women adding such care to their business and really making it something unique and special. The beverage menu was interesting to me because they offered more than just the usuals. I know that there are many people who prefer straight-up coffee. The Americano or drip coffee people. I am not those people. I require a latte at the very least with a strong preference toward "fancy coffee." Crum had me covered. Their mocha sounds wonderful, the lavender London fog caught my attention, and the matcha blossom latte seems really special. And don't get me started on the salted caramel mocha (which is a feature drink) because it sounds to die for and I almost bought two drinks because of it. My mind was made up and I ordered the Dirty Chai Latte (Our most popular hot drink. Chai latte, made with a double shot of espresso - $5.85 for small). I simply had to get the dirty chai because it's the cafe's most popular drink! In the past, I haven't been a fan of a dirty chai because somehow the presence of coffee would always ruin the chai experience for me. However, I was willing to give it another shot, especially for a version that lots of people seem to like. The friendly staff member made my beverage (I think it was Mila) and I found a seat by the window to drink it. I was so surprised by this dirty chai and by how much I enjoyed it! The chai and the coffee were in perfect balance, each complimenting the other instead of one being too overpowering. The chai brought the warm spices that it is so known for and the coffee added the desired hit of caffeine. The entire mixture was creamy and delicious! This was literally the first time that I have ever been happy with a dirty chai latte and now I'm questioning everything. Another drink that sounds really good is the exclusive Caffè Freddo, which is a cold drink. (It's winter, so I'm more into hot beverages at the moment.) It sounds a lot like the frozen crema coffees that you can sometimes find in Italian cafes. I need to try this as well. I also got some snacks! My eyes landed on the freshly baked Chocolate Pretzel pretty much immediately and I needed it. It looked really unique. Crum is also pretty proud to offer a whole lineup of gluten-free, vegan, and paleo items. The CRUM Cookie falls into this category and I wanted to experience it based on the self-titled signature cookie of it all. Both of these items were great and way better than I would have expected. The pretzel, flaky pastry dough with chocolate swirled into the twisted pretzel and topped with crushed hazelnuts and coarse salt, was definitely more danish-like and less like an actual pretzel. (Other than the shape.) I'd never seen anything quite like this and I absolutely loved it. The pastry was buttery and fresh while the chocolate was almost custard-like. Plus hazelnuts on top?? I will be craving this sweet treat. The cookie, almond butter chocolate chip, was delicious as well. The use of almond butter in a cookie was such a departure from the typical peanut butter and I liked how decadent it made the cookie taste. (They also make a peanut butter cookie and I'm sure that it's great too!) The chunks of chocolate were never lost and I loved that it wasn't too sweet. I didn't want to leave a single crum(b) behind! I ended my visit at Crum feeling impressed, pleasantly surprised, and eager to return. There's so much more that I want to order! I can't believe that they've been sitting there all of this time and I hadn't tried them sooner. Add Crum Coffee Bar to your cafe roster and visit them immediately if you haven't already. This not-so-hidden gem is serving delicious drinks, fresh bakery items, and the vibe is super cool... Need I say more?

Food in the Nud - at crum. They were stored separately and covered. A nice option to have but thought they would have more.

When we got to the parking lot it was not easy to find a spot. This centre is busy at 11:19 am. The parking is very tight. Once we got in the door, we did not feel the ambiance that others have mentioned. It was quite messy with stock on the floor. I think they were gift baskets in the process of being curated. Regardless, we looked around and there were not many baked goods for my gluten eating husband but he could order a sandwich. I could get one of two muffins or a selection of cookies. These were baked off site at Food in the Nud. A great bakery - so I knew my muffin would be tasty. No butter or a warm up was offered. We did get plates when we said we would stay. We then went to order our drinks. I have celiac so I was trying to assure my drink was prepared safely. There was a language barrier at first but then the younger lady stepped in. She was outright rude. Snapping at me just tell me what you want. I was quite stunned. It wasn't even busy. I should have walked out. I didn't. I instead sat at the uncomfortable stools looking out at the parking lot. And ate my muffin in silence. My husband went back up and explained what was needed. Just clean the want if you use oat milk as many contain gluten. I have no idea if the latte is okay. I am not thrilled to try it. This place is pricey. For not really feeling anything good about it. I will not be back. One should not feel horrible for just trying to ask if they could do my beverage. If they felt they couldn't I would have ordered an ice tea. Ugh - sadness at my rare coffee date. Good things?? The counters were clean. My husband loved his grinch nog. He thought it pretty good!

While the staff here was lovely, our drinks were horrible. The seating in here was atrocious. Only bar stools? Really? It was uncomfortable. Not to mention the whole place is not wheelchair friendly one bit. No normal hight tables. I think crum needs to rethink their design.

    Dirty Chai Latte

Three words: Dirty Chai Latte; try it and thank me later! I'm obsessed. I actually haven't had anything here I didn't like. Their cafe Freddo is amazing too. Not a lot of seating other than bar stools. It seems like they're really passionate about what they do. They recommended a seasonal strawberry mocha one time when I asked for recommendations, which was not one I normally would try, but it also was delicious.

