Took a friend here for dinner on a Wednesday night and we both loved this place. We both had a cup of the soup of the day to start. They had 2 kinds a Pumpkin Spice and an Artichoke & Seafood Chowder. Both were AMAZING!!! For our meals we both ordered the Chicken and Cheddar Sandwich with fresh cut homemade fries.. yum.... I was beyond pleased with my meal!! The Sandwich I could eat every day! The bread was dipped in egg and fried with warm chicken salad and cheddar in the middle. My friend requested for the fries to be a little extra crispy and they had no problem accommodating her request. They were fried to perfection. Everything was so good and we were enjoying the ambiance so much that we deiced to stay a while longer and have some tea and desert. We shared a Blueberry crisp (I think that was the name) It was really good if I was to say one thing that I would have preferred would be more of the crisp (there was only a small layer on top) and I like my blueberries squished a little, probably just a personal thing. Overall had a great experience! My friend and I both agreed that we felt like we were at a cabin with nice home cooked yummy food. I wish I could go there during a winter storm, take off my snow suit and boots wait by a fireplace for our meal while drinking some nice hot tea. I'd been meaning to try the Highlevel Diner for a while now, but every time I arrive I am greeted with a huge lineup. Finally, I found a free table for supper on a weeknight. The place was still quite busy, with servers working very hard. I liked the slightly artsy atmosphere and variety of the menu. I have heard about the excellent brunch served here, and many of the staff have been here forever. I settled on a veggie burger and fries. Like just about everything at Highlevel Diner, the patty and the fries here are home made. The patty was huge and full of grains. It somewhat reminded me of felafel - in fact, it would have tasted great with some tahini sauce. Accompanying the burger was a tray of unusual condiments, like beet relish and hot mustard. The fries were plentiful and delicious. My friend had the jumbalaya, which was a thick stew of rice, shrimp, sausage, and various other ingredients. I noticed other patrons having this dish, and while it is not my thing, it looked great. It was served with two thick slices of corn bread. The prices are reasonable and the service was good considering how busy the place was. I wish I was more hungry, because I wanted to try a dessert or some of the many non-alcoholic beverages on the menu. That will have to wait for another day. read more

