    Mocha (5.00)

One of my secret obsessions is BLT sandwiches. (Except that it's not a secret because I talk about it all the time.) So simple! So classic! So when I heard that Lock Stock Coffee is known for their extra special BLT sandwich, I had to try it. They're also known to be a wonderful cafe - Avenue Magazine award them Best Cafe 2020. What's not to love about that? I was excited to head Downtown to check them out and to try all of the things. You'll find Lock Stock right on Jasper Ave, right in the heart of the downtown core. In fact, they're two businesses in one. Cafe by day as Lock Stock Coffee and bar by night as Red Star Pub. This type of arrangement is a bit of a trend these days and you'll find these types of businesses more and more. It makes sense. Why not maximize the space and earning potential? You enter the cafe by going down the stairs to the bottom portion of the building. Inside, you are met with a moody room that you can certainly picture in the nighttime hours as a pub - complete with a well-stocked bar. However, the space doubles as a lovely cafe quite well. The walls are brightened up with white subway tile and the small cafe "window" is complete with a glass case full of baking. The rest of the room is the epitome of dark wood and exposed brick. However, I did also see some flashy white marble here and there. The vibe makes you feel like this place is a cool underground secret. You feel hip coming here. The first thing that I was going to do is order a coffee, of course. I'm a big fan of the Mocha ($5.00) so I went straight for that. Lock Stock uses coffee from Ace Coffee Roasters, a roaster hailing from right here in Edmonton. This was a good mocha! The coffee itself wasn't too strong, however I wished that the chocolate flavour had been a little bit more pronounced and playful. Not the best mocha that I've ever had, but certainly not the worst. A decent coffee beverage. There are a surprising amount of food offerings available; from English Muffin Sandwiches to Focaccia Sandwiches. They also do Biscuit Sandwiches on the weekend. All of these breads are completely housemade which makes them extra special and wonderful. There are also options that range from frittatas, tartines, and quiche, so there are quite a lot of things to try. Of course I went straight for the Lock Stock BLT Focaccia Sandwich (Pembina bacon, house-made tomato jam, white cheddar, lemon-dijon mayo, and arugula. Served on our house-made focaccia - $12.00), however they have an english muffin version as well. Not quite a straight-up traditional BLT, I loved the direction that they took this version into. The bacon was nice and crispy (so important!) and the arugula was fresh. I thought that the use of tomato jam was such an interesting way to incorporate the tomato component and it added a delicate sweetness. The huge star was the focaccia bread, which was pure magic. This bread was pillowy soft with a glorious chew and a beautiful crumb. The outside was beautifully caramelized adding some wonderful texture. I'm assuming that any sandwich that they make on this focaccia is pretty special (they do four types) because the bread is just that good. However, this BLT sandwich truly is "the one." Wanting to try something completely different, I also ordered the Lox & Egg English Muffin Sandwich (House-cured citrus lox, caramelized onions, and fresh dill. Served on our house-made toasted english muffin - $8.50). I was mostly curious about the english muffin because you don't find housemade versions of them all that often. This sandwich packs a very dill-flavoured punch, which makes sense because salmon and dill are such good friends. The lox itself was very nice and somewhat unexpected. This is not your grocery store package of smoked salmon. Instead, this lox is thick-sliced and tastes very fresh. It's more like eating a beautiful, tender slice of smoky salmon and less like the typical kind that you'll find anywhere. The whole thing is gooey and wonderful. The english muffin was extra special, so much better than store-bought. Lastly, I'd heard that the bakery items at Lock Stock are very good and they seem to specialize in making Kouign Amann ($3.75). (Although all of the items in the pastry case looked beautiful.) Layers and layers of light, buttery dough, filled with sugar. The thing about kouign amann that makes it special is what happens to the sugar. Much of it becomes so caramelized that it creates a glass not unlike that of a crème brûlée. The warm layers of pasty were crispy on the outside but soft on the inside, intermingling with the sugary shards throughout. An excellent example of this classic treat. The food offerings at Lock Stock Coffee are very good. They have positioned themselves above the rest by literally making everything in-house and the quality achieved in doing so is extremely evident. If you're ever in the need of a quick hand-held breakfast, I can think of no better place.