    The inside order counter.

I just stopped in for a coffee hoping to sit inside but they told me that their tables won't be open until September. We paused and decided to order anyway. I ordered a large drip coffee and a jalapeno scone. With tax and tip that was basically $10.00. The coffee was delicious. It tasted just like Ace Coffee Roasters so I wonder if that's where it comes from. It's full bodied and frothy without being strong. Superb. The jalapeno scone was quite tasty. The location is handy if you're driving as it's on the west side of Calgary Trail just north of the Whitemud. I'm going to come back to Crum but for me eating in, Covid-19 notwithstanding, is part of the experience so I'll wait until September. It should be quite nice when the seating is open as it seemed very bright and comfortable inside (although I forgot to ask about WiFi). Until then you can sit on the patio or get takeout.

Little bit of heaven in a muffin

Was in the area craving my mid afternoon snack so thought I would check this place out. Pleasantly surprised to discover that they carry my favourite healthy treats from Food in the Nud- a healthy bakery that has vegan/ paleo etc goodies. Purchased the banana chocolate muffin and a Lavender/Earl grey tea latte. It's delicious, but was hoping this was a healthier pick only to discover the lavender syrup seems to be artificial and doesn't seem to have any real lavender in it, sadly. Staff were efficient and pleasant. Lots or parking, nice to see outdoor seating, and a good bit of seating indoors as well. A big selection of treats even though I came in mid afternoon.

    Basic (but delicious) vanilla latte.

I was very excited to come to this place. I am always looking for new cafes to try out, and this one happens to be in the south side as well! I really enjoyed the lively atmosphere that was provided at Crum. When people came in, the owners were chatting up their customers, there were a lot of laughs and conversations that were held. When I went, the coffee was great. It was smooth and not too strong. I got myself a vanilla latte. Every sip I took was just delicious. I loved the flavour of the bean, the slight sweetness of the vanilla syrup and even the basic latte art. The service was also very pleasant as well. When asking for recommendations, the owner was able to tell me which ones were the most popular and ones she thought tasted the best, especially when warmed up. She had a very welcoming and genuine smile, which is not that common to see around. The only downside to this location is that there are no plug ins. So if you are planning on studying, make sure you come fully charged! Overall, I would come here again for a meeting or a hang out spot.

    Packaged perfectly!

My co-workers and I have been ordering from CRUM quiet frequently over the past couple months. CRUM is our preferred coffee shop to order through on skip the dishes for several reasons. Not only are their drinks delicious but they really have nailed down how to package an order for delivery. The first time we ordered a large drink order for several people, we were worried that the drinks might spill on the way. CRUM packages everything so perfectly to prevent this from happening. They fold up straws to act as stoppers so that the drinks don't spill.... genius! Once we ordered mostly hot drinks and only one cold drink. The people at CRUM were thoughtful enough to package the hot drinks together and the cold drink separately. So far, I've tried the Dirty Chai (chai latte with espresso), Americano and Lavender Earl Grey Latte from CRUM. They've all been amazing. My favorite probably is the Dirty Chai. My co-worker says that it's even better than Remedy's Chai...which is saying a lot. Ienjoyed the Lavender Earl Grey Latte, but I do wish that it had a bit more of a lavender flavor to it (I prefer strong florals). CRUM hasn't disappointed us yet and I know that we'll be ordering a lot more from them in the future!

    Caffe Freddo
    Dee L.

I work next to this place and me and my workmates frequent here... my go to is the Caffe Freddo. It's an icy, smooth, blended kick ya in the face coffee flavour beverage. I always get this drink. My coworkers have also had good things to say about the chai and the vanilla lattes. The people are always smiling and attentive. I will continue to be a regular here