Went for brunch yesterday, finally got to try their "famous" cinnamon buns after several disappointing attempts. We ordered what happened to be the last two buns as soon as we sat down. I highly recommend you do this, especially on the weekends. They are BIG and quite shareable. We were four people and shared the two. We also ordered brunch. Take note, half a cinnamon bun really fills you up. Order something small to eat with it, not a full entrée! The buns were soft, warm, cinnamon sugar deliciousness. Too bad I found out later you coyld order a caramel sauce to put on it. Not dry as in not moist. They were a bit dry as they do not come with any icing. The caramel sauce is apparently the same as the one they put on their bread pudding. So, if you like it, you will probably enjoy it on the buns. We all ordered the eggs Benedict. Three Florentine, one regular with back bacon. Sides of potatoes, tomatoes and fruit cup were also ordered. Everything was quite tasty. The Florentine comes with fluffy puréed mixture of spinach and cream on top of two Englisgh muffins under poached eggs and lovely hollandaise sauce. The amount of sauce was perfect. Enough for each bite of eggs bennie without drowning the lot. Only recommendation is if you like your yolk a bit on the runny side, be sure to adk. Mine was too cooked for my liking. I enjoy a runny yolk on my English muffin. The regular eggs bennie, was the same but with a thick slice of back bacon instead of spinach. The hasbrown potatoes were nicely fried chunks of red spuds lightly seasoned. We added the homemade ketchup to them. Wish I hadn't. Even though their ketchup is good, it contains garlic and herbs, and is more of an Italian tomato sauce than a traditional ketchup. I like traditional ketchup on my fried potatoes. The fruit cup was just a regular cup of fresh seasonal fruits, nothing to write home about. The drinks ordered were thoroughly enjoyed by all: Awesome mango frappa (blend of mango and orange juices, yogurt and honey), chai latte, and a refreshing pear spritzer (pear nectar and soda). The brunch menu is not a long one. If you are looking for plain ham, bacon and eggs, you will not find them on the menu. You will find eggs Benedict, waffles, French toast and pancakes. From the line up all the way up the door. I think the other menu items are probably pretty tasty too! Definitely will return to try other menu items. A very quaint little restaurant. I love that they support local growers and local artists. It is so refreshing to walk in and there is always something new hanging on the walls. The service is generally very efficient. The dinner menu has something for everyone. I love the freshness of everything. It's been a while since I crossed the bridge and hit the Highlevel Diner, and since tonight's an evening of "elevation" - in the Saturday night sense of the word - both Highlevel and Transcend Cafe are on our hit list. OK, first of all, hello super-cute waiter! Your smouldering eyes are making me blush and want to look away. (Thank God for big menus at times like these!) As I regain composure my girlfriend chokes knowingly on her glass of agua, and I order a Lemon Hart rum & diet to douse the flames while she opts for Raspberry on the rocks - a feisty mix of vodka, Sour Puss Raspberry, cran and soda. My main dish is the Diner Club - real, juicy breast of chicken, savoury bacon and tomato on toasted multigrain - and a side of their Mediterranean tabbouleh, so delicious I am grateful for the generous heap on my plate and this evening's willpower to forgo my usual side of fries. What diner gives you side options of fries, salad, Caesar AND tabbouleh?!! That tomato-parsley-bulgar concoction is serious five-star stuff! My dining partner orders the Middle Eastern Appetizer Platter, and although we both cringe at the menu typo of the word "tzatziki" (we writer-proofreader-marketing-media types can be so pedantic) the food, I can happily say, was up to snuff; in fact, it exceeded snuff. Ambiance: cozy, classy, bustling and artsy. Loved the paintings and dangling stained-glass sun-catchers. Price point: fairly reasonable - although I found the nacho pricing silly: $10 for nachos but $2 extra for guacamole, $2 extra for sour cream, $2 extra for salsa and $2 extra for beef. Why not just call a spade a spade?! They're 18-dollar nachos!! Now that we are well-fed - with room left over for dessert - it's on and up to Transcend. A few things to say. First parking sucks! At least on a Sunday for brunch. But when you get inside things get better. First the service is great. Coffee never got low. The food was good, our table tried two different eggs benny, porridge and an omelette. All given positive reviews. I didn't have a ceaser that day but was told it to was great. I believe the pricing was fair for a breakfast joint. My only other beef was how loud it was. At a table of five I couldn't hear 2 people down from me. An Edmonton institution of sorts, the Highlevel Diner has my absolute favourite Tabbouleh salad. I will often pick out a menu item purely because it features this salad as a side. Otherwise I'll eat that evening's special (the turkey dinner is rather good on Tuesday nights for example) and/or sip on one of their yummy beverage options. The furniture is unique, everything is put together with loving care and the wait staff is very helpful. I really like the unique touches such as the handwritten special of the day boards, and the kindness of the folks at the bar who take your card payment. If you are driving you can park in the lot across the street as long as you register your plate. This is good information to know as the area has limited parking options. Otherwise there's good transit to the area and it is walking distance from Whyte Avenue and/or the University area and is adjacent to the High Level bridge and thus the river valley. I'm a pretty picky brunch guy, but this place exceeded my expectations. The restaurant was quite bumping (i.e., busy) for brunch; despite that, service was very speedy. My water glass was filled after almost every sip. The service bordered on obsequiousness. The food was also quite good, but a tad on the greasy side. A bit of grease is great if one is a bit hungover and I got the impression that hungover diners make up a fair amount of this diner's clientele. I had the veggie omelette and it was pretty loaded with vegetables. Kind of hard to screw that one up. I really liked the homemade ketchup. It's a bit more flavourful but less sweet than the Heinz kinds. I got the cinnamon bun to go. It was fine. A chewy bun that tasted of cinnamon. Not too sticky. Maybe it's better when it's warm. One thing I didn't like: there was a pipe overhead dripping water (I hope) fairly regularly. Maybe that's why my water glass stayed so full. read more

Recently went here to meet up with a few friends and thought the place was alright. From what I heard from other people, this restaurant was over hyped. The lighting was quite dim, which normally would be alright in a romantic restaurant, but it was loud too. I'm not talking music, I'm talking about the general conversation level in the restaurant....I was not expecting it to be bar/pub level. For dinner, I ordered the Jambalaya and was not impressed. There was very little spice and it had a lack of flavor. My friends ordered the Coconut curry chicken and I heard comments about how they could not taste the curry, plus it looked like a regular chicken. Service was not too great either. The restaurant was about 3/4 full, yet it was hard to get our waitresses attention, even when we wanted to pay. This place is good, but nothing sticks out at me. read more

