I was told the most notable thing on the menu is their sausage ( They have unique ones like a chicken and blueberry sausage) I had the savory belgian waffle that had on it two poached eggs with homemade hollandaise sauce and potatoes and a side of their chicken sausage. sure enough, the sausage was my favorite part! Keep in mind the waffle is not sweet whatsoever. My friend had the huevos under the wheel: 2 eggs, black beans, pico, feta, avocado on a crepe. BUT they were out of avocados which was disappointing! The food though pricy, never disappoints. Our server was competent and not overly obtrusive. I ordered the buckwheat pancake with refried beans, salad and avocado with two eggs. It was a meal that filled me up and I was hungry before ordering. Something that continued to surprise me as I was eating the dish was that the refried beans had a bit of cinnamon in them. Not bad or unpleasant, really, just surprising. My spouse ordered the hamburger and said it was good, though the fries were cold and the burger was messy to eat. I'm updating my review from a couple of years ago. Under The High Wheel is still a very popular café, at least for brunch when I was there, with three other guests. We parked on 102 Street and were lucky to find one of the free 2 hour parking spots. Our timing was perfect because we were seated immediately and must have got the last table for four. Everything that I liked about Under The High Wheel the first time I dined here still applies. I did prefer when they had the hanging covid dividers; not because I was worried about covid but because they provided more privacy. As with most Whyte Ave cafés, it's not a large space so tables are quite close to each other. This time I ordered the Bangers and Mash for $21.00 in 2022. The gravy is superb as are the mashed potatoes and sausages. The one problem with this dish is that the eggs are surrounded by gravy so you really don't taste them. My other guests had a variety of dishes and everyone was satisfied. I don't think that I would order the Bangers and Mash again but I'll definitely be back. This remains one of the better places in Edmonton for brunch. read more

I came here to have brunch with a few friends on Saturday around 10:50am. Service was friendly and we were seated fairly quickly. I haven't been back here for a couple of years but I'm happy that the food still tastes delicious. I ordered the $21 Bangers and Mash dish which included free-range organic chicken honey sausages, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, two sunny eggs, beef reduction, and caramelized onion. The beef reduction sauce is the best part of this dish since it's a perfect complement to the other ingredients. You will not be disappointed with this dish. My friends ordered the chicken & waffles, smoked salmon & waffles and the chocolate hazelnut crepe. The two friends who ordered the waffles said their meal was great. However my friend who ordered the crepe said the portion was too small and she was still hungry after. Overall it's a decent place to have brunch in Edmonton but it is a bit pricey compared to other places. It wasn't super hot and the waffle was bland. My cuisinart and a quick trip next door to blush lane would have served me better. . The place is nice and intimate, but I didn't particularly enjoy the food and it felt like we were being shooed out after only 45 minutes of being there. . The quality was fresh, but the portion and flavors weren't there for me. . Presentation is nice though. . Overall don't foresee myself coming back and surprised so many recommend it. read more

I've gone here 3 times and every single time ot never disappoints. The food is abaolutely amazing and super filling! The servers are very friemdly and kind too! I recommend asking for the soup of the day, we ordered it not knowing what it was and it was a lovely surprise to try a zucchini and dill soup that was absolutely scrumptious! Why have I never eaten here before! This was a buzzing Sunday brunch scene lively with amazing looking food coming out of the kitchen. Our waitress was polite and quick to take our orders. We didn't have to wait too long even though the restaurant was clearly very busy. I ordered the savory Belgian waffle which had two poached eggs Hollandaise sauce bacon and amazing crispy potatoes. I would highly recommend this one if you love savory and also waffles! This is definitely a great brunch spot to go with a small group of people or on a date! Honestly the food was 10 out of 10. I went with a small group of people and we all had an excellent experience. The decor was trendy and they had a variety of brunch items on the menu as well as great lunch choices. I wanna preface this by saying there wasn't anything inherently wrong with Under the High Wheel but I guess I feel like it got a lot of hype for a average breakfast. Under the High Wheel is located just off of whyte Ave and is attached or off of Blush Lane Organics. It's a cozy little hipster restaurant that has a simple and tasty looking menu. I had Huevos and my partner had a salad. While my huevos was tasty, it came on a buck wheat crepe opposed to a standard tortilla shell, there wasn't really anything spectacular about it. All the components were kind of just separated and on the crepe. The salad looked tasty but again, a fairly generic salad with berries and all the veggies. Our server was lovely and pleasant and the atmosphere was cute but I guess I just wasn't super impressed considering how much I had heard about Under the High Wheel. I would recommend giving it a try and making your own decision. My partner and I just kind agreed that it had that trendy organic hipster vibe and I guess that's just not our thing but maybe it's yours so who knows. read more

