I've had Swiss a couple times now as it's close to my work and everyone raves about it. It's okay. I feel as though their staff doesn't care. They aren't very welcoming and don't seem engaged. Once they ignored my changes which is frustrating when buying a 15 dollar donair. Today I went in and paid a high 5 dollars for onion rings and they were horrible, I had two and couldn't do it anymore. Wouldn't recommend, especially with the portion size. Everyone says this is the best donair place in edmonton, finally tried it and it was very good. Good size (not the biggest jumbo donair I've ever had) but still a good size. Sauce to meat ratio was excellent, the fries are outstanding as well. Only thing I didn't like was the temperature of it. The humble donair has a bit of an interesting history. Invented in the 70s in Halifax, of all places, its creator took a Greek-style gyro and modified the recipe to be more appealing to a Canadian audience. The traditional pork and lamb recipe was replaced with spiced ground beef. A Lebanese flatbread is used, and the most distinct ingredient of all is the invention of a sweet donair sauce. This sauce is made with condensed milk, vinegar, sugar, and garlic. A whole new handheld wrap was born and called a "donair." As you can imagine, Halifax is crazy about them (the place to get one is King Donair), being the place that they were first created. But there is one other city in Canada where donairs are a big deal; Edmonton. This is likely due to the large amount of Maritime natives who travel to Alberta to work in the oil and gas industry. Of course you can find the donair in other Canadian cities as well, but it's a really noticeable culinary item in both Halifax and Edmonton, moreso than anywhere else. VUE Weekly named Swiss Donair the #1 Best Donair 2018 and if they're doing the best version in the whole city, I'm trying it. Visiting on a Saturday evening, the small fast-food style shop was busy. They had a ton of staff working, furiously rolling wraps. The foot traffic of customers coming in to grab their dinner was continuous. Swiss Donair is located quite far off the beaten path for me, all the way up in Evansdale. (It's north. Real north.) But I certainly do not mind visiting new parts of the city to eat the best things. I'm not exactly sure why they've decided to call themselves "Swiss" Donair because I really don't think that there's anything Swiss about it, but I digress. There isn't very much of note when it comes to the interior of the restaurant. It's very much a fast food-style establishment located in a strip mall (and some of the best food comes out of these exact types of places). They have a few tables should you prefer to eat inside, however a donair is an extremely portable item. As someone who spent their early 20s frequenting the Edmonton club scene, the donair was a quintessential post-bar food. The first thing that I did upon entering the restaurant was turn to the refrigerator section in order to seek out the most unique and foreign beverage. I was in luck! They carry bottles of Mirinda ($2.50), a carbonated drink that originates from Spain. This is exactly what I'm talking about. This pop beverage is huge in Arabic countries, making it an ideal match for the food. It tastes like orange juice from concentrate except carbonated. It was actually pretty good! Sweet and enjoyable. I like the tall, skinny bottle too. Next is the business of the donair. Swiss Donair has options. Not only do they make the traditional beef style, but they also do chicken and "mix" (which I can only assume is a combination of both beef and chicken?). They even offer other foods entirely, such as burgers, falafels, and chicken strips. However, for me it was going to be a straight-up Beef Donair ($9.00 for regular size) with cheese. The donairs come in several sizes at Swiss Donair; kids, regular, super, and jumbo. I kinda want to see the insanity that is a jumbo donair. Upon ordering, you will be asked if you want all of the toppings. These include; tomato, lettuce, onion, and sweet sauce. Generally you should say "yes" to all of these toppings because that's the right way to eat a donair. The cheese used is a thin white slice of cheese that they lay on top of the flatbread before loading in the rest of the toppings. The whole thing gets rolled into a very familiar wrap formation and you're ready to eat! In terms of the donairs that I have eaten in the past, this one was very good and probably one of the best. The beef donair meat was plentiful and very flavourful with a nice spicy kick. There's something about the texture of donair meat, shaved off of the turning spit, that is quite appealing. I liked the tomato, lettuce and onion because they were fresh and added a bit of a crunch. I found that the cheese was almost unnoticeable but I did taste it a little bit here and there. And the flatbread wrap was very soft and warm. But let's talk about the sweet sauce for a second. Swiss Donair has literal vats of sweet sauce lining the walls. This is the sauce that makes a donair what it is and it can be a little bit strange at first. For me, I've always loved having gyro meat with a classic tzatziki sauce. That is not what this is. If you go in wanting that, you will not be pleased. This is something all its own and quite special in its own right. Eating a donair is a messy endeavour, yet extremely satisfying. It feels like a classic Edmonton food and that's what I love about it. Is there a Donair Poutine ($10.00 for regular) on the menu? Yes, there is. My one criticism is that this poutine is made with shredded cheese as opposed to cheese curds. But regardless, I was not angry at this poutine situation at all. The read more