Yes yes yes yes The best eggs benny in town. It's so hard to find an eggs benny that is not only good but is different too and this is it! They are very generous on salt and butter which I know sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen but it's not as intense as it sounds - it's just done significantly better than other breakfast joints I've been to. Their sauce was so buttery and creamy, I couldn't get enough of it. Of course the eggs were done perfectly and the bread and back bacon were easy to cut through. The meat wasn't overly seasoned which was nice because it prevented the dish from becoming over powered with flavor. The potatoes - were done perfectly AND very seasoned! I cant tell you how many times I've gone to a restaurant and the potatoes were just lumps of starch on my plate. These guys had pazaaz, it was wonderful. Their house made ketchup was a perfect pair to the breakfast. It was essentially a pasta sauce! It was on the runny side and quite simply just tasted like tomatoes - perfect for the already well seasoned dish. I also tried their mandarin juice (I believe it was called?) Which had a bit of soda and other fruitt flavors in it. Although I always have my morning coffee with breakfast I thought the juice was a really refreshing substitute. The boyfriend and I shared their famous cinnamon rolls with their bourbon sauce and Oh. My. Goodness. No wonder it's so well known. I've never had a cinnamon bun like it! If you're checking this place out you have to at least get one to go they are to die for! Crunchy brown sugar coating on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside and that sauce beats any powdered sugared glaze I've had. They absolutely destroyed the cinnamon bun game for anyone else. The restaurant is seems small but seats a lot of people! It was packed with everyone from kids to college students to older folks. Surprisingly though it wasn't too loud, and we had a nice little seat by the window. I loved the inside of the restaurant, it was very grandma-folky. Our waitress was kind and attentative, she gave us time with the menu and didn't rush us. Parking was a bit of an 'issue' but it always is in the morning. Was amazed by how busy it was on a Sunday at 3pm bought it would be safe not to wait for a table, but I was wrong. Finally got to check out the Highlevel Diner for lunch today :) Both myself and my dining partner had the Thursday Ukrainian special. Pirogies with sautéed onions, 4 cabbage rolls (either sour in a cream sauce or sweet in a tomato sauce - our server suggested we can have 2 of each if we couldn't decide so that's what we did) a garlic sausage and a cup of borscht. All of the food was delicious, the soup was especially good - I could eat like 7 bowls of it. Next time I would get all sour cabbage rolls, soooooo good. I could have skipped the sausage, nothing special about it but that's not my thing anyways so it could have been amazing and I'm just not appreciating it! I will definitely be coming back to try other things off of their menu, seems like a classic diner with good homestyle food choices. read more

This popular eatery is the perfect brunch location. There are many options for you to select from but the MUST HAVE is the Cinnamon Bun. Baked to perfection their Cinnamon Bun has the perfect ratio of bread to cinnamon to sweetness. I find many cinnamon buns too sweet and there is no worry of that with these ones as they use a sprinkling of brown sugar on the top and no icing. They are baked fresh daily in house and always go fast so be sure you get here early to get one. The overall feel of the restaurant is casual. Meaning I would not select it for a date - it is more the "meet up with friends" location. The inside is very open so, when it is full, it is noisy as the sound easily travels throughout the restaurant. The staff are very friendly and attentive - refilling water and coffee several times throughout the meal. You also won't feel rushed as they create a comfortable environment to sit chatting with your party for a long time. The Highlevel Diner is on my "regular" list of brunch locations in Edmonton and it will soon be on your list too! read more

