I finally made my way to Highlevel Diner on 109 St in Edmonton. The restaurant is very nice and cozy, and very welcoming. I ordered a chicken fajitas plate and it was very tasty - the fajitas were filled with seasoned chicken, onions and green peppers. Brown rice and refried beans were the sides, along with salsa and sour cream. The menu is diverse, and I wanted to sample a good number of the dishes !! The drinks menu was honestly nice and long. Everything is solid here. The atmosphere. The service. The food. I love the local art that is displayed here. And for a fee it can be yours. The ever changing art brings a new dimension into the restaurant. I had the appetizer platter. This came with blackbean hummus, tzatziki, chichen souvlaki, and spiniach pie. My friend had the Chicken green curry. Both dishes were fresh, flavourful, and generous. My chicken was cooked really well, and the spinach pie was rich and garlicy. My pita bread though was dry. Food was good, I especially enjoyed their burger patty (I had the 'so Gouda burger') The fries were too salty for my liking and I wasn't a fan of the gravy but that's my personal preference. Their pulled pork sandwich was also good as was their turkey and black bean soup (the broth was very flavourful). I got a cinnamon bun to-go with caramel bourbon sauce which was lovely. This is an excellent place for a meal, with lots to choose from. It is close to the University and has great tasting dishes. The restaurant has adequate seating and has a good atmosphere. Service is friendly and timely. The only challenge with visiting this establishment would be parking, as this is located in an area where parking is a premium. Food is above par, drinks are incredible, and pricing is average. Would recommend a visit, but because of the location, if you don't live in the area, this would be a venue that I would visit once or twice a year. All in all, a great experience! read more

Wow. What a burger. I got the spice bird sandwich, which is a chicken burger with house sauce, soft buns, and the best chicken I've ever had in my life (even outside of a burger). Served with fries and a house ketchup (delicious), there's really nothing that I would change about the food. The servers are nice, it's a quaint little diner with a non-commercial vibe. Been here several times now and of course I have to try something new! I got the Diners Vegetarian Burger. Bun as super fresh and well toasted. Vegetables on it were fresh and crisp. Patty was good but did crumble a lot. 9/10. It comes with a condiment tray of 4 which was super fun and a way to personalize the burger. I got the soup of the day - Coconut curry squash - good flavor but quite thin and could have been richer and thicker or had some filler like vegetables or rice in it. Not spicy. 8/10 Boyfriend got the Grilled Chicken & Cheddar cheese sandwich. The sandwich was better than I expected. Bread coated in egg like a French toast was cooked very well. Filling was moist, lots of chicken and creamy. I would give it a 9/10 as I would prefer stiffer more hearty bread. He also got the soup and liked it. Friend got the Classic Ural Burger with gluten-free bun. She specifically asked if they had buns as sometimes menus offer gluten free options but then the burger is just in a lettuce wrap. She also got the condiment tray. She was happy with her choice. She also got the Green salad - this looked great - very colorful. My gluten free friend also got the flourless chocolate cake. When it comes to classic Edmonton it doesn't get more iconic than Garneau's Highlevel Diner. Its been around since 1982 and you'll find them right at the south end of the High Level Bridge, hence its name. You Gotta Eat Here! featured them in season two of the show and locals have been enjoying this neighbourhood restaurant for years upon years. The little section of road that Highlevel Diner is on not only has an incredible view of the downtown skyline, but has also become increasingly awesome in recent years in terms of businesses. It's a "good restaurant" hot spot, home to not only Highlevel Diner, but also Sugarbowl Cafe, Eleanor and Laurent, and La Petite Iza - every single one of them an amazing restaurant. I'd kinda love to live directly across the street. Parking can be a bit of a pain in this area but I tend to find that street parking usually materializes. Highlevel Diner has a beautiful location right on the street corner and the spacious yet cozy restaurant feels exactly as you hope it will, with dark wooden beams, quaint little nooks, local art all over the walls, and a magical suncatcher display. It absolutely feels like home. They also have some patio seating along the front of the building with string lights hanging overhead from the awning. It really couldn't be a nicer little spot. I visited on a Sunday evening and a friendly server seated me on the patio in the beautiful spring sun. I went ahead and ordered a Homebrewed Iced Tea (Lightly sweetened home brew - $3.95) since I've always been a fan of "real" iced