We were all thumbs up on the coffee, and all of us LOVED the ambiance. It's so fun looking at all the stuff on the walls. I'd love to come back for lunch if I'm back in town again but this visit was for brekkie. I was a bit nervous when the eggs bennie came and the hollandaise was technicolor orange because that is the only thing my friend ever orders for breakfast and is a connoisseur. However, they seemed totally satisfied with them so my fears were unfounded. The food is simple = but good. I don't know what they put in the pancakes but they were MAGICAL. The coffee is so so, the atmosphere something between 50's nostalgia and sweaty truck stop. This is not the upscale or trendy in anyway, or for those who care about gluten or vegan or veggie options. I don't know why but recently I've been having a mad craving for a tuna melt. I know I can make them at home but it's not the same. I always get the Tuna Melt here - it's very good! This is an old Edmontonian diner off 99th. It's got that good community vibe and that's what keeps people coming back. Servers are my favourite!! Maybe I ordered the wrong thing or maybe I came on an off night. The spaghetti here is...kinda gross for lack of a better word. It looks like diarrhea honestly. The pasta was way over cooked until it was mush. I wouldn't recommend this at all. The meatballs also tasted metallic for some reason. The burger was alright- your typical M&M meat shop patty and nothing to complain about the salad. Hummus was a bit runny and the pita was dry. I wish they would put less oil on the hummus. The milkshakes, however, saved the day. I tried the banana flavour and it took me back to my childhood of banana milk but this is an upgraded version of that. Edmonton is home to a handful of classic diners and one of the best is surely Old Strathcona's Route 99. Voted #1 Best Breakfast 2018 in VUE Weekly, you know that they're gonna serve a solid meal without much fuss. They're easy to spot, right on 99th Street, a red building with huge signage. I'm not sure when they originally opened but once you enter the doors you will be transported back to the 50s with their heavy amounts of kitsch and decor. License plates and street signs all over the walls, booths wrapped in weathered red vinyl, album covers literally everywhere, and a real working traffic light. There's a huge vibe at Route 99 and it screams old school diner in a most wonderful way. The servers manage to strike an ideal balance between friendly and surly which suits the atmosphere perfectly. Seated at a sunny booth by the window, I could've spent a lot of time looking around at everything but forced myself to the task at hand and began to flip through the multi-page menu. I was visiting for breakfast, which is likely the most popular meal of the day at Route 99, however they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Do not expect a fancy coffee here! This is the kind of place where a server walks around with a coffee pot offering top-ups. A tea girl myself, I ordered Tea ($2.25) and simply requested whatever black variety they carry (which is almost always Red Rose in these situations). An individual pot of hot water arrived and I placed my tea bag (indeed Red Rose) inside, allowing it to steep. I usually request milk but forgot and used the table creamer instead. A completely straight forward tea experience which was hot and comfortingly familiar. The breakfast menu sticks to the classics. This is a bacon and eggs kind of place. Omelettes are a safe bet as well. They do have an eggs benedict on the menu but this really isn't the time or the place to order a dish like that. I highly recommend keeping things simple. I went for the 2 Eggs with Bacon or Sausage or Ham (Served with toast/hash OR 1 pancake - $9.50). Classic. I requested the bacon and asked for it to be extra crispy. I chose the toast and hash and was offered white, brown or rye bread. I picked rye. I had my eggs cooked over medium. Our plates of food arrived so lightening quick that it seemed impossible. I'm not sure that our server even had the time to tell the kitchen our order... And suddenly we were eating. Everything was cooked to my specifications and was the ultimate in a classic, comfortable, Canadian breakfast. The eggs were just runny enough, the bacon was nice and crispy the way that I like it, the toast was nicely buttered (I spread strawberry jam on it), and the hash was delicious with great crispy parts (I got some ketchup happening on there). Every part of the dish was simple but done well. The rest of the menu is pretty extensive and they serve a full array of burgers, sandwiches, and even liver and onions - which somehow sounds right for this place. I detected a bit of a Greek influence in the menu as well, which is interesting. I want to return for