I may be a little biased to give a review for this place, but nevertheless, I will. I've been going to this place since before I can remember, and it's a quaint little diner that I recommend to all my friends. If you like organic food, locally grown food, hormone-free meat, and pesticide free veggies, this is the place for you. They're also known for their cinnamon buns, and I suggest you try one. The decor is probably my favorite in the city, every month or so they display a different local artist's work, including stained glass hanging in the partition between tables and everything is very cozy. All of the art is for sale. This place supports local farmers, artists and other businesses. So if you enjoy yourself there, you'll be supporting not only a local restaurant, but all of the above. Wonderful salmon dish with cherry tomatoes and shrimp on top along with a sauce that made my tastebuds come alive and dance! 3.5 - I've been to this restaurant many times over the years. I very much love their Tabouleh Salad, it is one of the best. I appreciate that they make most of their food from scratch, including their ketchup. I appreciate that they openly post information on recent health inspections (they have a had a few violations this year) and pride themselves in cleanliness. Last Friday, at lunch, I headed there with my mom. My stomach had been a little temperamental so we picked a spot I trusted. Everything was off to a good start. We were greeted promptly and with kindness. We were sat down at a nice table near a window. After reviewing the menu we decided to split an order of Middle Eastern Appetizer Platter. When the platter arrived it looked beautiful! Before eating my mother asked the waitress if she could find out when the hummus was made. The waitress seemed put off by our question. Fair enough, I can see how not many people ask this. Although at the same time I must say it is completely reasonable to ask such a question. Especially in a restaurant that prides itself with a healthy environment and healthy food. She came back moments later and mentioned it was made on Wednesday (two days prior). Alright, I shouldn't have a problem digesting this. Overall the platter was good but the chicken wasn't. We both stopped eating it. Celebrating my mom's birthday we were quite excited to try a dessert. The waitress started by telling us the bread pudding was $2 off. Of course we were curious to know when the desserts were made. Again the waitress didn't seem too happy that we asked. I felt as though I had to explain why I was asking. She came back and told us the Bread Pudding was made on Monday (4 days prior). If this is why it is $2 off then customers should be made aware of why it is discounted. The Chocolate Cake, Pecan Caramel Fudge Pie and the Assorted Cheesecake were made on Wednesday (2 days prior) and they did not know when the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie and Wild Blueberry Crisp were made (what we wanted)!! What?!? How can you not know when food is prepared in a kitchen! I found this EXTREMELY disappointing. Needless to say we did not have a dessert. This is a neighbourhood spot for me, so I probably get to eat here more than anyone who has to drive and park (which is had to find in this area). The Highlevel Diner is a foodie's restuarant and I mean that in a good way. They have a solid menu and everyone has a favorite off the menu. Mine is the grilled chicken sandwich - chicken salad, comfort food. The menu is a good choice, but to really appreciate this place, have the special of the day. So, at lunch have the quiche of the day and the daily soup, have the muffin of the day and the daily special for dinner. Dinner specials can be more substantial than the menu items (there is little difference between the lunch and dinner menus). I've had lamb shank and steak as a special, but you won't find these kind of items on the menu. This is also a place that I'm not embarrassed to meet vegitarian friends at. Their vegitarian selections are not "real food lite", but honestly well constructed no meat offerings, so non-meateaters aren't stuck with the veggie burger (uugh) as their only option. While this is a foodie destination, don't expect oblong plates with truffle oil and wine reductions squirted on them or fancy plating with ring molds. They do comfort food really well and with a gourmet twist. It is the Highlevel DINER after all. Expect a diner/cafe vibe: old wooden tables and mis-matched wooden chairs. Well I must say this is one of the best breakfast places in Edmonton! Hooray for breakfast, there really aren't enough of these places. Be warned this place fills up fast and good luck finding parking in the Garneau area. That being said once you make it into the diner and get a table it is well worth it. This diner has a lovely, cut feeling to it that I really just can't pass up. There is every kind of person in this diner and that's what I love about it. Now for the food - oh the Eggs Benedict is simply to die for, I love eggs benny, it's my favourite breakfast meal and it is definitely 5 stars at this place! Every time I've been here the food has not disappointed myself or the person I'm with which is why we always come back! The location is perfect, during the summer you can just waltz across the high level bridge for some breakfast, the fact that it is close to down town makes it the ideal breakfast spot while still being located in the eclectic community of Garneau. I've never met an entree at Highlevel Diner that I didn't like, and during today's visit, that belief was solidified. I had the huevos rancheros, which was equal parts cheesy and delicious. Basically, this is my new favourite breakfast, beating out my longtime love, eggs benedict (if you're reading this Benny, it's not you- it's me). Another tasty treat during today's visit? Their Vietnamese-style iced coffees. They were super tasty and -- get ready for this -- they were served in mason jars! Now I know most of you will roll your eyes and scoff over my delight where mason jars are concerned, but I'm pretty sure they're the cutest drinking apparatus out there... Clearly someone at Highlevel has spent some time on Pinterest, but I digress. Our server today was a delight, as were the other staff on duty. Our food came promptly, our glasses were refilled frequently and we left happy as can be. All in all, this place definitely earned five stars today, hands down. read more