English muffin at Lock Stock Coffee. Delish!!!!

What a gem! So excited to try the food experiences now that we live downtown. This place was recommended in top 100 things to eat in Edm. We're making our way down this list. Let's start with the coffee. Oh my god! It is so amazing. Fresh and so smooth! Had the latte. For breakfast we had the egg and bacon English muffin. Highly recommend. The English muffin was so fresh. Melted in our mouths. We will definitely be back

What a fantastic concept. Coffee shop during the day, bar at night hidden away steps down from ground level. I was concerned about two things prior to my visit - 1) Will it smell like a bar? NOPE and 2) Are there plugs for my computer? YES All drinks are espresso based, so no pour over or pre-made coffee here. Good news is that means fresh espresso for all!

Cute little coffee shop that is attached or part of Red Star. They do the switch over in the afternoon between 3 and 4pm. Since it is part of Red Star it carries that cute pub/tavern feel that radiates a low key and chill atmosphere. The staff were friendly and it almost feels like a hidden off gem cause it's not super noticeable from the street and you have to go down the stairs to get to the shop. I was pleasantly surprised by their latte with almond milk (probably one of the best lattes i have had in a long time) and the peanut butter cookie was tasty too. I think the only downside, and likely because it was originally a pub/tavern first, is that there is a lack of plug ins that we would normally be accustomed to in a standard coffee shop. Still worth a visit though.

I wish they were open longer during the week! I love this space and the cozy atmosphere and the coffee is pretty amazing too. I have tried the cappuccino and lattes here with regular and almond milk and they were delicious. i haven't tried the baked goods yet, but they looks quite yummy as well. The staff is super friendly and welcoming and their service is quick. I like the informal and relaxing atmosphere of this place and always spend a decent amount of time reading or catching up with some friends here. I know that they can't be open longer as it turns into the Red Star pub in the evenings, but I would have totally appreciated if they were open till 6 for a nice evening cuppa, sigh.. I can dream.

This is one of our favourite downtown coffee shops. It's mostly because of the wonderful biscuit sandwiches that aren't even that expensive. They are delicious. Today we even spotted Councilor Scott McKeen there. This place changes to Red Star Pub at night. It's right off Jasper Ave. I recommend it.

Squished in between Red Star and The Bower on Jasper Ave, you'll find Lock Stock Coffee. It's a teeny, tiny coffee stop with friendly staff and perfect cups of tea and coffee. At first, I thought it was a grab a coffee and go kind of place. Turns out there is a door through to the closed bar Red Star, so you can sit in there and enjoy your beverage. It's nice they make use of that space during the day. I love the open windows and watching people walking by. There are baked goods available but I was all about the tea. The staff were so nice and chatty, it makes me want to spend more time there. No wifi though so it's not ideal for working. But nice to meet a pal for a catch up if you find yourself downtown.

Strawberry buttermilk loaf and cheddar herb biscuit. Made fresh in house.

Downtown YEG is so lucky to have all these great coffee shops popping up! Lock Stock is literally a hole in the ground, right between 105st and 106st, where the Red Star pub is. I love how the space is decorated. It's small, but definitely enough room to sit and enjoy your coffee if you so choose. They also have truly amazing pastries here... rosemary bacon cheddar muffin, strawberry buttermilk loaf, cookies, biscuits. This is just another great option for some delicious coffee sans sugar in downtown YEG, so check it out.

Stumbled upon this place on a lazy morning that I wanted delicious food with minimal effort. Enter Lock Stock! Their breakfast sandwiches are amazing. I had the chorizo one and there was just so much flavour compacted into it! It's such a cool place where you can just sit and people watch while enjoying a great cup of coffee. The staff was super friendly too. Such a hidden gem but definitely worth it!