dinner because I've only ever visited for breakfast. I hear that the milkshakes are amazing. If you're looking for one of those classic diner experiences, you won't need to look any further than Route 99. The menu is one of the most diverse I have ever seen with breakfast foods, burgers, sandwiches, pastas, melts, pizzas, dinners, and a few surprises like spinach pie and donairs. Service is efficient, prices are great, and the atmosphere is very cool. The walls are lined with memorabilia from the 50s and 60s, including album covers, pictures of Elvis, and the centrepiece of an airplane wing with Route 99 emblazoned upon it. I finally decided upon a donair burger. I was really in the mood for a donair, but not the mess, and I heard the burgers here are pretty special. I think I will order a regular beef burger next time, because the donair meat here is nothing to write home about. It is thin and pre-sliced, reasonably tasty, but nothing special. The fresh bun had tomatoes, lettuce, and tzatziki sauce (I skipped the onions). Good portion, and it came with a mound of crispy fries. I also had a bowl of the soup of the day, as I am weak when it comes to cream of mushroom soup. I was expecting something in the pre-made variety, but was extremely surprised to enjoy a delicious bowl of homemade soup. It was excellent. My lunch date went for a hot roast beef dinner, with gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetables (which turned out to be corn niblets), and a cup of soup to start with. His meal was huge, the gravy rich, the potatoes hinted with garlic, and his feelings about the soup were the same as mine. Kudos all around. Somehow we still had room left for dessert. He went with apple pie with ice cream, while I went for the rice pudding. We were given the option of having our desserts heated (which we declined). The apple pie tasted homemade and the rice pudding reminded me of the one my mother used to make - full of cinnamon and plump raisins (OK, I don't like raisins, but it was all about nostalgia for me). I always chuckle when I see the bad and indifferent reviews of Route 99, because I think I see some of these folks in the place from time to time. I come here a lot. I come because I like the people and I like the simple menu and the unpretentious vibe. I like the burgers, I like the breakfasts, I like the clientele, and I like the old movies that play quietly on the TVs up in the corners. I like that the decor has not changed in 30 years and that the booths are worn and slightly worse for wear. I have been coming here since the place opened, and it feels like home to me. Sometimes home feels a little rough around the edges... I know lots of people feel the same way as I do. Try to get in here for breakfast on a weekend. The servings are big and wonderfully greasy, and a sure cure for your Sunday morning hangover. Not the best Benny in town, but it keeps folks coming back. I am partial to their omelettes and I like the sausages. Evenings I am a fan of the burgers. My favourites are the Greek Burger, with Feta and Black Olives. I like to get a Greek Salad on the side for a couple of bucks extra. The Deluxe Burger Is mushrooms, bacon, cheese with a fried egg on top, because a fried egg on a burger is a thing of beauty. The fries are good here as well and come in decent portions. I was here recently and indulged in another favourite, the Chicken Souvlaki Dinner, which is wonderful. Juicy grilled chicken served on rice with Greek salad and house made Tzatziki dressing. There is a small greek section on the menu,and everything on it is authentic and delicious. They also do pizza, but in all my years coming here, I have never tried it. I must do that sometime... Up by the front counter, there is a dessert display, and there is always fresh pie, and I will often indulge if I still have room. Nothing finishes a diner meal than a slice of hot apple pie with a scoop of ice cream. This is a fun place, with a funky ambience and an interesting decor. They try very hard for the retro diner look... perhaps a little too hard... but you forgive that because they are nice folks. Some days the service is a bit spotty, but you forgive that too, because other days, it is spot on. Most of the staff here have been here a long time, and having been a regular I get may get better service, and I may just know when they are being run ragged, and cut them some slack. I'd say this is a good place for that old time classic diner feeling. A jukebox (didn't check the songs), outdoor seating including gazebo seating, and old time classic diner grub. Decor and booths were on point. As I sat down in my booth, I realized I satuday in the wrong one as it happened so that I had to choose the one booth with the loose flappy backside/headrest. Initially I preplanned what