tea. What more could you want on a pleasant sunny day? I love a homemade iced tea that isn't too sweet and actually tastes like real tea. This one succeeds at exactly that. However, I did question whether what was served to me was actually an arnold palmer (an iced tea mixed with lemonade) because I was definitely detecting some lemon going on. Either way, I was very happy drinking this. If I had been feeling boozy I likely would've ordered the Highlevel caesar, which is made with a local hot sauce and house pickles. The food at Highlevel Diner is half diner-like, half brunchy, half Canadiana, and half comfort. (I guess those should've been quarters and not halves.) There are lots of sandwiches and burgers, but also things like short ribs, fish & chips, and Guinness cottage pie. But also Thai green curry? They're also getting into the world of fried chicken these days (because who isn't?). It's a bit of a mixed bag. I've been ordering the same sandwich for years and have a difficult time deviating at this point: the Chick N Cheddar Sandwich (Egg dipped, grilled cheese bread, chicken salad & cheddar cheese - $14.50) which is served with a choice of fries or soup. I have very affectionately been referring to this sandwich as the "cholesterol sandwich" for many years. It's like cheesy french toast as bread with creamy chicken salad inside and more cheese. So as long as you know what you're getting yourself into, you're probably going to love this sandwich a whole lot. I know I do! The bread is super soft and moist and the chicken salad is made up of nice fresh chunks of chicken. There's a lot of sharp cheddar going on throughout and it adds a great flavour as well as those crispy fried cheese edges (which are the best). I will never stop loving (and ordering) this sandwich. The fries are also exceptional. Super crispy and golden, lightly salted, and a perfect match for the housemade ketchup that you get with them. This plate is great just the way it is. Never change a thing. There's a famous dessert at Highlevel Diner so I ordered it! The Bread Pudding (Served warm, swimming in caramel bourbon sauce - $8.50). Very sweet and absolutely swimming in a sugar bath - with a bowl of whipped cream on the side. This dessert was absolutely delicious. The bread itself was ultra moist and caramelized on top, each bite bathing itself in the incredible, sticky-sweet caramel bourbon sauce. It's the kind of sauce that you would consider taking a bath in - except that it would also give you diabetes. I loved dunking my spoonfuls into the whipped cream for maximum effect. This dessert is a lot and I would certainly recommend sharing it but you won't be disappointed. Eating a meal at Highlevel Diner just feels right. It's comfortable, unpretentious and feels like home. They may not have some of the bells and whistles that other restaurants do but you can't really go wrong with a mainstay like this one. They're also known for their brunch, which I need to return for because it has been a long, long time since I've had it. This is the kind of restaurant that makes you feel good and I hope that they continue to do so for another 40 years. read more

Finally added huevos rancheros to weekend brunch!!!!! They only thing to make it better would be ditching the canned refried beans and instead using real black beans. Alberta is a grain and legume powerhouse after all and High Level makes a point of supporting local produce and providers. Second time here and it's no fluke how delicious the food is here. The staff are super friendly and the decor beckons to a simpler time in casual dining. There is a patio area for summer and it's location of restaurant is in unique area near university of Alberta. Menu selection is good and pricing is not cheap but for what yummy food you get it's worth it. Got the chicken grilled cheese with home made fries and maple mayo. The bread was dipped in egg. Wow. We have been ordering take out from here during the pandemic pretty regularly. We go for the gluten free fish and chips special with a caesar salad and some mandarin fruit punch drinks. All of their sauces are made in house including the ketchup. Portions are big and generous. We usually share an order if fish and chips and the entree salad. The Highlevel Diner is really close to home, and a place I bring my parents all the time, and they're not easy to please! There's gluten-free items to keep Mom happy, and the Ukrainian night specials (perogies with sautéed onions, sweet or savory (or both) cabbage rolls) for Dad, and pretty much everything else for me - from breakfast things to salads to especially the turkey plate - except the cinnamon buns, which are famous but do nothing for me. Just too dry. Ok portions and a full brunch menu, if you're needing to break a party into a weekend morning :-) I find the prices on the high end, and I think they do float a bit on their reputation. There's always an almost full house, and a loudish conversational buzz, but I can always hear the others in my party. Homemade ketchup