First positive things : the food was good! We got the sweet waffle and the avocado toast. If this review was just on food I would give it 5/5! However I am only giving it 3/5 because of the extremelyyyyyyy slow service - took an hour from when we ordered to getting our food. Which is fine, okay sometimes the food takes a long time. BUT when we asked our waitress about our food, she essentially said something to the effect of we will get our food when we get our food. .... okay? THEN when we got our bill we realized that there is a mandatory 18% gratuity for parties of 5 or greater, and we were a party of 5. .... wow Anyways to summarize, good food, but slow, poor service and mandatory gratuity. I made a return visit on July 9th, this time with the delightful KKB. The quibbles I expressed in my previous review are no longer quibbles. I'm very happy to report that I was asked how I'd like my eggs poached. I asked for soft poached, and that's exactly what I got. The waffle was perfect, not burned around the edges as it was on my last visit. The diced potatoes were perfectly seasoned, the orange juice was exceptional... and again ... those chicken sausages!!!! If you've never been to Under The High Wheel, it's located in the same building as Da Capo and Blush Lane Organic Market. There's a patio on the west side of the entrance, an enticing spot to people-watch the morning away while basking in a few rays. A friend and I met up for brunch Saturday morning. Under the High Wheel was obviously busy but we got lucky and didn't have to wait too long to snag a table. Unfortunately for us, the waitress informed us that the kitchen was understaffed, meaning a longer wait time for our meal and only having the first page of the menu (breakfast options) to choose from. The atmosphere is relaxed and has a bit of a bohemian vibe to it. I liked the decor, with one wall of exposed brick (very Montreal'esque) and a mini bicycle hanging along one of the poles. Service was friendly but a bit spotty. - Traditional Breakfast ($14.00) - two fried free-range eggs, fried tomato (subbed instead of cranberry maple sausage/bacon), herb roasted potatoes and toast. Choose your style of eggs, my friend requested scrambled. A bit weird that they only offer fried tomato or spinach as a substitute for the meat. And that you could only pick one. No turkey sausage? Really? She still enjoyed her meal but some meat protein would have been ideal. - Savoury belgian waffle ($18.00) - choice of smoked salmon or bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise. The choice was easy, smoked salmon. The result = deliciousness. The waffle was fluffy with a crispy bite. The egg was cooked perfectly and the yolk oozed out after being poked. The combo of thinly sliced smoked salmon and hollandaise, well, I'm beginning to see why people love brunch so much. Tantalizing flavours of sweet and savoury. Cute spot to grab brunch or dinner but more so on the pricey side. Be prepared to wait for your food but everything is made from scratch, so you know you're getting quality. I had breakfast and lunch here many times. It's connected to De Capo so there's decent breakfast servings and good coffee options. Personally I think if you're hoping to get local food, you have to be understanding that it might not be at a price point of quick food or chain restaurants. The traditional breakfast is a large meal and well priced. Honestly the best value for your money if you're just looking to get full with the basics. They also in the past have some great treats to buy if you wanted to grab something to munch on while exploring the avenue. The most recent visit I decided on the waffle with poached egg and salmon. It's like an oversized bennie with salad and fruit on the side. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll know I love my bennies. This doesn't disappoint and there was a perfect amount of hollandaise sauce. I really must mention that I also enjoy the selection of De Capo coffees, as do my more regular coffee drinking friends. Sometimes we start with coffee and have come back later for a meal. What a wonderful thing for two good business to be connected like that. I really enjoy this location for the proximity to the Strathcona Farmers' market and for a quick brunch with coworkers. There's ample street parking (metered on Whyte but free 2 hour on the side streets) and I love sitting on the little patio in summer (I stress little so don't be too disappointed if there's no spots open during lunch). The only reason I'd give it 4 stars is that the noise level inside does tend to go up substantially when there's a half to a full restaurant. To a point where I actually acknowledged I can't take some of my friends here due to their hearing. So if you hope to have a good long conversation, go during an off time. read more

