We adventured to this burger spot because we heard they were offering free kids meals for the month of October, the caveat was that you had to purchase a regular meal for each kids meal. But we have 2 kids and 2 adults so it worked out for us! The kids menu items are a hot dog, a cheeseburger or Mac and cheese. All the portions for the kids looked really big which I appreciated. My boys are eaters and it was nice to see that they got just as many French fries on their plate as an adult portion. And PS the garlic fries are amazing!!! I'm so happy we got 3 orders of the garlic fries and I was curious and tried the animal fries as well- they were different...tasty but definitely a unique taste. The closest I can describe it is cheese wiz and mustard and caramelized onions. Very potent, I saw they have an Animal burger which probably uses that same mixture combo. Animal fries cost an extra $4 so for the extra cost I would probably just go with the garlic fries every time because they don't have an extra cost. I ordered the most popular Bacon Pepper Smash ($21 single $25 double) and really enjoyed the flavor and the price was on point. Smash sauce, pickled peppers, bacon, American cheddar, iceberg. The single was definitely enough for myself but with the thinner patties I could see why some people order the double. Hubby had the Inferno ($21 single $25 double) Inferno sauce, pickled peppers, crispy fried onions, American Swiss, iceberg. The sauce was spicy! Good but spicy! And it kind of overpowered the whole thing. Parking down the side street was a bit of a walk but not terrible and right beside this place is a cool looking liquor store and Kind Ice Cream across the road. You've likely been living under a rock if you haven't at least somewhat noticed the smash burger craze. What's a smash burger? Well, they're exactly what they sound like: Burgers that have been smashed onto a hot griddle or skillet, sizzled until deeply browned, and cloaked with melted cheese. This smashing technique has obviously been around for a while but was further popularized by the Smashburger chain which was founded in Denver in 2007 (we have two of these restaurants; one in Sherwood Park and one in St. Albert). Beyond chains, Edmonton has several great options to indulge in this specific type of hamburger and I would be remiss if I didn't mention Flat Boy Burgers, a personal favourite, as a part of this conversation. The main difference of a smash burger compared to a "normal" burger is that the flattened patties are extra thin with crispy edges and a great sear. They're full of that good, good brown flavour. Fox Burger is one of the top restaurants in the city to experience an amazing non-chain version of this burger and now with three locations and a food truck, they clearly know what's up. Their original Highlands location was also awarded Favourite Patio on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2024 list. Sadly for me, my visit happened on a Saturday evening in the dead of winter so a magical patio experience was not in the cards. However, the restaurant does boast a gorgeous rooftop patio that I would love to visit in warmer months. Every time I visit Highlands I can't help but exclaim what an adorable part of the city it is. The main strip on 112th Avenue is small, yet full of amazing businesses and so much character. What a gem of a neighbourhood in our city! Fox Burger is located right in the thick of it, in the historical Gibbard Block building, an iconic landmark that was built in 1912. The restaurant is small yet decently spacious and simple in decor with wood paneling details and an antique-style ceiling. There are old-timey framed pictures of Edmonton scenes on the walls that fit in with the era of the building perfectly. Settling in at a comfortable table with bench seating, I looked at the cocktail menu and easily decided upon the Winter Sangria (Red wine, cointreau, sherry, lemon, demerara, cinnamon, fruit - $13.50) because I love anything that matches the season. I was brought a big wine glass full of all the fun bits that make sangria special. The drink was juicy and boozy. The winter theme was achieved by using warm spices, capturing that holiday-like feeling. Sangria is certainly viewed as a summertime beverage (I bet it's the ideal drink up on the patio) and I loved that they found a way to make it work in the winter as well. Of course there is also plenty of beer on the menu, because beer and burgers just makes sense! My co-diner tried the Aurora Key Lime Pie Sour by Rival Trade Brewing Co. and we were both impressed at how well they truly harnessed the key lime pie flavour in a way that was a total delight. There's also a secret boiler room-turned-bar in the basement that is only open on certain days - just in case you needed even cooler options for consuming alcohol. Before we dive into the burgers, I was surprised to find so many other menu items in terms of Small Bites and Shareables. The Small Bites section is fun, with Cool Ranch Jalapeño Poppers and Fried Pickled Green Tomatoes (Served with jalapeño ranch - $10.00) on offer. Intrigued, I chose the latter. Definitely fun and easy to share, I enjoyed the crispy