After hearing many rave reviews about this place, I figured I'd give them a try. Note: I ordered on SkipTheDishes, so my experience may be different. I won't rate the temperature of the food, or presentation. First off, the fries were perfectly crispy, and seasoned quite well! However, they were quite salty. The Donair I got was massive, excellent beef taste, and the sauces were all a great match! Would have liked to see more vegetables in the Donair, but this doesn't factor in the review. I eat at Swiss donair ONCE A WEEK. I spend 48 to 53 each time. My sons BIRTHDAY today and he was Craving a Donair poutine. So I ordered 2. Large donair poutine 1. Donair salad. 1. Jumbo Donair and ONLY got a large donair. I even said to my wife they are going to screw up my order just wait and see. I called to let them know, because I live 20 mins from that location. NO answer 3 times I called. NOT EVEN BUSY AT THAT TIME... I watched one of the cooks use his bare hands to take fry's out of each donair poutine. DIDN'T EVEN HAVE GLOVES ON. I know this might sound ridiculous but this was my very first time trying out Swiss Donair. What's my excuse? I dunno brah, I dunnno. I made it out for lunch on a Friday and the place was packed with high school kidlets. Always a good sign, especially when most of them were Lebanese - always follow the people in the know and you can't go wrong. I already knew what I wanted so I ordered and waited patiently while my mouth and stomach growled in anticipation. I had the: - Regular chicken donair combo (#6) ($12.00) and substituted for onion rings ($1.00 extra) - I was pleasantly surprised by how good the donair was. Good amount of chicken, perfect amount of garlic sauce (not doused like other places) and the pita was nicely warmed. Onion rings were crisp and lightly battered. I was debating whether to order a regular vs. jumbo donair - verdict = depends on how hungry you are. The regular is enough to fill you without being overly stuffed (aka. you can still do work when you get back to the office). I noticed that there is another donair shop, Top Donair, that is literally right beside them. Will have to try them next as a comparison! The only reason why this place doesn't get five stars is because of the parking lot chaos. The donairs are juicy, massive, tasty and reasonably priced. Favourite order is Super Donair with meat, cheese, onions and hot peppers, meat well done and extra sauce on the side. No sauce in Donair reason...(Life hack trick) this way if you don't eat all of it you can always save it for later without it becoming soggy. Staff is friendly and courteous, unfortunately never ending construction on the roof. Either way love this place read more

This is hands down the best Chicken donair. I keep going back with the intent to get beef which I've heard is amazing but I've been here probably 20 times and always go for the chicken. The staff is super helpful and friendly. Order is always piping hot and fresh to order. And even if I get it to go the meal is still just as delicious at home. So firstly I'd like to say, as usual, if I could Frankenstein a bunch of donairs together I would. I wiiiish I could. This is especially one of those time because overall their donairs are not bad - but they certainly are not the best. The best part of the donair is the meat and depending on your taste - the sweet sauce. The sweet sauce is very light which is a good and a bad thing - on one hand you have a lesser chance of feeling sick but on the other hand it makes the donair less flavorful than others. The other thing I was sad about was the ratio of meat to veggie which was almost non existent. There was some shredded lettuce but onion and tomato were basically not there sadly. I wasn't disappointed or dissatisfied with the donair but if I don't know if this would be in my top choices. My boyfriend tried their large doniar poutine which, by the way, is ginormous - for him that's pretty awesome because he has quote the appetite, like myself. The only odd thing about it was the fact that the poutine is in a literal soup - never had that before but apparently it was slightly unappetizing. The soup itself was good but soggy fries inside of it is probably not the best idea if you're looking for a classic poutine feel. Overall though I didn't hate it. Small mom and pop family run business in a small strip mall on the north end of the city. Ask any local northside local and they will rave about this place. As a southsider and love for donairs, they were right. Small seating area but fast service. You walk in and choose your donair, with their famous garlic sauce if you want an extra kick to it. Portions are large, so if your not a big eater, even the kids size is reasonable and filling. Tables with chairs are available and two tv screens if you choose to stay. We sat down at the back, area is clean and the traffic in and out of the restaurant was nonstop. They even have take out and delivery. Other items on the menu but you go there fore the donair! All running through to bottom. Garlic sauce...really good! Pita was in keeping with everywhere else. I certainly wasn't hard pressed to stay together as the whole package wasn't too big. Meet...decently seasoned and fairly juicy. Veggies fresh and well presented. All in all...pretty good. As per my usual question... Yes. Yes I would be happy having Swiss as my local shop. This was my third visit here and found prices climbing and getting too pricey for what you get. Orders of onion rings and fries rather small. I went to Swiss Donair for my first time after hearing raving reviews about how good it is and overall it wasn't bad. I ordered a regular beef donair with cheese. It was about $9 which is standard. The sweet sauce was barely noticeable which was disappointing as it's usually my favorite part of a donair. The meat was thinly cut and well seasoned. It was different but still tasty. The veggies were very light and almost non-existent. Personally I prefer a more equal ratio of veggies to meat but for many what they offer might be perfect! The donair was wrapped nicely and eating the donair was surprisingly not messy for 90% of it! However, the end of the donair was all soggy from all the liquid so I ended up throwing it away. This was a bit disappointing. There was plenty of parking, the building was easy to find and the staff were quick and friendly. There were a few tables inside but for the most part it appears to be a take-out style business. The building seemed fairly clean and busy with skip the dishes couriers. I would say it's ine of the better donair places in Edmonton based on the overall experience I had.