I was going to get which was a strawberry milkshake, which came in under 10 minuites. Before I go through with how the shake was, tip of advice would be to let your shake melt a bit as it'll still be too thick for the straw, just like a frosty from Wendy's. It comes in a classic metal milkshake cup just like at Johnny Rocket's. The shake tasted natural and old fashioned as it should be. Naturally sweet but not too sweet. I then asked the waitress about the rice pudding that was in the fridge display. The moment I asked if it was good, she shot up out of the sky out of nowhere with an instant "yes" like as if a teacher asked you a question knowing full well that you were asleep in class and woke you up on purpose. To me, it was a conditioned/forced response without the effort of honesty. Like yes was sufficient enough and that she couldn't give her honest opinion. So I ordered it, and found it a tad bit too sweet and found raisins to be inside to which I wasn't expecting. I could tell shredded coconut would be good with it. It felt like it was the type of food favoured by old seniors who lost all their teeth and have too many health problems to list or food thrown up by drunk partiers as post-partying food. Will I come back to try the burgers, breakfast, shakes, and pies? Yes. Rice pudding? Nahh. I'd give Route 99 a 7/10. We took my grandpa here thinking the simple home cooked meals would be a nice late dinner. I ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich with fries; my husband, the hot beef sandwich with fries & salad; and my grandpa, the seniors veal cutlet with mash and gravy & corn. The restaurant is on 99 street & 89 avenue, not near much. There is ample parking for the amount of guests it can hold. We saw a little patio near the entrance, although no one was sitting out there and there weren't any extra lights so we weren't sure that it was open. Upon entering the restaurant, you see the food counter which I guess could be reminiscent on an old diner where you see the food come up just behind the counter sitting area. However it was just plain steel and in my opinion kind of an eye sore. The restaurant boasts old school red booths and nastolgic posters of old time products like red rose tea, and lots of Marilyn/James Dean/Elvis art. The floors really bothered me as they totally ruined the setting and theme I assume the owners would have been going for. The floors were an ugly old brown, dusty dark red, and dark green tile like you would expect to see in the subway or LRT. There were lots of windows which was nice. The servers were friendly and approached us for our drink order as soon as we chose our seats. The menu has a lot of options including pizza, cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, hot dinners, and breakfast. My Philly cheese steak came out hot and ready to eat. The friend green peppers and onions were nice, but lacked flavour like the dull meat the accompanied it. The bun was soft. My fries were no more than deep fried freezer fries that I literally could not get enough salt on to enjoy. Bland. My meal was an average portion size. My husband said his hot roast beef sandwich was lacking taste as well, including the gravy it came with. He chose the starter salad that it came with which I ate and was very disappointed in. The salad was cut up ice beef lettuce with grated carrots and salad dressing on it. His meal was an average portion size. My grandpa loved his veal cutlet dinner and said that it was the perfect portion size for him, having chosen off the seniors menu. His potatoes were home made and looked delicious. My dad and I had a late lunch at Route 99 today and i'm bumping my rating up one star because of it. Departing from my creature-of-habit ways, I ordered a veggie burger with side salad, while my dad opted for a small beef and onion pizza. While we waited for food, we looked around at all the pop culture memorabilia and talked about the records we had or liked. He commented, "Every time I look up, I notice something different." The veggie burger gets high marks, especially because of the accompanying condiment tray, allowing one to put as much or as little ketchup, mustard and relish on their burger as they please. My dad's pizza also aced the test, and unfortunately we were both too full to imbibe in a slice of strawberry-rhubarb pie. Probably the best Route 99 experience I've had to date. read more