I honestly do love coming to lock stock coffee! Parking might be a bit of an issue but if you can find parking and pay for it south of Jasper than it can be a bit less. They only have kougin amans on the weekends and unfortunately they are not open Sundays. Pretty much every one of their breakfast Sammies are delish! They are made with a cheddar & chive biscuit! Two of them!!! The coffee that they serve is roasted by ACE. It's a neat little place to work as well. It can get busy right around 11:30 or 12pm but then is less busy after. However, you then run the risk of missing out on those kougin amans!

    Vicki M.

I can only comment on all their baked goods and breakfast sandwiches which are all made in-house. For baked goods, I've tried their Malva Pudding Cakes, the Kougin Amans & Carrot Cake Bites. All were executed well. I've also tried one of their breakfast sandwiches with bacon, egg, arugula on a house made biscuit and it was incredible! One star deducted because I find service from the counter to be succinct and not overly friendly. As well, price point seems a bit steep for some of their baked goods (compared to portion sizes) in my opinion. But still highly recommended.

    Bagel + Lox
    Jeff C.

Really awesome shop. Lots of natural lighting (even though it's below ground) - really richly appointed, dark-stained wood everywhere. Has the vibe of a study in a mansion, or the lobby of a fancy old hotel. The staff was friendly and warm. The coffee (from ACE roasters) was very good. I had the Bagel + Lox. Best I've had outside of Montreal & my lovely lady tried their version of the BLT which I can only assume was delicious since I was not offered a bite! This is a really cool place to check out on a weekend morning, to sit, and chat and enjoy a cup.

Cute little coffee shop! Shares space with Red Star next door. Very reasonable prices for their drinks and a nice small selection of pastries. Def work checking out. Only downfall is that you need to pay for street parking even on a Saturday. Otherwise, a great hipster coffee shop tucked away on jasper ave.

Oh. Em. Squeal!!!!!…read more First off, mad props to my friend for introducing me to this charming new addition to the coffee scene. Stop Gap opened just under a month ago in Oliver. They describe themselves as a temporary (stop gap) means to filling a need - coffee - served with an intentional and caring heart. Caleb Kam, the owner, is warm and inviting. He definitely knows his coffee. You may know him from his former life at Brown Butter Cafe. Caleb focuses on Canadian, fresh, and local! I spotted Ace and Candid today (Edmonton gems). The clientele were sweet and happy to offer up their faves! Nathan, a regular, told me Caleb is the go to for the best pour over in town. I opted for a Dirty Chai - made to perfection and my friend had a oat milk chai complete with milk art adorning the top. Both beverages were perfection. Coffee can be consumed in house complete with adorable coasters (el gato was my fave naturally, meow) or taken to go. For seating, there is a cute bench against the window front and a side room available if not booked. Caleb also had fresh donuts from Fuzion in Chinatown. My friend and I shared the cake and Cinnamon bun donut today. Sooo ridiculously good. Be sure to check Fuzion out online - they don't have a storefront so you will need to order in advance if you are looking to up your donut game at your next office meeting. I seriously can't wait to come back here again! Oh and they also have a beautiful meeting space available for rent on the main floor in case you want to bring your next staff meeting to the best coffee in town! Such a true pleasure meeting you today, Caleb! Stop Gap is exactly what YEG needs!

Food was amazing! The rice was so fluffy! Appreciated all the raw sliced onions and the grilled tomatoes (however I could have used less char on them). They gave us two dips to try with pita bread - Zeytoon Parvardeh Brined olives mixed with crushed walnuts and rich pomegranate molasses, and Mast - o - Moosir - Creamy yogurt blended with shallots and garnished with dried mint. Both were so amazing and full of flavour. Our platter also came with pickled...I want to say cabbage which was so delicious with the meat. The meat itself was well cooked and full of favour. I preferred the beef to the chicken but both were delicious. I really wanted to try the saffron ice cream, which was a great end of the meal paired with some tea. The ice cream itself wasn't so sweet which I really appreciated. Our server was lovely and friendly and super helpful. It looses a star because it was cold - both in esthetics and in temperature.