which is a must try...is that curry in there? Given a gift certificate to the High Level Diner, naturally we decided to use it. We went the take out route. We ordered fish and chips, Ural burger, 109st burger, onion rings and Caesar salad. Diner number one said his fish and chips were okay. The piece of fish was large and not greasy. The fries were damp from condensation but still okay. Ingredients in the Ural burger were cemented together. Fries damp. Shake of head from diner number two. There's always a burger that's been left on the back of the grill. It sits there all day long. It gets a hard black crust on it. Salty grease from the grill seeps into it. Diner number three took one bite and could not eat it. It was terrible. Damp fries. Caesar salad okay. Onion rings were so hard and grease encrusted that they, also, were inedible. We were thinking that food loses something in the transporting. But then, why has this never happened with take out from other higher end restaurants than the High Level Diner? So many restaurants in Edmonton, so little time. Bad experience? I have heard many things about the fabled HighLevel Diner and after today I can see why. The food is delicious, I ordered the margarita eggs Benedict served with an acidic hollandaise sauce, that which complimented the tomato and basil in the eggs. The server was a bit blah and didn't seem very excited to be here but everything else was top notch during this experience. We visited for my parents anniversary and they gave us a complimentary cinnamon bun for the occasion. All in all it was a very nice experience and will definitely be back to try their lunch! read more

A classic Edmonton restaurant that never disappoints. Located at the edge of the university, I frequented Highlevel Diner many times when I live in the neighborhood. Their food is classic comfort with some Asian and Middle Eastern additions. Portions sizes are great and we always leave full. I recommended their brunch and also the Mediterranean appetizer platter. They are also well known for their cinnamon buns so don't forget to leave room for some of those. You are able to take them to go too. Busy area to have a late lunch but it was a beautiful Saturday and the 6 of us ended up here. As the restaurant was so full we ended up grabbing a table on the patio where there was hanging outdoor heaters. Down side to that choice was one side of the table was warmer than the other. So I'd advise if you sit on the patio in April that you make sure to still have a good jacket with you. Lots of choices for drinks and coffee but be careful to note that what might look like sugar to one person is not the case. Go for the big syrup like container with brown crystallized sugar instead of grabbing the salt like my friend did by accident. Also milk and cream come in containers with colour coded dots but the coloured dots on the ketchup just mean different dates (as they make their ketchup in house so FYI it's a bit runner than expected and wasn't really much of a flavour). These findings did give us some big laughs though! We were all happy with our range of choices for the meals. I had a fish taco special that had great flavour and had good addition of items to add texture but definitely need to keep over the plate to catch all sauce dripping out. Nothing special about the fries I had as a side, especially after they were accidentally dosed with a large volume of the ketchup. So I'm very serious about being careful of the runny ketchup! As half our table was quite chilled when we were done our meals and the other half couldn't sit any longer on the cold hard chairs, we decided to skip dessert. Nice was to bring in the spring weather but next time I think I'll opt to sit inside. read more

You can definitely tell when this place was roughly built. It totally appears to still have its original look with minimal work done to fix it up. A friend and I decided to share the Mediterranean platter and pork enchiladas. I wasn't too crazy about the latter dish. It came with refried beans and rice. The rice was very disappointing as it was just plain brown rice. It's exactly what I make at home when I'm in a rush. It would be nice if they added some sort of spice to jazz it up. The mediterranean on the other hand was fantastic. I would hands down order it again. For $21 you get a bit of everything and it's well portioned. The chicken souvlaki was well seasoned and the tabouleh salad was so fresh and flavourful. I would love to come back and try their other stuff. Staff members were all friendly and attentive. This is a kitschy edmonton spot to dine at. Comfort food is on the menu! Great for causal lunch and dinners. Also a fun brunch spot. Fun and eclectic ambiance. Portions were very big!!! Fries were crispy and fresh! I was dinning with a celiac so it was great to know they have a separate fryer for gluten free food only, so there is limited risk for cross contamination. Open for 31 years, they are no stranger to keeping Edmontonians and guests to our city