It was such a disappointment coming to this place. The service was unfriendly; I don't know if she is the manager or the owner but she was very unfriendly, not smiling and not making me feel welcome. The prices are very expensive for the quality of the dishes which taste like coming out from the freezer and then heated in the microwave. I ordered a sandwich that to my surprise would cost me more if I wanted fries or salad. The size of the sandwich was small (I took a picture with fork and knife next the sandwich to show). My sandwich would have tasted much much better if instead I had gone to the store to buy bread, put mustard and adding meat. It would have been much cheaper as well. Route 99 diner is a throwback to simpler times. Unless it's changed recently the closest thing you'll get to vegetarian is a grilled cheese sandwich. For good, hot, simple faire, at very reasonable prices, they can't be beat. The waitresses are the same as 20 years ago- just older and their daughters and granddaughters (probably) are now working there. They have breakfast all day, and the cheapest breakfast around on weekday mornings. New (ish) to their menu is the addition of donair meat-which can be substituted for bacon,ham or sausage for breakfast- a great addition, in my opinion. (The coffee is your typical truck stop coffee-so I'd suggest tea for now and get a dent coffee later) It's not fancy, but for a burst of 70s,80s and 90s nostalgia, at a reasonable price, they can't be beat. Unfortunately it was not the case, there was a woman breast feeding while handling food as well as the dishes we received were not even close to standard. The farmers breakfast had mould on one egg while the other was not even cooked fully. You could see raw residue in the egg whites. The milkshake was more like a chocolate milk with whipping cream to make it thick. Route 99 Diner is the kind of place I imagine hanging out with a regular group of friends on a Sunday morning after a night at the bar. The atmosphere is like any other diner. There are big padded booths and the walls are littered with old photos and albums and newspapers. What's different here is that they have an actual plane wing hanging from the roof, which is pretty cool. Some things that detracts from the diner vibe for me were the radio and TV's playing regular programming and the waitresses were dressed in regular clothes. The food here was pretty good, but it's hard to mess up chicken fingers and fries. M had the eggs Benny (they serve all day breakfast) and he seemed to enjoy them. I've been here in the past as well and seemed to remember enjoying the breakfasts I have had here, too. The customer service wasn't the best, so that's why I can only give them 3 stars. You're only as good as the people who you choose to be the face of your business, and if they're grumpy and unfriendly, that doesn't look good on you. I've been here probably 10 times and I absolutely love it. Most of the time I come with my boyfriend during breakfast and order the 3 egg omelet. Great, simple flavors and the portions are perfect. We love to come here for breakfast because of the nice atmosphere, nice staff and great food. The food itself is nothing that is particularly different or unique, but it's done very well and that's why it's so good. Some staff do seem more distant and cold, however most of the time we get the same few ladies who are just wonderful. The only 'bad' experience I've had with the staff is when the restaurant is unbelievably busy and something is going wrong with an order or whatever - which is understandable. Most of the time the staff are very kind and attentive. Coffee is coffee, it's average and there's nothing more I can say there. Their milkshakes are to die for and once again, nothing incredibly special just very well done. Their burgers are on the same page - very good very basic but would absolutely come back for another. I found the food to be cheap! Which is awesome. Breakfast is 10-12 dollars roughly which to be honest is pretty great. I've seen a lot of complaints about price but honestly when I first came here I was blown away by how cheap it was for such great food. This place reminds me of my hometown diner, so naturally I have to love it. From the picture frames that cover every inch of the wall, the vinyl booths, to the jukebox. Yeah, it's that kind of establishment, where you spent all night out and woke up to miss Breakfast at some other diner...which is stupid, because you should have just come here in the first place. The milkshakes here are awesome (and also huge - consider sharing...but don't actually). There are burgers chicken-fingers, soup of the days, and potatoes galore (hashbrowns or fries). I'm not a hashbrown fan, but french fries are my homies. Did I mention all day breakfast? French Toast, Eggs Bennie, and Pancakes. Also, meals usually range from $10-$15 a person, and usually there are leftovers. AND if you're still hungry after all of that food, there's pies and other desserts in the display case. *The only thing that really bothers me about this place is if you asked for poutined fries, they'll put (lets pretend you ordered) a grill cheese on the plate all lonely-like, and