batter and strong pickled flavour that was helped along by a generous coating of dill. After taking a bite I totally looked inside at the tomato itself to confirm that it was actually green - it was! The jalapeño ranch was more like an aioli but it served as a zippy dip to add even more flavour. The Sharables part of the menu impressed as well with the usual suspects such as Deep Fried Brussels Sprouts. But there was also Animal Fries (which I'd heard a lot about), and a Panzanella Salad (one of my top favourite salads). However, the decision was made when I saw the Bacon & Bleu Wedge Salad (Crispy bacon, grilled chicken, cherry tomatoes, bleu cheese, scallions, fresh herbs, lemon dill dressing - $23.00) - my even more top favourite salad. This salad is massive! (Which I suppose makes sense based on the price.) This could very easily be an entire meal for one person. Otherwise, sharing is a must and it's a great way to get some greens into the meal. I was surprised to find chicken on this salad - not a usual ingredient on a wedge. I got the impression that they were attempting to make this salad "more" and I was curious how it would taste. It was a big success! In fact, this salad might have been the highlight of the entire meal, which seems like a wild thing to say. Large quarters of crisp and fresh iceberg lettuce laid open like welcoming vessels, ready to grab all of the elements and flavours within its leaves. Too SALTY. The food presentation was good. The fries and poutine were also good. But then Blue Cheese Aioli Burger was so salty I couldn't continue after only a few bites. You could even see the salt on the beef patties. My husband and I opted to split a double burger because the prices of the burgers were high at around $20 each. I'm sorry but this was a horrible food experience. The servers were quite nice and apologetic. It wasn't their fault the food was salty. We waited for a while because we sat in the rooftop patio. They need a runner to bring food up from the kitchen. The location was nice for a sunny day. Unfortunately I will not be returning here. I do not recommend. The food needs to be tasted before sending it out. I'm not sure how many people are enduring the excessive saltiness and not mentioning it. I couldn't. Sat on the rooftop patio which was nice on a hot day. The food gets cooked on the ground floor then someone has to run it up 3+ floors to get to the patio. Because of the 3 storey staircase the kitchen will make a bunch of orders to make every trip up worth it. The service was pretty good, although the host seemed like she didn't want to put us on the patio cuz when we got up there three tables were empty. The servers on the patio were welcoming and attentive. There are challenges with serving on a patio that's 3-4 stories above the kitchen. They use hand radios to communicate with the restaurant. The burgers are pretty expensive. The menu has a burger and fries for $20-21 for single patty and $24-25 for a double patty. If you look at other smash burger joints Fox burger is at the high end of the pricing scale. When you charge this much for a burger you better get that right. The kitchen did NOT get it right. They over salted the smash pattys so much that we couldn't even eat our burger. I think I got to two bites before my tastebuds were on fire. Salt burning your customers palates is not a good business model. We initially tried to power through but it was clear that we couldn't even stomach it. The fries were standard frozen fries, probably bought from Sysco, with a bit of seasoning on it. They were salty as well but more manageable and appropriate levels. We went on a Tuesday and the place was busy but not full. Still recommended to get a reservation so that you can ensure you don't have to wait long for a table. The server was friendly and offered good suggestions for members of our party who had questions and were indecisive. The vibe was very chill and despite it being busy it didn't feel too loud as some places might feel. Very casual but in a good way. I settled on the animal smash burger with a side of poutine. The fries come as the seasoned garlic fries for this poutine and they offer a side of ketchup as well. The curds of the poutine were genuine curds but the gravy I found wasn't hot enough to melt many of the curds so they stayed chunky. The taste was still pretty great despite the lack of cheese melt/pull. The single animal smash burger with my poutine side was more than enough to fill my appetite. It came with bacon and their animal style sauce (an in-and-out style sauce). It was kind of messy as the sauce leaked out a bit but nothing crazy. The burger was seasoned well, and it paired well with cheese and bacon. I probably wouldn't get this particular burger again but only because there are so many other options for burgers. Met a friend here at 5:30PM on a Sunday. Lots of parking in the residential streets. We got seated immediately but around 6:30PM it got busy and inside was 100% full (there was a patio upstairs but I never saw it as the air quality was poor that day so we opted to sit inside). Lots of families, couples, and groups. Waitress was very kind and refilled our waters