well fed! Specials most days; Monday Fish & Chips (with gluten free beer if you like), Turkey Tuesdays, Ukrainian Thursdays (perogy night!), Short Rib Saturday, and Sunday night Prime Rib supper. Legendary weekday breakfast, (with cinnamon buns of enormous size - not gluten free), but weekend Brunch as well. We came most recently for the Fish & Chips on Mondays, but have dined at Ukrainian night as well as weekend brunches. The cod was battered well, crispy and delicious. Tartar sauce made in house and also tasty. The fries... while not my favourite part of the meal weren't bad. In-house made ketchup as well as the commercial stuff. Try both - you might be surprised. Sampled the grilled corn bread that's now gluten free. I missed the grilled part of the description and was a little surprised by the char. Served as a loaf slice. Don't forget to ask for the honey. It was pretty good, but I could only eat one piece. $5 gets you two pieces - so bring a friend or take the rest home! Note for the Celiacs - the gluten free beer they carry at the time I visited was Mongozo. Not a truly gluten free or wheat free beer, but if you can tolerate it, go for it! Word of warning, portions are not puny. Bring an appetite, or a container for your leftovers! The gluten free Mexican Lasagne... I don't see it on the menu now, but it used to come in a giant tinfoil pan when we ordered catering. Enough to feed 4... really good too. Of note - they're closed Jan 21, 2015 for a Top to bottom Cleaning Party. The website says: The entire diner from top to bottom gets cleaned - the kitchen (including the stoves and all the appliances), all the floors, the windows, the walls, the ceiling.... everything gets cleaned. This semi-annual all-day cleaning is in addition to the on-going day-to-day cleanliness policies that we practice. BULLY! Not afraid to lose income for a couple of days a year to keep the place hygienic and safe to eat at! Parking... street, some in the lot by the fence. I don't usually go out to eat alone as I feel food is better enjoyed as a communal experience, but I happened to be around the university / whyte ave area for work and decided to stop at High Level Diner for a late lunch! I've been here before on a couple occasions for breakfast and have enjoyed the busy weekend atmosphere here, so decided to stop by. Atmosphere: 3.5/5 The restaurant had quieted down a bit as it was getting late for lunch. The building has an older feel and it is a little dark inside, but it was also a little hot that day for the outdoor patio. I love the paintings on the walls - gives the place a homey feel and adds to the uniqueness! Otherwise older but overall clean and generally comfortable. It is conveniently located on whyte ave and easily accessible from the university, but parking could be more of a hassle when it gets busy. Food: 3.5/5 I had the daily sandwich / soup special which was blackened cod on a taco and a chickpea lamb soup. Overall, my meal tasted good but the portion size was a bit smaller than what I expected. I had also asked for the aioli sauce on the side; unfortunately the staff accidentally included it with the dish. I thought my meal was average - generally satisfactory, but I think next time I might opt for some of their other menu options - they do have a variety! Nobody needs to be told that the High Level Diner is a great place to eat. It has a long history in Edmonton. Today I was there for a late breakfast and they didn't disappoint. The service was fast and pleasant. The menu was short which is good because only fast food chains can offer 15 page menus of ready to microwave food. A good restaurant has a short menu of real food. I had the standard breakfast special which is bacon and eggs with whole grain toast and potatoes. My guest had pancakes. The treat was when the brought out the house made ketchup. It's so much better than the manufactured stuff. The coffee was good - although not outstanding - and the were always nearby to check if I wanted a refill. It was a very satisfying meal. If there is a complaint it is regarding parking. Today I was most fortunate as I found one of very few dedicated parking stalls in the nearby parking lot. Otherwise you have to drive around clockwise to search for the elusive street parking. I have tried to park here on Saturdays and after my second loop of searching I often give up and park at the nearby Rosso (also very good but noticeably more expensive). If you are not driving or you just feel lucky I highly recommend the High Level Diner. Don't be fooled by the name, it's definitely a step or two above diner food. Think of it as healthy diner food. I would give 5 stars but the High Level Diner has the most difficult parking situation of anywhere I've dined in Edmonton (even downtown there is always paid parking nearby). read more