The only place in the city where I eat the ketchup! Although their selection is a bit limited, the food is always tasty and the staff is always polite. You have to judge the time carefully, because the restaurant can get packed in a hurry. I have been here countless times and have always enjoyed my visits. The food is exactly what I remember but the homemade ketchup is always a highlight for me. It make the eggs, the potatoes, even the toast taste better! I usually visit Highlevel when all my other favourite cafes in the area are full, then think to myself, why is this place not my go-to? The food is top notch. (Especially that Skor cheesecake). The servers are really nice and helpful. And the atmosphere is 100% local. Great for both a lunch date (business or personal) or some late night coffee and dessert, I'm definitely going to be spending some more time here. Oh shrimp keish, how I love you. Add the home made ketchup to the fries if you like the taste of actual tomatoes and you have a little plate of happy. The prices reflect the home cooking attitude, but it is not unreasonable. Too bad the parking lot is so damn small. Free parking if you can find it, but do try to carpool if meeting others for lunch. The Highlevel Diner is the place you eat when all of the better places nearby are packed and you just want to eat. The food can be good - I enjoyed my Jambalaya, which tasted like something I'd make at home. And I'm a good cook, so this is a compliment. But this tasty Jambalaya, served with homemade cornbread, was served in an establishment with 40 year old carpets (or at least that's the way they look) and knickknacks of the same vintage. My wife didn't enjoy her veggie burger very much - it was bland. And the service tends to be competent, but not particularly good or friendly. I never particularly feel welcome here for some reason. If I'm paying $17 for something I could make just as well at home, I'd prefer more up to date decor (really, how clean are those carpets) and friendlier service. I've also eaten breakfast here and it was just ok. I was a bit underwhlemed by my "latte in the bowl" and my apple pancake. They have a decent, if grossly overpriced, selection of bottled beer, and only one beer on tap. I feel as if High Level coasts on a reputation that it earned years ago, and hasn't really kept up. read more

Oh Highlevel Diner. You were my first introduction to Edmonton eateries when I started visiting Yeg frequently way back in 2000, and you're still one of my favourites. I don't know if it's your convenient location (right off of the High Level Bridge in Garneau), your homey dining room, or your exceptional service that makes visiting you such a treat. But I do know your star attraction is the food. Whether or not I want something light (like your chicken kebabs platter) or hearty (like the 3 egg Farmer's Omelette) , I know it will be delicious, customized to my request, nicely plated, and leave me feeling full at a decent price. I was introduced to Highlevel Diner by one of my oldest & most reliable friends, and perhaps that's why I see the restaurant in that light too - no matter what I want to eat, or what type of outing I'm having (from quiet date night to boisterous afternoon birthday party or Sunday morning tweet up) Highlevel fits the bill. It's not the fanciest place or the fanciest food, but it's dependable, good, and has a special homey feel that just makes you happy to be there. People always rave about the Highlevel Diner but I just don't understand the hype. I went for lunch on a Saturday, I had to wait for a table, and when I finally got seated, it was a table smooshed up against a wall (walls on two sides of the table). The cream for coffee sits on the table in a cute little china cream dish. I thought it was incredibly charming until I poured it into my coffee and it came out in chunks. Our server didn't smile once. It might have been because we asked what the soup and sandwich of the day were and she had to trek into the kitchen to find because she didn't know. Aside from all of that, the food was good. I enjoyed my lunch and so did my lunch date. The portions are huge - at least mine was. I was only able to eat about half of the food on my plate and I was starving when I sat down to eat. I guess I'm one of those people who wants an experience - not just good food. I was really disappointed because I have always heard amazing things about the Highlevel Diner. I wish I could have experienced it for myself. Love it here every time. The eclectic Decore and the warm atmosphere is amazing. Gives you a good Edmonton vibe just off of White and across the river from downtown. Parking is difficult however it is worth the effort read more

This is definitely a gem in our city. I have never had a bad meal here and I even call for takeout. The staff is fast and friendly and they have some of the best lattes in the city. My fave is the chicken tostada. Bread pudding is a solid choice for a dessert so always make sure to leave room. Love it! read more

I knew from past reviews that I would really like the Highlevel Diner. I just so happened to go on a day when it was Ukranian Thursday! There is a platter for $15 which includes perogies, cabbage rolls, Ukranian sausage and a small cup of borscht. I really enjoyed the entire platter except I wasn't a fan of the cabbage rolls. I like mine to be savory and they made them sweet or you can get them sour, no thanks. Otherwise, YUM. Parking also SUCKS, but that's pretty typical for the cute little places so mute point. The decor was pretty typical of a local diner, very eclectic. The server was really nice and as attentive as she could be with a full section. I'll go again! read more

Ended up at High Level because SugarBowl still wasn't open. Had a great breakfast. I'm never disappointed when I go and this was much the same. I had eggs, bacon and asked for a half cinnamon bun. They couldn't do the half so I shared with a friend but everything was tasty. The service was strong and what more do you need for a diner really? One of my favourite diners in town.