multiple times. Menu online is accurate. Waitress confirmed the Basil Aioli is dairy free for my friend but she ended up with the Highlands Green on a Gluten-free bun with the Thai Cabbage Salad as a side. She loved the burger and bun, but didn't like the dressing on the salad and didn't eat it. I got the Mushroom Swiss with garlic fries. Loved the presentation - patty sticking out of the bun But if you try just the patty its quite under seasoned and dry. BUT there is tons of sauce and flavor in the toppings and if you eat it all together it was 9/10 good. Loved the look that the patty is bigger than the bun BUT for taste would have preferred a thicker patty. Garlic fries were smoking hot, fresh from the frier 10/10. The poutine I had as a side was not hot and the fries were hard, like it sat on the plate for a while before serving. Overall, I would say there is nothing special about these burgers. Ingredients are fresh and the patties are thin, but ultimately underwhelming. They're also messy and difficult to eat/keep together. The animal fries are mediocre and although the onions are there, they have no flavour. The animal sauce completely takes over. I'm a burger fanatic. I've been to all the places in Edmonton. I've heard good things about Fox Burger. While it was very good, it's not the best, not by a long shot. I was served promptly, but felt very rushed. The drinks menu was nothing special. I ordered a burger and their specialty fries. I was super excited! Upon receiving the burger, it didn't look all that special. I felt it had too much sauce to really judge the flavour of the burger itself. It also fell apart really quickly. Still tasted good, just not the best I've had. The fries were very good however. Lots of flavour, perfectly crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. Bacon Beer Smash burger was above standard fare but the kitchen staff are heavy on the salt...the bacon, beer cheese and pickles already provide ample amounts of salt and could honestly use a lighter hand. The burger started out tasting amazing but about a third through it, the salt content of everything hits you and the one slice of lettuce does not balance it out. Our waitress stood vigilant at he kitchen counter finishing orders and only checked in ONE TIME immediately after delivering our orders to the table. The Fox Cheeseburger, American Cheddar, Smoked Provolone, Dijonnaise, BnB Pickles & Iceberg served on a toasted sesame bun. The beef patty was thick and juicy, seasoned well and grilled/seared perfectly with that crispy edge. The Crispy Buffalo Chicken, Breaded and Fried Chicken Thigh, Jalapeño Ranch, House Buffalo Sauce, BnB Pickles, American Swiss & Iceberg served on a toasted sesame bun. The breading on the fried chicken was seasoned well, but it kind of got soggy by the time I got home and so did the bun. It would probably be better if it was eaten at the restaurant, but that being said, this was my favourite out of the 2 burgers I got. The Garlic Fries, it came as a side for both burgers and it was pretty good. Very garlicky in a good way and was still kind of crispy when I got home. Came here to meet some friends in the area and discovered it's in an attractive little shopping street in the Highlands area just a few doors down from Janis Irwin's NDP office. They have a great rooftop patio that appears to take over the entire roof of their building - down side is that you do have to climb up about 3 flights of stairs to get to it. But you're earning that burger! The burger itself was fine but not outstanding, though the fries were excellent. My friends appeared to enjoy their burgers so perhaps I just made an unlucky choice; it certainly wasn't bad, just nothing special. But for the lovely huge open air patio? Definitely worth returning. One of my friends is celiac and she ordered a gluten free burger with no issues, so that's another point in their favour for those who can't have gluten. read more

I found the fries nicely garlicky, but the burger was definitely the highlight. Staff at the food truck managed the line great! The bags and packaging seemed reasonably environmentally friendly. This was our first dine in (dine out?) meal in 3 months. Fox Burger and their rooftop patio was a great choice. The Gibbard Block and Highlands never looked better. Having made reservations the day before, we were warmly greeted in the restaurant and invited to walk up the four flights of stairs to the patio. We were seated on chairs with a small patio table upon which was taped the laminated menu. Ordering was done at the bar where you also reserved your drink and later paid. Don't expect much table service in these current times other than when they brought our meal in a bag and disposable packaging. All in all, it was good service. The food was fine but not the wow I was hoping. I was excited to try the Swiss burger and my wife was happy there was a chicken burger on the menus. For sides, I went with garlic fries and she upped her's to the panzanella salad. We finished it off with the ice cream sandwich for dessert. She loved the chicken and I thought the beef patty was good. The buns were soft and quite large. The toppings were fine