I really like this place that has become and institution really. Great atmosphere. Comfortable and cool without being pretentious. I love their cinnamon buns but this time I did not order one. My friend and I came here for supper. It was delicous. I had the Red Curry Laksa with prawns, PEI mussels, bok choy, carrots, bell peppers, red onions, vermicelli noodles, red coconut curry sauce, and cilantro. My friend had the falafel and fries. I loved my Red Curry Laksa. It was fresh and rich. Loved the red coconut curry sauce. The seafood was a decent portion. My friend liked her falafal but it definately wasn't the best she has had and was eyeing up my curry. Service was OK. It was only my second time to Sugarbowl in my many years in Edmonton. I don't really remember my first time though!! I had their mac and cheese and the lamb burger. Both were so very tasty, and did not disappoint. The ambiance of the restaurant is different than many places I've gone to. Being close to the University of Alberta main campus, many young students compose the clientele of Sugarbowl, but not limited to. Came here at 11AM on a Sunday. At first was warned it was 15-20minutes wait but had to wait 7minutes for a table to sit inside. Place is 100% full inside but there were patio tables still available. Problem was wasps were also outside and visibly bothering people. No wasps inside! Don't forget to register your license plate at the bar. Online menu has really clear good pictures. Staff are very friendly and never let my water go empty. We got the chicken and waffles. 9/10. Chicken is boneless and more like a schnitzel. Breading and flavor is 10/10. Watermelon salsa was great and I wish there was more. Carmel side dish was tasty but not very flavorful. My little cup was also bigger than my friend's which made him upset. Waffles were very meh. Overall I liked it more than I though I would, but the waffles were so boring I will try something else next time. In my personal option they needed to be cooked longer, needed a berry sauce and whipped cream or even bake them with ham and cheese or even just SOME flavor. Ok this place was awesome! If you're in Edmonton and want a breakfast/ brunch/ lunch place (not sure about dinner or evenings) that will keep you happy, you've came to the right place. We got there a bit too early and spent some time in the cute bakery open next door, and got in right as they were opening. The interior has an old western style bar look, one that they could easily use as a movie set with the right accompaniments. The food was great and was reco'd to me by both my nieces (locals) who frequent the place for their sister dates to catch up and enjoy a special meal. Great service! This was what clearly bumped up my review to 5 stars. It was the one thoughtful thing they did that was unforgettable. Great spot with an awesome little patio. Seemed to be one of the few breakfast/brunch spots open early on the long weekend Monday. Only down side was they couldn't serve mimosas until 10am but had a lovely latte instead. The cinnamon bun was ginormous and very fresh. My husband had the pulled pork hash which was also delicious. I've been coming here for brunch since I was in high school. My favourites are the huevos rancheros and of course the giant cinnamon bun. The huevos rancheros come with beans, deep fried tortillas, melted cheese and two poached eggs and is always delicious. I notice that their coffee has improved a great deal...they use Kaffa beans (a local roaster that opened up right next door). Service is always friendly and you can't beat the lively environment. The place was packed on a 3pm holiday and people kept on coming. We didnt wait long on getting seated but we did wait for a while on the food. They were super busy that ordering a side gravy took too long that i had to cancel it as it was the only thing we were waiting for and everyone else in the group was finished eating. The pulled pork sandwich was just ok. There was not enough coleslaw in the sandwich and while they were generous on the pulled pork meat, it was just way too much. The ratio between meat, coleslaw and bun was not right and everything was just falling on the plate. I hate the fries. It was very soggy, cold and underwhelming i barely ate it. I had been to Sugarbowl once with my husband, and we'd liked it, but not enough to bother with all the traffic and parking headaches if we didn't get there at just the right time. A few weeks ago, I got a bee in my bonnet and decided to try it again on a very crisp cold fall day. I found a decent parking place down the street in some of the newly carved out parking real estate and got the second place in the line outside, so I couldn't have timed it much better. Server was cordial, but not overly so. I ordered the omelet of the day, with spinach, and I think mushrooms. The coffee was good and hot, and it was a perfect breakfast. The tunes are always eclectic, and the people watching is always great. I always admire the sight and smell of those cinnamon buns emerging from the kitchen, but having just lost 40 pounds, I decided on a rain check, and will indulge when I'm closer to my goal weight. Stopped in for a snack before I picked my kids up from school and I had to get a famous SugarBowl cinnamon bun! If you haven't had these, they're a HUGE fresh baked traditional cinnamon sugar bun. Fluffy and buttery inside with a crispy layer of cinnamon sugar baked into the crust. I like mine with a little bit of butter to really make it decadent. I can never finish eating one of these so I feel like it's a good one to share or