then on a SEPERATE plate a huge stack of heavenly poutine. Why not just conserve valuable table space, dishes anddd trips from the kitchen and put it alll on the SAME PLATE!? Since YELP would not let me give this location anything less than 1 star i rate this establishment 0/5. Route 99, a family which claims it is a family-friendly Diner and yet not so friendly I find it completely deplorable and the aspect of what someone with health or food restrictions can and cannot eat. During my recent visit to Route 99 Diner in Edmonton Alberta substitutions were not allowed the food was below par was not properly cooked and the service was not up to par as one would expect from a place like this the amount of food you get for the crisis is extremely expensive and aside from what they give you a lot of the meat looks burnt and unpalatable. The place is not too friendly when it comes to people with disabilities as they tended to shun those with disabilities given priority over customers of certain looks I am disgusted to be in such a place were the service is not up to respectable Park as other diners would go. In regards to dietary restrictions Route 99 does not accommodate they do not care if you are gluten free celiac or have allergies. I stopped in to have breakfast with my brother and his fiance and even after discussion I wanted to order some of their breakfast items but they were not able to provide accommodations to substitutions their pancakes were very small and not worth the price that they are selling it at. I hereby do not recommend eating or dining at this establishment although my review is subjective with my personal experience being a bad one others may have different experiences but after the experience that I have had and I am a person of disability with dietary restrictions I will NEVER come at this establishment again!!!!!!!!! read more

Route 99 is a diner - nothing more. Service is fast, but not terribly attentive or comfortable - our server seemed annoyed that we didn't have our drink order ready before we even sat down at our table. And then we waited an eternity to receive our bill - I just went up to the till to pay. I ordered the steak and eggs, which tasted as a diner's steak and eggs should. I ordered my eggs poached, and it was clear that they were cooked in molds, probably in a microwave oven. They still tasted good. I ordered a pancake on the side instead of the toast and hashbrowns, which is a good option. And the pancake was pretty good - it's a typical, thick diner pancake, served with "pancake syrup." But my wife ordered Eggs Benedict, substituting the ham for tomatoes. The tomatoes were not grilled before they were placed on the english muffin, which was not toasted. The Hollandaise Sauce came from a package and was "beyond disgusting," according to my wife. She first wanted to order an Omelette instead of the Eggs Benedict, but as she finds processed cheese disgusting, she opted for the Benedict. And the Route 99 diner does not even provide an option to order non-processed cheese. Why can't you just order real cheese for your omelette at an additional cost? Just because the decor pays homage to the 1950s doesn't mean that the food needs to as well. The prices here are fairly reasonable, probably because their ingredients tend to the cheaper side. Route 99 is one of those long-standing Edmonton food places. It has been around for as long as I remember and have been in Edmonton. I don't go there a lot but when I have an interest in diner food or 50's nostalgia this is the first place that comes to mind. It totally has the 50's diner theme down pat. Prices are reasonable and the staff quick at their jobs and pleasant to the customers. There is a ton of memorabilia to look at all over the walls. The food is what you would expect from a greasy spoon diner. Nothing great, but nothing that I have found terrible either. Pretty much average diner food. I haven't tried everything on the menu though so maybe I am missing some of their hits and misses! I did just see a photo of their 5 dollar milkshake in one review so I think I may have to come back on a hot sunny day! read more

Route 99 is a gem in the world of greasy spoons. There is nothing pretentious or snobby about this place; food is served up hot and fast, and the coffee flows freely. There may be some who think that Route 99'lack of presentation is a turn-off, but it just adds to the nostalgia of a mom and pop run restaurant. The food is delicious, consistent, and inexpensive. Where else can you eat a full breakfast with non-stop coffee for under $10.00? The staff are long-time severs here, and while they may seem abrasive at first, if you show them politeness, you get exceptional service and know you'll be treated like gold the next time you come back. read more