but we both felt like their were holding back on the flavour. The jalapeño ranch tasted like ranch with zero kick. The buffalo chicken was pretty much regular chicken. The mushrooms were barely noticeable. The B+B pickles tasted like something between a bread & butter and a dill pickle. Maybe the pickle is the best analogy for Fox Burger. It tasted good but nothing really popped. Ordered takeout - two featured 420 burgers (one lettuce wrapped), and a strawberry cheesecake milkshake. Loved everything! We sat on a bench inside while waiting for our takeout order to be ready. The staff was super friendly. I was drooling when they brought our order out because it smelled heavenly! When we got home, the beef was seasoned well and I swear they used like 1/4 head of lettuce for my "lettuce bun". I really appreciated the amount of lettuce for the wrapping, because there's nothing worse than getting a measly single piece of lettuce to hold everything. Another Saturday, another new burger place! It seems we've made it a quest to try all the trendy burger joints in YEG! Fox Burger had some hits, and one or two misses as well. When we arrived it was quite busy, but we only waited a few moments for a table to be cleared for us. We sat down, but I did not remove my coat as it was quite chilly in the restaurant. We checked out the limited menu and found some yummy goodies to try. The waitress came to take our drink order, she asked my hubby what he wanted, and as he answered her (coffee), she was staring off into space, awkward silence. She finally asked "cream & sugar?" Yes, he replied. And away she went. She dropped off my delicious cider sangria...but no coffee. Hubby said "I knew she wasn't listening to me." We watched her run around serving tables (it was pretty busy) and eventually managed to capture her attention. "Ummm, coffee?" we asked. Blank stare. Pause. Oh yeah! Cream & sugar? Us again: Yes. He got his coffee, and after he finished the cup, and it sat empty until he asked for a refill... I ordered the bacon & egg smash burger with disco fries, and hubby had the bacon pepper smash. Our food showed up in a reasonable amount of time, the kitchen was on point! Both burgers were tasty, fresh, and perfectly cooked. I loved the soft & fresh bun! The disco fries were yummy, and garlicky, covered with melty cheese and gravy. Sharesies were definitely in order here. The food is spot on. When we finished eating, our plates were cleared away. We sat. And we waited for the bill. Once again we flagged our server down, and asked for the bill. And we waited. Finally we asked the manager who was working the hostess station to please bring the bill so we could pay and go. Not going to lie, I was a little irritated with the service. Fox Burger was on my list of places to check out since it opened in September and I finally made it a few weeks back. On a Friday night this place is hopping even after 8PM! However, it does seem the later crowd is more there for drinks and nappies, so definitely make a reservation if you're planning to go on a weekend evening otherwise you may be waiting for a while for a table! My husband and I started our night with milkshakes. My husband had the salted caramel apple, which was absolutely delicious and taste like a salted caramel candy apple in liquid form; and I had the vanilla chai, which was equally as tasty! We then each had burgers -- the Mushroom Swiss and Bleu Cheese Tomato with a side of fries, though my husband and had disco fries as his side instead, which is their version of a poutine! The burgers are juicy and tender, and you'd definitely have a hard time not making a mess and I mean that in the best way possible! We ended the night with one of each of the desserts. The apple pie with cinnamon ice cream & salted caramel. And the lemons curd & blackberry ice cream sandwich. We were both super stuffed at this point, but if we had to pick favorites, we'd pick the apple pie! The cinnamon ice cream was my favorite part about it. It was the perfect complement to the warm apple pie and was not overpowering in anyway.. and the salted caramel, delicious! All in all, dinner was great and definitely worth a visit or two. This very new burger place is a welcome addition to Highlands commercial strip on 112 Avenue. The menu consists of burgers, a few salads, and a couple of other choices like Mac and Cheese. There is also a short wine and beer offering. If burgers are in your name, they had better be good and these are. Patties are hand formed and smashed onto a flat top to get nice brown edges. The topping combos are elevated variations on the standards. My blue cheese burger was very tasty without being overwhelmed by the blue cheese. The disco fries, which are garlic fries topped with mozzarella and gravy, are very good because the chicken gravy clearly came from actual roasted chicken drippings. The room is a little noisy, bright and somewhat lacking in character. I did sort of expect that foxes might be featured in the decor given that they seem to being having a moment. Overall, good food and a staff that seem eager to please will make for a good neighbour. read more