have leftovers for breakfast the next day :) The cinnamon bun was $5 and they bake them fresh daily and have them ready to sell through the day. Slap your mama good. That pretty much sums up my breakfast at SugarBowl. The crazy thing is, this breakfast really shouldn't be THIS good. It isn't like we're talking ground breaking items here: omelettes, sandwiches, potatoes, wraps, waffles, cinnamon bun....all with basic ingredients. But what is very much immediately apparent is the quality of the ingredients. As I have often said, there really is no need to complicate things when your individual ingredients shine. My Omelet featured feta, sun dried tomatoes, and ham. That's it. And with these three simple ingredients, this is among the top omelets I've ever had. That can probably be debated. What can't at all be debated is the sun dried tomatoes. Sweet, chewy, delicious. The best, period. And the rustic potatoes? Nice golden sere, perfectly tender. As if it wasn't already good enough on its own, the "salsa" puts the potatoes into the "are you kidding me" taste category. Or better yet, the "Bottle it, and sell it by the gallon please" category. Even the toast, which I had no interest in until I felt bad that it would be thrown away, tasted like no toast I've ever had. Now, on to more serious matters; we need to talk about this Cinnamon Bun. I mean, Ive had a few in my day, even some scratch made, but never one like this. Yes it's massive...but this isn't the typical mediocre bread masked by a mound of cinnamon and maple cinnamon syrup that you'll find pretty much everywhere else. First of all, this bread could easily be packaged and served on its own. Pillowy soft, chewy, melt in your mouth. Then comes the cinnamon which forms a wonderful crust over the bread, creating the absolute perfect balance of texture. This bun somehow doesn't even taste like you're eating enough sugar to make your dentist blush. Not at all overly sweet. I'm resigned to the fact that I will never in life have a better cinnamon bun. I've made my peace. Maybe it's because I know I stashed a good chunk in my luggage. Edmonton is a beautiful city, but even if it resembled a barren desert, SugarBowl alone would make it worth the trip. read more

Sugarbowl just is Edmonton. There is not much of a better neighbourhood restaurant that encapsulates the feeling of this city. They opened in 1943 - that's right, 79 years ago!! If they don't know this city then who does? Located on the best little stretch of Garneau on the edge of the river valley, Sugarbowl is teeming with the feeling of community. Featured on the first season of You Gotta Eat Here!, this restaurant has been on everyone's radar for decades. They're probably most known for their breakfast/brunch which is why I visited on a Saturday morning. I arrived around 10:30am and there was already a wait. You definitely want to arrive early if you're looking for a quick table, however they do take reservations for dinner. Immediately recognizable, Sugarbowl's green striped awning is pretty iconic. They also have one of the best patios in the city out front when it's warmer. After a fairly reasonable wait, I was ushered into the warm and bustling atmosphere that is Sugarbowl. Beams of sunlight shine through the large garage-style doors (that open up to the street in the summer), the walls are entirely made of exposed brick, and there is always an interesting rotation of independent art hanging. Every table is packed, servers are moving around busily, and being in this space just feels good. It feels like the best of Edmonton. To start with a beverage I gravitated toward the House-Made Chai Latte ($3.50 for 9oz) and our friendly server was quick to take our order and to get everything started for us. Hot and frothy, this chai was very enjoyable. I loved the warm spice flavour and I appreciated that it wasn't too sweet. This version is a million times better than the types of made-from-concentrate chais that you get at chain cafes. If there is one item that I will shout from the rooftops about, it's Sugarbowl's Cinnamon Bun (Baked daily - $5.00). And I know that I'm not alone on this one. It is absolutely one of the best food items available in Edmonton. Full stop. It's always served with a knife sticking out of it and it always comes with containers of butter. This cinnamon bun is LEGENDARY. I don't even like cinnamon buns... But I love this cinnamon bun. It's huge. It's warm. It pulls apart and it melts in your mouth. Twisted layers of sticky cinnamon-sugar goodness, all wrapped within a pillowy soft dough. This is a very special item and I almost feel emotional about it because it symbolizes so much joy and happy memories to me. A visit to Sugarbowl is not complete without it. Get one to go if you must. For my main dish I had to choose their (very likely) most popular breakfast offering, Chicken & Waffles (Waffle topped with 2 fried & breaded chicken breasts, watermelon salsa, and maple butter - $19.00). I used to be obsessed with their huevos rancheros although I remember them changing somehow at some point and not liking them as much. I definitely need to revisit them and check up on what they're like these days. But everyone knows that the chicken & waffles are famous at Sugarbowl and I needed in on that! Chicken and waffles became a "thing" about a decade ago and they've maintained their desirability ever since. The one at Sugarbowl is nice because there are no bones in the chicken and it's very easy to eat. The waffle is light and fresh, cooked to a beautiful golden colour. The chicken is juicy and tender, fried