I came here with my Mom and Sister for breakfast. We each had the Sweet Belgium Waffle plate because we couldn't resist it! It was deliciouso! It comes with a lot of fresh fruit and you don't even really need syrup because its so good without. It does come with chocolate sauce which is very thick and probably kind of bad for you. The food comes out relatively fast as well which is good. I like that they have Remedy Chai Latte's here I think that is a nice touch and I really love it when local people team together in the restaurant industry. Coffee is from Da Capo and is honestly to die for. The service here was very meh. It took forever for us to order and for us to even get a water refill. Our waitress wasn't that friendly but it is OK. It was a busy morning so I won't hold it against them. I would definitely come back here I think it is a cute place for breakfast. Brunch is always a special time, fun with just the hunnybunny, a chance for growing closer with the whole family (which we did on this visit). We arrived during a busy seating without reservations; a table was found for us and we were seated quickly in the middle of a full restaurant. The hustle and bustle was immediately engaging, the noises of the kitchen and the hum of conversation setting the perfect vibe for an unhurried meal. One of our party doesn't eat gluten, and she was pleased with her options. Dad and I got a very filling full traditional breakfast (two fried free-range eggs, cranberry maple sausage or bacon, herb roasted potatoes and toast), the bunny got the sweet Belgian waffle (chantilly cream, seasonal fruit & berries). We left full, satisfied, and with a solid option for our next family brunch. The staff were more than on-the-ball: they knew their offerings (something I think is more and more special these days), could describe them in enticing ways, and were bright-eyed and eager to ensure that all the members of our party knew what to order, what add-ons to bring, and kept the tasty coffee flowing. It's such a pleasant place to sit and enjoy a meal or tea or coffee with your significant other. I always order the traditional breakfast and I always get my eggs poached. I'm a sucker for poached eggs. I'd do anything for poached eggs. The eggs are always prepared perfectly and they taste great. The quality of the food here is just absolutely superb. Whether you get bacon or sausage, it's savory and mouth watering, as well as seasoned perfectly. The bread and toast tastes incredibly fresh and everything on the menu is just to die for. The food here is honestly something else. It's quite pricey but all of the ingredients are local and organic and fresh to death. So, totally worth the price you pay. The service here since I've returned has also been decent. Waitresses and servers have been kind and polite but also leave you alone to enjoy your meal which I appreciate. I've found the best time to come is around 10 or 11 on a weekday. Apparently people have caught on to how great this place is so if you come on a weekend, you'll have to wait. Very underwhelming service. We were told there would be a 45 minute wait so we put down our name and number and went off to walk around. We came back just 5 minutes after receiving a call from them and were told our table was gone. Waited another 20 minutes and were finally sat outside. This is an adorable little spot to grab lunch! It is sunny and bright with cute decor. The menu is good, all the ingredients are very fresh! There is an organic market place right next to them and I have a feeling that a lot of the produce comes from there. Why only 3stars? I find that some of the items on the menu are just OK, not amazing. Some try really hard to be different, use a lot of healthy or interesting ingrdients, but then just don't taste that good. Others I quite like, such as the croque monsieur which is a radical take from a traditional croque; pork loin and apples. It's good, but it is absolutely way too large, I literally could not finish half of it (thank goodness for toaster-ovens!) They also need to step up their game with the beverage menu: 1 white and 1 red wine is not going to cut it! However, I do love the location and I also really love the cool, relaxed, laid-back-but-still-classy environment. I should also mention they do have a killer dessert selection and bake all of the treats in house I believe. So, I will keep coming to eat Under The High Wheel and hopefully soon as this place finds a foothold on East Whyte, they will continue to refine the menu and climb up the star ladder! read more

I went here after a spa session to really get the most out if my free time. It was Canada Day and Whyte Avenue was bustling. I really enjoy the building's businesses. It shares space with an organic grocery store and yoga studio. It's a bright and earthy atmosphere, with accents of copper and rusty metals and barn lights. The menu is cream coloured pages on clipboards. They have Vegan and Vegetarian options. The wait staff was busy, efficient and kind. Water came in a glass bottle with a mason jar. I ordered a black coffee and the lentil burger with soup. I really enjoyed the ambiance while I reflected on life. The air conditioning was cool and comfortable. The dish came with a side of cubed potato pan fried, vegetable soup and side of apple, orange and blackberry. The lentil burger was soft with bits of cashew for a chunky texture. It's flavour was earthy, savoury and hearty. It was mild and with very little salt. It was placed on a poppy seed bun with butter leaf lettuce, tomato, pickle and red onion. I relished it. The soup was a clear broth, squash and sprout soup with salt and rosemary spice. The potatoes were a bit oily for my health but tasted amazing. The fruit was a perfect way to end the meal. This was a great place to relax, reflect, rely on good staff and wholesome food at a reasonable price. read more

Seeing this new spot open on the weekend, we had to stop in on Sunday for some breakfast. Also, I should note, I have been waiting and waiting for the Roots on Whyte building to start coming to life. It looks the "Wheel" is going to be a good place for sandwiches, snacks, coffee (certainly until the new Da Capo opens in the same building), and lingering. (Laptop note: lots of open outlets spotted around the room.) My wife had a generous apple crisp crepe, with granola providing the crunch inside the powdered sugar covered crepe. I went for the Croquet Monsieur, which tossed an egg on top of the ham and cheese sandwich. A nice bechamel added some flavour to the gruyere and ham mix. The bread was big and thick. My only complaint, really, is that the bread was so big that there could have been a little more in the sandwich, the ham got a bit lost. I was here for brunch on Christmas Eve with my lunch date and It was not my first choice to go as I had bad experience about a year ago with this place. I decided to give it another try and I am sure glad I did. I actually really enjoyed the flavorful sausage (I asked for it butterflied). My date had their special of the day which was a pulled pork breakfast and he loved it.