Finally had a chance to scratch this E-town institution off our list! No question as to how this spot has been around so long. Great location. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Hearty portions... And just good homestyle cooking. There is a small lot south of the building with some reserved spots. Be sure to register your vehicle at the front desk when you arrive if you score one of these spots. The restaraunt has an eclectic, homey feel that csn only come from being established for quite some time. We shared a Middle Eastern sample platter...delicious! Next time I come here...Full order of their amazing spinach pie! Our mains consisted of the Pulled Pork Enchiladas, and the Wednesday special...Dinner's Poutine. Enchiladas were anazing. I came here for lunch the other day. It was my first visit to the High Level Diner. I'm not sure why I haven't been here before, but nonetheless I finally made it to the High Level Diner. So as much as I love the Garneau neighbourhood parking here can be a bit of a pain, but I guess if you park in the lot across the street you can get your parking validated. I think that's what the sign said, but I parked a few blocks away on a residential street. The inside of the restaurant is, well cosy, but I don't mean that in a cramped, no space kind of way. No this is cosy, like comforting and nice kind of cosy. I definitely liked the vibe coming in here. I came for lunch at an odd time (about 3pm) but the restaurant was still pretty busy. I got seated right away and got water to drink. Now I drink Edmonton tap water at home, and at other restaurants, but I found the ice chips in the water I got had a funny taste, like a freezer-burned taste. The water was fine, but the ice was odd, quite strange. I got the ural burger, which is their beef burger (locally sourced I believe) with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and alpha sprouts. The burger is good. It tastes fresh (not like those premade patties you can get at some places). There isn't any sauce on the burger, which normally I wouldn't like, but this burger was a good place. There is ketchup at the table. The ketchup here is made on site (and you can buy some to take home if you want). It is good. You can taste the real tomatoes in their ketchup, unlike commercial ketchups that have that fake sugary tomato taste. I got the side of fries, which were good, not salted too much, and went well with the ketchup. Be warned though: the ketchup can pour out pretty quickly. I am never disappointed when I go to the High Level Diner. It has been an institution of the Garneau food scene for as long as I can remember. Whether I'm strolling in for lunch with friends or stumbling in to cure my hangover, I always leave with a full tummy and a smile on my face. The whole feel of the place just puts me at ease. Perhaps it is because in some way it reminds me of my childhood, family cabin; creaky wood veranda, quirky pieces of art, odd ball but endearing furniture... and when it really pours outside, the roof leaks into that soothing sound of drops falling into tin buckets. The entire menu is excellent, but my absolute fav's have to be the puffy wild blueberry pancakes, the spinach pie (don't tell grandma, it better then her's) the tebouleh salad and the to-die-for Monte Cristo sandwich which only makes a weekly appearance on the menu. They also have great deserts, a separate brunch menu from the breakfast list, and they have an entire celiac menu as well! So next time you are in the mood for some comfort, as well as comfort food, grab your umbrella, if its raining, and succumb to the sublime High Level Diner. read more

This review is only based off our brunch meal. Husband and I walked over the bridge for an anniversary brunch. We had always heard great things about HLD but have never gotten the chance to check it out. We waited for about 20 minutes before we were seated, as it was packed for the Labour Day brunch rush. The brunch menu is quite small. I ordered the classic benedict with roasted potatoes. Hubby ordered the farmer's omelette with multigrain toast, and we ordered one of their legendary cinnamon buns to share (sidenote: Edmontonians really have a thing for cinnamon buns. And green onion pancakes. As a Vancouverite I always found this amusing). The food took awhile to come but service was otherwise efficient. Our waters were refilled throughout the meal. The benedict was all right, nothing special. I did like the back bacon, and the roasted potatoes were good with the home-made ketchup, but aside from this, there was nothing that particularly stood out about our meal. My husband was less impressed unfortunately. He wasn't a fan of his farmer's omelette and didn't even finish it; however he did compliment the multigrain toast. The cinnamon bun was all right too. But again, nothing to write home about. I was a bit disappointed because we had always heard about High Level's brunch and while there was nothing bad about it, I've had better in the city. read more

I had the Huevos Rancheros. They were alright. Service was good. Very nice ambiance. I have been looking for a good Huevos Rancheros in the city. While it was good, I would not go back for it again. read more