to perfection, and I really appreciated how well-seasoned the batter is. So much flavour! The best part (okay, one of them) is the maple butter, which I dipped my bites directly into, as opposed to dumping the whole thing over top. I enjoyed the watermelon salsa for a little hit of bright freshness. These are solid chicken & waffles. There are lots of options in the C&W game and these ones will not leave you disappointed. I'm really looking forward to returning for dinner because it has been a really long time since I have done so. Sugarbowl is well known for their extensive beer selection and they carry Früli - which is forever what I picture in my hand when I think of myself at Sugarbowl in the evening. We made our first trip to the Sugarbowl this past weekend. I had only heard amazing things about their food so I was excited. We had about an hour wait for our table which seemed a bit wild but a quick stop in at Transcend made the wait bearable. When we were finally sat at our table we were immediately greeted with waters. And placed our orders. The food took an extremely long time to show up but they were pretty busy. I ordered the eggs Benny at the recommendation of a friend. While the food was good I honestly wasn't blown away. Everyone else at the table was enjoying their meals. I personally found the cornbread extremely overwhelming to the dish and everything else was just fine. I've had much better eggs Benny elsewhere. I'm in no hurry to return so I will leave the space for those who love it. read more

Its a interesting eatery.if I recall it was dimly lit but had candles on all the tables. It was evening. My server was probably the most outstanding part of my time there. Quirky but very friendly. I think she was the only working that day but she handled all the tables very well. I got chicken and waffles. I don't know if I'm a fan but its not a shot at the dish. It was a rainy Saturday morning, when hubs and I went out to whyte ave to grab coffee ended up coming here for breakfast. Walked in and it was not busy, hand sanitizer was served right at the start. Waiters were all wearing masks and tables distanced part. Now the atmosphere was great and relaxed, music playing in the back. The breakfast/brunch menu only consisted of a few items. Luckily they had the feta and cheese omelette the day I went. I had it before and loved it. This time when I had it, not impressed it was very runny and bland. Those soggy potatoes were served with a homemade ketchup which was quite bland and required more seasoning and sugar. It was too bland for my liking. So minus another star. I also ordered a latte which was ok. But average at best again. My friends coffee was ok but refills were hard to come by as his coffee cup was empty most of our meal. Service is slow as the waitresses seemed flustered and could not manage their tables which kinda left you ignored. This place seems to cater to a young hip crowd who like a cool place to hang out. Located so close to whyte av and university. This restaurant has a little bit of everything, great food and service. Due to covid spacing is in place between tables. I ordered from the brunch menu. The vegan sausage and tofu scramble was delicious. However, a small detail is the butter that was included on the side of the dish. Not really necessary considering I ordered from the vegan menu. It's very easy to overlook chicken but SugarBowl has it done right! The watermelon salsa pairs perfectly with it. You would expect it to be sweet but I honestly kinda don't mind savoury watermelon? You can judge the quality of a breakfast place based on the Eggs Benedict. By that, Sugarbowl is definitely top notch. We had the Mac and Cheese $23 which we had to wait a long time as place was very busy! The chicken was tough and Mac was dried out quite tasteless. I want people to know that SugarBowl has the new Beyond Meat Sausage and it is the BOMB. I actually had to confirm with my server that this wasn't meat because it literally tasted like meat. Beyond Meat is straight up wild with their products, it's insane. I would definitely recommend my vegetarian friends going here and enjoying this dish! I also had really good service by a woman who was just so nice! She eye-contacted with me the entire time and listened with her entire body. So many good reviews and very high hope it was going to be really good, but at the end a little disappointed. We were here on a Sunday during lunch hour, the place was busy as expected. It took awhile after we sat down for our waitperson to acknowledge us but that was fine. I did notice the kitchen staff, a middle age couple with a 4 burner stove and a flat top was able to turn out food faster than all the waitpersons could deliver to their tables. Anyhow, we ordered their famous cinnamon bun to share. The bun was not the sticky kind and cinnamon sugar was on the outside and not rolled into the layers of the bun which I think made the bun overall less cinnamon flavor but it still good. I had their Sugarbowl Benny which was a disappointment. Restaurants are trying to come up with all kinds of variation to their bennys. The Sugarbowl Benny had two pieces of cornbread that were dense and dry, instead of hollandaise, it had béchamel which didn't do it for me. There was not enough egg yolk or sauce to rehydrate the cornbread. The music was too loud, we couldn't hear each other talk. Their drink menu was many pages longer than the brunch menu. The coffee is good, perhaps tending to the dark roast astringent, but not a reason to make the SugarBowl a destination when you're driving by.