I don't think this restaurant should offer a lettuce wrap option if they only provide small pieces of iceburg lettuce to hold two massive patties. I got the inferno burger and it was so SALTY that the salt over powered the spice. Very disappointed pointed and paid $24. Also the house salad is a bust, the iceberg lettuce was still intact and just had massive chunks of lettuce and could barely mix the dressing in. read more

Decided to splurge and ordered Fox Burger through Skip the Dishes. Prices seemed quite high for a burger and fries, but we figured it would be phenomenal and therefore worth the price. We were left feeling pretty "meh" about it. One thing that irritated me is that they have cute names for their sauces, but no explanation of what they are. What is "Smash Sauce"? What is "Animal Sauce"? No description on their menu and google was no help either. My boyfriend ordered the crispy chicken burger - it was a little confusing because it's not battered or breaded. It was crispy-ish, but not really sure what the coating was. He also had garlic fries, which were good. His daughter got the Highland Green burger and fries. She said the fries were good and the burger was "just okay". I opted for a kid's portion of popcorn chicken and a side of animal fries. The menu says the chicken comes with honey mustard for dipping, but what it actual was was more of a spicy dijon mustard. I didn't hate it, but didn't love it. I don't know many kids who would want to eat that though. The chicken itself was extremely dark and crispy. I like it that way, but I'm sure most would call it burnt. And again... I don't know any kids who would want to eat that. One of the toppings listed for the Animal fries is "mustard fried onions". What that means apparently is a heaping scoop of goopy carmalized onions. All I could taste was vinegar - I hated them. But unfortunately when I tried to scraped them off, all the sauce came with them. If I was forced to eat there again, i might try a salad, or maybe just an order of garlic fries. Everything else (in my opinion) is overhyped and overpriced. read more

Love the burgers here. The roof top is a hike but nice. Good selection of beers and also offers ciders and gf options.

Finally a bumping spot in my own area! I am beyond pleased that this place is so close to my home. I came here on a Wednesday night and sat up at the bar with a friend. The server behind the bar was beyond friendly alllll night. We each tried a beer, margarita and the strawberry Tom Collins was my personal favourite. I ordered the mushroom burger with garlic fries and gobbled it down. I was a big fan of how they cook their hamburgers patties, flat but still juicy with some crunchy bits around the outside, super soft bun. The garlic fries definitely did not lack garlic. This place was bustling with singles, families, couples, you name it. Great atmosphere all night. This will become my regular spot. read more

Wow! This is not your ordinary burger joint, definitely a step above the rest. I went here with a dinner group and everyone really enjoyed their meals. Started with the fried green tomatoes which was actually a bucket list food item for me ever since I watched the movie lol, and they were so very tasty with a nice batter and dipping sauce, I would definitely get them again. I had the bleu cheese burger which actually didn't taste too much like bleu cheese at all, it was still delicious, the patties on these burger are perfectly seasoned but I do wish it had more of the bleu cheese taste. The fries are simply Amazing! They are in a league of their own with their delicious crispy garlic flavour, they definitely win top prize!. Lots of drink items to choose from and the atmosphere is excellent. Looking forward to coming back again. read more

Great view of the autumn colours from the rooftop patio. Nice selection of Alberta craft beer on tap. Food was only average, the burgers were ok but nothing special to justify the price, especially from a place that advertises itself as a specialty burger restaurant. Not sure why the food is delivered to the table in to-go containers, and there is no table service as such, all ordering is done at the bar. If the reasoning is Covid protocol it makes little sense that disposable containers are any safer than plates, glasses and cutlery that have been washed, especially considering the food comes from a commercial kitchen. Overall average but I would go to Woodshed or Next Act for a better burger in future. read more

I was very pleased when Fox Burger opened, as it is situated in the heart of the Highlands community. FoxBurger is situated in the historic Gibbard Block, so offers a fine night out. The doorway into FoxBurger is not directly into Fox Burger so one doesn't need to worry about any drafts. Fox Burger provides an array of Burgers, such as the Mushroom Swiss, as well as some innovative burgers like the Blue Cheese Tomato and the hot Inferno Smash. The accompaniments also do not disappoint, with offerings such as the Fried Pickled Green Tomatoes and Panzanella Salad. The burgers are definitely filling and scrumptious and do not disappoint! There is a large selection of beer available, and all beer is produced in Alberta. read more