In my (heavily biased) opinion Old Strathcona and Whyte Ave is the best part of the entire city. It…read moreprobably helps that I live nearby and have frequented this part of town practically every day of the combined fifteen years that I have called Edmonton home. The vibrant history of the area is one of Whyte Ave's defining features, each part of the streetscape telling its own story. One such example is the Hulbert block; a three-storey, brick clad, Edwardian commercial building that was built in 1912. On the street level of this building Edmontonians have been enjoying cozy cafe visits at Block 1912 (the cafe's name a tribute to the year that the building was built) since 1992. This cafe is one of the most notable spots on the avenue and their 33 year tenure makes them an iconic and reliable mainstay. Named Favourite Coffee Shop 2023 in the Edmonton Journal, it goes to show that even after this many years people seek out the familiar and comfortable spaces in the city. After all, Block 1912 really does feel a lot like going home. I have spent plenty of time at Block 1912 over the years and I have always been impressed by the immense amount of space that this cafe occupies. Full of time-weathered quirks, there is never any shortage of things to see and discover in this original-exposed-brick hideaway. Deep within the cafe the lighting dims as there are only windows at the very front of the space making natural light sparse. There are different levels of seating and mis-matched chairs. An entire nook is lined with shelves of books. I happen to know that there are secret drawers in various pieces of furniture that are filled with hundreds of notes, left by past patrons. Artists and musicians are encouraged to pitch their portfolios to the manager in order to be featured in the space - whether it be on the walls or to perform during one of the regular live music evenings. Visiting on a Saturday afternoon, I hadn't been to Block 1912 in a while and was interested in exploring everything that their menu has to offer these days. And there's a lot! The counter for ordering is about halfway into the cafe and the glass case full of pastries is an immediate distraction. Did you know that they also make their own gelato?? Of course all sorts of coffee beverages are available but Block 1912 also serves alcohol. There's a full menu of sandwiches, small plates, and comfort food. The staff is friendly and happy to answer any questions. I wanted to order a coffee to stick with the cafe vibe... But I'm not a straight black coffee kind of girl. The Ganache Mocha ($8.75) caught my eye but then I saw the list of 46 (!!) flavoured syrups that there are to choose from! It's almost impossible to decide on only one and after much difficulty I selected Toasted Marshmallow as an add-on to my mocha. Seemed like flavours that would make a lot of sense together! (If you ever want to find out what a "pineberry" latte tastes like go to Block 1912 and let me know what happens.) I settled into a table right at the front of the restaurant so that I could enjoy the small amount of natural light that reaches the interior. Receiving my coffee, I have to say that they got the memo! I was impressed at how much my toasted marshmallow ganache mocha looked exactly the part - there were even mini marshmallows on top! Was it incredibly sweet? Yes. Was there even coffee in this? Who knows! But this warm beverage was what I had been hoping for. Chocolatey with a definite toasted marshmallow flavour, I was delighted that this drink felt like a specialty cafe creation. In the interest of having an entire lunch, I wanted to order something off of the sandwich menu. The Hot Italian Grill seems like the sandwich to get. But the Turkey Apple Brie Sandwich ($16.00) felt seasonally appropriate and I picked that one. A soup or salad is also included, turning this dish into a meal. There were two daily soups available and the Vegetable Beetroot Soup also seemed to match the falltime vibe. I liked that the bread was a lot more interesting than a plain white or brown type. Instead, this bread was studded with what appeared to be cranberries - an ideal match for a turkey sandwich! The brie cheese was gooey and melty. I barely noticed the apples. It was a decently good sandwich but there wasn't a whole lot of filling and I could have easily made something like this at home. I liked the flavour combination though. The soup was warm and flavourful with a fairly fine dice of veggies within. I was expecting a more prominent beet component (maybe not a full borscht but somewhat closer to that) and I'm not sure if I noted the beets at all. If there was any, they were chopped very small and completely mixed in with the other vegetables. I also had to try the Herb Crusted Chicken Pot Pie ($18.00) from the Comfort Food part of the menu. Who doesn't love a soul-warming comfort food on a chilly day? It was even raining! Also served with soup or salad, we decided to try a salad

It was upon heading back to our car on Whyte Avenue that out of the corner of my eye I noticed this intriguing stairway leading to some type of shop, hmmm , must explore! Adding even further to the intrigue was the sign .. "Nuttea Nut Mylk Tea". What is this? What could it be? Something vegan, dare I wonder Well, wondered I dared, and I'm glad that I'm the wondering daring type because, ... here we are Turns out this charming little shop has a variety of mylks and teas, the mylks in a wonderful variety of flavors such as Jasmine Green Nut Mylk Tea, Mango Nut Mylk, Avocado Nut Mylk, Matcha with Nut Cream, and a large assortment of other delicious sounding flavors, everything 100% vegan using a variety of 5 different nuts, macadamia, hazelnut, walnut, almond, and cashews. The cappuccino was delicious! I almost wanted to go back to ask what the secret was! It's possible that they milk with a higher percentage in fat or cream, which gave it a very nutty flavour. I'll definitely be coming back for a cappuccino the next time I'm in the area, as well as looking forward to trying their affogato and gelato when the weather is warmer.

We got a couple of things: an Almond Croissant, Bulgogi Poutine, a Lavender London Fog with oat milk, and a Peppermint Mocha with oat milk. My Almond Croissant was okay. I know almond croissants are made with leftover pastries, but there was no texture at all. It just fell flat, and lookswise it was physically flat as well lol. It was alright. I wouldn't get the almond croissant again. The Bulgogi Poutine was pretty good. The fries were delicious and crispy. The sauce on top of the fries was slightly sweet, salty, and savory. For me, the bulgogi could've been more flavorful and it didn't taste fresh but I liked the overall dish. Lastly, the Peppermint Mocha was alright. It wasn't spectacular. And I felt the same way about my Lavender London Fog with oat milk. I wish there was more depth in my drink. I think the tea could've been steeped a little longer. Flavor was there in my drink, but it wasn't strong enough. It was slightly disappointing since I've had amazing London Fogs before, and this one just wasn't up to par. Also my drink was slightly warm, not too far off from lukewarm. I feel like the price doesn't exactly correlate with quality for most things here. If we come back here, I'd be willing to try different things and pastries. But I don't think my rating would change much.
